Bertie D. Hutsell
June 16, 1916 - October 14, 1998
Bertie D. Sounders Hutsell, 82, Monticello, died at her home, Wednesday, October 14, at 1 p.m.
She was born June 16, 1916 in Mountain View, Mo. Her father was Marion Levi Sauders. She was married April 3, 1936, to Riley H. Hutsell, Salem, Mo.
She had lived the past 50 years in White County.
She was a homemaker, but also worked at Bryan Manufacturing and RCA in Monticello.
She was a member of Chalmers Bible Baptist Church.
Survivors are two sons, Homer Hutsell, Monticello and Marion Hutsell, Brookston; a brother, Bud Souders, Mountain View; a sister, Dolly Webb, Alabama; 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m., Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Charles Fluckey.
Burial was in the Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Sadie M. Jackson.
July 18, 1897 - December 28, 1994
Sadie M. Jackson, 97, formerly of Wolcott, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Home Hospital, Lafayette, where she had been a patient for 13 days.
She was born July 18, 1897 to Charles and Rosetta Kinsall Vinson in Gallatin County, IL. She married Harry L. Jackson on May 21, 1916, and he died in 1974.
She attended Gallatin County area schools.
She lived in Hammond from 1929 until 1945 when she moved to Wolcott. She lived on a farm east of Wolcott until 1990 when she. moved to Davis Manor.
She was a member of the Wolcott Chapter No. 171 of the Order of Eastern Star and was a past grand representative to the Maryland OES. She also was a member of the Wolcott United Methodist Church.
Surviving are four sons, Ralph of Brookston, Ernest of Hendersonville, TN, Harry E. of Wolcott, and Larry of Hammond; 14 grand children; 24 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren,. Two sisters and one brother are deceased.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 31, at the Wolcott United Methodist Church, the Rev. Michael Dillon officiated.
Burial was in. Meadow Lake Cemetery
near Wolcott.
Donald Henry 'Don' Jahnke
May 12, 1918 - December 2, 1994
Donald Henry "Don" Jahnke, 76, West Lafayette, died Friday, Dec. 2, at his home after a five-month illness.
He was born May 12, 1918, to Henry Frank and Dora May Myers Jahnke, in Lewis, Iowa.He was married in 1937 to Lena Sackett, who died in 1968. He was married June 30, 1972, to Doris Morthorst, in Chicago Heights, Ill., and she survives.
He graduated in 1930 from Lewis High School, Lewis, Iowa. He served in the Army during World War II in an engineering unit and attended Illinois Technical Institute for two years.
He moved from Steger, Ill. to Brookston, where he lived for 14 years. He wrote a weekly column, "Don's Views," in the Brookston Prairie Review for the last eight years.
He was a retired electrician and member of the Battle Ground Bible Church.
Surviving with his wife, are a son, Rev. Don L. Jahnke, Chicago; five daughters; Mrs. Orv (Deitrah) Womack, Mokena, Ill., Mrs. Mike (Debra) Fitzgerald, Vero Beach, Florida; Mrs. Douglas (Diane) Wheeler-Born of Coal City, Ill.; Mrs. Bryan (Denise) McLauchlan of Sauk Village, Ill and Mrs. Mike (Mary) Dwyer, Lafayette; a brother, Dale Jahnke, Camp Verde, Arizona and 16 grandchildren. A son, James and sister are deceased.
The funeral was Monday in the Battle Ground Bible Church, the Rev. Chester Martin and Rev. George Thomson officiating.
Burial was in Skyline Memorial Cemetery, Monee, Ill.
Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be given to the Battle Ground Bible Church.
Helen P. James
November 16, 1905 - October 16, 2000
Helen P. James, 94, Monticello, died Monday, October 16, 2000at her residence.
She was born in Upland, IN on November 16, 1905 to Henry John and Nellie Ballinger Henning. She married Henry Ward James on September 24. 1923. He died March 17, 1983.
She attended schools in Jonesboro.
She had lived in Monticello since 1976, coming from Plymouth.
She is survived by sons, Joseph James of Rochester and James (Shirley) James of Kewanna; daughters Delores Sollars of Monticello, Martha Steele of Monon, Mrs. Marion (Mildred) Miller of Argos, and Mrs. Aaron (Lulu) Ousley of Kewanna; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great grandchildren.
Sons Robert James, Larry James and Jack James; daughter Margie James; two great-grandchildren; a brother and two sisters are deceased.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday in Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home with Rev. Brian Green officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Leo Jeffries
March 21, 1920 - January 23, 1988
Leo Jeffries, 67, Brookston, died at 11:33 am. Friday, Jan. Jan 23, in St Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center in Lafayette. He had been a patient there since Jan. 17.
Mr. Jeffries was a truck driver and a dispatcher for Skelly Oil Co. before retiring.
Born March 21, 1920, in Hardin County, Ky., he had lived in the Brookston community for the past 48 years. He was married to Lola N. Nichols, June 3,1939 in Brookston. She survives.
Mr. Jeffries was a member of Brookston United Methodist Church and Monticello Libanus Masonic Lodge 154. He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 251 in Brookston.
