Helen June Evans, age 91 years, died following a long illness on Thursday, July 24, 2003 at the English Valley Care Center in North English. Her body was cremated. There will be no services. Burial of her ashes will be in the South English cemetery . Helen is survived by nieces: Jean Chittick of Sigourney, IA, Elaine Hardin of Houston, TX; and nephews: Frank and Dale Schroeder both of Wellman, IA. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service of North English is in charge of arrangements. Helen June Evans was born on June 10, 1912 near Wellman, IA a daughter of Thomas Franklin and Mary Ann McClelland. She lived in the Wellman and South English communities until becoming a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in December 1991. Helen was a member of the South English Union Church. She was a homemaker and took care of her brothers William and Arthur. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Elmer, William & Arthur Evans and sister Marjorie Schroeder.

Rowe, Ernest (Gene)
June 05, 1932 - July 21, 2003

Williamsburg Dateline Ernest Eugene (Gene) Rowe was born on June 5, 1932 near Lancaster, MO, a son of Ramon & Winnifred Cooksey Rowe. He attended country school and graduated from Downing High School in Downing, MO in 1949. Ernest moved to Williamsburg in 1950 was united in marriage to Florine M. Iburg on December 5, 1952 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. He served in the US Army from 1952 to 1956 and they lived a short time in Tacoma, WA. They have since made their home in Williamsburg. Ernest worked for Ralph D. Jones for a number of years before going to the service, after service he worked at Amana Refrigeration, served as chief of police for the city of Williamsburg for a short time and worked 28 years for the Iowa Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797. He died following a lengthy illness at the home of his son in Williamsburg on Monday, July 21, 2003. He lived 71 years. Ernest is survived by his wife Florine Rowe of Williamsburg; 3 sons: Louis of Williamsburg, Douglas and wife Diane of Conroy and David and his significant other Christina Thomas of Williamsburg; 9grandchldren: Julie Maxfield and husband Chad, Aaron Rowe, Justin Rowe, Azariah Rowe, Jacob Rowe, Jared Rowe, Alisha Rowe, Sarah Thomas and Cody Thomas; 3 great grandchildren: Taylor Rowe, Wesley & Rylea Maxfield; a brother Charles William (Bill) Rowe of Ottumwa and a sister Shirley Lemon of Altoona, IA. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Jeral Rowe and a sister Sandra Rowe. Celebration of Life Service will be Thursday, July 24, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg, there will be a VFW Service at 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. Memorials are for Lutheran Interparish School or St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Schmidt, Noah
June 01, 1982 - July 20, 2003
Williamsburg - Noah Michael Schmidt of rural Williamsburg, was born June 1, 1982 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Richard Carl Schmidt II and Cynthia Van Dee. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 2001 and had completed his sophomore year at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Noah enjoyed going to concerts, art and attending school. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Noah died unexpectedly near Lake Geneva, Wisconsin on Sunday, July 20, 2003 at the age of 21 years. He is survived by his father and step mother Richard Carl Schmidt II and Mary Christy Schmidt of South English; mother Cindy Van Dee of Oxford; three sisters: Jesse Schmidt of Williamsburg, Cassie Schmidt of Oxford and Tilly Schmidt of South English; a step sister Kristie Kuesel and husband Cory; two step brothers: Austin Doughty and Josiah Doughty; three grandparents: R. Carl & Margaret Schmidt of Keswick and Marjorie Van Dee of Williamsburg; a nephew Justice. Noah was preceded in death by his grandfather Charles Van Dee and an uncle Kenneth Van Dee. A Celebration of Life Service will be Thursday, July 24, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Fr. David Hitch and Fr. David Wilkening will officiate. Burial will be in the Sordon cemetery near Keswick. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 P.M. on Wednesday at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. There will be a prayer service at 8:00 P.M.. Visitation will also be 1 hour before service on Thursday at the church in North English.

Hanson, Catherine
January 27, 1917 - July 18, 2003
Williamsburg - Catherine Hanson was born January 27, 1917 in Holbrook, Iowa, the daughter of Ed and Mabel Rock Hannon. She graduated from Parnell High School. Catherine taught country school at Green Township. Catherine was united in marriage to Clement Hanson June 5, 1940 in Holbrook. Having spent most of her life on the farm in the rural Williamsburg area until the last few years spending time at Pleasantview Home in Kalona and Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center in West Branch. Catherine work for the Williamsburg School System as a cook for over 20 years retiring in 1992. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Altar and Rosary Society in Holbrook and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell. She also taught religious education for many years. Catherine died Friday, July 18, 2003 at the Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center in West Branch after an brief illness at the age of 86 years. Survivors include her children: Rita Marine and husband Clifford of Wellman, Helen Marner and husband Marvin of Hills, Gerry Hanson and wife Vicki of Altoona, Fran Zuber and husband Larry of North Liberty, Jim Hanson and wife Peggy of Social Circle, Georgia, Tom Hanson and wife Ann of Manchester, Pat Hanson and wife Nancy of North Liberty and John Hanson and wife Janice of Iowa City; 21 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; a sister: Elizabeth O’Rourke of Parnell and a brother Ed Hannon of Castro Valley, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1982 and two brothers: Paul “Duke” Hannon and John “Pete” Hannon. Celebration of Life Service will be Monday, July 21, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell. Fr. David Hitch will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Michael Catholic cemetery in Holbrook. Visitation will be Sunday, July 20, 2003 from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg with a rosary at 7:00 P.M. Sunday. Memorial are for St. Michael’s cemetery or Friends of Old St. Michael’s.

