Albert Smith

Albert Carl Smith, loving and devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather, age 89 of OSF St. Francis Continuation Care and Nursing Home Center passed away at 4:55 PM Wednesday, November 1, 2000 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born November 16, 1910 at St. Francis Hospital in Burlington, he was the son of Andrew and Lillian Albertsen Smith. On August 9, 1937 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church he married Margaret "Peg" Hermann. She died February 15, 1993.

Mr Smith attended St. John's Grade School and graduated from St. Paul's High School in 1929. He was an active Boy Scout in his youth, later volunteering as a Boy Scout Leader for many years.

He worked for Snyder and Hertzler Shoe Store as a salesman/buyer for 16 years and a manager for 19 years. He also worked at Brown's Shoe Fit as a salesman/buyer for 15 years. He retired in 1977.

He was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, serving as usher, money counter and on several committees. He was a member of the Elks, the Eagles, and the Carthage Lake Fishing Club and several bridge clubs. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society, St. Vincent De Paul Society, Knights of Columbus, and was a Black Knight Pall Bearer for the Knights of Columbus.

He was an energetic volunteer at St. Francis Care Center and with the YMCA's KeenAgers. He was an avid golfer, bicyclist, loved to travel, and bowled on the St. John's League. He was a very compassionate caregiver to his family and friends.

Survivors include one son, George R. "Bob" (Connie) Smith of Burlington; one daughter, Nancy E. (Jim) Fleming of Arvada, CO; three grandaughters, Mary Beth (Mike) Delaney of Ottumwa, Ann Marie (Stann) Smith-Tate of Kansas City, MO and Rebecca (Tony) Otero of Denver, CO; two grandsons, Christopher (Kim) Fleming of Seattle, WA and Nathan (Mary) Fleming of Laramie, WY; and one great grandson, Alexander Delaney; three sisters, Hester Moore of Huntington Beach, CA, Joan Moore of Mill City, OR and Fran Lemanski of Upland, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews including Jeff Hermann and family of Springfield, IL.

Besides his wife Peg, he was proceeded in death by his parents, one grandson Mathew, three sisters, and two brothers.

Visitation will be after 8:00 AM Friday, November 3, at the Hass Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:00 PM after which the family will recieve friends until 9:00 PM.

The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Smith will be 10:30 AM Saturday, November 4, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf will be the Celebrant. Pallbearers will be, Jim Fleming, Christopher Fleming, Nathan Fleming, Mike Delaney, Jeff Hermann, and Stann Tate. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to OSF St. Francis Continuation Care and Nursing Home Center.

Ethel McAdams

Ethel N. McAdams, age 87 of the Great River Medical Center Klein Center, formerly of Oquawka, IL passed away at 1:35 AM Monday, December 4, 2000 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born August 23, 1913 in Conran, MO she was the daughter of Newton B. and Gertrude Mosely Hopvims. She married Charles Butler June 18, 1933 in St. Louis, MO. He died November 4, 1959. She married Henry Nuske June 25, 1966 in Paducah, KY. He died March 29, 1984. She married Travers McAdams October 8, 1984 in Springfield, MO. He died November 13, 1991.

Mrs. McAdams was a graduate of Salem High School.

She was a loan officer with the Bank of St. Louis. She retired in 1966.

She was a member of the Christian Scientist Church.

Survivors include one son, David Butler of Naples, FL; one daughter, Barbara Cochran of Gladstone, IL; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her three husbands she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and six sisters.

The body of Mrs. McAdams has been cremated as of her request.

The Memorial Service for Mrs. McAdams will be 11:00 AM Saturday, December 9, at the Eaton Funeral Home Chapel in Sullivan, MO, with Reverend Bill Hafley officiating. Inurnment will be in Union City Cemetery , Union, MO.

The Hass Funeral Home is in care of the local arrangements.

Evelyn Kinsley

Evelyn Kinsley, age 89 of Burlington passed away at 2:15 PM Friday, December 8, 2000 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born September 25, 1911 in Wapello, she was the daughter of Nathan Orville and Nellie Maude Nearhood Thompson. On October 25, 1962 in Springfield, IL she married Charles H. Kinsley.

Mrs. Kinsley was a dispatcher for the Rock Island Railroad and worked in the restuarant business for years In later years she was a homemaker.

She was of the Protestant faith. She was a member of the Wapello VFW Post 5166 Auxillary. She was an avid fisher in her younger years and later liked sewing and crocheting, she was also an avid reader and very family oriented.

Survivors include her husband, Charles; one son, Albert Nathan Nicola of Columbus City; and one daughter, Clydene Nicola-Grubb of Whittier, CA; five grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, and one son.

Visitation will be after 8:00 AM Monday, December 11, at the Hass Funeral Home until 8:00 PM. There will be no family visitation.

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Kinsley will be 1:00 PM Tuesday, December 12, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home. Rev. Dr. Frank R. Beaty of the New Hope Community Church will officiate. Pallbearers will be Tom Nicola, Bob Warren, Randell Eden, and Alan Eden. Honorary Pallbearers will be Joe Grubb and Jeff Grubb. Interment will be Wapello Cemetery , Wapello, IA.

A memorial has been established.

Gladys Remaly

Gladys May Remaly, age 96, of Burlington, passed away at 6:10 p.m. Sunday, December 17, 2000,at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 10, 1904, in Memphis, Missouri, she was the daughter of James Perry and Stella May Dulley Huffman. On August 23, 1921, she married Archie Ledbetter in Mount Pleasant. They later divorced. On June 17, 1933, she married Horace Wilson Remaly in Monmouth, Illinios. He died May 19, 1976.

Mrs. Remaly was a homemaker.

