Susan L. Mitchell

Susan L. (Mrs. Marty) Mitchell, 43, of 1210 Fairmeadows Road, died Tuesday afternoon, September 6th, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center Emergency Room. Her death was attributed to a blood clot going to the heart resulting from cancer treatments. The family expresses their deep gratitude to the MMSC Emergency department for their compassionate and professional help as well as the community for their overwhelming outpouring of love and support during this time.

Funeral services and a celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, September10th, at the Center Street Baptist Church with Pastor Bobby Shomo officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from 6-8:00 P.M. on Friday with her family present at that time. Born on April 16th, 1962, in Marshalltown, she was the eldest daughter of Carroll D. and Dorothy (Heintz) Fisher. She graduated from the Garwin High Schools Class of 1980. While in high school, she was employed at the Red Lantern Restaurant in Garwin and later worked with her parents at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, did child care in her home and returned to Rose Hill to become manager after her parents retirement in 1996. In May 2001, she was recipient of the SCI Cemetery Manager of the year for all of North America. She was very passionate of her career and in September of 2004 broke ground for the new Mitchell Family Funeral Home with her husband, son and daughter. They opened in February of 2005.

On November 20th, 1993, she (and daughter Stephanie) were united in marriage to Marty Mitchell at the 1st Baptist Church in Marshalltown. They made their home at 1210 Fairmeadows Road.

Susan was an active member of the Center Street Baptist Church where she served as AWANA leader and Sunday School teacher, childrens church leader and nursery helper (she always loved children), the Board of the Iowa Cemetery Association, the Board of the Iowa River Hospice and the steering committee for the new hospice house, the Relay for Life.

She will be greatly remembered for her love of God and family, her passion for funeral service (she was in the process of starting a memorial website for submitting recipes which would be done at the Taste of Home this fall), flowers, helping others, children, animals and reading.

She will be greatly missed by her husband Marty, daughter Stephanie (Mrs. Curt) Balmer, son Myles, her mother Dorothy B. Fisher of rural Garwin, sister Jeanne K. Fisher of Milford, Iowa, her Pomeranian dog Sammy, parent-in-laws Dean and Mary Mitchell of Marshalltown, sister-in-law Marna Mitchell of Melbourne, Aunt and Uncle Eldo and Maxine Hagedorn of Gladbrook, Aunt Mary Etta Fisher of rural Garwin, numerous cousins and friends. She would be joined by her granddaughter Haley Sue in November and niece Grace this fall, coming from China.

In death she has rejoined her father Carroll (who died Feb. 25th of this year), grandparents William Charles and Alice Heintz, Laurin and Velma Fisher, Aunt Gwendolyn Thompson and Uncle Gerald Fisher.

Marilyn K. Herrald

Marilyn K. Herrald, 61, of Marshalltown, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, at the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Pastor Kerry Jech officiating.

Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at the funeral home.

Following cremation, the graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown.

Memorials may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown.

Marilyn Kay Stewart

Marilyn Kay Stewart was born icon in rural Monroe, on Oct. 24, 1950.

She was the daughter of Amos Eugene Stewart Jr. and Melba Lucille (Silvers) Stewart.

Growing up, Marilyn enjoyed riding the horses and singing in the church choir.

She started attending school in Albia, and then later graduated from the West Marshall High School in State Center.

She then later went on to earn her Nurses Aid Certificate.

On Oct. 30, 1971, Marilyn was married icon to Rolland James "Jim" Herrald in Nevada.

She was employed at the JcPenney's in Marshalltown for a number of years.

She was a member of the Lioness Club, The Day Lily Club, The Secret Sisters of JcPenneys, and New Hope Christian Church.

Marilyn loved tending to her flower gardens, making jewelry, and spending time with her family.

She was also a collector of Jim Shore figurines and Terry Redlin paintings.

She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Rolland James "Jim" Herrald of Marshalltown; her two daughters: Sue Ellen (Jeff) Warnell of Johnston, and Michelle Lynn (Pat) Bell of Marshalltown; her four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Allison, Devon, and Megan; her step-grandchild, Kyle; her father, Amos Eugene (Riverta) Stewart Jr. of Albia; her six siblings, Dale (Susan) Stewart of Albia, Beverly Smith of Knoxville, Dean Stewart of Missouri, Ruth Stewart of Lincoln, Neb., Gary (Kim) Stewart of rural Bussey, and James Lee (Melinda) Stewart of rural Albia; and her many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her mother; her brother, Robert Stewart; and infant siblings, Nancy and John.

Juanita Ida Phelps

Juanita Ida Phelps, 98, of Muscatine, died on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, at Sunny Brook Assisted Living.

Funeral service were11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Kevin Gowdy officiated the service. Casket bearers will be her grandsons, David Phelps, Donald Phelps, Doug Phelps, Mike Beason, Howard Snider, Craig Wolf, Tom Phelps, Dan Phelps, Kevin Baab, and Mike Frantz. Burial took place in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation was 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Muscatine Humane Society. Juanita was born icon on Nov. 5, 1913, in Muscatine, the daughter of John W. and Hazel Satterwaite Macklan. She married icon Kenneth Dolson Phelps on Dec. 31, 1930, in Rock Island, Ill. He preceded her in death in 1988. She worked for Phelps Brothers Laundry. She was an avid bowler, bowling on several local leagues. She will be missed by her faithful companion, Apache, her poodle. She is survived by one son, Kenneth D. Phelps and wife, Janet, of Moravia; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Donald Phelps; one great-great-granddaughter; and two daughters-in-law, Dorothy Phelps and Rita Phelps.

