Donald C. `Jug' Needham formerly of Maple Park
The life of Donald C. `Jug' Needham, 66, of DeKalb, will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at First United Methodist Church, Fourth and Oak Streets, DeKalb. The Rev. Mary Gay McKinney will officiate.
Born Feb. 22, 1933, in DeKalb, to Frederick Benton and Blanche (nee Larson) Needham, he passed away Saturday, May 29, 1999, at Kishwaukee Hospital. Interment will be in Ohio Grove Cemetery, Barber Green Road, DeKalb, following the services.
Nicknamed `Jug' early in his life by his father, Donald graduated from Maple Park High School and shortly thereafter began work at the Acme Bronze foundry in Maple Park. Married to Joan Fritsch on Sept. 23, 1956 at Big Rock Baptist Church, the couple made their home in Maple Park for 38 years before moving to their present home in DeKalb. Donald also worked for Northern Illinois Gas Company for 15 years, untilhis retirement in the early 1970s, and was a member of First United Methodist Church in DeKalb, the Moose Lodge ofAurora and the DeKalb Masonic Lodge.
An innate wanderlust inspired Jug to take his family on Sunday drives that often stretched for hundreds of miles through Illinois and Wisconsin. Fishing was also a passion, and many are his children's memories of fishing with `Dad' or `Grandpa. ' Jug and Joan also enjoyed antiquing as they traveled the area, and Jug became a skilled craftsman at furniture restoration.
Jug was a consummate storyteller and his sense of humor was legendary. Indeed it was his sense of humor that made life bearable as he endured many hospitalizations through the years which eventually left him in chronic pain. Jug lived the Golden Rule and his acts of kindness were as legendary as his humor.
Those who lived alone could always find a `fix-it' friend in him and lucky was the child with whom he paused to play checkers or spin a yarn. He loved babysitting his grandchildren and from the day of their birth sported them around the neighborhood, bragging and grinning ear to ear.
After a stroke in 1992, Jug recovered with the loving support of his family, his eyes never losing their laughter. On May 23, 1999, however, he suffered another stroke that left him comatose for six days. As his family and friends came to the hospital to say goodbye, they remembered the laughter through their tears and felt that they had not just been `touched by an angel, ' but`tickled by a saint. ' In addition to his wife, Joan, he is survived by his children, Pamela Jo (James) Volkert ofRochelle and Peggy Ann (Jeffrey) Yagen of Maple Park; grandchildren, Samuel James Volkert and Margaret Joan Yagen of Maple Park; stepgrandchildren, Kimberly (Todd) Stecker and Stephanie (Eric) Kersten; great-stepgrandson, Noah Christopher Stecker; and siblings, William (Virginia) Needham of Maple Park, Ma
