Artis W. “A.J.” Lathan

Artis W. “A.J.” Lathan, Jr., age 57, of Storm Lake, Iowa died at his home on Sunday, July 3, 2005.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2005 at 10:30 am at the Church of Christ in Storm Lake, with Pastor Jack Barber officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery with military rites by AMVETS Post #66. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Friday, June 8, 2005 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Artis “A.J.” was born August 25, 1947 in McNary, Arizona to Artis Lathan, Sr. and Clementine Lathan. He was baptized in the Church of Christ in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A.J. graduated from Long Beach Poly High School in Long Beach, California in 1965. Following high school A.J. enlisted in the United States Navy on September 2, 1966 and served his country with honor until his release from active service in 1968. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star and a National Defense Service Medal. A.J. continued his service to his country in the Naval Reserves through November 1970. He then went back to school at Santa Monica, California City College, where he graduated in 1978 with a technical degree in computer science.

After coming to Iowa, A. J. was united in marriage to Alice Bannister Spooner on August 22, 2001 by Judge Gailey in his office. A. J. was employed by Tyson, Inc. as a boxmaker. He was currently a member of the Church of Christ in Storm Lake, where he was a deacon, a member of the Alta V.F. W. and AMVETS Post 66 in Storm Lake.

A.J. enjoyed fishing, playing video games and watching TV. He loved to play cards and dominoes. A.J. took joy in attending church and liked to spend time with his family after church eating, praying and visiting. Family was important to A.J. and he enjoyed traveling to see his family members living away from Storm Lake, and he loved to play with his granddaughter. A.J. died just a day and a half after his father-in-law, Charles Bannister passed away, reaching out his loving hand to join with Charles to walk through the gates of Heaven together.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Alice of Storm Lake; children: Rachel (Marky) Tellis of Atlanta, Georgia, Davion Lathan and Patrice Lathan, both in California; Charles Spooner and special friend, Jennifer Loriditch of Alta, Iowa, Jonathon Spooner of Storm Lake and Miranda (Nicholas) Winkleman of Storm Lake; his grandchildren: Joycelynn, Kiyona, Porcshé, Daquan, Tavion, Dante, and Dominique; brother Richard (Samantha) Lathan of Storm Lake; sister Susie Newkirk of Sacramento, California; mother-in-law Caroline Bannister of Storm Lake; brothers-in-law: Lloyd Bannister of Storm Lake and Dave (Shanda) Bannister of Storm Lake; sisters-in-law Jessie McCoy of Compton, California, Algeria Lathan of Los Angeles, California, Charlene (Jeffrey) Ulrich of Fonda, Iowa, Teresa Handy and special friend Micheal Noe of Waterloo, Iowa, and Melissa Bannister of Storm Lake; other family members Rena McCoy, Aletha McCoy, Lisa (David) Lathan, Chrissy, Michael and Mondrell, Shanda Handy, Jessica Handy, Brandi Handy, Ricky Handy, Justin Howard, Joshua Peters, Tara Peters, Autumn Ulrich and Whitney Bannister; and a host of other family and friends.

A. J. was preceded in death by his parents, Artis, Sr. and Clementine Lathan; his brothers: Nathanial, Seymour and Benjamin; brother-in-law Edwin L. Newkirk; and his father-in-law, Charles Bannister.

Darrell D. Porsch

Darrell D. Porsch, age 70, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, April 16, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of St. Mary in Storm Lake, with Father Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will be St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake anytime after 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2005, where a Legion of Mary Rosary will be recited at 3:00 pm and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Darrell was born on December 7, 1934 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Clara (Hull) Porsch. He attended Hawthorne Elementary School in Sioux City and graduated from Leeds High School in 1953.

On May 29, 1954, Darrell was united in marriage to Clara Marie Zweifel in Sioux City. They were blessed with three children: Mike, Cathy and Mark. Darrell was employed as a salesman for McKesson Drug Company for 40 years before his retirement in 1994. After he retired from McKesson, he was employed by Ressler Drug in Storm Lake until his death. Darrell was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Darrell treasured his family and the time he spent with them. He enjoyed sports of any kind, but especially those in which his grandchildren were participants.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly 51 years, Clara Marie of Storm Lake; his children: Mike and wife Lori Porsch of Storm Lake, Cathy and husband Mark Fordyce of Aurelia, Iowa, and Mark Porsch of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Alyssa, Nathan and Jacob Porsch, Joshua Fordyce and fiancé Nikki Harder, Bradley Fordyce and fiancé Molly Kunkel, and Tara Fordyce; Darrel’s mother, Clara Porsch of Sioux City; brother Tom and wife Bonnie Porsch of Sioux City; mother-in-law Margaret Zweifel of Storm Lake; nephew Randy Porsch and wife Lisa of Sioux City; as well as many other relatives and a host of friends.

