Verdon C. Eggenberger

The graveside funeral service and interment for Mr. Verdon Charles Eggenberger, 90, who died Saturday, October 4, 2003, will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 8th, at Lockridge Cemetery , Lockridge, IA. The Rev. Jack Wolgamuth will officiate. Friends may call today after 8:00 AM in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. A memorial for the West Burlington United Methodist Church has been established.

Frances Caslavka

Frances J. Caslavka, 83, of Fort Madison, died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at West Point Care Center in West Point.

Born Nov. 12, 1920, in Cedar Township, she was the daughter of Frank and Mary Nichting Pieper. On Oct. 2, 1943, she married Mark E. Scott in San Diego, Calif. He died on Nov. 6, 1969. On Sept. 20, 1978, she married Milvoy Caslavka in West Point, and he died on May 16, 1987.

Mrs. Caslavka was a homemaker.

She was a member of Ss. Mary and Joseph Church and Catholic Ladies Auxiliary.

Suvivors include three sons, Paul (Judi) Scott of West Point, Lee Scott of West Des Moines and Pat (Mary Ilmberger) Scott of Fort Madison; four daughters, Alicia "Lee" Meller and Helen (Mike) Johnson, both of Fort Madison, Janice (Tom) Winnike of Santa Fe, Texas, and Carol (Mike) Heitz of Naples, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; four great–grandchildren and two sisters, Lucille Merschman of St. Paul and Ruth Holtkamp of Hillsboro.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, one brother, two nieces and two nephews.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. and a wake service will be at 7 p.m. at King–Lynk Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Caslavka will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ss. Mary and Joseph Church in Fort Madison, with the Rev. Thomas Parlette officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Aquinas High School or Marquette High School. Contributions may be left at King–Lynk Funeral Home or at Ss. Mary and Joseph Church the day of the service.

Donald Wills

Donald L. "Jim" Wills, 79, of Monmouth, Ill., died at 4:20 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Galesburg, Ill. Arrangements are pending at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth.

Edith M. Avery

The graveside funeral service and interment for Mrs. Edith Maxine Avery, 78, who died Thursday, October 7, 2004, will be Monday, October 11th, at 10:00 AM in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . The Rev. Trevor Davis will officiate. Friends may call from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, October 10th, in Lunning Chapel. The family will not be present. A memorial has been established.

Calvin B. Swafford

The funeral service for Mr. Calvin Baye Swafford, 86, who died Thursday, October 7, 2004, will be Monday, October 11th, at 1:30 PM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Jack Wolgamuth will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 9:00 AM on Sunday, October 11th, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A memorial has been established for the West Burlington Police Department.

David Rehm

David Lee Rehm, 48, of Fort Madison, died at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Born July 21, 1955, in Burlington, he was the son of Robert and Betty Bentrim Rehm of Fort Madison. On Sept. 4, 1982, he married Kimberly Ramsey in Fort Madison.

Mr. Rehm was a meat cutter and worked at Naifeh's and Hy–Vee, both in Fort Madison. He later worked at Fleck Sales and Frito–Lay.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed boating, snow skiing, white water rafting and deer hunting. He was a member of Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife; his mother of Fort Madison; two brothers, Mike Rehm of Burlington and Pat Rehm of Fort Madison; one sister, Jean Chesnut of Fort Madison; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

The family will gather with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Barr Memorial Chapel. The body has been cremated.

A memorial service for Mr. Rehm will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Daniel Moore officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in rural Fort Madison.

A memorial has been established.

Herbert Lachnitt

Herbert "Herbie" Frank Lachnitt, 85, of Burlington, died at 8:32 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Burlington Care Center.

Born July 16, 1919, in Glatz, Germany, he was the son of Frank and Agnes Volkmer Lachnitt. On Dec. 28, 1946, he married Martha Nelson at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Burlington.

Mr. Lachnitt was an optician at America Optical for 38 years, at Ostertag–Benson for four years and part time at Pearl Optical for 2 1/2 years. He retired in 1991.

