Gladys Engebretson

Funeral service for Gladys Viola Engebretson, 89, was held Monday morning at Bethel Lutheran Church, Vinje. Rev. Dani Jo Ninke-Greaver officiated.

Margaret Nesje was organist for the service and Elaine Rebelein sang "I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry" and "Precious Lord." Congregational hymn was "Beneath The Cross of Jesus."

The casket was carried by Fred Engebretson, Jon Folven, Gary Brue, Scott Engebretson, Todd Anthony and Chuck Engebretson. Interment was in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery.

The daughter of Ole and Anna (Tweed) Brue, Gladys was born April 13, 1908, in Pierre, S. Dak. When she was an infant, her family moved to rural Joice. She graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1927 and taught school for several years in rural Winnebago County.

She married Gayler A. Engebretson in Scarville June 26, 1931. The couple moved to a farm west of Vinje in 1943 where she lived the remainder of her live. Gayler died July 1, 1997. A longtime member of Bethel Lutheran Church, she served faithfully in numerous capacities. She was a former 4-H leader.

Gladys Engebretson died the evening of December 31, at her daughter’s home in LaPorte, Ind.

She is survived by one son, Rodney and his wife Barbara Engebretson of LaCrosse, Wis.; two daughters, Lorraine and her husband Jack Bunce of LaPorte, Ind., and Marcia and her husband Ray Kyrsh of Elk Grove, Ill.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Ernest Brue of Lake Mills; two sisters, Maxine Nelson of Northwood and Genevieve Folven of Albert Lea, Minn., and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Gayler and three sisters.

Margaret S. Swearingen

Longtime Thompson resident Margaret Sarah Swearingen, 88, died Friday, December 19, 1997, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Care Unit, Mason City.

Her funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon, December 23, at First Baptist Church, Buffalo Center. Pastor Gary Bergman officiated.

Vera Bronleewe was organist for the service and Pastor Gary and Linda Bergman were vocalist. Congregational hymns were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace."

Honorary casket bearers were Debra Bulawski, Donnie Lamb, Jodi Nordskog, Tammy Solberg, Kelly Fredrickson, Bret Lamb and Dayne Lamb.

The casket was carried by Douglas Mayland, Brian Swearingen, Mike Swearingen, Jay Swearingen, Kevin Swearingen and Troy Swearingen.

Burial was in Harrison Township Cemetery , Swea City.

The daughter of Daniel and Sadie (Clark) Funderbruk, Margaret was born June 22, 1909, near Swea City.

She married Lucien M. Swearingen August 30, 1927, at Webster City. The couple farmed and moved to the Thompson area in 1957. In 2979 they retired from farming and purchased a home in Thompson.

Mrs. Swearingen is survived by two daughters, Donna Mayland and her husband Alfred of Rake; Sharon Lamb and her husband Jammie of Scarville; four sons, Dennis and wife LaVonne Swearingen of Kiester, Minn., James Swearingen of Glenville, Minn., Danny and his wife Kathy Swearingen of Thompson and Bill and his wife Diane Swearingen of Thompson; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Glennice Schweiger of Fairmont, Minn., and Daisy Gayle Funderbruk of Oakland, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lucien on October 30, 1987; and six brothers and sisters.

Willard Johnson

Willard A. Johnson, 72, of Austin, Minn., died November 23, at Austin Medical Center.

He was a native of Rake, born February 28, 1925. He graduated from high school and attended college prior to his marriage to Lois Hanna in 1951. They farmed near Frost until 1966 and then moved to a farm at Moscow, Minn. In 1971 he retired from farming and worked for Culligan and Lindsey Water Conditioning and the Mower County Shopper. He was a member of Moscow Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Judienne Tabor of Austin; one son, Shannon Johnson of Faribault; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and a special friend, Betty Holan of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

Harold L. Rockwell

Funeral service for Harold L. Rockwell, 82, was held Wednesday morning, November 26, 1997, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson.

Rev. Perry Fruhling officiated with Mary Ann Olsen as organist. Soloists were Rev. Fruhling who sang "Jesus Loves Me" and Amy Thorland who sang "Precious Lord Take My Hand." Congregational hymns were "What A Friend We Have in Jesus," "Rock of Ages" and "Amazing Grace."

