KEOTA - Janet Ethel Hahn was born November 14, 1937 in Wapello County north of Agency, Iowa the daughter of Ralph and Ethel (Hills) Birkinbine. She attended Round Point School, graduated from Agency High School in 1955, and graduated from the Ottumwa Beauty Acadamy. On October 26, 1957 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Hahn in Keota. She has lived in the Keota community since 1957 where she was a homemaker and a wonderful grandmother. She was an excellent cook, gardener, an avid Hawkeye fan, and enjoyed camping. She was employed at Maplewood Manor as a nurses aide since 1986. Janet died on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at the Maplewood Manor in Keota of cancer at the age of 65 years. Janet is survived by a son Matthew Hahn and wife Janie of Keota; 2 daughters: Carla Morrison of Ottumwa and Lauralee Cude and husband Curtis of Portland, Oregon; 8 grandchildren: Noah, Gabriellle, Callie, Cara, and Isaiah Hahn; Cody Morrison, Waylon and Carson Cude; a sister Phyllis Utterback of Ottumwa; and 3 brothers: Alvin Birkinbine of Des Moines; James Birkinbine of Linwood, Pennsylvania and Ivan Birkinbine of Blue Grass. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth on July 27, 2001, an infant daughter Melissa Sue Hahn and a grandson, Elijah James Hahn. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, December 6, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz in charge of services. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be held from 4 - 8 P.M. on Thursday at the Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established for Washington County Hospice.

Vogel, Berniece

KEOTA - Berniece Vogel, age 101 of Keota, died Monday, December 2, 2002 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following a brief illness. Berniece was born September 23, 1901 in East Pleasant Plain, Iowa to John and Kathryn (Adrian) Peiffer. She received her education at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic School. On September 1, 1925 Berniece married Carl A. Vogel at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek Township. The couple made their home in Clear Creek Township until moving to Keota in 1950. Berniece was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and Reading Circle. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, gardening and spending time with family. Survivors include three sons: Charles and wife Bernice of Blairstown, Hubert and wife Marge of Casper, Wyoming and Herbert and wife Elizabeth of Hereford, Texas; 18 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; six great, great grandchildren and one half sister, Dorothy Horras of Keota. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Carl in 1989; two grandsons: John and Gregory Vogel; two brothers: Arnold and Adrian Peiffer; one half sister Agnes Horras and three half brothers: Joe, Leon and Ed Hammes. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 2002 at the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be at Ss. Peter and Paul cemetery in Clear Creek Township. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be an Altar and Rosary Society Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Ss. Peter and Paul cemetery or St. Mary Catholic Church. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Craven, Rosemary Irene

Rosemary Irene Craven, age 80, of Diamond Springs, CA and formerly North English, lA, died following a lengthy illness on Monday, January 13, 2002 at the EI Dorado Convalescent Hospital in Placerville, CA Funeral services will be held at 1 :00 P.M. on Monday, January 20, 2003 at the Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service in North English with Pastor Don Ridenour officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM Monday until Service time at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the South English cemetery . Irene was born on February 25, 1922 in North English, lA, a daughter of Wayne and Edith Miller Carter. She graduated from North English High School and had been a member of the North English Christian Church. On January 18, 1941 she was united in marriage to Wayne L. Craven in Cedar Rapids. Wayne served in the US military and they traveled and made their home around the United States, in Naples, Italy and in Hawaii to just name a few. He retired in 1967 and they have since made their home in California. Irene enjoyed her flowers, camping and traveling. She is survived by her husband Wayne of Diamond Springs, CA; a daughter Linda Craven of El Dorado, CA; a son Robert Craven of Shingle Springs, CA; and grandchildren Patricia Craven and Jesse Craven both of Shingle Springs, CA. Irene was preceded in death by her parents.

Voss, Owen W.
November 16, 1919 - April 11, 2003

Owen W. Voss was born on November 6, 1919 near South English, IA, a son of Ernest Theodore and Nellie Owen Voss. Owen Graduated from North English High School and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. On November 15, 1958 he was united in marriage to Maxine I. Kasper in Des Moines, IA. They have farmed at their present home since their marriage. Owen retired from farming in 1986. He was a member of the American Legion, a former post commander of the VFW, a member of the Keokuk Cattleman's Association and had served on the Knoll Ridge Country Club and Iowa County Farm Service boards. Owen died suddenly at his home near North English on Friday, April 11, 2003. He lived 83 years 5 months and 5 days. He is survived by his wife Maxine Voss of North English; 2 daughters: Patricia Voss of Cedar Rapids, IA and Jerilyn Voss of Dallas, TX; 3 sons: Robert Voss (Susan) of North English, IA, Thomas Voss (Nancy) of North English, IA and James Voss of Burlington, IA. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren; and 2 sisters: Mildred Cox of North English, IA and Bonnie Smith of Cedar Rapids, IA. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Private committal services will be held at a later date. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, April 14th from 4 pm until 8 pm.