Timothy Jay Redding was born on April 28, 1974 in Iowa City, the son of Ted and Doris Hershberger Redding. . He grew up in the Parnell area and has lived in Sully since 1992. He graduated from Iowa Mennonite School in 1992. He was a graduate of GMI in Engineering and Management in 1996. He was employed as an engineer at Vermeer Manufacturing in Pella, Iowa. Tim was a member of the Sully Community Church where he served on the deacon board and was the assistant secretary, taught adult Sunday School Class and taught mid - week Bible Study. He was the chairman of the Mission Board. He also worked with IFCA Central Iowa Youth in the Bible Quizzing Ministry and the National Quizzing Ministry. Tim enjoyed farming and the outdoors. Tim died on Tuesday, July 15, 2003 from injuries suffered in a car accident near Pella, Iowa at the age of 29. Tim is survived by his parents, Ted and Doris Redding of Parnell, Iowa and his Paternal Grandmother Bertha Redding of Pleasantville, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his Paternal Grandfather Lloyd Redding and his Maternal Grandparents Ora and Bertha Hershberger.
A memorial fund has been established for The Gideons, and Heaven and Home Hour.

Lester Lee Decker was born September 29, 1911 in Grayson County near Anneta, Kentucky the son of Frank and Leatha (Napper) Decker. He married Minnie Jones on November 10, 1935 and they farmed most of their life until moving to Salem, Iowa in 1966 where Lester worked at Metro Mail until his retirement. He enjoyed working outside and fishing until his health declined. He moved to the Kalona area in 1995. Lester died peacefully on Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at his home in rural Kalona following a lengthy illness at the age of 91 years. Lester is survived by his wife of 67 years, Minnie of Kalona; 3 children - Elaine Boshart and husband Robert of Kalona; Kenneth Decker and wife Meredith of Lee Summit, Missouri; Janice Ray of Des Moines; 7 grandchildren - Rick Boshart of Jackson, New Jersey; Teresa Boshart Yoder of Harrisonburg, Virginia; Lucinda Bockus of Blue Springs, Missouri; Lisa Boshart of Seoul, Korea; Shawn Decker of Des Moines; Angela Bernstein of Burke, Virginia; Marc Ray of Perry; 12 great grandchildren; 2 sisters - Mabel Cook of New Albany, Indiana; Elta Green of Paducah, Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister Jewell Hayse.
A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice.

Hazel Huber Wood was born June 24, 1907 in rural Keota, Iowa the daughter of Harry E. and Alma (Henderson) Huber. She attended rural Maple Grove School in Seventy - Six Township and graduated from Washington High School in 1927. On February 20, 1929 she was united in marriage to Melvin Lyle. He died on January 25, 1937. Hazel later married Clayton Wood on January 11, 1945 in Reno, Nevada. He preceded her in death on September 10, 1972. Hazel worked at Wellman Produce and then the VA Hospital for a number of years. She lived in Washington county area all her life except from 1930 - 1937 when she lived in Colorado. She was a resident of Parkview Manor in Wellman for the past 4 years and 4 months. She was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church. Hazel died on Saturday June 28, 2003 following a long illness at the age of 96 years and 6 days. Hazel is survived by her daughter Darlene (Lyle) Miller and husband George of Wellman, 2 granddaughters - Barbara Kauffman and husband John of Wellman, Betty Stumpf and husband Randy of Joetown; 5 great grandchildren - Kim Stumpf, Tonia Johnston and husband Steve, Brandon Kauffman, Brent Kauffman, Angie Kauffman; and 3 great great grandchildren - Cailee, Ashlin and Dakotah Stumpf. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, a brother David Huber; and 2 sisters Myrtle Redlinger and Loramae Finley.
A General Memorial fund has been established.

Sondag, Marjorie P.
August 31, 1916 - December 04, 2003
Keota, Iowa
KEOTA - Marjorie P. Sondag was born Thursday, August 31, 1916 near Keota, Iowa the daughter of Joseph and Ann Marie (Palm) Trier. She graduated from Keota High School. On August 31, 1937 she was united in marriage to Ralph George Sondag at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. She has lived here in the Keota community all of her life where she was a homemaker and worked at Maplewood Manor as a Nurse’s Aid. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society, and St. Mary Reading Circle. She also was an active volunteer at Maplewood Manor. She enjoyed playing cards, but her greatest joy was her family. Marjorie died on Thursday, December 4, 2003 at Washington County Hospital in Washington following a brief illness at the age of 87 years. Marjorie is survived by 8 children - Margaret Coffman and husband David of Davenport; George Sondag and wife Barb of Iowa City; David Sondag and wife Mary of Iowa City; Larry Sondag of Keota; Paul Sondag and wife Vicki of Williamsburg; Barbara Davisson and husband Ray of Davenport; Carol Duwa of Kalona; Dan Sondag and wife Susie of Grinnell; 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter - Rose Marie Sondag; a son - Rick Sondag; a grandson - Thomas David Sondag; and a brother - Raymond Trier. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, December 6, 2003 at the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. Rev. Marty Goetz will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Mary cemetery . Visitation will be held from 3 - 8 p.m. on Friday at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota where an Altar and Rosary Society Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. and a Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. A Memorial Fund has been established for Hospice.

