VIOLA, Ill. -- Dorothy R. Bruning, of Viola, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Lynncrest Manor, Aledo. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Family Funeral Services, Viola. Burial will be in Viola Cemetery . Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Dorothy Anderson was born May 23, 1921, in Bradford, the daughter of Elmer and Mary (Omanson) Anderson. She married Robert G. Bruning on April 8, 1939, in Davenport. She had been a waitress at the former DanDee Restaurant, Viola. She was a member of Viola United Methodist Church. She enjoyed camping, pen paling, crocheting, traveling and bingo. But most of all, she enjoyed and loved her family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Unit at Lynncrest Manor. Survivors include her husband, Robert G. Bruning, Viola; daughters and spouses, Rosie and Bernie Tholl, Chicago, Kathy and Denny Reible, Madison, Wis., and Debbie Britton, Polk City, Iowa; sons and spouses, Ron and Judy Bruning, Tinley Park, Dave and Lori Bruning, Matherville, Scott and Sue, Cottage Grove, Wis., and John K. and Melissa Bruning, Viola; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers.

Elda Willits
NEW BOSTON, Ill. -- Services for Elda Rosanna Willits, of New Boston, will be 10 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, New Boston. Burial will be in New Boston Cemetery with an Order of the Eastern Star Service at 7 p.m. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Sunday at Family Funeral Services, New Boston. Mrs. Willits died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. She worked at the Thatcher Glass Co., Muscatine, Iowa, retiring in 1976 after many years of service. Elda Hammond was born July 14, 1914, in New Windsor. She married William "Dutch" Willits in 1973. He died in 1991. Memorials may be made to New Boston Senior Citizens Group or New Boston Fire Department. Survivors include daughters, Cindi McLeod, Anchorage, Alaska, and Gwen Blevins, Stone Mountain, Ga.; a son, Bill Ellsworth, New Boston; three stepchildren; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Elanore Ludwig, Eureka; and a brother, Perry Hammond, Columbia, Miss.

Lorena Steines
CALAMUS, Iowa -- Services for Lorena M. Steines, of Calamus, will be 11 a.m. Monday at SS Philip & James Catholic Church, Grand Mound. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery , Grand Mound. Visitation is 2-7 p.m. Sunday at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound, with a scripture service at 7 p.m. Mrs. Steines died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Wheatland Manor. She had farmed with her husband. Lorena Schmidt was born Dec. 1, 1901, in Spragueville. She married William Steines in 1919 in Springbrook. He died in 1946. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. Survivors include daughters, Thelma Elsner, DeWitt, Doris Ihrig, Maquoketa, Junice Nelson, Atlanta, and Alice DeVoss, Calamus; sons, Ralph, Calamus, Loren, Alpha, Ill., and William, Dixon; 41 grandchildren; 98 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Loretta Feller, Preston.

Phillip Coné Sr.
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Services for Phillip B. Coné Sr., of Springfield, formerly of Kewanee, will be 2 p.m. Monday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee. Burial will be in Olivet Cemetery , Kewanee. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Coné died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at his home. He worked as a truck driver for Bekins Trucking. He was born April 14, 1951, in Kewanee. A memorial has been established and may be left at the funeral home. Survivors include sons, Mike, Mark C., Mark E., all of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Phillip Jr., Kewanee; three grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis Smith, Kewanee; a half-sister, Dorothy Brose, Galva; and a half-brother, Dale Peterson, Marquette, Wis.

Rhoda Borden
KEWANEE, Ill. -- Services for Rhoda N. Borden, of Kewanee, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Delehanty Funeral Home, Loves Park. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation is one hour prior to services Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Nelson died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Oakwood Health Care Center, Kewanee. Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee, is in charge of local arrangements. Rhoda Nelson was born Nov. 12, 1905, in Rockford. She married Joseph Borden in 1924 in Freeport. He died in 1974. Memorials may be made to Tabor Lutheran Church, Rockford, or the First Presbyterian Church, Kewanee. Survivors include daughters, Constance Herrick, Kewanee, and Linda Larsen, Des Moines; sons, Robert Borden, Plantation, Fla., and George Borden, Rockford; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Walter Brown
CAMANCHE, Iowa -- Services for Walter G. Brown, formerly of 110 21st St., will be noon at the Camanche Chapel of Snell-Zornig Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery with full graveside military rites accorded by Camanche Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Brown died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown. He worked as a carpenter for many years in the Clinton area, retiring in 1984. Mr. Brown was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Clinton. He married Phyllis Hansen in 1950 in Clinton. During World War II, he served in the Army. He was a Tec 5 with the 36th Division serving in the European Theater. Memorials may be made to the family. Survivors include his wife; sons, Richard, Columbia, S.C., Carl, Pensacola, Fla., and Russell, Tampico, Ill.; a stepson, Harold Hansen, Rock Falls, Ill.; a grandson; seven step-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Leonard, Camanche.