Streets, William "Gabby"

SIGOURNEY - William “Gabby” Streets, age 84, of Sigourney, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at the V.A. Hospital in Des Moines following a brief illness. Bill was born September 22, 1918, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Charles and Mabel (Davenport) Streets. He grew up in the Maquoketa and Davenport areas and moved to Sigourney in 1934. On March 1, 1936 he married Julia Grimes in Rock Island, Illinois. Bill worked for Streets and Dunker Plumbing and Heating and Seibel Hardware before retiring in 1992. The Sigourney Public Schools and the Keokuk County Hospital were two of his clients. Bill served in the United States Army with the 106th Infantry during WWII and was a P.O.W. captured in the Battle of the Bulge. He served on the Sigourney Volunteer Fire Department for over 25 years, was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Lacey Kerr V.F.W. Post #2308 and the American Ex - Prisoners of War and enjoyed being with his family and hot air balloons. Survivors include one daughter: Connie Thompson and husband James of Des Moines; three sons: William, Jr. and wife Delores of Gladbrook, Jerry of Eugene, Oregon and Michael and wife Jan of Wichita, Kansas; 12 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and one sister: Helen R. Northrop of Hermiston, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Julia in 1996; son: Thomas; three brothers and one sister. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2003 at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. Interment will be at Pleasant Grove cemetery . Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2003 at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where the family will be present from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Sigourney Volunteer Fire Department or St. Mary Catholic Church. SOUTH AMANA - Donald Richard Burrus was born June 16, 1948 in Bible Grove, Missouri, the son of Richard and Norma Trent Burrus. He graduated from Scotland County Schools and North East Missouri State College in Kirksville, Missouri. Donald was united in marriage to Carol Ferguson on September 1, 1968 in Memphis, Missouri. He was involved in sales of agriculture related products for 35 years in Missouri, Illinois and Iowa. The family made their home in the Williamsburg area in 1984 and later moved to the South Amana area. He also owned and operated Burrus Mobile Home Moving for several years. Don was currently employed as a sales representative for Agro - Culture Liquid Fertilizer. He was a life member of the N.R.A., past Williamsburg City Council member, past president of the Iowa State Archery Association, a member of the Greensburg Masonic Lodge #414 A.F & A.M. in Greensburg, Missouri and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg. Don died Monday, April 7, 2003 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo, Iowa of an apparent heart attack at the age of 54 years. He is survived by his wife Carol of South Amana; three daughters: Amy Ward and husband John of Boone, Iowa, Tina of South Amana and Libby of Ames; three granddaughters: Taylor and Ashley Ward and Yves Campbell; a sister in law Deb Herring and husband Bill of Kingdom City, Missouri and several nieces and nephews, a host of very special aunts, uncles and cousins. Don was preceded in death by his parents. He will be remembered as a kind, caring person with an insatiable appetite for adventure. He loved spending time with family and friends, especially his children and grandchildren. Graveside Masonic Services will be Friday, April 11, 2003 at 11:00a.m. in the Greensburg cemetery in Greensburg, Missouri, by the Greensburg Masonic Lodge #414 A.F & A.M.. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 9, 2003 from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg, Iowa where the family will greet friends from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers memorial made be made to Greensburg Masonic Lodge, Williamsburg Public Library or Bible Grove School Preservation.

Peirce, Leona

Williamsburg - Leona Frances Peirce was born December 12, 1914 on the family farm near Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Rollo M. and Effie Grace Walter Peirce. She graduated from Williamsburg High School and received her BA fro the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Leona grew up in the Williamsburg community taught in rural Iowa County for 14 years, she also taught in Van Horne for 2 years and Clinton for 28 years, until returning to Williamsburg in 1981. Leona enjoyed being with children and reading. She was a member of the Fundamental Gospel Church in rural Marengo where she taught Sunday school for many years. Leona became a resident at the Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo in October of 1998. She died Friday, April 4, 2003 at the Rose Haven Nursing Home after a lingering illness at the age of 88 years. She is survived by two sisters: Ruth Stevens of Sumner and Florence Gorsh of Victor; a sister in law Lilly Peirce of Williamsburg and 16 nieces and nephews. Leona is preceded in death by her parents, a brother Leighton Peirce, a sister Vera Dietrich, a niece Shirley DeLancey and an infant niece Barbara Dietrich. A celebration of life service will be Monday, April 7, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. in the Fundamental Gospel Church in rural Marengo, Iowa. Rev. Richard Snyder will officiate. Burial will be in the Pilot Grove cemetery near Williamsburg. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 P.M. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorial are for the Fundamental Gospel Church or American Cancer Society.