Jordan Eli McCarty

Jordan Eli McCarty, age 19, was born icon Dec. 25, 1991 to Jon and Jody (Bonnett) McCarty. Jordan left his family and friends to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011. He is survived by his parents, Jon and Jody; his brother Jonathan McCarty (Amanda Pearson); his nephew Owen: and his niece Layla. He also leaves his grandparents Richard Max McCarty and Pam Briggs, Dwight (Hime) and Patricia Bonnett; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jordan was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, great-aunts and uncles.

Jordan attended Twin Cedars Community School District, from where he graduated in 2010. While in school, Jordan participated in baseball, football, track, wrestling and was an active member of the school's FFA Chapter. Upon graduation Jordan began working at 3M in Knoxville and served his community as a member of the Bussey Volunteer Fire Department. Jordan was baptized as a member of the Hamilton United Methodist Church.

Jordan enjoyed spending his free time in the great outdoors.

Whether it was hunting, fishing, four-wheeling or rock hunting, Jordan shared this time with his friends and family. All of Jordan's family and acquaintances grew to love him and knew that Jordan was guaranteed to greet them with a smile and care. Jordan will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Although gone, he has made an impact that will last forever. Visitation for Jordan began at 2 p.m., and will conclude at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, at the Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville, with Jordan's family present from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday evening. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at the Twin Cedars Community School Gymnasium, with Pastor Vince Goemaat officiating. Following services burial will be held at the Hamilton Cemetery in Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions shall be made to Jordan's family

Joseph William Soukup

Joseph William Soukup, 34, formerly of Central City, passed away Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011. A funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Prairieburg, by Rev. Wayne Droessler. A visitation will follow the mass on Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City. Additional visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 at Randolph Funeral Home in Corydon. A second funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at Randolph Funeral Home. Burial will be in Allerton Cemetery, Allerton.

Joseph William Soukup, the son of Leon and Joyce Carradus Soukup was born icon Nov. 11, 1976, in Cedar Rapids. His childhood years were spent in Central City, where he graduated from Central City High School in 1995. After high school, Joseph attended Ellsworth Community College on a full ride scholarship to play football. He transferred to Morningside College and played football for one year and then attended Missouri Valley College with a rodeo scholarship and later graduated with a business degree. He next went on to get his master's degree from Lindenwood University while he was the Assistant Rodeo Coach at Missouri Valley College.

Joseph married icon Leslie Jones on June 8, 2000, in Allerton. Joseph enjoyed rodeo, shed hunting and spending time with his family.

He was part of the Wayne Co. FSA Committee, IRCA, PRCA, and a faithful member of his church and on the Board of Directors for high school rodeo.

He also briefly taught as a college professor at Creston Community College and Indian Hills Community College.

Joseph owned and operated his own trucking business, convenience store, hunting lodge, as well as concession stands at the Iowa State Fair.

He enjoyed driving for Hy-Vee part time and farming, which was his favorite.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Leslie, of Allerton; three daughters, Alex, Elie Joe, and Jolie of Allerton; parents Leon and Joyce Soukup of Central City; three sisters, Tammy (Mike) Dougherty of Coggon, Sara (Brad) Lehr of Central City, and Katie (Jake) Stien of Waukee; one brother, John Soukup of Cedar Rapids; nieces and nephews, Tyler (Amanda) Dougherty, Megan and Siera Dougherty; two great nieces; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Mildred Soukup, Francis and Jean Carradus, Bernita Carradus-Gollobit; and an infant brother, Daniel.

Virginia J. Koch (1918-2011)

Memorial services for Virginia J. Koch, 92, formerly of Ankeny, will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, at Ankeny First United Methodist Church in Ankeny.

Interment will be 3 p.m., following memorial services at the Woodburn Cemetery in Woodburn.

She died Oct. 13, 2011, at Willow Park Assisted Living in Boise, Idaho, where she has resided since July 2009.

Virginia J. Koch was born icon Oct. 18, 1918 in Des Moines. She was raised by Clark and Beulah Edwards of Lovilia.

She graduated from the Lovilia High School in 1938 and attended the Albia Junior College 1939-1941.

While attending AJC she was employed at the Monroe County food stamp department.

She married icon Austin Robert (Bob) Koch, Oct. 4, 1941, in Chillicothe.

The couple lived briefly in Albia before moving to Marengo in 1948, where she was employed as Iowa County Probation officer for 14 years.

The couple moved to Oskaloosa in the fall of 1967 and to Ankeny in September of 1974.

Virginia was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was active in the Methodist Church, Welcome Wagon and election boards.

While in Ankeny, Virginia received the Citizen of the Year award in 1991.

Virginia is survived by her son, Clark Edward and Donna of Boise, Idaho; seven grandchildren and spouses, Dennis E. and Melanie Koch and Kathleen J. Koch of Boise; Wendy and Jim Maakestad of Hubbard; Laura and Bill Joy of Gresham, Ore.; Terri and Joe Mock of Kamrar; Candice Koch of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Nicholas and Joanna Koch of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, mother and father, and son, Austin Robert Koch, Jr.

Services are being handled by Ankeny Funeral Home.