Surviving with the wife are a daughter, Mrs. Ron (Leola) Widmer, R.2, Brookston; two sons, Stanley Jeffries, R.2, Brookston and David Jeffries, Brookston; a brother, Jeff Jeffries, West Lafayette; and one sister, Mrs. Fred (Maxine) Dunker, Brookston.
Also six grandchildren, and 1 great grandson survive. Two brothers, Charles and Russell pre preceded in death.
The service was at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gene Ansell officiating. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.
David K. Jenkins
February 8, 1957 - May 16, 1992
David K. Jenkins, 35, Jacksonville, Florida, died Saturday, May 16, in Methodist Hospital, Jacksonville, FL. He had been ill since September and seriously ill for one week.
He was born Feb. 8, 1957, in White County to Kenneth and Ellen Farmer Jenkins.
He was a 1976 graduate of Carroll High School and served in the U.S. Navy for four years.
He lived in the Chalmers and Flora communities most of his life. In 1980 he moved to Jacksonville, FL, and worked there for the Mike Davidson Ford Co. for the last six years.
Survivors include his father of Dowagiac, Mich.; his mother of Delphi; two brothers, Joseph F., Delphi and William R "Bill", Lafayette; three sisters, Mrs. Gordon (Marty I.) Cochran and Mrs. Larry (Ruth M.) Smith, both of Monticello, and Mrs. Darrell (Judy C.) Stevens, Lafayette; a half sister, Mrs. Shawn Fogleman, Mulberry; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mamie B. Farmer, Chalmers; and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Betty Jenkins, Flora. The funeral was Tuesday at Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, the Rev. Scott Slatsman officiating. military graveside rites were conducted at Paint Creek Cemetery, Camden.
Addie P. Johnson
September 20, 1899 - September 6, 1991
Addie P. Roank Johnson, 91, formerly of Chalmers, died Friday, Sept. 6, at Tioga Pines Living Center, where she had resided since Oct. 9, 1989. She had been ill for two weeks.
She was born Sept. 20, 1899, to Preston and Rutha Jane Whitaker Roark. in Tazwell, Tenn. She married Clint M. Johnson in Tazwell, and he died Dec. 25, 1942.
She lived for 39 years, in Chalmers, before moving to Tioga Pines Living Center in Monticello. Prior to moving to Chalmers, she lived in Tazwell.
She worked at Green Gables Restaurant, Reynolds, in the kitchen. from 1952-1966.
Survivors include one half-sister, Mrs. Ruby Green, Carey, Idaho; four granddaughters, Mrs. Les (Phyllis) Condo and Patsy Kinsey, Monticello; Mrs. Michael (Peggy) Lesley, Sierra Vista, Ariz. and Penny Karageorge, Rensselaer; two grandsons, Phillip Massengill, Buffalo and Paul Massengill, Chalmers; 10 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
The funeral was Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Loren Schuman officiating.
Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.
Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society.
Carl Johnson
May 20, 1928 - October 25, 1998
Carl Johnson, 70, of 522 Railroad St., Monon, died Sunday, October 25th in Vencor Hospital, Indianapolis.
He was born May 20, 1928 in Jasper County, the son of Ted and Anna Beryl (Chapman) Johnson. He married Anna Martin on December 24, 1955 in Winamac, IN and she survives.
He had served in the U.S. Army in the
Korean War. He had lived in White County for the past 10 years coming from Jasper County.
He attended the Medaryville Schools. A retired loader operator, he had been employed for 25 years with Vulcan Materials of Monon. He was a member of the Methodist church and the Chalmers American Legion Post #268..
Surviving besides his wife are four sons; Tom Martin of Rensselaer, Carl Dean Johnson Jr. of Francesville, Paul Johnson of Monon and Scott Johnson of Rensselaer. Two brothers, Lowell "Pete" Johnson of Monticello and John Johnson of Chalmers and one sister Norma Johnson of Buffalo. He had 8 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.
1 daughter, 2 brothers and 1 sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services were at the Jackson Funeral Chapel in Rensselaer at 10:30 a.m. today, with Pastor Elmer Conley officiating.
Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery
at Rensselaer.

Helen M. Johnson
October 21, 1916 - April 25, 1999
Helen Mary Johnson, 82, Monon, died Sunday, April 25. at White Co. Memorial Hospital.
She was born Oct. 21, 1916, to Peter and Matilda Becker, in Pulaski County. She was married May 2, 1938 to John Paul Johnson in San Pierre and he died May 8, 1988.
She was a homemaker and worked at Bryan Manufacturing for 28 years. She also worked at Schumacher Electric in Rensselaer.
She was a member of St Frances Catholic Church in Francesville.
She is survived by a daughter Judy Pass of Goodland; brothers, Gene Becker and Jack Becker, both of Winamac; Clem Becker of Medaryville; Carl Becker of Ft Wayne and Tom Becker of South Bend; sisters, JoAnn Beeler of Mishawaka and Pauline Fitz of Winamac; two granddaughters and four grandsons.
A son, two brothers and two sisters are deceased
Funeral service was Tuesday at Kellogg Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul White officiating
Burial was in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville.
