John Klein

John Milton Klein, 82, of Burlington, died at 1:14 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 29, 1922, in Bur–lington, he was the son of Arthur James and Emma Christina Senti Klein. On July 31, 1948, he married Mary Louise Zeigler in Burlington.

Mr. Klein worked at Klein Manufacturing Co. for 47 years, a family owned business established in 1909. He served as purchasing manager, treasurer and president.

He was a 1939 graduate of Burlington High School, a 1943 graduate of the University of Iowa and took advanced courses in business administration at Harvard University in Boston. He was a World War II Navy veteran with the rank of 1st lieutenant. He was on deck of the USS Skagit during the signing of the peace treaty in Tokyo Bay in 1945. He was a life member and elder of Zion United Church of Christ, where he was a youth Sunday school teacher for 34 years.

His other memberships and community service included a centurion member of the Kiwanis Club, where he enjoyed Santa Claus duty at Christmas, chairman of the Christian Action Organization, United Way president from 1979 to 1980 and campaign chairman from 1978 to 1979, when it was the first United Way in Iowa to surpass its goal, Service Corps of Retired Executives, charter member of Skiowans Club of Burlington, Boy Scout Troop 25 Committee, BSA Blackhawk District chairman, BSA S.E. Iowa Council chairman, BSA recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, selected Junior Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Young Man of Burlington in 1948, leadership in establishing the Hitching Post Youth Center, chairman of Illiowa Purchasing Managers, member of Iowa Association of Business and Industry, a 50–year member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association.

He enjoyed YMCA badminton, Hawkeye football, water sports including white water rafting, boundary waters, Mississippi River canoeing, was an avid snow skier and enjoyed golfing on the Burlington Kiwanis Golf League. He also enjoyed traveling, fine music, gardening and fixing things.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Roger Klein of Santa Rosa, Calif., Kenneth Klein of Newark, Del., and Steven Klein of rural Oakville; one daughter, Marjorie Douglas of Milan, Ill.; five grandchildren; six nieces; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Visitation will be from noon to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Klein will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Zion United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Gary Chapman officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marines Corps League and AMVETs Honor Guard will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Frances R. Gorman

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Frances Rita Gorman, 88, who died Tuesday, September 2, 2003, will be today at 10:00 AM in St. Paul's Catholic Church. The Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf will be the celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery . A memorial has been established for Notre Dame Catholic Schools.

Ruth A. Schultz

The graveside memorial funeral service and inurnment for Mrs. Ruth A. Schultz, 87, who died Thursday, September 4, 2003, will be Saturday, September 6th at 10:00 AM in Aspen Grove Cemetery . The Rev. Tyrone Henderson will officiate. There will be no visitation. A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Irma B. Yakle

The funeral service for Mrs. Irma Brooks Yakle, 96, who died Thursday, September 4, 2003, will be Monday, September 8th at 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. David Nash will officiate. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery . Friends may call after 8:00 AM on Monday, September 8th and the family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the time of service. A memorial has been established for First Christian Church.

Nancy Peterson

Nancy C. Peterson, 75, of Monmouth, Ill., died at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at OSF St. Mary's Medical Center in Galesburg, Ill.

Born March 4, 1929, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Elmer and Thelma Peterson Carlson. On Nov. 7, 1947, she married Beauford A. Peterson in Monmouth.

Mrs. Peterson worked for Monmouth Materials Co. for 38 years.

She was raised and educated in Stronghurst, where she attended local rural schools, was a graduate of high school and later attended Monmouth College. After retiring, she enjoyed buying and selling collectibles and antiques. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she served as organist for 40 years. She enjoyed taking part in all church activities.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Michael Peterson of Waldoboro, Maine; two grandsons, one sister, Gracie LeFevre of Simsbury, Conn.; and one niece, one nephew and one cousin.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be today and Thursday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, where the family will receive friends following the graveside service at Immanuel Baptist Church to celebrate her life.

The graveside service for Mrs. Peterson will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery , with Pastors Michael Peterson and Gary Shank officiating.

A memorial as been established for Immanuel Baptist Church.

MICHAEL D. ANDREW

Funeral Services for Mr. Michael D. Andrew, 56, of West Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Burlington, who died on Monday, September 22, 2003, at his home will be held in Prugh's Chapel on Thursday, September 25, 2003, at 2:00 P.M. Rev. Trevor Davis will be the officiant. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery with full military rites conducted by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Marine Corps League. The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel this evening from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. A memorial has been established in memory of Mr. Michael D. Andrew.

THOMAS LEE RETTIG

Private Family Graveside Inurnment for Mr. Thomas Lee Rettig, 42, of San Francisco, California, formerly of Burlington, who died on Tuesday, September 16, 2003, at San Francisco General Hospital in San Francisco will be held at a later date in Carman Cemetery , Carman, Illinois. There will be no formal visitation or services. Mr. Thomas Lee Rettig has been cremated.

James Scholer

James O. Scholer, 76, of Naples, Fla., died at 7:55 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, in Naples.

Born Jan. 20, 1927, in Burlington, he was the son of Fred E. and Leoneda Luchner Scholer. On April 23, 1949, he married Ann Kurimski in Burlington.

