Dr. Thomas Walker
Funeral services for Dr. Thomas G. Walker of Riceville, were held at
2:00 p.m. Friday, December 2, at the First Congregational United Church
of Christ in Riceville. Rev. Hawf, Rev. Fagan and Rev. Walker officiated
with interment in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral
Home in Riceville handeled arrangement.
Thomas died Tuesday, November 29, 1994, at the Riceville
Community Rest Home at the age of 85.
Thomas G. Walker was born December 29, 1908, the eldest son of
six children born to Dr. Thomas S. Walker and Jessie Farnham Walker.
He graduated from Riceville High School in 1926, and the University of
Minnesota School of Medicine in 1932. While serving as an intern at the
Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, OR, he met and married
Lucille M. Shierry on March 4, 1933, in Springfield, OR.
Except for the war years, 1941 through 1946 when he was a Navy
Flight Surgeon, he practiced general medicine in the Riceville community
until retiring in 1979. During his active years, he was involved in many
civic activities. He served 25 years on the school board and was a
member of the Masonic Lodge and Shrine, American Legion and the
Riceville Town Council. His medical associations include the Iowa
Medical Society, University of Minnesota Alumni Association, and the
Mitchell County Medical Association.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille, of Riceville; one son, John
"Tim" Walker of Tierra Verde, FL; one daughter, Susan Baker of
Plymouth, MI; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers,
Robert Walker of Farmer's Branch, TX, and Doughlas Walker of Greene;
and two sisters, Jessie Eyestone of Riceville and Margaret McGrath of
Austin, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald.
Philip Carolan
Funeral services for Philip Carolan of Ridgeway were held at 11:00
a.m., Wednesday, November 30, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in
Bluffton with the Rev. Michael Fitzgerald officiating. Interment was
in the church Cemetery. French and Balik Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.
Philip, 83, died Sunday, November 27, 1994, at the Oneota
Riverview Care Facility in Decorah after a long illness.
Philip Carolan was born in Bluffton June 21, 1911, the son of
Philip Carolan and Elizabeth Whalen Carolan. He attended
rural country schools.
He worked as a farm hand for area farmers throughout his life.
Philip never married.
Surviving Philip is one brother, Fredrick Carolan, of Ridgeway.
Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister, Marie, and five
brothers, Thomas Carolan, John Carolan, Clement Carolan,
Leonard Carolan and Joseph Carolan.
Gregory E. Marshall
Gregory E. Marshall, 85, of rural Clear Lake, died Saturday,
May 14, 1994, at the Americana Care Center in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), May 18,
at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Clear Lake, with Msgr. Joseph Slepicka
officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. A scriptural
wake service was held Tuesday.
The family suggests memorials in his name.
He was born June 4, 1908 in Mason City, Iowa, the son of
Henry and Mayme (McGuiness) Marshall. He graduated from Clear Lake
High School in 1926 and took winter short courses in agriculture and
veterinary science from Iowa State University. He farmed north of
Clear Lake most of his life.

On April 9, 1929, he married Lauretta Gertrude Verbeckness
in Mason City. He spent many winters in Fulton, Texas, with his wife
before she died December 12, 1984.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling and was a lifetime
member of the National Rifle Association and Farm Bureau. He served
as president of the Farmers Co-op Dairy in Clear Lake and was a past
member of the Cerro Gordo County Planning and Zoning Board.
He was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Clear
Lake.
He is survived by two sons, James Gregory Marshall and his
wife Janice of Austin, Minn., and John Pat Marshall and his wife Candy
of Clear Lake; a daughter, Rita White and her husband Russell; 11
grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a grandson,
Todd White; a brother, Elan Lane Marshall; wife; two daughters,
Mary Gertrude Marshall and Marilyn Orr; and a daughter-in-law,
Linda Marshall.
Dorothy J. Kruggel
Mrs. Dorothy J. Kruggel, 75, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, May
14, 1994, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa,
following a brief illness with cancer.
She was cremated. Memorial services were held Tuesday, May
17, at the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with Pastor Charles
Williams and the Rev. Jerry Oakland of First United Methodist Church,
Mason City, Iowa, offich, Clear Lake, with Pastor Charles Williams
and Rev. Jerry Oakland of First United Methodist Church, Mason City,
Iowa, officiating. Interment was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason
City.
The family suggests memorials to Dorothy J. Kruggel Memorial
Fund.
Dorothy was born Aug. 15, 1918 in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter
of Chris William and Palma (Kluge) Hansen. She attended school in
Iowa and graduated from Davenport High School in 1935 and then graduated
from Browns Business College, Davenport, Iowa.

