Karen Brearey

APRIL 9, 1949 -- SEPT. 16, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Karen M. Brearey, 55, of Inverness Lane, a retired registered nurse, died Thursday at home.

A native of Allentown, Pa., Mrs. Brearey moved here in 2001 from Pennsylvania. She was a member of First Congregational Church of Orange City and enjoyed crafts and her garden.

Survivors include a daughter, April Mae, New Milford, Pa.; two sisters, Barbara Queen, Ocala, and Nancy Coleman, Huntsville, Ohio. Lankford, Orange City, is in charge.

Eusebio Castro

JAN. 5, 1905 -- SEPT. 19, 2004

DELAND -- Eusebio Castro, 99, of Manor Way, who retired after 15 years of service as maintenance supervisor at Coney Island in New York, died Sunday at home.

Mr. Castro, a native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, moved here in 1998 from Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 75 years, Estebania; three sons, Carmelo, Brooklyn, Tito, Miami, and Raymond, Caguas; four daughters, Carman Castro, DeLand, Tomasa Castro, Caguas, Aida Cancel, Penuelas, Puerto Rico, and Olga Castro, Orlando; a brother, Valentino, and four sisters, Catalina, Canda, Theresa and Vasilia Castro, all of Caguas; 50 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Hubert Davis

JULY 4, 1928 -- SEPT. 20, 2004

ORANGE CITY -- Hubert A. Davis, 76, of East Pineapple Avenue, a retired newspaper typesetter, died Monday at DeBary Manor, DeBary.

Mr. Davis, an Army veteran of the Korean War, moved here in 1988 from his native Dayton, Ohio. He enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include his wife of 6 years, Sondra; four daughters, Patricia Clark, Mohammed, Ill., Jody Davis, Troy, Ohio, Melanie Hogan, Lexington, Ky., and Lori Clem, Orange, Calif.; two stepsons, Dennis Myers, DeLand, and Joe Myers, Orange City; and nine grandchildren. Alavon Direct Cremation, South Daytona, is in charge.

Francis Dunn

MAY 27, 1947 -- SEPT. 15, 2004

TALLAHASSEE -- Francis Dunn, 57, of Tallahassee, a Palm Coast resident from 1971 to 1991, died Wednesday at a nursing home in Tallahassee.

A native of Bowdle, S.D., Mr. Dunn was a former real estate agent and bartender. He moved to Palm Coast from Pennsylvania where he graduated from Slippery Rock University with a degree in physical education. Mr. Dunn also was a former recreation director of Flagler Beach and member of Temple Beth Shalom, Palm Coast.

Survivors include his father, Jack Dunn, Palm Coast; two brothers, Richard, Palm Coast, and Robert, Muscle Shoals, Ala.; and a sister, Lora Burns, Palm Coast. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Gift of Remembrance Headquarters, 1101 N. Lake Destiny Road, Suite 415, Maitland, FL 32751-7105. Craig-Flagler Palms, Flagler Beach, is in charge.

Gladys Evans

MAY 22, 1905 -- SEPT. 12, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Gladys Davis Evans, 99, of Rio Del Indio Drive, a former teacher and Real Estate agent, died Sept. 12 at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mrs. Evans was born in Camillus, N.Y., and came to this area in 1992 from New York. She was a member of Edgewater Methodist Church, Salt Lake Chapter of Order of Eastern Star and New Smyrna Beach Lodge Women of the Moose Chapter 1515.

Survivors include a son, Neil Kimberly, Edgewater; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Good Samaritan Center, 325 Segrave St., Daytona Beach, FL 32118. All Faiths Cremation, Lady Lake, is in charge.

Eva Gibson

JAN. 26, 1921 -- SEPT. 19, 2004

EDGEWATER -- Eva B. Gibson, 83, of Valencia Drive, a restaurant owner and operator, died Sunday at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona Beach.

Mrs. Gibson was born in Soperton, Ga., and moved to Edgewater in 1985 from DeBary. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Edgewater and enjoyed fishing and cooking.

Survivors include a son, Malcolm, Dakota Dunes, S.D.; a daughter, Cynthia Gibson, Edgewater; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Baldwin Brothers, New Smyrna Beach, is in charge.

Marion Gray

NOV. 11, 1944 -- SEPT. 18, 2004

DEBARY -- Marion Irene Gray, 59, of Park Lane, a presser at a dry cleaning facility, died Saturday at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, Orange City.

