Mary Alice Schulthies
February 13, 1917 - January 5, 2006

Mary Alice Schulthies, 88, of Burlington, died at 2:00 a.m. Thursday, January 5, 2006, at Great River Medical Center.

Born February 13, 1917 in Cedar Rapids, she was the daughter of William and Nancy Matsch Perrigo. On May 20, 1944 she married John Schulthies in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Burlington. He died November 25, 1962.

Mrs. Schulthies was a 1934 graduate of Burlington High School and on July 5, 1935 became a licensed beautician. She worked as a beautician most of her life and was the owner and operator of Mary’s Beauty Shoppe.

She was a member of Spring Grove United Methodist Church and Des Moines County Saddle Club. She enjoyed canning, gardening, sewing, quilting, cooking, baking, fishing, dancing, and watching birds – especially cardinals. Most of all she loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan (Robert) Johnson and Elaine (Dean) Fuller both of Burlington; one son, Ed (April) Schulthies of West Burlington; five grandchildren, Lisa Myers, John Johnson, Christy Villont, Jamie Fuller and Traci Fuller; four great grandchildren, Hannah Myers, Ben Myers, Haley Villont and Jackson Villont; one brother, Victor (Erdythe) White of Grinnell; and two sisters, Maxine (John) Slocum of Burlington and Murriel (Marvin) Cornick of Mount Pleasant.

Her husband and parents preceded her in death.

Visitation will be today from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. in Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The funeral for Mrs. Schulthies will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Steven Parker officiating. Burial will be in Augusta Cemetery.

Carl Schwerin
March 16, 1926 - October 6, 2006

-Graveside Memorial Funeral Service: Monday, October 9, 2006 10:00 AM in Aspen Grove Cemetery

-Inurnment: Aspen Grove Cemetery , Burlington, Iowa

Accoding to Mr.Schwerin's wishes his body was cremated.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Carl Schwerin, 80, of Burlington, died Friday, October 6, 2006 at his home.

Born March 16, 1926 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Carl Christ and Hazel Amelia Timmerman Schwerin. On January 22, 1944, he married Barbara Hall in Burlington.

Mr. Schwerin worked for Murray Iron Works for 20 years and was owner and operator of SSS Grey Iron Casting from 1963 to 1973 when he retired.

He was a WWII Army veteran and was a member of the V.F.W. Post 2369, the American Legion Post 37, and the B.P.O.E. of McAllen, Texas. He loved woodworking and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters; Peggy Shipley and her husband Otis of Carman, IL, and Sally Hand and her husband Bob of Burlington; five grandchildren, Dan Shipley, Doug Shipley and Wade Shipley all of West Burlington, Jolie Boich of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, and Chad Carter of Cedar Rapids, eleven great-grandchildren; one brother Donald Schwerin of Vero Beach, Florida; and a sister Barbara Fritz of Burlington.

His parents and one brother preceded him in death.

John Joseph Scully

November 15, 1940 - December 20, 2005

-Funeral Service: Friday, December 23, 2005 1:30 PM in SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church
-Interment: Sacred Heart Cemetery

John Joseph Scully, 65, of Oakville, died at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at his residence.

Born November 15, 1940 in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of William T. and Cecilia Cornick Scully. On December 20, 1968 he married Reva Sharp in Peoria, Illinois.

Mr. Scully was a 1959 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a member of SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church and a retired independent truck driver. He enjoyed watching western movies, gardening, the outdoors, and hunted for years along the river.

Survivors include his wife, Reva Scully of Oakville; son, John (Tina) Scully II of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughter, Shauna Scully of Burlington; four grandchildren, Treyton and Audrey and Marquel and Derion; two sisters, Virginia (Carl) Peek of Santa Maria, California and Rosemary Elliott of Washington; and two brothers, Ted M. (Dolores) Scully of Des Moines and Daniel T. (Judi) Scully of Lincoln, Nebraska.

