WEST FRANKFORT -- Clara Rumsey, 71, of West Frankfort, passed away at 9:35 p. m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, in the West Side Care Center in West Frankfort. She was born on July 11, 1933, in West Frankfort, to Everet Lee Walton and Floy (Null) Walton. She married Floyd Rumsey, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1996. Survivors include her son, Richard Rumsey of Mount Vernon; her daughter, Debbie Rumsey of Anna; two grandsons, Daniel Rumsey and David Rumsey, both of Kenner, La.; two sisters, Judy Michael of Jacksonville, Fla. , and Phyllis Duhamel of Chicago; and three brothers, Dennis Walton of West Frankfort, Larry Walton of Arizona and Kenneth Walton of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd; an infant son and infant daughter; one granddaughter, Amy Rumsey, in 1995; two sisters; and one brother. She was a member of the Heights Church of God in West Frankfort. Clara formerly worked for Wal-Mart in Benton and McCord's Market in West Frankfort. Services will be at 1 p. m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, in Denning Cemetery in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Joe Daniels officiating. There will be no visitation. Friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home.

ULLIN -- Nancy B. Richardson, 86, of rural Ullin, died at 8:55 p. m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at home. Services will be at 10:30 a. m. Saturday in the Mounds Church of Christ in Mounds, with Brother Willie Headspeth Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the Long Reach Cemetery near Ullin. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a. m. Saturday at the church. Massie Funeral Home in Cairo is in charge of the arrangements.

Hattie Erna (Moeckel) Schlimpert

JACOB -- Hattie Erna (Moeckel) Schlimpert, 99, of Jacob, died Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, in Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday morning in the Christ Lutheran Church in Jacob, with Pastor Mike Kettner officiating. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery in Gorham. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p. m. today in the Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro. Mrs. Schlimpert was a homemaker. She was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church and the Jackson County Farm Bureau. She was a former sales representative for the Globe Democrat for 211/2 years for Jackson, Williamson and Southern Randolph counties. She retired in 1971. She was born on April 23, 1905, in Jacob, the daughter of the late Julius Moeckel and the late Adelheide (Brandes) Moeckel. She married Carl G. Schlimpert in St. Louis on April 20, 1929. He died on April 23, 1963. She is survived by one grandson, Glenn James and wife Linda Schlimpert of Jacob; two granddaughters, Karlene and husband Warren Abell of Red Wing, Minn. , and Laura Ticer of Jacob; seven great-granddaughters, Jessica and husband Sam Betts of Gorham, Melinda and husband Brian Jewell of Sparta, Allison, Leslie A. and Sally Abell of Red Wing, Minn. , Alea Schlimpert of Carbondale, and Amy Schlimpert of Jacob; two great-grandsons, Jeffrey and wife Casey Ticer of Gorham and Daniel Schlimpert, U. S. Navy, of Pensacola, Fla.; four great-great-grandchildren, Lillie and Carl Betts and Charles and Colten Ticer, all of Gorham; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Rita Daniel Schlimpert; two sisters, Laura Hubbard and Eleanor Engert; and three brothers, Herbert, Erwin and Walter Moeckel. Memorials may be made to the Christ Lutheran Church General Fund.

Robert 'Bob' Sparks

WEST FRANKFORT -- Robert 'Bob' Sparks, 85, died at 8:25 p. m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. Services will be at 11 a. m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in the Union Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Tower Heights Cemetery in West Frankfort. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Sparks was the former owner/operator of Bob's Quick Stop for many years and of United Real Estate. He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church in West Frankfort. He was born Oct. 12, 1918, in Whitney, Ky. , to Evert and Sallie (Beaver) Sparks. He married Sharon Sanders Brock on June 12, 1982, in West Frankfort. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Sparks of West Frankfort; his family, Andrea Pesavento of Harrisburg, Linda Tracy of Hamilton, Roger Stanley of West Frankfort, Dale Brock of West Frankfort and Sandy Eastridge; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, James Sparks of Johnston City. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anita; his parents; and two sisters, Nevella Donley and Peggy Fleming. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Trinity Methodist Church in West Frankfort and will be accepted at the funeral home.