Harold Wallace
MUSCATNE, Iowa -- Harold L. Wallace, formerly of 1209 Kansas St., died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Muscatine Care Center. A private graveside service will be held at Muscatine Memorial Park. Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Wallace was born Sept. 2, 1906, in Washington. He married Velma Laschanzky Schwartz in 1965 in Chicago. She preceded him in death in 1983. He retired from Muscatine Power after 37 years of employment. Survivors include a special friend, Kim Goodwin and her husband, Randy, and their son, Ryan, all of Muscatine.

Dr. Paul McCormac
WATERLOO, Iowa -- Services for Dr. Paul C. McCormac, of Waterloo, formerly of Letts, will be 2 p.m. today at Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction. Burial will be in Letts Cemetery . Visitation is 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Dr. McCormac died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo. He served his internship in Cincinnati, where he practiced dentistry. He was drafted into the service during World War II, where he was promoted from the rank of captain to that of major in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. He was a dental surgeon at Gunter Field, Montgomery, Ala. While stationed in Montgomery, he studied plastic surgery. After his discharge, he practiced dentistry in Des Moines. He was born Jan. 17, 1913, on his parents' farm in rural Letts. A memorial fund has been established at Letts United Methodist Church in his memory. Survivors include a brother, Wayne, Midway, Ark.; a sister, Grace Lee, Muscatine; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Walter Brown

Ruth DeGraw
MONTICELLO, Iowa -- Services for Ruth M. Kleis DeGraw, of the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of Maquoketa, will be 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, Maquoketa. Burial will be in Pence Cemetery , rural Baldwin. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. today at Carson & Son Funeral Home, Maquoketa. Mrs. DeGraw died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the center. She was a teacher in Baldwin, and eventually taught high school English and French for 32 years, in Baldwin and Maquoketa. Ruth Hayden was born Aug. 26, 1917, in Creston. She married Harold Kleis in 1941 in Grant City, Mo. He died in 1978. She married Wilford DeGraw in 1982 in Maquoketa. He died in 1985. A Ruth M. Keis DeGraw Memorial Fund has been established. Survivors include a daughter, Beverly, Hayward, Wis.; stepdaughter, Ruth Honold, Grinell; son, Keith Kleis, Baldwin; a stepson, Rev. Alan DeGraw, Byron, Mich.; four grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Bernice Price, Marshalltown, and Esther Loynachan, Knoxville.

Raymond Marcus
OTTER CREEK, Iowa -- Services for Raymond Marcus, of Otter Creek, will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Otter Creek. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery , Otter Creek, with full military honors. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. today at Haylock O'Hara and Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, with a vigil service at 4 p.m. Mr. Marcus died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at St. Joseph's Unit, Mercy Health Center, Dubuque. He owned and operated Marcus Grocery, Maquoketa. He also co-owned Maquoketa Livestock Sales Co., and had farmed in Otter Creek since 1953. He was born Nov. 9, 1911, west of Otter Creek. He married Mary Lyons in 1944 in Dubuque. During World War II, he served in the Army in Europe. Survivors include his wife, Mary Marcus, Otter Creek; daughters, Jeri Edlund, Phoenix, and Karen Marcus, Belt, Montana; sons, Tom, of Andrew, Paul, Phoenix, and Wayne, Otter Creek; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Elda Hazer, Otter Creek, Elsie Watters, Maquoketa, and Donna Murr, Daytona Beach, Fla.; and a brother, Leroy, Otter Creek.

J. Howard Horst
SABULA, Iowa -- J. Howard Horst, of Sabula, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Eagle Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clinton, Iowa. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery , Sabula. There will be no visitation. Law-Jones Funeral Home, Sabula, is in charge of arrangements. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Curtis Co. and Champion Packaging, Clinton. He was born Dec. 3, 1914, in Miles. He married Lulu Smith in Clinton. She died in 1998. Survivors include daughters, Sharon Bradley, Lamont, Iowa, Ann Horst, Sabula, Sally Horst, Clinton, and Lori Whitehead, Morrison, Ill.; a son, Allen, Clinton; and 10 grandchildren.

Aaron Curboy Jr.
MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. -- Services for Aaron L. Curboy Jr., of Mount Carroll, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery , Mount Carroll. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Curboy died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at St. Anthony's Hospital, Rockford, after an auto accident. He was most recently employed by Quebecor Printing, Mount Carroll, and previously worked for Metform Corporation, Savanna. He was born Jan. 9, 1978, in Savanna. Survivors include his mother, Eugina Severs, Roscoe; his father, Aaron Curboy Sr., Mount Carroll; a sister, Brandi Severs, Roscoe; a brother, Danny Gilbert, Savanna; stepbrothers, Dustin Wilkinson, Freeport, and Gary Wilkinson, Mount Carroll; his paternal grandmother, Mary Spears, Clinton; his maternal grandmother, Shirley Hogges, Oregon; and his maternal grandfather, Kenneth Marth, Zigler.