Wemer, James A.

SIGOURNEY - James Arthur “Jim” Wemer, age 86, of Sigourney, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at his home following a lengthy illness. Jim was born May 22, 1916, in rural Gibson, Iowa, to Herman and Ruby (Lester) Wemer and graduated from Gibson High School. On February 22, 1936 he married Nina Roth at Gibson. The couple lived in the Gibson and Sigourney communities all their lives, where Jim owned a truck leasing business, farmed, raised livestock and worked in the automotive business until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Sigourney, the Session Board and the Kiwanis Club. Jim was an avid Cubs and Hawkeye fan and enjoyed fishing and his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife: Nina of Sigourney; one daughter: Karen deNeui and husband Ronald of Wellsburg; one son: Jerry Wemer and wife Fumi of Melbourne, Florida; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and one sister: Lena Boehm of Sigourney. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Richard C. Wemer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 7, 2003, at the United Presbyterian Church in Sigourney with Rev. Kate Stangl officiating. Burial will be at Sixteen cemetery near Thornburg. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. Memorials may be directed to the Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society or Hospice of Keokuk County. Gladys S. Keaough was born March 13, 1908 in Scandinavia, Wisconsin the daughter of Earnest and Carrie (Knutson) Engdahl. She graduated from High School and received a Degree in Teaching. In 1933 she was united in marriage to Eugene "Bud" Keaough in Superior Wisconsin. She lived in Scandinavia, WI. 2 years; South Superior, WI. 4 years; Lakeside, WI. 10 years; Superior WI. 52 years; Concord, CA. 20 years; and Wellman, IA from December 1995 to present. She worked as a teacher, a homemaker and a medical office worker. She was a member of the Lakeside Baptist Church in Wisconsin and the Sons of Norway in Superior, Wisconsin. Gladys died on Thursday, April 3, 2003 at the Parkview Manor in Wellman following a brief illness at the age of 95 years. Gladys is survived by a daughter - Carol Keaough of Oakland, California; a son Jerry Keaough of Wellman, Iowa; a granddaughter - Deborah Troyer of Wellman, Iowa; 2 grandsons - Jerry Keaough Jr. of Tiffin, Iowa; Garrett Keaough of Wellman, Iowa and 2 great grandchildren - Zachary and Hannah Troyer. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bud in February of 1969 and her brothers and sisters.

Kenneth O. Frese Sr. was born on September 5, 1962 in Clarinda, IA, a son of Leroy and Ruth Eberly. Following the divorce of his parents, Kenneth and his siblings were placed in the Lutheran Home Society in Fort Dodge, IA. When he was three years old, Kenneth was adopted by Ralph and Rosetta Frese of Homestead, IA. He attended the Lutheran Interparish School and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1981. On December 11, 1982 he was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Gott in Creston, IA. They have lived in the North English area since. He worked as salvager and mechanic. Kenneth was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Millersburg. One of Kenneth's greatest joys was reuniting with his brothers after losing contact with them when they were adopted into other families. Kenneth died following a sudden illness at Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo, IA on Tuesday April 1, 2003. He lived 40 years, 6 months and 27 days. He is survived by his wife Barbara of North English; three sons: Thomas, Kenneth Jr. and Robert all of North English; his adoptive parents Ralph & Rosetta Frese of Homestead, IA; his father Leroy Eberly and wife Helen of Villisca, IA; a sister Marnita Frese of Viola, IL; brothers Larry Eberly of Cherokee, IA, Rick Eberly of TX and John Eberly of North Liberty, IA. Also surviving are his mother - in - law Naomi Gott of North English, sisters - in - law Margaret Rodgers & Leslie Gott, and nephews Lance Gott & Daniel Frese. He was preceded in death by sisters Dixie & Denise Eberly. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, April 5, 2003 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English with Pastor Cory Rajek officiating. Burial will be in the South English cemetery , South English, IA. Visitation will be from 11 am Saturday until service time. A memorial fund has been established.