NEWTON -- Jewell Judith (Emmerich) Bauman, 82, died at 6:50 p. m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at home. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a. m. today in the St. Thomas Catholic Church, with Father William Kessler officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Cemetery in Newton. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p. m. Tuesday at the Buchanan Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the St. Thomas School.

JOHNSTON CITY -- Louise V. Hayes, 83, of Johnston City passed away at 7:50 a. m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at Herrin Hospital. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at the First Freewill Baptist Church in Johnston City with the Rev. Randy Scott officiating, assisted by the Rev. Matt Crain. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City and from 12 p. m. to 1 p. m. Thursday at the church. Memorials may be Hospice of Southern Illinois, envelopes are available at the funeral home. Louise was born on Aug. 4, 1921, in Johnston City, the daughter of Charles and Virgie (Hubbard) Lee. She married John Charles Hayes in 1940, in Jackson, Mo. He preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1995. Louise was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church of Johnston City and a homemaker. She is survived by two sisters, Nina Endrizzi of Johnston City, and Evelyn Spellings and husband Tom of Florence, Miss; nieces and nephews, Gary L. Martin of Springfield, Donna Cooper and husband Forrest of Florence, Miss., Denny Lee and wife Kathy of Arnold, Mo. , Robert Lee and wife Sharon of Teutopolis, Ron Lee and wife Jeanine of High Ridge, Mo. , Mike Lee and wife Kathy of Fenton, Mo., JoAnna Scola and husband Don of West Plains, Mo. , Danny L. Lee of St. Peters, Mo. , and Paula Thomson of St. Charles, Mo. , Debbie Crail and husband Jim of Cleveland, Joel Lee and Kathryn Morse of Newport Beach, Calif.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and five brothers, Harry, Don, Howard, L. D. , and Bobby Lee.

Hazel Walker

JONESBORO -- Hazel Walker, 88, of Jonesboro, passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, in Valparaiso, Ind. She was born on Aug. 31, 1916, in McClure, the daughter of William and Grace (Reams) Rhymer. She married Dan W. Walker on Jan. 8, 1935, in Reynoldsville. Dan preceded her in death on March 2, 1986. Hazel was a farm wife, a homemaker and a heel factory worker. She enjoyed ceramics and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro. She lived in the Mississippi River bottoms and in Jonesboro and Carbondale until the past year, when she moved to the Whispering Pines Healthcare Center in Valparaiso to be near her family. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, James and May Walker of Valparaiso and Jerry and Pat Walker of Wake Forest, N. C.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Eric and Linda Walker of Valparaiso, Joy and Tony Christensen of San Diego, Tina and Steve Erickson of Plymouth, Minn. , Greg and Diane Walker of Morrisville, N. C. , and Andrea Walker of Lake Forest, Calif.; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Sibyl Odette of Carbondale; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted at 11 a. m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joe Aldridge officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p. m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro.

Robert Pate Sr.

HARRISBURG -- Robert Lee Pate Sr. , 74, died at 12:53 p. m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, in Harrisburg Medical Center. Services will be at 11 a. m. Friday, Oct. 15, in Reed Funeral Chapel, with Jerry Frick officiating and the Rev. George Teegarden assisting. Burial will be in Sunset Garden Cemetery in Harrisburg. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p. m. Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Laurie Rainey

