ORVICE N. CLAASEN

RICHFIELD -- Orvice Nadine Claasen, 84, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at her residence in Richfield.

She was born Dec. 14, 1919, to William and Mabel (Stock) Coots in Bethany, Mo.

She married Carl Fredrick Claasen April 16, 1938, in Bethany, Mo. He died Dec. 8, 2000.

She was a helpmate on the farm and a homemaker.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Richfield. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, both in Richfield and Zapata, Texas.

Survivors include two sons, Fredrick Lewis Claassen and wife Ann, Richfield, and Carl Wayne Claassen and wife Damaris, Green Valley, Ariz.; one daughter, Carolyn Sue Long, Hammond, La.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Gerald Coots, Plainview, Texas; one sister, Beulah Coots Chamness, San Antonio; and many relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Garland Coots and Jack Coots, one grandson, James Allen Claassen, and one great-grandson, Adam Carter.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Richfield with Pastor John Jordan presiding.

Burial will be in Richfield Cemetery.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials have been suggested to the United Methodist Church in Richfield and may be mailed to Paul's Funeral Home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

MERLE SKINNER SR.

Merle Skinner Sr., 74, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at Southwest Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 20, 1930, to Troy and Hazel (Hageman) Skinner in Stevens County.

He married Isabel May McCord May 14, 1955, in San Antonio. She died Aug. 27, 1986.

He then married Marie (Wiles) Clanton May 19, 1991, in Wichita. She survives.

He was a 1949 graduate of Liberal High School.

He was a retired farmer.

He was a member of the Lone Star Friends Church of rural Hugoton.

He was a former member of the Elks Lodge of Liberal.

Other survivors include one son, Sam Skinner and wife Lorna Pelton, College Station, Texas; three step sons, Jerry Clanton, Liberal, Gary Clanton and wife Gail, Wichita, and Craig Clanton and wife Marcia, Liberal; three daughters, Cindy Louis and husband Larry, Phoenix, Debbie Spence and husband Lee, Hutchinson, and Connie Niemie of California; two step daughters, Karen Valles and husband Roma, Liberal, and Kayla Hall and husband Jeff, Liberal; 20 grandchildren, Kali Barrickman, Nichole Louis, Drake Louis, Dixie Spence, Dustin Spence, Alex Spence, Rusty Skinner, Beau Skinner, Tanner Skinner, Kyra Skinner, Chris Niemi, Mandy Niemi, Brandy Martin, Chad Clanton, Caleb Clanton, Austin Clanton, Shane Clanton, Crystal Clanton, Landry Mastellar and Latha Mastellar; two great-grandchildren, Paxton Barrickman and Alyssia Eastland; one brother, Don Skinner, Dodge City; and one sister, Betty Peck, Wickenburg, Ariz.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Kay Skinner, and one great-grandchild, Kovy Barrickman.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Lone Star Friends Church with Pastors Dee Estes and Scott Rose presiding.

Burial will be in Restlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials are suggested to Southwest Medical Center Auxiliary for Nursing Scholarships in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second, Liberal, KS 67901.

TERRY S. HECKMAN

Terry Steven Heckman, 59, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

He was born June 28, 1945, to Lawrence and Ruth (Skinner) Heckman in Liberal.

He graduated from Liberal High School in 1963 and from Southwestern College in Winfield. He then went to the University of Dallas and received a M.A. in creative art in 1968, and, the next year, he completed requirements for his Master of Fine Arts.

After returning to Liberal, he began teaching at Seward County Community College. He taught there until his retirement in 1995 to pursue painting full time.

He won many art shows over the years and had several one man exhibitions around the county. In 1978, he won the Wichita, Kansas Artists' Postcard Series, which is a project of the Association of Community Arts Councils of Kansas. The City of Liberal and First National Bank proclaimed Feb. 1, 1985, as Steve Heckman Day.

Survivors include one son, Matt Heckman and wife Heather; one daughter, Stephanie Heckman and husband Chris Kamla; three grandchildren, Danea and Jessica Heckman and Jacob Kamla; one niece, Tracy Ball, Portland, Ore.; one sister, Linda Ball and husband Larry, Indianapolis; one aunt, Esther Swan; and many other aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Seward County Community College Theater with the Rev. Ann Holman presiding.

Memorials are suggested to Risen Glory Church.

GEORGIA TRAHERN

SUBLETTE -- Georgia Trahern, 84, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, at Garden Valley Retirement Village Inc. in Garden City.

She was born Sept. 11, 1920, to John Leslie and Loula Ellen (Odneal) Wiswell in Independence.

She married Howard Trahern Jan. 13, 1941, in Sublette. He survives.

She graduated from Sublette High School in the class of 1939.

She was a homemaker, retailer and a farm wife. She worked at Moore's Ladies Store, Rixon Hardware, sold Cameo Paints and owned and operated The Treasure Exchange.

She was a member of the Christian Church of Sublette and church treasurer for many years.

She was a member of the Banner Friendship Club of Sublette.

Other survivors include one brother, Darrell Wiswell and wife Jennie, Sublette; and many nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Carl Wiswell, and three sisters, Lena Agnes Wiswell, Alma Leona Burr and Leora Williams.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Christian Church in Sublette with Minister David Erwin presiding.

Burial will be in Banner Cemetery in Sublette.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.

Memorials are suggested to either the Christian Church or the donor's choice and may be mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

HELEN E. FLOYD

CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- Helen E. Floyd, 90, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, in Rocky Mountain, Va.

She was born Oct. 11, 1914, in Portsmouth, Va.

She married Henry Russell Floyd. He preceded her in death in 1989.

She was a member of the Deep Creek Baptist Church of Deep Creek, Va. She taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of the senior choir.

She was also a Girl Scout, Brownie Scout and Cub Scout leader for many years.

Survivors include one son, James R. Floyd, Liberal; one daughter, Helen Louise McKay, Rocky Mount, Va.; one grandson; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Henry Russell Floyd Jr.

Services were Monday, Dec. 13, at the Deep Creek Baptist Church in Deep Creek, Va.

GEORGE O. ALLEN

HUGOTON -- George Allen, 92, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004 at Stevens County Hospital.

He was born Mat 25, 1912 to Douglas and Edith Allen in Paonia, Colo.

He married Mary Thrustin on Dec. 17, 1938 in Cedaredge, Colo. She died Feb. 27, 2004.

He was a road forman for the Stevens County Road and Bridge Department.

He was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons Donald Allen and wife Vicky, Emporia, and Larry Allen and wife Karen, Hugoton; four grandchildren, Reagan Karmen and husband Sohil, Olathe Morgan Allen, Emporia, Ty Allen and wife Holly, Dodge City, Trey Allen Shawna, Manhattan; two great-grandsons Braxton and Jaxon Allen and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 at the First Christian Church with Minister Jeff Aenk presiding.

Burial will be at the Hugoton Cemetery.

Friends may call today from 4-8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested for the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton or American Heart Assn. Memorials may be mailed to Paul's Funeral Home, Box 236-Hugoton KS. 67951.