Leo Moeller
HOUGHTON, Iowa -- Services for Leo G. Moeller, of Houghton, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church, Houghton. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery . Visitation is noon Monday at Link Funeral Home, West Point. A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with a Christian vigil service at 8 p.m. Mr. Moeller died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Henry County Health Center, Mount Pleasant. He was a retired farmer. He was born Oct. 9, 1906, in Pilot Grove. He married Marie Pollmiller in 1939 in Hought. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include his wife, Marie, West Point; daughters, Martha Moeller, West Point, and Jane Meyer, Davenport; sons, Carl, Fort Madison, Richard, Salem, and Ralph, Alexandria, Va.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Leonard, Houghton.

Edna Pellin
DAVENPORT -- Services for Edna R. Pellin, of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Monday at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary, Davenport. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery , Davenport. Visitation is 11 a.m. until time of services Monday at the mortuary. Mrs. Pellin died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at her home. She worked for Per Mar Security in Moline for eight years. Edna Frame was born Oct. 29, 1948, in Clinton, Mo. She married Edward Kelly. She later married Mike Pellin in 1981 in Davenport. Survivors include her mother, Beulah Clemmons, Davenport; and many nieces and nephews.

DAVENPORT -- Hans J. Gehrts, of Davenport, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. Services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Runge Mortuary Chapel, Davenport. Visitation is one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. He was employed by Boy Hanson and Advance Sign Co., retiring in 1973. He was born June 14, 1907, in Wesselburen, Germany. He married Elise Stoffers in 1935 in Cambridge, Ill. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Davenport. Survivors include his wife, Elise; daughters, Joan Pride, Montrose, Colo., and Sandy Kelley, Dallas; a son, Richard, Dundee, Ore.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Inge Witt, Wesselburen.

Gertrude Larvenz
GENESEO, Ill. -- Services for Gertrude E. Larvernz, of Geneseo, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ebenezer Church, rural Geneseo. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery . Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Myers Chapel, Geneseo. Mrs. Larvenz died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Hammond Henry Hospital, Geneseo. She farmed with her husband for many years. Gertrude Painter was born Dec. 2, 1907, in Loraine Township. She married Reuben Larvenz in 1935 in Edford Township. He died in 1980. Memorials may be made to the church. Survivors include sisters, Dorothy Van Herzeele, Elnora Melody and Lida Shoemaker, all of Atkinson, and Beulah Ackerman, Dunedin, Fla.; and brothers, William, John, Arthur, and Warren Painter, all of Geneseo, and Frank Painter, East Moline.

Lois G. Hoppe
MOLINE -- Lois G. Hoppe, of Moline, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. The Rev. Dr. Robert Miller, First Congregational Church, Moline, will officiate. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.. Lois Guyett was born Jan. 28, 1907, in Woodbine, Iowa, the daughter of John and Daisy (Griffith) Guyett, the eighth child in a large family of 12 children. Her childhood was spent on a 646-acre farm in western Iowa where she received her elementary education at a one-room rural school. She attended high school in Woodbine, Iowa. After graduation from high school she obtained a teacher's certificate and taught in one-room rural schools for three years before entering Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa, she graduated from Iowa State with a bachelor of science degree in home economics. Following graduation, she taught home economics in several Iowa high schools until 1937 when she married Manley Hoppe in Woodbine. The Hoppes made their home in Moline for the remainder of her lifetime, except for 3 1/2 years during World War II when they lived in Denver while Manley Hoppe served in the Army. Lois was an active homemaker, raising two daughters, Jean and Susan. She enjoyed her house plants, her flower garden and wild birds and developed considerable skill as an artist, painting in oils. But most of all she enjoyed traveling which, in spite of a physical handicap that plagued her throughout her many years, took the Hoppes by cruises and personal travel to almost all parts of the world. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church, Moline, a member of P.E.O. Chapter HB and a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Memorials may be made to the church or Arrowhead Ranch, Coal Valley. In addition to her husband, Lois leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Mike Steffenson, Davenport, and Susan and Jim Crookston, Atlanta; five grandchildren, Douglas Steffenson, Chicago, Dr. Sandra Tamkin, Lafayette, Calif., Laura Crookston and Jennifer Crookston, both of New York City, and Katy Crookston, Atlanta; one great-granddaughter, Hannah Steffenson, Chicago; and sisters, Grace Beamer, Bryan, Texas, and Dorothy Rinne, Lancaster, Calif. Lois will always be remembered as a loving wife, a devoted mother, a wonderful homemaker and a dear friend to all who knew her during her long and extremely active 92-year lifetime.