His parents; two brothers, William L. and James Scully; and two sisters Teresa Grothe and JoAnne Beembloosom preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established.

Ruth Evelyn Seitz
September 2, 1934 - October 14, 2006

-Friends May Call: Wednesday, October 18th, from 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM in Lunning Chapel
-Family Visitation: Wednesday, October 18th, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM in Lunning Chapel.
-Funeral Service: Thursday, October 19th, 10:30 AM in Riverside Baptist Church.
Reverend Charles Stevens will officiate.
-Interment: Parsons Cemetery , rural Oakville, Iowa.
A memorial has been established.

Ruth Evelyn Seitz, 72, of Burlington, Iowa, died Saturday, October 14, 2006, at her home.

Born September 2, 1934 in Kingston, Iowa, she was the daughter of George R. and Laura Ada York Moser.

Mrs. Seitz operated and set brakes for J.I. Case for 19 years. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church and Women of the Moose. Her church and her family were very important to her.

Survivors include one daughter, Diana Nelson of Burlington; one son, Mark Decker of Albert Lea, Minnesota; several grandchildren; several great grandchildren; four brothers, Richard A. Moser of Palmer, Texas, Delbert Moser, James Moser and Jacob Moser all of Burlington; and two sisters, Georgia B. Hulett of Mediapolis and Alice Paschal of Roseville, Illinois.

Her parents, three husbands, one daughter, one son, three brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Friends may call from noon until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 18th, in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Seitz will be Thursday, October 19th, at 10:30 a.m. in Riverside Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Stevens officiating. Interment will be in Parsons Cemetery , rural Oakville.

A memorial has been established.

Manford Junior Settles
March 16, 1921 - May 19, 2006

-Family will receive Friends: Sunday, May 21st, 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM in Lunning Chapel
- Funeral Service: Monday, May 22nd, 1:30 PM in Lunning Chapel

The Rev. Kendall Adams will officiate.
-Graveside Funeral Service and Inurnment: Tuesday, May 23rd, 4:00 PM in Fairview Cemetery rural Ft. Madison
- Following the funeral service the body of Mr. Settles will be cremated

Manford Junior Settles, 85, of Burlington died Friday, May 19, 2006, at his home.

Born March 16, 1921 in Rushville, Illinois, he was the son of Manford and Mary Quinn Settles. On March 25, 1967 he married Connie Broadfield in Biggsville, Illinois. He was previously married to Marjorie Parker.

Mr. Settles worked at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and then at Winegard, retiring in 1984. He was of the Methodist faith. He played a variety of musical instruments and taught guitar. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Settles of Burlington; four daughters, LaDonna (Paul) Hanson of West Burlington, Teresa Hoeschen of Denver, Colorado, Kyla (Ariel) Burton of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Kerry (Mike) McCandless of West Burlington; three sons, Jim (Marie) Settles of Keosauqua, Rick (Karen) Settles of Marengo, and Chip Lee of Cedar Rapids; 19 grandchildren, Laura Mickey, Doni Mickey, Jennifer Mehaffy, Julia McCandless, Jacob McCandless, Joshua Mickey, Jesse Hanson, Lonnie Hanson, Dustin Hanson, Rebecca Hoeschen, Michael Hoeschen, Luke Coyle, Corbin Settles, Christian Settles, Tracy Settles Shaw, Sharee Settles, Jade Lowery, James Lowery, and Brandon Lee; and 10 great grandchildren.

His parents, daughter, granddaughter, grandson, sister, and two brothers preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, May 21st, in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Settles will be Monday, May 22nd, at 1:30 p.m. in Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Kendall Adams officiating. According to Mr. Settles’ wishes, his body will be cremated following the funeral service.

Graveside inurnment committal service will be Tuesday, May 23rd, at 4:00 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery , rural Fort Madison.

