Emma Brown
DE SOTO -- Emma Brown, 88, of De Soto, passed away at 12:02 p. m., Sunday, December 30, 2001 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Murphysboro. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m., Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002 at Meredith Funeral Home with Revs. Chris Hottensen and James Wright officiating. Interment will be held in De Soto Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, De Soto, or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home. Emma was born Jan. 23, 1913, in Marion to Charles and Ella (Watson) Cagle. She married Floyd Phillips on Sept. 11, 1932, in Marion. He preceded her in death on May 27, 1978. Then she married Oscar Brown on Oct. 5, 1984, at Energy. He preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 1997. Four brothers and four sisters also preceded her in death. Survivors include a sister, Myrtle Jones of Las Vegas, Nev.; many nieces and nephews including Karla Jo Yates of Energy; and several great nieces and great nephews. Mrs. Brown was a member of First Baptist Church, De Soto, the Anna Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Herrin, where she was a member for over 50 years. Emma had worked as an licensed practical nurse at Doctors Hospital and Holden Hospital in Carbondale for many years.

Duane Webster
MURPHYSBORO -- Duane Webster, 83, of 8822 Highway 127, Murphysboro, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital. Memorial services are pending at the Crawshaw Funeral Home.

Tameka Purdiman
MOUND CITY -- Tameka L. Purdiman, 23, of Mound City, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Arrangements are pending at the Massie Funeral Home in Cairo.

Everett Jeter
MARION -- Everett E. Jeter, 85,died at 11:27 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at his home. Arrangements are incomplete at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home.

Joe Tonso
HERRIN -- Joe Tonso, 97, died at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in his home. Arrangements are incomplete at Johnson Hughes Funeral Home.

Steven L. 'Rainman' Rains
MURPHYSBORO -- Steven L. "Rainman" Rains, 47, died at 3:55 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Pettett Funeral Home, with burial in Walker Hill Cemetery in Grand Tower. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Rains was a logger.
He was born Feb. 28, 1954, in Granite City to Earl and Wilma (Dotson) Rains.
He married Wanda Baumgartner. She survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Jesse L. Rains of Pomona, and Joshua S. and Zackary E. Rains, both of Payneville, Ky.; one daughter, Dalton, of Murphysboro; one grandson, Codylee Earl Rains of Jasper, Mo.; his parents, of Murphysboro; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Daniel Rains of Cobden, Kenneth and Brenda Rains of Jonesboro and Tim and Micki Rains of Christopher; one sister and brother-in-law, Teri and Mike Bell of Pomona; three nieces; four nephews; and one great-niece.
His grandparents preceded him in death.

Charles Wittenborn
MARISSA -- Charles Roger Wittenborn, 78, died at 6:35 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the First United Methodist Church in Sparta, with the Rev. Tom Corum officiating. Burial will be in Caledonia Cemetery in Sparta. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Friday at McDaniel Funeral Home in Sparta, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Marissa Senior Citizens Center.

Lewis Evers
BELKNAP -- Lewis "Cub" Evers, 59, died at 11:45 am. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today in Wilson Funeral Home in Karnak, with the Rev. Raymond Davis officiating. Burial will be later. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lee Jones
MARION -- Lee Jones, 69, died at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002.
Arrangements are incomplete at Meredith-Blue Funeral Home.

Juanita Nixon
MURPHYSBORO -- Juanita Howard Nixon, 79, died at 2:08 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital.
Arrangements are incomplete at Jackson Funeral Home in Carbondale.

Carol Stevenson
OKAWVILLE -- Carol Stevenson, 71, died at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in Memorial Hospital in Belleville.
Arrangements are incomplete at Styninger-Krupp Funeral Home in Nashville.

Kameron Allison
CARBONDALE -- Kameron Leander Allison, 17, died at 10:45 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Arrangements are incomplete at Jackson Funeral Home in Carbondale.

Rosemary Green
CHESTER -- Rosemary Green, 85, died at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2001, in Three Springs Lodge.
Arrangements are incomplete at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home.

Bill Thornton
GOREVILLE -- E. W. "Bill" Thornton, 90, of Winter Haven, Fla., formerly of Goreville, died at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, in Good Shepherd Hospice Hospital in Auburndale, Fla.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Cypress Masonic Cemetery, with the Rev. Jeffery Bealmear officiating.
Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna is in charge of arrangements.

Aleen Halstead
MARION -- Aleen G. Halstead, 88, died at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in Parkway Manor.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, with High Priest Gordon Lambert and Glenn Webb officiating. Burial will be in Webb Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Marion Community of Christ Church (RLDS).

Irene Mast
OPDYKE-- Irene C. Mast, 7-day-old daughter of Crist Mast and Rebecca Nissley, died at 10:45 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at home.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday in the home of Mahlon Mast, with burial in in Goshen Trail Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight at the home of Andy and Barbara Mast.
Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her parents, of Opdyke; two sisters, Rosa Mast and Sarah Ann Mast, both of Opdyke; grandparents, Andy and Barbara Mast of Belle Rive and Amos and Lena Nissley of Lewisburg, Ky; and great-grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Virginia Zivaly
Virginia Zivaly, 85, of 304 S. Pine Street, Zeigler, died at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 at the Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin. Virginia was born July 18, 1918, in Nokomis to Oscar and Lola (Miner) Gray. She married Thomas Zivaly April 24, 1935, in Pinckneyville. He survives in Zeigler. Other survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Tonny Mae and Bob Stacy of Abingdon, Va., Donna Kay and Jim Adkins of Lake of Egypt; five grandchildren, Doug Adkins and his wife, Sharon, of Mokena, Tammy Dalbey and her husband, Rick, of Downers Grove, Tom Adkins and his wife Jenny of Tinley Park, Jennifer Stacy of Schaumburg, Jon Stacy and his wife, Kerry, of Morristown, Tenn.; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Raymond Gene and Delores Gray of Indianapolis, Ind. Her parents and two brothers, Bill and Jack Gray, preceded her in death. Virginia was a charter member of the Zeigler First Christian Church and a homemaker. Funeral services for Mrs. Zivaly will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at First Christian Church in Zeigler, with Brother Larry Hallman officiating. Burial will be at Zeigler Cemetery. Visiting hours are from 5 until 9 p.m. today at Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church until the hour of the services. Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Zivaly may be made to the Zeigler First Christian Church.