TILDEN -- Laurie A. Rainey, 39, died at 2:21 p. m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, in Sparta Community Hospital. Services will be at 11 a. m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in Tilden Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Dennis R. Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in the Tilden City Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5:30 p. m. today and from 7:30 to 9 a. m. at Wilson's Funeral Home in Tilden and from 10 to 11 a. m. Thursday at the church. Mrs. Rainey was a home and garden consultant. She worked in the Business Office at Sparta Community Hospital. She was a member of the Tilden Presbyterian Church and of Delta Theta Tau in Marissa. She was born on Jan. 20, 1965, in Red Bud, to Carl and Bonnie Seabolt McGough. She married Richard W. Rainey on Aug. 4, 1995, in Memphis, Tenn. Survivors include her husband, Richard W. Rainey of Tilden; one daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and James Kohring of Coulterville; her parents, Carl and Bonnie McGough of Marissa; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Patti McGough of Ava and Michael and Annabel McGough of Marissa; one sister and brother-in-law, Christa and Tom Handland of Mauston, Wis.; her mother-in-law, June Little of Tilden; one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Evelyn Cook of Tilden; one sister-in-law, Deanna Cox of Tilden; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Shriner's Hospital.

Ronald Owens

WEST FRANKFORT -- Ronald L. Owens, 58, died at 8:06 a. m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. A memorial graveside service will be at 11 a. m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. There will be no visitation. Friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Owens worked at WPS in Marion. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion Orient Post 1961. He was born on March 8, 1946, in West Frankfort, to Wilburn and Patricia (Fanning) Owens. Ron loved his friends at work and his pet puppies. Survivors include his mother, Pat Simmons of West Frankfort; one sister and brother-in-law, Terry and Harold Baker of Johnston City; one brothers, Allen Owens of West Frankfort; one half-sister, Rhonda and husband Richard Mize of West Frankfort; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilburn, and one brother, Norman Michael. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. Association.

Lee Richard Rawson Sr.

JOHNSTON CITY -- Lee Richard Rawson Sr. , 88, of Johnston City passed away at 10:12 p. m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at the Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with Pastor Brent Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Marion VFW and American Legion. Lee was born on Feb. 19, 1916, in Linn County, Iowa, to Carl O. and Emma E. (Hanson) Rawson. He married Betty M. Whiting on March 10, 1946, in Covington, Iowa, and they celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in March. Mr. Rawson was a World War II veteran, serving in the U. S. Navy, as a sonar man in the South Pacific. He retired from Argonne National Laboratory in 1980, choosing to retire in Johnston City. He is survived by his wife Betty; four children, Karyn and husband Michael, Kathryn and husband Mark, Lee Jr. and wife Linda, and Joanne and husband Steven; brother, Dale Rawson and wife Nelda Faye; brother Virgil Rawson and wife Ruby; sisters-in-law, Mary Rawson and Ferne Rawson; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lillian Coonrod; and two brothers, Joseph Rawson and Leslie Rawson. In Lieu of flowers, donations for the family may be sent care of Pastor Brent Fitzgerald, 1901 N. Park Ave, Herrin, IL 62948.

MARION -- Charles J. Toler II, 74, of Marion passed away at 6:30 p. m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Herrin Hospital. Services will be held at 7 p. m. today in the Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Kenneth Kramer officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p. m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the March of Dimes. Envelopes are available at the funeral home or may be sent c/o Blue Funeral Home, P. O. Box 411, Marion, IL 62959. Mr. Toler was born on March 26, 1930, in Du Quoin, to Charles J. and Grace (Payne) Toler. He married Jackie Tunze on Jan. 24, 1981, and she survives. Other survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Dana Bettasso of Peru, Jill and Larry Johnson of Princeton, and Mindy and Rick Everding of Wyanette; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Jerry Thomas and Brad and Debbie Thomas, all of Marion; his grandchildren, Ryan and Cassie Jeralds, Kedra Jeralds, Jonathan Elliott, Michaelyn Bettasso, Kailey Bettasso, Erica Thomas, Sydney Thomas, Brad and Janea McGee, Holly and Brian Pomrening, and Justin Hunter and Jessica Tolbert; and his great-grandchildren, Courtney McGee, Shanea Simmerman, Christian Pomrening and Madilyn Jeralds. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Cole Bettasso. Mr. Toler owned and operated Toler Insurance Agency in Herrin. He was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Marion.