She moved to Mason City, Iowa, in 1937 and worked for the
Iowa Hardware Mutual Insurance Co. for several years. She moved to
Clear Lake in 1946 and married Raymond Kruggel on Feb. 12, 1946 in
the Clear Lake Christian Church, Clear Lake.
She was employed by the Clear Lake Medical Group and Dr.
Dankle for 22 years retiring Dec. 1, 1985.
She loved her family, music and cooking.
She was a member of First Congregational Church, Clear Lake,
Clear Lake Tina Rebekah Lodge #105, Todays Club, and Clear Lake Park
Chapter #35 Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors left to cherish her memory, three daughters,
Christine Wistey and her husband, David, Livingston, Montana,
Kathleen Whiteis and her husband, Lamont, Cahlhan, Colo.,
Mary Holmes and her husband, Chuck, Mason City, Iowa; eight
grandchildren, Mark Wistey, Chad Wistey, Eric Wistey,
Nathan Whiteis, Matthew Whiteis, Holly Holmes, Joshua Holmes,
and Ryley Holmes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1983;
and two infant brothers.
Ronald B. Smith
Mr. Ronald B. Smith, 62, of Clear Lake, died Thursday, May
12, 1994, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 16, 1994, at the First
Church of the Open Bible, Clear Lake, with the Pastor Will Hunsaker
officiating. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.
Military honors were by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

He was born Aug. 31, 1931 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of
John Smith and Daisy (nee) Avery Smith. He attended school in
Waterloo, Iowa. He served in the Army during the Korean War. In
1958 he moved to Clear Lake, and worked for Martin Marietta
Aggregates Inc.
He married Helen Otten on April 22, 1961, in Clear Lake.
He worked for The Andersen Company in Clear Lake, Henkel Construction,
Mason City, over 18 years, then worked for different pipeline companies
until 1992, when he had to retire due to his illness with cancer.
He loved to fish, hunt, do word puzzles and most of all go
and watch his step-grandchildren wrestle. He was a member of Clear
Lake V.F.W. and Local Union #177 AFL CIO, Des Moines, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Smith, Clear Lake; three
step-children, Judith Waters, West Des Moines, Iowa, Jacqueline Dybdahl
and her husband, Gary, Clinton, Minn., and Larry Otten and his wife,
Grace, Marshalltown, Iowa; three sisters, Charlotte Neider and her
husband, Harry, Cedar Rapids, Verna Parker and her husband, Lyle,
Waterloo, Iowa, and Sandy McCardy, Las Vegas, Nev.; three brothers,
Donald Smith and his wife, June, Lakeland, Fla., Joe Smith, Waterloo,
Iowa, and William Smith, Independence, Iowa; 12 step-grandchildren;
four step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers;
and three sisters.
Organist Pam Hughes accompanied soloist Nancie Deike.
Pallbearers were Matthew Otten, Georg Meier, Wayne Erland,
Jonathan Otten, Randall Bilharz, Bob Humberg.
Rothel Austin Walker
Rothel Austin Walker, 88, of Mediapolis, Iowa, died Tuesday,
May 10, in Mediapolis.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 12, at Hagele and
Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis. Burial was in Kossuth Cemetery at
Mediapolis.
He was born August 2, 1905 in Des Moines County, Iowa, the
son of William J. and Lievetta (Dean) Walker. He graduated from
Mediapolis High School in 1922 and Iowa State University with a
bachelor of science degree in horticulture in 1926.

He is survived by his wife, Florence, of Mediapolis; a daughter,
Dianne Woodard, of Clear Lake; a son, William Walker, Mediapolis;
two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