Williamsburg - Doris Anne Shaull was born April 7, 1926 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Ida Belle O’Ragan Feiereisen. She lived in the Cedar Rapids area until her marriage when she moved to the Iowa County area.Doris was united in marriage to Gerald David Shaull on February 2, 1953 in Lancaster, Missouri. She has worked for Troy Laundry & Dry Cleaning in Cedar Rapids for 25 years. She has also worked for the Colony Haus, Little Chicago, Middle America, Ox Yoke Bakery, Landmark, Subway and Williamsburg Foods. Doris was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Williamsburg, in which she sang in the choir. She also enjoyed knitting and doing crafts. She moved to Hillside Estates in 2001 and in 2002 moved into the Williamsburg Care Center. Doris died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the Williamsburg Care Center after an extended illness at the age of 76 years, 11 months and 25 days. She is survived by three sons: Robert Feiereisen and wife Shirley of Cedar Rapids, Chuck Shaull and wife Dena of Iowa City and Larry Shaull and wife Dede of Williamsburg. A daughter Delora Madoerin and husband Kevin of Williamsburg; a step daughter Jan Waddell and husband Larry of Marengo. 11 Grandchildren and a number of Great grandchildren. Two brothers: David and Michael Feierersen both of Cedar Rapids and two sisters: Winona Ongamach of Chicago, Illinois and Esther Gosnell of Cedar Rapids. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1982, two sisters: Margaret Pospishil and Ruth Puetz and four brothers: Henry, Ray, George and Robert Feiereisen. Celebration of life will be Saturday, April 5, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Williamsburg with Rev. Susen LaBlanc officiating. Burial will be in the Ohio cemetery near Ladora. Visitation will be Friday, April 4, 2003 from 5 to 8 pm at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for the Hospice of Compassion of Iowa County and S.H.A.R.E.

ENGLISH - Betty M. Kirkpatrick, age 68, of North English, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City from complications of heart surgery. Betty was born April 18, 1934, near Parnell to Willard M. and Verlenia O. (Tippie) Popham. She received her education in Parnell and North English Schools, graduating from North English High School. On June 21, 1953, she married Larry Kirkpatrick at the Methodist Church in North English. The couple made their home in the North English community. Betty worked in the housekeeping department at the University of Iowa for 12 years before retiring in 2002. She was a member of the North English United Methodist Church and attended the Champion Hill Church. Her hobbies included working in her flower garden and collecting antiques. Survivors include her husband: Larry of North English; three sons: Jeff and wife Karen of Cedar Rapids, Tom and wife Carol of Hills and Brad and wife Jeanette of Tipton; eight grandchildren: Molly and husband Josh, Justin, Josh, Levi, Chris, Stacey, Jack and Vanessa; two great grandchildren: Gracie and Samuel; her mother: Verlenia of North English; three brothers: Gene Popham of Idaho, James Popham of Peawaukee, Wisconsin and Terry Popham of Crescent City, Illinois and two sisters: Julie Gilbertson of La Porte City and Karen "Susie" Summers of Davenport. She was preceded in death by her father and daughter - in - law: Jody Kirkpatrick. Celebration of Life services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English with Rev. Marlene Janssen officiating. Interment will be at North English cemetery . Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. A memorial fund has been established.

Charles Franklin Hahn Jr. was born on March 16, 1915 near North English, IA, a son of Charles F. and Ottie Dubishar Hahn. He graduated from North English High School. Charles worked several years for Plank Feed Store, farmed and operated a livestock trucking business. He was married to Catherine Loretta Griffin Hall at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English in September 1964. Loretta died in September 1965. On October 12, 1968 he married Toni Babcock in Cedar Rapids. Charles loved his flowers and gardening. He was known for his dry sense of humor. He died following a sudden illness on Sunday March 30, 2003 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Charles lived 88 years and 14 days. He is survived by his wife Toni of Monticello, IA; two step daughters, Brenda Buscher of Swisher, IA and Doris Williams of Olin; a step son - in - law Lowell Harris of Atlantic, IA; 5 grandchildren: David Harris & wife Diane, Lori Stuart & husband Craig, Joel Harris & wife Rita, Kim Hepler & husband Terry, Chris Fulk & husband Scott; 13 great grandchildren: Wade, Natalie & Paige Harris, Derek, Bryan & Kevin Stuart, Mary & Evan Harris, Joshua & Alisha Hepler, Travis, Jared & Katelyn Fulk; and a great great grandchild Mychaela Stuart. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, wife Loretta, a daughter Joyce Hall Harris, a sister Opal Wade, brothers Virgil, Elvin, Orlo and Leland Hahn. Funeral services will be held at the Powell Funeral Home in North English at 1 pm on Wednesday, April 2, 2003. Pastor Don Ridenour will officiate. Burial will be in the North English cemetery . Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 pm to 7 pm on Tuesday, April 1st.