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Irl Edgar Shamp
December 13, 1932 - August 28, 2006

-Family Visitation: Thursday, August 31st, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church
-Funeral Service: Friday, September 1st, 10:00 AM in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The Pastor Erick Swanson will officiate.
-Interment: Aspen Grove Cemetery , Burlington, Iowa
Memorials have been established for the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and Camp Eastman Remodeling Projects at Nauvoo, Illinois.

Irl Edgar Shamp, 73, of Burlington, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 28, 2006, at Great River Medical Center.

Born December 13, 1932 in Fort Madison, he was the son of Lyle V. and Jessie E. Andrews Shamp. On December 14, 1958 he married Marilyn K. King in Revere, Missouri.

Mr. Shamp was a 1952 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a member of the 1951 Burlington High School State Championship football team. He was a Korean War Navy veteran serving from December of 1952 until December of 1956 and was a machinist mate serving on the USS Hector repair ship.

Mr. Shamp was a Burlington police officer and captain, serving for 24 years and retiring in 1985. He then worked as security captain for Pinkerton at J.I. Case and until he retired in 1994.

He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1957, Iowa State Policemen’s Association, Chiefs of Police Association, Keeper of the Wampum of the Honor Society of the Silver Tomahawk, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 150, Youngs Lake Campground in Kirkwood, Illinois, assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 45, member of Troop 3 and received the District Award of Merit in 1976. He was a die-hard Cubs fan.

Survivors include his wife of over 47 years, Marilyn Shamp of Burlington; three sons, Sean (Julie) Shamp of Burlington, Brad (Abbe) Shamp of Lantana, Florida and Rick (Kelly) Shamp of Burlington; foster son, Terry (Darlene) Miller of Roselle, Illinois; four grandchildren, Lucas, Justin and Mackahlan Shamp and Lacee Nordgren.

His parents preceded him in death.

William Wayne Sharkey
March 11, 1923 - August 11, 2006

-Friends May Call: Monday, August 14, 2006 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM in Lunning Chapel

-Family Visitation: Tuesday, August 15, 2006 9:30 AM until the time of service in Messiah Lutheran Church

-Funeral Service: Tuesday, August 15, 2006 11:00 AM in Messiah Lutheran Church
Rev. Donald Hoornstra will officiate

-Interment: Aspen Grove Cemetery
The Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52,
Hamilton Walters Marine Corps League and the AMVETS Post 29 will conduct Military Rites.
Memorials for Messiah Lutheran Church and Great River Hospice have been established.

William Wayne Sharkey, 83, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 6:15 PM Friday, August 11, 2006 at his residence.

Born March 11, 1923 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, he was the son of William A. and Ernestine Hester (Lyman) Sharkey. On July 8, 1945 he married Mary Elizabeth Swan in Burlington, Iowa.

Mr. Sharkey graduated from Burlington High School in 1941 and attended Burlington Junior College and Milwaukee State Teachers College. Mr. Sharkey was a US Army Air Corps Veteran, serving from 1942 to 1946, during which time he was a prisoner of War from 1944 to 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart, Prisoner of War Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was an Associate in Ministry for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Business Administrator at Messiah Lutheran Church of Burlington for thirty years, during the period of 1960 to 1990.

He was an Emeritus Member of the National Association of Church Business Administration, Messiah Lutheran Church of Burlington, former member of the Burlington Lions Club and former President of the Des Moines County Heart Association. He also served since its conception, as Treasurer of the Christian Action Committee of Burlington for many years.

Survivors include his wife Mary Elizabeth Sharkey of Burlington; daughter Susan G. (Bob) Hinz of Ann Arbor, Michigan; four grandchildren, Angela, Kathryn and Martin Sharkey and Richard Hinz; two great grandchildren; one half brother John Sharkey of Port Saint Lucie, Florida; nieces; and nephews.

His parents, son David A. Sharkey and one half brother preceded him in death.

A memorial for Messiah Lutheran Church and Great River Hospice has been established.