Ms. Gray moved to this area in 1996 from her native Syracuse, N.Y. She enjoyed knitting, computers, bingo, golf and playing cards.

Survivors include two brothers, John and William Green, both of Syracuse; three sisters, Kathleen Green and Blanche Fisher, both of DeBary, and Patricia Jones, Syracuse. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1620 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Suite 300, Daytona Beach, FL 32119. FourTowns Cremation, Orange City, is in charge.

Gail Grogan

FEB. 12, 1945 -- SEPT. 17, 2004

DELAND -- Gail Ashe Grogan, 59, of Monroe Street, a resident since 1995, died Friday at home.

Mrs. Grogan, a homemaker, moved to this area from Atlanta, her birthplace.

Survivors include a son, Michael, DeLand; a brother, Harold Ashe Jr., Clemson, S.C.; and two grandchildren. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Roberta Herman

JULY 1, 1921 -- SEPT. 5, 2004

PALM COAST -- Roberta Jean Herman, 83, of Shady Lane, who retired in 1980 as a public relations employee for the Army, died Sept. 5 at home.

Mrs. Herman was born in Topeka, Kan., and moved to this area in 1980 from Falls Church, Va. She was a member of Hammock First Baptist Church and the Hammock Women's Association.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce Johne, Palm Coast, and Arthur Johne, Charlottesville, Va.; a sister, Catherine "Kay" Whipple, Newport Beach, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Hammock First Baptist Church, 5328 N. Oceanshore Blvd., Palm Coast, FL 32137. Craig-Flagler Palms, Flagler Beach, is in charge.

Marshall Lewis

JAN. 1, 1986 -- SEPT. 19, 2004

DELAND -- Marshall Tyler Lewis, 18, of West Park Road, who worked with his father at Marshall Lewis Concrete Services, died Sunday of a short known illness, Leukemia, at Central Florida Regional Hospital, Sanford.

Mr. Lewis, a DeLand native, was a lifetime resident of this area. He was a magna cum laude 2004 graduate of DeLand High School and was attending Daytona Beach Community College.

Survivors include his parents, Marshall and Gretchen, a brother, Mitchell, and his paternal grandmother, Alice Bennett, all of DeLand; his maternal grandfather and step-grandmother, Louis and Melissa Meyers, Pine Island; and his maternal grandmother, Sue Myers, DeLand. Memorial donations my be made to the Central Florida Chapter of Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 3319 Maguire Blvd., Suite 110, Orlando, FL 32803. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.

Hiram Najarian

SEPT. 18, 1923 -- SEPT. 18, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Hiram C. Najarian, 81, of Mason Avenue, a construction laborer, died Saturday at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial.

Born in Boone Terre, Mo., Mr. Najarian moved here in 1999 from Jacksonville. He enjoyed sports, music, reading and shopping.

No known immediate relatives survive. Memorial donations may be made to Emory L. Bennett Memorial Veterans Nursing Home, 1920 Mason Ave., Daytona Beach, FL 32117. Pinello, Daytona Beach, is in charge.

Latoyia Solomon

JUNE 1, 1973 -- SEPT. 6, 2004

DELAND -- Latoyia Michelle Solomon, 31, of West Lisbon Parkway, an editorial clerk who worked in the DeLand Bureau of The Daytona Beach News-Journal from 1990 to 1998, died after a short illness on Sept. 6 at Florida Hospital DeLand.

A DeLand native, Ms. Solomon graduated from DeLand High School and Daytona Beach Community College. She also worked as a computer technician before moving back to this area from Atlanta in 2003. She was a member of St. Paul Community Baptist Church and served as a former youth director for Macedonia Baptist Church, Atlanta.

Survivors include two daughters, Cierra Weaver and Jaide Ingram, her father and stepmother, Sammie and Ruby Solomon, her mother, Dorothy Solomon, and two brothers, Darrell and Marco, all of DeLand. Mack is in charge.

Arthur Walker

AUG. 21, 1963 -- SEPT. 19, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH -- Arthur Gene Walker, 41, of South Beach Street, a resident since 1963, died Sunday at home.

Mr. Walker was born in Tallahassee and attended Seabreeze High School. He enjoyed playing and watching basketball.

Survivors include a son, Antonio, and his mother, Arnata Walker, both of Daytona Beach; two brothers, Solomon Roberts, Daytona Beach, and Charles Walker, Thomasville, Ga.; and three sisters, Helen Lee, Daytona Beach, Anita Toombs, Ocala, and Boneta Emmons, Orlando. Gainous is in charge.
