Dorothy was born Aug. 12, 1922, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Lynn and Zella Carter. She attended Clear Lake High School.

Dorothy married Erwin "Moose" Hanson on Jan. 1, 1940. They began Hanson Marine of Clear Lake. Dorothy would help out by renting boats and making large meals for all the employees. Dorothy enjoyed living on the lake. She would take friends for boat rides and to sunbathe. Dorothy and Moose traveled with their sons on numerous camping trips. She had a love and respect for all animals and nature. Dorothy always had pets, even taming wild ones.

Dorothy was a good mother, a natural teacher. She enjoyed playing card games and dominoes with her sons and their friends. Dorothy had a fun-loving, competitive spirit. Her home was often a popular place for Jim and Jon's friends to have a meal, a laugh and a good helping of her advice!

After raising her sons, Dorothy moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. There, Dorothy married David Rogers. She became a director/counselor at her own group home for troubled boys. Dorothy made a difference in the lives of young people. Dorothy began painting in Colorado. She was a talented artist, receiving honors at various local art shows. She continued to paint and make handmade, beautiful cards for her family and friends.

Dorothy loved to bake and cook. She especially enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She always had special baked treats for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dorothy spent her retirement years in Clear Lake. However, Dorothy was never truly retired. She continued to be active, organizing Bible study groups and counseling friends and family. Dorothy had a strong, spiritual, Christian faith. She witnessed and shared her faith with all.

Dorothy was a strong, vibrant and independent woman. She was truly ahead of her time. She will be remembered for her quick wit and hearty laugh. Dorothy was very involved with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy lived a full, colorful life, as if she painted it herself. She always wanted to write a book describing her interesting experiences in life. Dorothy may not have a book to capture her life, but Dorothy has left a bookmark in our hearts and minds forever. Her final chapter would read, at peace in heaven. As Dorothy would say, "God is love and love is God."

Left to cherish her memory are: a sister, Marjorie Leek of Cranberry Township, Penn.; daughters-in-law, Julie Hanson of Brandon, S.D., and Carol Hanson of Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Holly Theisen and her husband, Richard, of LeMars, Heidi Hanson of Sioux Falls, S.D., James Hanson of Sioux Falls, Heather Wells of New York City, Robin Garrington and her husband, Brad, of Clear Lake, and Heather Hanson of Ankeny; eight great-grandchildren, Charley, Ivan, MicKie, Sydnee and Rylie Theisen of LeMars, Faith, Autumn and Carter Garrington of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lynn and Zella Carter; sons, James C. Hanson and Jon L. Hanson; and brothers, Fred and Larry Carter.