He was a 1937 graduate of St. Paul's Catholic High School. He was a member of Ss. John and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus No. 568, Holy Name Society and American Federation of Musicians. He loved music and repaired band instruments. He played in Burlington Municipal Band for over 50 years and led Herbie's Little German Band for many years. He enjoyed making nativity sets and telling stories.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Michael Lachnitt of Burlington; three daughters, Leeanne (Ted) Fenton and Marilynn Lachnitt, both of Burlington, and Karla (Joel) Schuff of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Lisa Klostermann, Erik Fenton, Gerhardt Lachnitt, Susan Fenton, Benjamin Schuff and Emily Schuff; one sister, Mary Frances Stevens of Burlington; and his "favorite" niece and nephew, Karen Nelson and Kurt Stevens.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Hass–Thielen Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends following a 6:30 p.m. Christian Wake Service to 8 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m.

The funeral service for Mr. Lachnitt will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf officiating. Music will be provided by Des Moines County Resurrection choir. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Burlington Notre Dame Music Boosters.

Jean Church

Jean P. Church, 81, of Rosebush Gardens Health Care Center in Burlington, formerly of Fort Madison, died at 1 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Rosebush Gardens Health Care Center.

Born Dec. 4, 1922, in Whitten, she was the daughter of Otha and Ethel Stevens Richardson. On Sept. 29, 1939, she married Bernard J. Church. He died Jan. 24, 1973.

Mrs. Church retired from Shaeffer Pen Co. in Fort Madison. She also worked at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Wilkinson of Burlington; three grandchildren and six great–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hofbauer–Schmitz–Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson, with family receiving friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Church will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hofbauer–Schmitz–Lynk Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established.

Jack Johnson

Jack W. Johnson, 84, of Burlington, died at 6:53 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 9, 1920, in Burlington, he was the son of Elmer Remus and Ruth Elvera Brown Johnson. On Nov. 7, 1941, he married Bonnie L. Doyle in Kahoka, Mo.

Mr. Johnson was a police officer and captain for the city of Burlington.

He was a graduate of Burlington High School and Burlington Junior College. He was a Marine Corps veteran, serving four years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police, Iowa State Police Association, Police Blackhawk Unit No. 3, 1st Marine Division Association and China Marine Association.

Survivors include his wife and two sisters, Evelyn Spears of Hermitage, Pa., and Eileen Johnson of Columbia, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to the time of service Tuesday at Prugh's Chapel, where the family will receive friends two hours prior to the time of service.

The funeral for Mr. Johnson will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Tevis officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League and AMVETS Post 29 will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Eldon Horner

Eldon R. Horner, 68, of Monmouth, Ill., died at 3:55 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, Ill.

Born Feb. 14, 1936, in LaHarpe, Ill., he was the son of Raymond and Mary Shoemate Horner. On Feb. 4, 1956, he married Joan Apt in Terre Haute, Ill.

Mr. Horner was a farmer.

He was raised and educated in Terre Haute, where he graduated from high school. He was a member of First Methodist Church in Monmouth. He enjoyed watching car races and reading.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Peggy Irey of Corona, Calif.; two sons, Kevin Horner of Little York, Ill., and Chris Horner of Greeneville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; and one great–granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant sister and one infant daughter.

Visitation will be Wednesday and Thursday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The funeral for Mr. Horner will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Turnbull Funeral Home, with John Earle officiating. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park in Monmouth. The body has been cremated.

Memorials have been established for the American Cancer Society, St. Jude and the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

George Lyons

George Edward Lyons, 84, of Burlington, died at 3:20 P.M. Friday, November 25, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 4, 1921, in Davenport, he was the son of Joseph and Mary Yakle Lyons. On June 25, 1942, he married Ruth Jean Simon in Burlington.

Mr. Lyons was an accountant for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.