Darrell was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Porsch; father-in-law, Jacob Zweifel; and nephew Bradley Porsch.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.

Donald H. Rupp

Donald H. Rupp, age 79, of Storm Lake, Iowa died on Friday, April 22, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 27, 2005 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors performed by AMVETS Post #66.

Visitation will be on Monday, April 26, 2005 from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. There will be a Legion of Mary Rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Donald H. Rupp was born on March 20, 1926 to Fred N. and Matilda (Wilberding) Rupp in Cherokee, Iowa. He lived with his family on a farm in the Cherokee area. He attended grade school through high school at Immaculate Conception in Cherokee and graduated in 1945. He was baptized on March 21, 1926 at the Maryhill Catholic Church.

During World War II, Donald served his country proudly in the United States Army.

On October 24, 1953, Donald was united in marriage to Ellen Bonita Connolly in Elk Point, South Dakota. This union was blessed with four children: Donita, Mary Alice, Donisue and Thomas.

Donald was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and assisted in the coordination of the St. Mary’s Bingo Program. In addition, Donald was a member of the AMVETS Post #66 and the past secretary/treasurer of Hy-Grade Union Local 191. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Hospice.

Over the years, Donald enjoyed many games of Bingo and solved many crossword puzzles. He also cherished the memories of his vacation to Ireland. Donald’s dedication and volunteerism will be greatly missed in the community.

Survivors include his children: Donita Jensen and husband Larry of Waterloo, Iowa, Donisue Rupp of Des Moines, Iowa and Thomas Rupp and wife Trina of Ankeny, Iowa; grandchildren: Cory Jensen of Arlington, Virginia, Casey Jensen of Waterloo, Iowa, Alex Jensen of Waterloo, Iowa, Nicholas Rupp of Ankeny, Iowa and Dillon Rupp of Ankeny, Iowa; brothers: Leroy Rupp and wife Bonnie of Cherokee, Iowa and Fred Rupp and wife Joan of Sioux City, Iowa; sisters: Irene Bortscheller and husband Claude of Marcus, Iowa, Marie Bortscheller of Remsen, Iowa, Shirley Sims and husband Rudy of Schaller, Iowa, Norma Clark of Cherokee, Iowa and Mary Louise O‘Leary and husband John of Storm Lake, Iowa; sister-in-law Margaret Rupp of Denison, Iowa; as well as other extended family and friends.

Preceding Donald in death were his parents Fred and Matilda Rupp; wife, Ellen Bonita “Bonnie” Rupp; daughter, Mary Alice Rupp; brothers: Walter and Leo Rupp; sisters and brothers-in-law Eleanor and Bill Dahlem and Laura and Tony Frangenberg; and brother-in-laws Ed Bortscheller and Keith Clark.

Kathelyn D. Harrington

Kathelyn D. “Kate” Harrington, age 84, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 16, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, with Reverend Jack Barber officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Friends may call Friday, July 15, 2005 from 4:00 til 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.

Kate was born October 7, 1920 in Lake Mills, Iowa to Nick and Irene (Nelson) Deneson. She was baptized in the Methodist Church in Lake Mills. She received her education at various different schools in Iowa.

On October 12, 1940, Kate was united in marriage to Edward Harrington in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with five children: Marida, Evelyn, Lance, Robert and Nicki.

Kate was a homemaker in addition to holding jobs outside the home as a waitress at the Ellis Café and Lake Café, and she also worked at Vilas and Company and Bil-Mar plants in Storm Lake. She enjoyed working in her garden and canning the harvest. She liked mowing her lawn, and took pleasure in watching the family pets, Chance, Josie and Willa, running and playing in the yard. Most of all, Kate loved her family and friends, and treasured the time she spent with them.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Evelyn Flowers of Storm Lake, Lance Harrington and wife Kathy of Storm Lake, Robert Harrington and wife Sharon of Rembrandt, Iowa and Nicki Harrington-Sheplear and husband Jim of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Robert Karr, Chris Cooper, Scott Davis, Angela Lance, Shane Brock, Mike Brock, Rodney Brock, Jason Flowers, Tony Bragg, Hank Harrington, Russell Harrington, Brenda Heilstedt, Tracy Harrington, Heather Harrington, Rich Harrington, Bret Harrington, Justin Harrington and Michele Harrington; great-grandchildren: Brandi, Jordan, Codi, Kenley, Felicity, Josh, Kayla, Chloe, Emma, Tristan, Dylan, Colton, Todd, Joey, Samantha, Alyssa, Taylor, Ashley, Tyler, Cheyenne, Jaimie, Jake, Tony and Alex; her brother, Paul Deneson and wife Bonnie of Johnston, Iowa; sisters: Chrisoula Fiers of Hilton Head, South Carolina, Ourania Bowen of Pennsicola, Florida, Anastasia Short of Norwalk, Iowa and Ruth Lee of Osceloa, Iowa; as well as many other relatives and a host of friends.