Kristi Lynn Harris, age 52, of North English and formerly of Urbandale died following a short illness on Thursday, December 4, 2003 at the English Valley Care Center in North English. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM at the North English Christian Church on Sunday, December 7, 2003 with Pastor Don Ridenour officiating. Burial will be in the North English cemetery . Visitation will be held at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation service in North English on Saturday from 4 PM to 8 PM.. She is survived by sons Bradley Vetter of Edina, MN and Scott Vetter of North Liberty, IA; her parents Jerry and Mary Lou Harris of North English; a sister Kathy (Robert) Misel of Grimes, IA; brothers Terry (Mary Kay) Harris of Lisbon, IA and Tony (Pat) Harris of North English. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Quincy and Nona Lockridge and Wayne & Helen Harris. Kristi Lynn Harris was born on September 21, 1951 in Sigourney, IA, a daughter of Jerry and Mary Lou Lockridge Harris. She grew up in the North English community and graduated from English Valleys High School in 1969. Kristi graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls in 1973 and then received paralegal training in Minneapolis, MN. She worked a short time in Cedar Rapids as a social worker before moving to Eden Prairie, MN. Kristi was married in May 1973 to Galen Vetter at the North English Christian Church. They were later divorced. Kristi has worked the past 8 years as a legal secretary at the Gaudineer, Comito & George Law Firm in Des Moines. She had been living in Urbandale, IA until moving to North English in October. A memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society.

GORSCH, LORNIE E.
October 18, 1926 - December 02, 2003
MILLERSBURG / MARENGO
Lornie E. Gorsch was born on October 18, 1926 near Millersburg, IA, a son of Fred (Fritz) and Annie Grimm Gorsch. He attended Dayton Center and Millersburg schools. He was baptized in the Community Church near Millersburg. Lornie served with the US Army in Korea from 1945 to 1946. On March 15, 1948, he was united in marriage to Laurene E. Dhondt at the Lutheran Church Parsonage in Williamsburg, IA. They made their home in Millersburg. Lornie worked for the Iowa County Secondary Road Department for 30 years, retiring in 1989. He then worked for Marengo Ready Mix for a couple years. Lornie was a regular card player at the Home Town Café in Millersburg. In 1998 they moved to Williamsburg and then to Marengo in 2001. Lornie died following a sudden illness at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City on Tuesday, December 2, 2003. He is survived by is wife Laurene E. Gorsch of Marengo, IA; a daughter Barb Adix and husband Dan of Marengo; sons Donald Gorsch and wife Phyllis of Marion, IA and Bill McFadden and wife Mary Lou of Cedar Rapids, IA; 6 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; his step mother Blanche Gorsch of Cedar Rapids; 6 half brothers and sisters. Lornie was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Catherine, grandson Brian Gorsch and brothers Dwight and Edward Gorsch. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Thursday, December 4, 2003 at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Pastor Edwin Jordan will officiate. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 3rd from 4 pm to 8 pm. Burial with military honors will be in Community cemetery , rural Deep River, IA.

Elizabeth M. Von Ahsen was born September 23, 1926 in Pilot Township the daughter of Carl and Jane (Pierce) Durr. She attended Pilot Township rural school and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1944. On August 10, 1944 she was united in marriage to Orville H. E. Von Ahsen at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. She lived all of her life in the Williamsburg community. She was a homemaker, a cook at the Immanuel Lutheran School, and also worked for the Amana Bakery and the Landmark Restaurant. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Women’s Guild and St. Paul Lutheran Choir. Elizabeth went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at the Williamsburg Care Center in Williamsburg from complications of Alzheimer’s at the age of 77 years. Elizabeth is survived by 3 children - Janice Curl and husband Roger of Marion; Gordon Von Ahsen and wife Kathleen of Harlan; Marcia Baack and husband Jim of Williambsurg; 8 granddaughters - Lynn Gahring and husband John; Amy Harrison and husband Doug; Rose and Emmalyn Baack; Kara Jane Curl; Kari Chleborad and husband Chris; Jackie Von Ahsen; Deborah Christensen and husband James; 4 grandsons - Kevin Curl; Christopher, Nicholas, and John Von Ahsen; 5 great grandchildren - Logan and Grayson Gahring; Tucker, Garrett and Samantha Harrison; a brother - Charles Durr and wife Donna of Branson, Missouri; a sister - in - law Lois Durr of Williamsburg; and a number of nieces and nephews. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Orville, and a brother Robert Durr.
A memorial fund has been established for the St. Paul Lutheran Church and Lutheran Interparish School.