He was a graduate of the University of Iowa and was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and the Artus chapter of Omicron Delta Gamma National Scholastic Honor Societies. He was of the Protestant faith. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific with the Radar and Artillery Unit. He sang in the First Baptist Church Choir for 60 years and in Bel Canto. He was active in amateur radio and photography. He also was a member of the Order of the Arrow in the Boy Scouts.

Survivors include his wife Ruth, of Burlington; three children, daughter, Dianne (Dr. James) Ruggles of Stockton, California; son, Dr. Dean (Coleen) Lyons of West Burlington; and daughter, Debra Jo Lyons of Lakewood, Colorado; five grandchildren; two step–grandchildren; one great–grandson; and one step–great–grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one son.

Funeral Services for Mr. Lyons will be held in Parkside First Baptist Church on Saturday, December 3, 2005, at 11:00 A.M. Pastor Marshall Jackman and Rev. Tyrone Henderson will officiate. Full military rites by VFW Post 10102 & 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League and AmVets Post 29 will be conducted at the church.

Interment will follow at Aspen Grove Cemetery . The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

A Memorial has been established for Parkside First Baptist Church.

James Kaltefleiter

James J. Kaltefleiter, 74, of Amarillo, Texas, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004.

Born March 16, 1930, in West Point, he was the son of George and Helen Kaltefleiter. In 1962, he married Mary Kay Snaadt in West Point.

Mr. Kaltefleiter worked for the Department of Energy for 33 years before retiring from the Pantex Plant in 1995.

He graduated from St. Mary's School of West Point. He was a Korean War Navy veteran. He moved to Amarillo in 1978. He was a founding member of St. Thomas and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1475, the 40 & 8, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks and the Loyal Order of the Moose. Following retirement, he spent countless hours volunteering at the Veterans Hospital in Amarillo. He enjoyed auto racing, vintage cars and pheasant hunting.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Caroline Ponirakis of Cortland, N.Y.; one son, John Kaltefleiter of Athens, Ga.; two grandchildren; one sister, Lucille Samms of Prattville, Ala.; one brother, Carl Kaltefleiter of West Point; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, three sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. today at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., Amarillo.

The funeral Mass for Mr. Kaltefleiter will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Amarillo, with Monsignor Joseph Tash officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery in West Point.

A memorial has been established for the American Heart Association.

Marie J. Hamilton

The Memorial Service for Mrs. Marie J. Hamilton, age 71, who passed away Friday, November 28, 2003, will be 1:30 PM this afternoon in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home with Reverend David A. Nash officiating. There will be no visitation. As per her request her body has been cremated. A memorial has been established for Burlington Care Center's Alzheimer's Unit. Frances Hudgell

Frances Louise Hudgell, 91, of Washington, died at 8:08 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at United Presbyterian Home in Washington.

Born Dec. 23, 1910, in Worth County, she was the daughter of Roscoe and Hilda Rhodes Hill. On June 1, 1931, she married Hugh Harold Hudgell in Nashua. He died March 31, 1958.

Mrs. Hudgell lived most of her life on a farm north of Fairfield.

She was a graduate of Fertile High School in Fertile and attended Parsons College. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Methodist Church and Chapter PEO HA. She lived in Iowa City for 14 years after her retirement. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Gamma Circle.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Stater of Fairfield; three grandchildren; seven great–grandchildren; and one brother, Roger Hill of Tucson.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.

The funeral for Mrs. Hudgell will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Jan Burns–Hintze officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for First Presbyterian Church and United Presbyterian Church Home.

Jason Townsend

Jason Lee Townsend, 24, of Dublin, Ga., died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004.

Born Feb. 10, 1980, in Laurens County, Ga., he was the son of Bob and Debra Townsend.

Mr. Townsend was a truck loader for Farmers Furniture Co.

He attended Southeastern Community College in Fort Madison.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Bob and Sue Townsend of Dublin; his mother and stepfather, Debra and Jack Woodley of Donnellson; one son, Jonathan; two sisters, Penny Roszell and Angie Strickland, both of Dublin; and two brothers, Randy Townsend of Gray, Ga., and Bobby Townsend Jr. of East Dublin, Ga.