Kate was preceded in death by her parents, Nick and Irene Deneson; her husband, Edward; daughter Marida Davis-Karr; infant sons, John Andrew, Michael Lee and William Tyler; grandson Todd Davis; sister Eugenia Schaeffer, brother Nicholas Deneson; and son-in-law Joe Davis.

Donald K. Haahr

Donald K Haahr, 84, of Brownsville, Texas and formerly of Newell, Iowa, passed away October 11, 2006 at the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas.

A memorial service for Mr. Haahr is scheduled for Friday, October 20, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, with Reverend Barb Hansen officiating. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation.

Don was born in Newell on July 15, 1922 to Vernon and Anna Haahr. After graduating from Newell High School, he joined the Navy as a radio and radar specialist and for 4 1/2 years served his country during World War II in the South Pacific. Following his discharge from the service he married Betty Johnson, also a Newell native.

Don worked as an engineer at a number of radio and TV stations around the country, including Washington DC, Detroit and Cody, Wyoming. In the early 1950s, he and Betty returned to Iowa and settled in Ames where they adopted a son, Jon. In 1959, Don moved his family to Cedar Rapids, where he spent the rest of his career working for Collins Radio/Rockwell International as an electrical and design engineer.

In 1973, Betty passed away from cancer and two years later Don married Jessie Romp. He retired from Rockwell International in 1979 and moved with Jessie to Brownsville, Texas to retire. Don remained active in many circles in Brownsville. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge and the Full Gospel Men's Group.

He leaves his wife Jessie, son Jon and daughter-in-law Terry, stepdaughter Marilyn, his brother Leon and sister-in-law Ruby Haahr, and sister Verla and brother-in-law Bill Reading, as well as five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Don will be missed by his family and friends.

Mary Lou Freeman

State Representative Mary Lou Freeman, age 64, died unexpectedly at her home near Alta, Iowa on Monday, September 4, 2006.

Funeral services and a celebration of Mary Lou’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta, with Pastor Duane Olson officiating. Burial will be at a later date. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call anytime after 12:00 noon on Friday, September 8, 2006 at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where family will be present from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Mary Louise Hawkinson was born October 21, 1941 in Kandiyohi, Minnesota to James Martin and Anna Luella Sophia (Backlund) Hawkinson. She had one older brother, James Marvin, whom she looked up to and adored.

Mary Lou spent an idyllic childhood in Kandiyohi with her family and friends Barb, Nancy, Pat and Sonja. She was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church where she was baptized and confirmed in the Lord’s faith. She played organ for Sunday services through her college years, faithfully going home every weekend to play the old Swedish hymns that she so loved. Mary Lou attended Wittier Elementary in Kandiyohi and graduated high school in Willmar, Minnesota in 1959. She attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota and graduated in 1963 with a degree in Elementary Education.

Mary Lou was the mother of four children. She was a loving, caring mother who taught her children to be strong and level-headed, positive, generous, faithful and loving. She was very proud of her family and they were the most important part of her life. Her children, their spouses and grandchildren brought her great joy and she treasured their visits and calls. Her favorite gifts were handmade by her grandchildren.

Mary Lou spent her early adult years as a homemaker. The meals she prepared were always wonderful and made with loving hands. She could fix about any household problem, and she could make something old look beautiful again. Her home was always open to a friend and her kitchen table the setting for many heart-to-heart visits. Everyone was a friend to Mary Lou, who had a way of bringing out the very best in a person.

After her children were grown, Mary Lou touched many lives as a substitute teacher in the Storm Lake schools. She brought electricity alive as “Louie the Lightning Bug.” She continued to hear from past students and was so thrilled with their accomplishments.

In 1994, Mary Lou was elected to the Iowa Senate, a seat she held until 2002 when she ran successfully for the Iowa House, a seat she held until her death. Her career as an Iowa Legislator was a source of honor for Mary Lou and her family. The work she did to protect our natural resources was of great importance to her. She won numerous awards for the work she accomplished. Mary Lou was a quiet, positive leader, always looking out for the best way to find solutions for her state. At the time of her death, Mary Lou was Chair of the Veterans Affairs Committee and served on the Commerce, Human Resources and Natural Resources Committees.

In the past year, Mary Lou has been a survivor of breast cancer. Her positive, upbeat attitude has helped her, as well as her family and friends, as she underwent surgery and treatment for this disease. She was cancer-free at her death. A 65th birthday party was being planned by her family for October, to celebrate Mary Lou’s life.