She was a member of Sunnyside Avenue Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved flowers, wearing jewelry, shopping, baking, church activites, needlework and listening to Lawrence Welk music.

Survivors include one son, Clifton Ledbetter of Mount Pleasant; four daughters, Margaret M. Hinman of Cordova, Tenn., Thelma L. Hill of Burlington, Joyce M. Snyder of West Burlington and Sandra B. Hunter of Fort Madison; 17 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth Burns of Galesburg, Ill.; nieces and nephews.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sons, three brothers and three sisters.

Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, December 19, at Hass Funeral Home, where family will recieve friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m.

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Remaly will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday December 20, in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home, with the Revs. Maurice Moore and Tyrone C. Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Old Stone Cemetery , west of Sperry.

Memorials have been established for Sunnyside Avenue Baptist Church and First Baptist Church.

Leo Anderson

Leo J. Anderson, age, 63, of Ramsey, Minn., formerly of Burlington, passed away Friday, July 21, 2000, in Ramsey.

Born Dec. 31, 1936, in Burlington, he was the son of Lawrence Glynn and Rosa Catherine Thele Anderson. He married Susan Stedman in 1957.

Mr. Anderson was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He began his insurance career working nights while attending college, and home office insurance work became his lifetime occupation. He served as a life underwriter for many years and held an FLMI. In recent years, his knowledge of business made him a valuable consultant.

He served as lector and eucharistic minister at the Church of St. Timothy. He was a long time participant in local government, served on the Blaine(Minn.) City Council and was the current chairman of the Ramsey Planning Commission. His hobbies included travel, the outdoors and birds.

Survivors include his wife, two sons,Tom and Joe Anderson, both of the Ramsey area;two daughters,Jeanne Anderson and Sharon Anderson, both of the Ramsey area; his mother of Burlington; two brothers, Paul C. Anderson of West Burlington and John R. Anderson of West Point; five sisters, Rosemary A. Friedman of Burlington, Catherine A. Anderson of Fort Madison, Carol A. Huber of Moline, Ill., Margaret Klaassen of Florida, and Jane Crawford of Brighton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his father and his father-in-law.

The funeral for Mr. Anderson was July 24 at the Church of St. Timothy in Blaine Minn. Burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the Nature Conservancy and the American Cancer Society.

The Hass Funeral Home was in care of the local arrangements.

Garfield Haney

Garfield V. Haney, age 95 of Mediapolis, passed away at 8:00 PM Thursday, July 27, 2000 at Integrated Health Services of Mediapolis.

Born September 13, 1904 in Blue River, WI, he was the son of Henry and Mae Haney. On April 24, 1964 he married Marian Baird in Oquawka, Ill.

Mr. Haney was a fifth generation commercial fisherman and held a barge captain's license.

He loved river life. He was of the Methodist Faith.

Survivors include his wife, Marian of Mediapolis; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one daughter and three brothers.

There will be no visitation or service. The body of Mr. Haney has been cremated.

The Hass Funeral Home was in care of the arrangements.

Stanley Waligora

Stanley J. Waligora, age 90 of Burlington passed away at 4:33 PM Wednesday, August 30, 2000 at the Genesis Medical Center East Campus in Davenport.

Born Sept. 22, 1909 in LaSalle, Ill., he was the son of Michael and Antonette Belinski Waligora. He married Mary Louise Miklavcic on Sept. 22, 1929, in LaSalle.

Mr. Waligora was a baker at Lind's Bakery and Benner Tea Co., both in Burlington. He retired in 1972.

He was a Member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church and was an avid bowler and gardener. He enjoyed watching bseball and football. He valued a simple life and the importance of hard work.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; one son, Edwin Waligora of Bettendorf; one daughter, Barbara Carlson of Burlington; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter Waligora of Peru, Ill.; a half sister, Sister M. Georgiana of Chicago, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceeded in death by his parents and two half brothers.

Visitation will be from noon to 8:00 PM Friday, September 1, at the Hass Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 10:00 AM Saturday, September 2, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Burlington.

The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Waligora will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 2, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Rev. Father Robert McAleer will be the celebrant. Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf will be the concelebrant. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Eugene Crawford

Eugene Leroy Crawford, age 74 of Burlington passed away at 11:03 PM, Saturday, October 14, 2000 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born November 9, 1925 in Galesburg, IL he was the son of Noble Eugene and Eva Adcock Crawford. On August 17, 1949 he married Jean Ellen Swore. They later divorced. She died May 3, 1996. He then married Lois Ensminger Peterson on May 19, 1962 in Biggsville, IL. She died November 14, 1988.

Mr. Crawford was an Airplane & Engine Mechanic in WWII with the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was a Humane Officer for the City of Burlington for 10 years retiring in 1982. He also worked as a motor route driver with The Hawkeye for about 20 years.

He was a member of the West Avenue Baptist Church. He was on the Board of Commissions for the Low Rent Housing Agency. He loved old cars and spending time with his family.

Survivors include three daughters, Rita Schulz of Charlotte, NC, Debra Price of Burlington, and Laura Smith of Enola, PA; three sons, John Peterson of Gosnell, AR, Larry Peterson of Virginia Beach, VA, and Brent Crawford of West Des Moines; 19 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one sister, Joan Bushnell of Calhoun, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be afternoon Monday, October 16, at the Hass Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM.

The Funeral Service for Mr. Crawford will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 17 in the Chapel of the Hass Funeral Home. Pastors Kirk R. Bennett and Gerry Olson will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Mike Azamar, Corey Barnes, Rosanna Azamar, Lisa Peterson, April Peterson, Jeff Runnells, and Heather Cato.

Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the VFW Posts 10102 and 9162.

A memorial has been established to the Homeward Bound Animal Adoption Center.
