Dean F. Burman

Dean F. Burman, 66, Knoxville, Tenn., a former resident of Huntington, died Thursday (Jan. 24, 2002) at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice, Knoxville.

Mr. Burman worked as an engineer at Magnavox in Knoxville.

He was born Nov. 2, 1935 in Huntington to William F. and Mary D. Harper.

Survivors include a son, Michael Burman of Fort Wayne; two brothers, Richard Burman of Indianapolis and Billy Burman of Westfield; two sisters, Ruth Townsend of Texas City, Texas, and Marilyn Allred, Texas; and two granddaughters.

Families and friends of Mr. Burman will gather at a later date for a private funeral service.

Cremation Options, Inc., Knoxville, was in charge of arrangements.

Preferred memorials are to the American Cancer Society or a hospice of the donors’ choice.

Alvin Gene Brown

Alvin Gene Brown, 71, Umatilla, Fla., a former resident of Warren, died at 2 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 20, 2002) at his residence.

Mr. Brown was a 1948 graduate of Salamonie High School. He lived in Warren most of his life, moving to Florida in 1996. He was a member of the Warren Wesleyan Church.

Mr. Brown was born May 9, 1930, in Huntington County, to Jesse James Brown and Mary Alberta Walters Brown. He married Melva Eileen Beeman Aug. 16, 1952, in North Vernon; she died April 2, 1995. He married Mary Lewis Poor in Bluffton in November of 1996; she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Alvin Gene Brown II, Warren, and Rick Brown, Three Rivers, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Pamela) Day, Peru, and Mrs. Howard (Sandra) Vaughn, Bluffton; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, George Brown, Warren; and a sister, Mary Brown, North Vernon.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Bill Barlow officiating. Burial will be at the Redman’s Cemetery.

Glancy Funeral Homes, H. Brown and Son Chapel, Warren, is in charge of arrangements.

Irene D. Miller

Irene D. Miller, 89, a resident of Miller’s Merry Manor in Syracuse, died at 12:10 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) at the Goshen General Hospital. Mrs. Miller, a native of Andrews and a former resident of South Whitley, had been hospitalized since Jan. 12.

Mrs. Miller was a 19-year employee of Chamberlain Products in South Whitley, retiring in the mid 1970s. She was a member of the Pleasant View Church of the Brethren and the South Whitley Garden Club. She was a member of the Happy Hoosiers Homemakers Club from 1961 to 1990.

Mrs. Miller was born Feb. 25, 1912, in Andrews, to Edward and June Bocock Garrison. She married Garland L. Miller Feb. 11, 1929. The made their home in Huntington County until 1961, when they moved to Whitley County. Her husband died May 6, 1983. She moved to Syracuse in 1990.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Clifford (Judy K.) Nicodemus, Syracuse; two grandsons; and a sister, Barbara Rose Ervin, Fort Wayne.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Harry Garrison, Ted Garrison, Hershel Garrison, George Garrison James Garrison, David Garrison, and Billy Garrison, and a sister, Ida White.

Calling is from 2 -4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith and Sons Funeral Home, South Whitley, where services will held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Junior Blough officiating.

Burial will be at South Whitley Cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to the Syracuse EMS or the Syracuse Fire Department.

Barbara J. Leas

Barbara J. Leas, 62, rural Warren, died at 7:35 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) at her home.

Mrs. Leas was a graduate of Warren High School and had been employed at Southern Wells High School for many years. She was a member of and treasurer for Asbury United Methodist Church, Montpelier, where she was a member of United Methodist Women.

She was born May 6, 1939, in Warren, to Earl and Erma McIntire Crispen. Her marriage was Dec. 6, 1956, in Warren, to Jack L. Leas. He survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Dave Leas, Mark Leas, and Dennis Leas, all of Montpelier; two daughters, Mrs. Terry (Gwen) McElhaney, Montpelier, and Mrs. Greg (Nancy) Slentz, Hartford City; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Richard Crispen and Ronald Crispen, both of Bluffton, and Robert Crispen, Huntington; and four sisters, Mrs. Robert (Bernice) Shideler, Warren, Mrs. John (Doris) Willett, Roanoke, Mrs. Max (Colleen) Hodge, Alexandria, and Joyce Brockup, Tulsa, Okla.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Crispen and Ed Crispen, and a sister, Carolyn Cook.

Calling is from 2-8 p.m. Monday at Glancy Funeral Homes-H. Brown & Son Chapel, Warren, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Joe Haney officiating.

Burial will be at Asbury Cemetery, Montpelier.

Preferred memorials are to Family Hospice of Northeast Indiana, 265 W. Water St., Berne, or Asbury United Methodist Church, 7193W-1100N-90, Montpelier, IN 4739.