Left to cherish her memory are her son Mark and wife Chris Freeman and their children, Erin, Tara, Megan and Dawson, of Lititz, Pennsylvania; daughter Sara and husband John Rekow and their children, Emily Louise and Anna Sophia, of Chaska, Minnesota; daughter Cary and husband Todd Friedrich and their sons, Ryan and Ross, of Alta; and daughter Maret Freeman and husband Edmund Ashley and their children, Peter Martin and Helen Elizabeth, of Portland, Maine; sister-in-law Helen Hawkinson of Kandiyohi, Minnesota; her nieces and nephews: Jim and Mary Hawkinson; Marcia and Gary Holt and their children Hannah, Jacob and Rebekah; Brad and Kris Hawkinson and their children Molly, Heidi and Charlie; and Bill Hawkinson; Swedish daughter, Kristina Helders; many other family members and a host of friends.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and her great-niece Jennifer Hawkinson.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established by the family.

Orval W. Wilbur

Orval W. Wilbur, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Monday, August 21, 2006 at his home.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, August 25, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church with Reverend Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post #6172 of Alta. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Thursday, August 24, 2006 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where there will be a Legion of Mary Rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a Parish Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. that same evening.

Orval Walter Wilbur was born July 12, 1917 in Webb, Iowa, the son of Horace and Flossie (Blair) Wilbur. He was baptized into the Catholic faith at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, where he was also confirmed. Orval received his education in the Linn Grove School, graduating from Linn Grove High School in 1934. On December 27, 1948, Orval was united in marriage to Delma Schuler at Texarkana, Arkansas. The couple was blessed with three children, Mary, Tom and Mike.

Orval was a devoted husband and father. He was a lifelong, faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, a member of Lake Creek Country Club near Storm Lake, and of the V.F.W. in Alta. Orval enjoyed bowling in the couples league and was an avid golfer. He also proudly served his country in the military during World War II.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Mary (Clyde) Wandrey of Schaller, Iowa; sons Tom (Anne) Wilbur of Orono, Minnesota; and Mike (Kathy) Wilbur of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Mike (Stephanie) Wandrey; Chris (Jona) Wandrey; Justin (Jackie) Wandrey; Lynn (Mike) Wattier; Dylan Wilbur; Steven (Stava) Wilbur; Mike (Megan) Wilbur; great-grandchildren: Jessica, Colt, Taylor, Caden, Jordan, Abigail, Jack, Ely; sister Jane (Bob) Kluth of Lincoln, Nebraska; extended family and a host of friends.

Orval was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Delma; two sisters, Helen and Elma; and his step-mother, Lyle Wilbur.

Thomas H. Eickhoff

Thomas H. Eickhoff, age 58, of Newell, Iowa died Monday, December 18, 2006 at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Funeral services for Mr. Eickhoff will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 21, 2006 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City, Iowa, with Father Lawrence McCarty officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will follow at the Newell Cemetery with full military rites presented by the Newell American Legion. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call Wednesday, December 20, 2006 from 5-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell, where a parish vigil service will be held at 7:45 p.m.

Thomas Harding Eickhoff, the son of Edgar and Betty (Hansen) Eickhoff, was born November 29, 1948 in Storm Lake, Iowa. Tom was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed April 7, 1963 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell. He was schooled in Newell before graduating from Alta High School in 1967. He also attended community college classes in Estherville, Iowa.

On February 7, 1970, Tom was united in marriage to LaDonna Richardson in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Laurens, Iowa. They were blessed with three children: Shane, Kristie and Jared.

Tom entered the United States Navy on March 31, 1970 and proudly served his country during the Vietnam war. During his service, Tom earned many awards, among them the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Award, and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on January 2, 1974.

After serving his country, Tom returned home to join his grandfather, Harding, and his father, Edgar, in the family business of general contracting. He remained active in the V.F.W. and American Legion. Tom donated his time as a volunteer driver for the Veteran Administration’s van. He enjoyed fishing, sightseeing, working in his flower garden, wood working and spending time with his four grandchildren.

Tom is survived by his wife, Donna, of Newell; his son, Shane Eickhoff and wife Laurie of Ankeny, and their two children, Thomas and Rachel; his daughter, Kristie Perrin and her husband, Luke, of Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, South Dakota, and their two children, Alexis and Teagan; his son, Jared Eickhoff and his wife, Briana, of Bloomington, Illinois; his mother, Betty, of Newell; his brother, Bill Eickhoff of Orange City, Iowa; as well as extended family and many friends.

Preceding Tom in death were his father, Edgar Eickhoff; his brother, Steve Eickhoff; and one sister, Becky Zoet.