The graveside service for Mr. Townsend was Thursday in Northview Cemetery , with the Rev. Greg Lowery officiating.

Stanley Funeral Home of Dublin was in charge of arrangements.

Gary Nelson

Gary Nelson, 65, of Burlington, died at 8:40 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at Kewanee Hospital in Kewanee, Ill. Arrangements are pending at Lunning Chapel.

Dorothy Frey

Dorothy B. Frey, 94, of rural Carthage, Ill., died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Heartland Health Care Center in Paxton, Ill.

Born July 12, 1910, in rural Carthage, she was the daughter of E.M. and Julia Lane Harter. On July 29, 1933, she married Thomas R. Frey in Carthage. He died July 31, 1994.

A lifelong resident of rural Carthage, Mrs. Frey was a teacher for four years at East Union Grade School, southeast of Carthage. After raising her family, she taught at Union Douglas School, south of Carthage, for 11 years.

She attended Independence School and graduated from Carthage High School. She was a 1931 graduate of Carthage College and attended University of Iowa and Western Illinois University for additional course work. She was a member of Delvers Club, Jolly Housekeepers Club, First United Methodist Church and Triangle Sunday School Class. She enjoyed gardening and animals, especially her cats.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas Frey of Savoy, Ill., James R. Frey of Nashville, Tenn., and John D. Frey of Oakland, Ill.; four grandchildren; and five great–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral service for Mrs. Frey will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lamporte Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Pyatt officiating. Burial will be in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.

Memorials have been established for Kibbe Hancock Heritage Museum and First United Methodist Church in Carthage.

Clarice Scott

The Lord took home Clarice May Scott, 102, (granny to everyone) on Sunday, December 5, 2004, at 6:40 p.m. at the Fort Madison Health Center. She was born on January 4, 1902, in Mills County, IA to George & Emma Titterington Galbraith. Survivors include her only child Elaine Seitz and son–in–law Dwight of Denmark, IA; six grandchildren, Daryl (Brenda) Seitz of Donnellson, IA, Vicky Housman of Fort Madison, IA, Debbie (Tom) Herold of West Point, IA, Rhonda Seitz (Marty Parker) of Fort Madison, IA, Shaun (Mark) Fraise of West Point, IA and Jeff (Lisa) Seitz of Denmark IA; eight great–grandchildren, Doug (Jennifer) Seitz, Chris Seitz, Tamara (Brent) Baker, Angela Peitz, Rusty Lee Seitz, Justin, Nicole & Caitlin Fraise; and four great–great–grandchildren, Drake & Joley Seitz, Chloe & Olivia Baker. She is also survived by two nieces & one nephew.

Clarice was married to Elmer Scott. She lived on her family farm near Gladstone, IL. Her primary job on the farm was raising chickens. Granny moved to Denmark, IA in 1956 to live with her daughter. Upon moving to Iowa, her career was redirected to help raise her six grandchildren. She attended Denmark Congregational Church and was a member of the Denmark Senior Citizens. Granny was an avid speller and in her school days won many spelling bees and later in life could spell any word her grandchildren would ask her. She loved going to horse shows to watch her daughter and grandchildren show horses.

Granny was proud of her age, but she seldom ever acted it. She was young at heart and always told everyone she felt like a teenager. She always said she wanted to live to be a centenarian, which she did, and was only 29 days short of celebrating her 103rd birthday. Granny's birthdays were always celebrated in a big way, her life was a celebration. Granny was always happy and enjoyed life to the fullest and made the people around her feel the same way. She enjoyed watching WWF wrestling, "The Dukes of Hazzard," and listening to John Denver.

The last six years of her life she resided at the Fort Madison Health Center, where she was taken loving care of by the staff there. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and four brothers.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Tuesday and the family will meet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the King–Lynk Funeral Home. A private family graveside service will be held. Burial will be in the Denmark Cemetery . A memorial has been established for Lee County Hospice. Contributions may be left at King–Lynk Funeral Home.