Mr. Scholer retired as vice president of Carl A. Nelson in 1992 after 44 years of service. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church in Burlington and St. Ann Catholic Church in Naples, the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club, United Way, Boy Scouts of America and the American Little League Association.

Survivors include his wife, Ann of Naples; three sons, Fred Scholer of Burlington, Randy Scholer of Cedar Rapids, and Lenny Scholer of Newport News, Va.; one daughter, Pam Nelson of Burlington; nine grandchildren; one great–grandson; one cousin and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by infant twin daughters, his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Prugh's Chapel. The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel on Thursday morning from 8:30 until 10:00 a.m.

A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Burlington with the Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the American Heart Association.

Mary D. Scott

The funeral service for Mrs. Mary D. Scott, 49, who died Thursday, September 25, 2003, will be Thursday, October 2nd, at 1:30 PM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf will officiate. Friends may call after 8:00 AM today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 PM. A memorial has been established for Farm Aid.

William A. "Bill" Fogelstrom

The memorial funeral service for Mr. William A. "Bill" Fogelstrom, 72, who died Saturday, September 27, 2003, will be Friday, October 3rd at 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel, with courtesy Masonic Rites conducted by Patriot Lodge 680 AF&AM of Burlington. The Rev. Steve Goughnour will officiate. Inurnment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery . Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League will conduct Military Rites. Friends may call after 8:00 AM on Friday, October 3rd, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service. A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Paul G. Torn

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Paul George Torn, 78, who died Sunday, September 28, 2003, will be Thursday, October 2nd at 10:00 AM in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. The Rev. Patrick Lumsden will be the celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 11:00 AM today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Christian Wake Service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Iowa Civil Air Patrol Cadet Scholarship Foundation.

Roy Stone

Roy S. Stone, 86, of Centerville, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Born Jan. 8, 1918, near Sumner, Neb., he was the son of Samuel and Clara M. Burns Stone. On April 5, 1969, he married Florence A. Chapman VanLandingham in Centerville. She died April 24, 2003.

Mr. Stone farmed all of his life in Appanoose County, east of Centerville.

He was a World War II Army veteran and served in the anti–aircraft division. He was a member of the 18/80 Club and First Baptist Church in Centerville.

Survivors include three stepdaughters, Patricia Woodside of Burlington, Christina Sebben of Moline, Ill., and Linda Logsdon of Centerville; eight stepgrandchildren; 14 stepgreat–grandchildren; two sisters, Opal Ludwig of Browning, Mo., and Margaret Epp of Kearney, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one infant sister.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Schmidt Family Funeral Home, 501 N. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.

The funeral for Mr. Stone will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Schmidt Family Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lloyd Johnston officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by Centerville veterans organizations will be in Mt. Ararat Cemetery , east of Centerville.

Memorials have been established for the 18/80 Club or First Baptist Church.

Orville Anderson

Orville Frederick Anderson, 85, of rural Sperry, died Monday evening, Oct. 4, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 19, 1919, in rural Sperry, he was the son of Roy F. and Alice D. Wunnenberg Anderson. On Jan. 24, 1948, he married Helen Howe in Burlington.

Mr. Anderson farmed throughout his life.

He loved the land and had prepared it for planting this past spring. He also enjoyed caring for his Angus cows. He was a World War II Army Air Force veteran and attended Kingston United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Gary Anderson of Mediapolis; two grandchildren; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Anderson will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home, with the Rev. Beth Briggs officiating. Burial will be in Kossuth Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Kingston United Methodist Church and Great River Hospice.

THEODORE "TED" VINOVICH

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Theodore "Ted" Vinovich, 83, of Burlington, who died on Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at Great River Medical Center, Klein Center, will be held in St. Paul's Catholic Church on Friday, October 8, 2004, at 10:00 A.M. Rev. Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf will be the celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with full graveside military rites being conducted by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marine Corp League and AMVETS Post 29. Friends may call after 12:00 noon today, with a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 P.M., after which the family will receive friends until 9:00 P.M. in Prugh's Chapel. A memorial has been established for the Alzheimer's Unit at Klein Center.

Nolan L. Phillips

Nolan L. Phillips, 82, of Burlington, Iowa, died on Saturday, October 4, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Born October 15, 1920, in Rutledge, Missouri. He was the son of William and Bessie Cooley Phillips. He married Delma M. Bradley on May 8, 1948, in Kirksville, Missouri.

He was a member of the Church of Christ and was active in the work of the church.

He graduated from Rutledge, Missouri, High School in 1938. He was inducted into the U.S. Army November 20, 1942. He served in the Middle East during World War II. He was honorably discharged December 30, 1945. He farmed in Missouri for a number of years and was later employed at General Electric in Burlington, Iowa, retiring after 18 years of service.

He was an avid gardener and loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Deborah Nickell of Bristol, Virginia, and Peggy (Jon) Rhodes of Oakville, Iowa; one sister, Shirlee Davis of Fort Madison, Iowa; five grandchildren; three great–grandchildren; five nieces and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, two brothers, one sister and a son–in–law.