Martha Viola Baker

Martha Viola Baker, 83, 749 Frederick St., died at 1:42 a.m. Friday (Jan. 25, 2002) at Parkview Huntington Hospital.

Mrs. Baker was employed for 30 years as an inspector at E-Systems. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene and of the Order of Eastern Star, Floral Chapter No. 75.

Mrs. Baker was born July 28, 1918, in Dunkirk, to Fred M. and Flossie McNeese Green. She married Leander Baker on July 17, 1938, in Hartford City. He died March 6, 1987.

Survivors include a son, Leander Baker Jr., Malibar, Fla.; two daughters, Sherry Brown, Huntington, and Nancy Louthan, Huntington; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Fred Green and Howard Green, both of Hartford City, and Paul Green, Upland; and two sisters, Esther Smith, Ossian, and Betty Melton, Hartford City.

She was preceded in death by a son, Rex Baker; four brothers, Bill Green, Donald Green, John Green, and Norman Green; and three sisters, Mae Baker, Annie Smith, and Evelyn Elliot.

Calling is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the Deal-Robbins and Van Gilder Funeral Home-Huntington Chapel, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Richard Frederick officiating. Order of Eastern Star services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Catherine Hart Zay

Catherine Hart Zay, 72, died Monday (Jan. 28, 2002) at St. Vincent’s Hospice, Indianapolis. She had been a former resident of Huntington for 45 years.

Mrs. Zay was born Jan. 5, 1930, in St. Louis, Mo., to George Lawrence and Helen Bernadette Gorman Hart. She was educated in Indianapolis, attending grade school at St. Thomas Aquinas and graduating from St. Agnes Academy in 1946. She was a 1950 graduate of Butler University, earning a bachelor of science degree in education.

She married Rees Ernst Zay in Indianapolis on Dec. 27, 1950. She held the position of secretary-treasurer in the family businesses, which included an automotive dealership, Zay Motors Inc., a leasing company, and an insurance company, Zenith Inc.

While in Huntington, Mrs. Zay taught evening courses in conversational Spanish and was a substitute teacher at Huntington North High School. She served on the Board of Directors of the Huntington YMCA for more than 10 years, serving as secretary, vice president, and president. She was a member of the Camp Dick Runyan Endowment Committee. She was active in the Republican Party with the Lugar, Coats and Quayle campaigns.

Mrs. Zay was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and, more recently, St. Luke’s Catholic Church, Indianapolis. She had been an associate member of Tri Kappa Sorority since 1954, was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, was a longtime member of Monday Club, and belonged to numerous bridge clubs over the years both in Huntington and Indianapolis.

Mrs. Zay was preceded in death by her husband, who died June 12, 1999.

She is survived by three sons, Daniel Zay, Grand Ledge, Mich., Andrew Zay, Huntington, and Richard “Rusty” Zay, Ankeny, Iowa; four daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Maribeth) Fischer, Indianapolis, Mrs. Dale (Donna) Burgard, Zionsville, Mrs. David (Barbara) Moss, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs. Daniel (Marnie) Sloan, Carmel; and 20 grandchildren.

Two sisters, Jody McCarthy and Margaret Hart, preceded her in death.

Calling will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Leppert and Hensley Mortuary, 740 E. 86th St., Indianapolis.

Calling will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, with Father Gary Sigler officiating.

Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington.

Memorial contributions may be made to Huntington Catholic School, 820 Cherry St., Huntington, IN 46750; or to St. Vincent Hospice, 8450 N. Payne Rd., Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46268.

Paul D. Christ

Paul Dyson Christ, 84, of North Manchester, died at 9:50 a.m. Monday (Jan. 28, 2002) at The Heritage of Huntington.

Mr. Christ retired from GTE in 1976 after 28 years of service. He was a member of the North Manchester United Methodist Church and Demming Lodge 88 F&AM, North Manchester. He was a World War II Merchant Marine veteran.

He was born May 26, 1917, in Huntington to Carl E. and Velma Dyson Christ. He married Florence L. Watkinson in Mount Pleasant, Ohio, on Jan. 19, 1947. His wife survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Carol Anne Christ, North Manchester; a son, Randy Lee Christ, Claypool; two brothers, Raymond Christ, Fort Wayne, and Dick Christ, Huntington; and a sister, Mrs. Willard (Virginia) Caley, Hemet, Calif.

He was preceded in death by a son, Paul Dennis Christ; a brother and four sisters.

Calling will be held from noon until the 2 p.m. funeral service Wednesday at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Home, Bender Chapel, 207 W. Main St., North Manchester. Pastor Fred Bishop will officiate.

Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery, Servia.

Preferred memorials are to the North Manchester United Methodist Church or the American Diabetes. Association, in care of Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Home, Bender Chapel, 207 W. Main St., North Manchester, IN 46962.