Casket bearers were Mike Rockwell, Mark Rockwell, Brian Rockwell, Ryan Sorensen, Alan Amundson and Robert Hill.

Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson, with Winter Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Born April 24, 1915, at Leland to Karl and Grace (McMains) Rockwell, Harold was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson.

He married Eunice Larson in Mansfield, Mo., June 28, 1941, and farmed in the Thompson area during the 1950s. In later years he worked for the Horsewell Potato Farm, did farm work for Cliff Branstad and performed local carpentry work with contractor Ernest J. Helgren. In his retirement years he enjoyed woodworking, making various wooden toys and other small items.

Harold Leslie Rockwell died at his home Sunday, November 23, 1997.

His survivors include his wife Eunice of Thompson; five children, Patricia and her husband Clifton Hill of Thompson, Wendell and his wife Muriel Rockwell of Waunakee, Wis., Marceen and her husband John Sorenson of Minneapolis; Helen and her husband Don Amundson of Jordan, Minn., and Warren and his wife Marie Rockwell of Prairieville, Lo.; 12 grandchildren, Teresa Jurrens of Sibley, Jodi DeLay of Dallas, Tex., Debra Thorne of Lake Mills, Robert Hill of Moore, S. Car., Bradley Rockwell of Holt, Mich., Mark Rockwell, Mike Rockwell and Brian Rockwell of Waunakee, Wis., Diana Sorenson of Ames, Ryan Sorenson of Mankato, Minn., and Lisa and Alan Amundson of Jordan, Minn., six great-grandchildren; one sister, Lois Anderson of Mason City; one brother, Max Rockwell of Reynolds; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Walter Rockwell; and two sisters, Vera Martin and Faye Draper.

Eliza Sabin

Eliza M. Sabin, 81, of Manly died November 10, 1997, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her funeral service will be held today (Thursday), at 10:30 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery , Mason City.

Eliza was born January 14, 1916, in Rake to Arent and Petra (Holm) Rake. She received her education in the Rake school system. She married Arthur Sabin Feb. 28, 1935, in Rake. The couple farmed in the Emmons and Blue Earth areas and moved to Bricelyn in 1936 where they continued to farm until 1942 when they moved to Albert Lea, Minn., farming there until moving to Manly in 1946. Liza and her husband Art had been custodians at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church from 1975 until January of 1997.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Sarah Circle, quilting circle and Memorial Committee.

Survivors include her husband, Art Sabin of Manly; six children, Duane Sabin and his wife Sharon of Urbandale, Gloria Reindl and her husband Jack of Adair, David Sabin and his wife Gloria of Marshall, Minn., Mark Sabin and his wife linda of Clear lake and Dan Sabin and special friend Colleen Rhodes of Northville, Mich.; 13 grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bertha Nelsen and her husband Nels of Austin, Minn., and Alma Christiansen of Mason City and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, and one brother.

Henry Nath

Graveside service for Henry Walter nath Jr., age 85, of Mitchell, S. Dak., was held Saturday morning at Rose Hill Cemetery , Thompson, with military rites. Nath’s grandson, Jeff Nath, played "Taps."

Born January 12, 1912, in Boone to Henry and Kate (Lass) Nath, Sr., Henry served with the Coast Guard during World War II and served most of his time in the South Pacific.

He married Doris Brigston April 11, 1946, at Albert Lea, Minn. The couple farmed in the Leland area until his retirement in 1968 when he moved to Two Harbors, Minn. He lived there until 1992 when he moved to Mitchell.

Nath was a charter member of the Thompson VFW and received his 50-year certificate last year. He was a past trustee of the Winnebago Lutheran Church at Leland and was a current member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mitchell.

He died September 30 at the Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell.

Survivors include one daughter, Caren Minn of Sioux Falls, S. Dak., and one son, Dennis W. Nath, Sr., and his wife Mary of Mitchell; one sister, Marie Nath of Thompson; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; an infant daughter; one grandson; four brothers, two sisters; and a son-in-law.

Elwood Peterson

Former Thompson resident Elwood Peterson of Hudson, Mich., died October 4.

Peterson was a brother-in-law of Marie Peterson and a cousin of Vern Peterson.

His funeral service was held October 7 in Michigan.

Dorothy Iverson

Funeral service for Dorothy Iverson, 97, of Thompson,was Thursday, May 4, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Eden Township, north of Thompson, with the Rev. Dani Jo Ninke-Greaver officiating. Burial was in the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Dorothy Malinda Iverson, daughter of Andrew and Anna (Sime) Seim, was born June 11, 1902, in Eden Township, Winnebago County, Iowa. She was baptized as a child of God and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. She received her elementary education in the Eden Township District No. 6 school. After graduating from the Luther Academy in Albert Lea, Minn., Dorothy taught country school for 10 years in Minnesota.

She was united in marriage to Otto Iverson on June 9, 1932, at Trinity Lutheran Church. They lived on their farm in Eden Township for 41 years. Dorothy was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, active in Sunday School and Ladies Aid. In October of 1996, she moved to the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills. She passed away Monday (May 1, 2000) at the Care Center.

Survivors include her sister, Rachel Holland and her husband, Therald, of Kingman, Ariz.;

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto, in 1973; a sister, Ada Hauan and her husband, Alfred; brothers, Elmer Seim and his wife, Mabel, and Tilford Seim and his wife, Edna; a brother-in-law, Lawrence Iverson and his wife, Evelyn; and by Roger and Donna Chose.

Mary Carolyn Sill

Mary Carolyn Sill, 68, of Wabasha, Minn., died Monday at her home. Her death was due to cancer.

She was born August 27, 1931, north of Titonka, to Robert and Julia (Long) Bunkofske. She graduated from Titonka High School in 1948. She attended Waldorf and Luther Colleges and taught elementary schools in Thompson and Algona. After her marriage she taught at Woden until the birth of her first child.

She was united in Marriage to Floyd Earl Sill on July 24, 1953, at Ramsey Reformed Church, rural Titonka. The family lived in Burt and various localities in Minnesota before moving to Wabasha in 1975.

She is survived by her husband Floyd of Wabasha; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Darwin Hovey of New Hampton, Cynthia and Michael Mawdsley of Algona, Cathy Rudd of Eden Prairie, Minn., Cheryl Sill and friend Marty Peil of Zimmerman, Minn.; sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney Sill of Eden Prairie, Robert and Jill Sill of Wabasha, Richard and Holly Sill of Crystal, Minn., 14 grandchildren; and two nephews and one niece.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 29, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Wabasha. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Art Mitchell

Arthur Lamoreaux Mitchell, 86, died peacefully of natural causes on Sunday, April 2, 2000 at the Assisted Living Unit of Westminster at Lake Ridge in Lake Ridge, VA. He had been suffering from
Parkinson’s Disease and had been grieving the loss of his wife Edie just 9 days before.

Art was born February 9, 1914 in Titonka, Iowa. His birth name was Lamoreaux. At the age of 6 months, he was adopted by Charlie and Ida Rose Mitchell, a Methodist minister in northern Iowa. Art graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, IA with a BA, entered the U.S. Army and saw combat duty on Siapan during World War II.

His life-long career was with the Rural Electric Co-operative Association, first as a Power Use Advisor in Thompson, IA, then with the organization’s state staff in Des Moines, IA, and then moved to Alexandria, VA in the mid-60s to work with the National Rural Electric Co-operative Association in Washington, DC. Among his responsibities
was co-ordinating the annual NRECA Washington Youth Tour, which brought high school age youth in from all over the country for a week-long tour of the Federal government.

After his retirement in 1979, he remained active in sound recording projects, sang in the choir at Mt. Vernon Methodist Church and was a member of the Kiwanis Club. With the progression of his Parkinson’s Disease, he and his wife Edie moved to Westminster in Lake Ridge, VA in 1995.

Art was an accomplished photographer and was an expert on sound and sound recording. He had his own commercial recording studio and darkroom in his home. At Westminster, he raised African violets and was often found on his iMac computer. His love of computers began when he bought the original Mac in 1984, and he had been sending email to his grandchildren and working on his memoirs just weeks before his death.

He was married to Edie Mitchell, who had died just 9 days prior, on March 24, 2000. They would have celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary on April 5th. He is survived by Edie’s two children, who he adopted, Alan Mitchell and Sue Brown, five grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

A combined Memorial Service for both Art and Edie Mitchell will be held Saturday, April 8, 2000 at the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church in Alexandria, VA. Memorial gifts may be given to HomeCall Hospice Foundation, 3025 Haymaker Court, Suite 303, Fairfax, VA 22031.
