Robert Crocker Couch
Robert Crocker Couch, 78, of Topeka, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.
Born in Garden City on March 18, 1923, he was the son of Milton Lewis and Orilla "Mayme" (Crocker) Couch. He graduated from Garden City High School and Garden City Junior College, and attended Boy's State in 1940.
Mr. Couch moved from Garden City to Topeka in 1969. He retired from the Department of Revenue of the State of Kansas in 1986.
He was a member of Topeka North Post 400 of the American Legion, where he served as Post Commander in 1989, Chef De Gare of Santa Fe Voiture No. 1148 in 1991, and was First District Commander in 1993. He was a former member of Orient Lodge No. 51 A.F. & A.M., Topeka Scottish Rite Bodies and Arab Shrine Temple, and was a Korean era U.S. Army veteran.
On April 29, 1949, he married Betty L. Anders at Topeka. She survives. He is also survived by a son, W. Bruce Couch, Topeka; a daughter, retired Navy Lt. Barbara Turner, Milton, Fla.; five grandsons; and two great-grandsons.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Parker-Price Mortuary Chapel, Topeka. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka, with military honors conducted by Topeka North Post No. 400 of the American Legion.
Visitation hours begin at noon Sunday at the mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Children and Youth Foundation, in care of Topeka North Post No. 400 of the American Legion, 3029 NW Highway 24, Topeka, KS 66618.
Robert E. "Bob" Smith
SCOTT CITY - Memorial service for Robert E. "Bob" Smith, 68, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating. Inurnment will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mr. Smith died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, from injuries suffered in an airplane crash in Scott County.
He was born June 30, 1932, in Scott County, the son of Jesse "Cyclone" and Isabel G. (West) Smith.
A lifetime resident of Scott City, he was a CFII flight instructor, charter pilot and a professional magician and juggler. His interests were flying and coin collecting.
Mr. Smith was a member of AOPA, Bellanca Aircraft Club and the VIP Center.
In October 1985, he married Doris Kite at Scott City. She died March 26, 1996, at Scott City. He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his companion, Margie Stevens, Scott City; a brother, Jesse Smith, Kansas City, Mo.; an aunt; a nephew; a niece; and a cousin.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Robert E. Smith Future Pilot Scholarship Fund, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.
Alma Jean Hillman
Funeral for Alma Jean Hillman, 73, of Collyer, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ogallah Christian Church, Ogallah, with the Rev. Wayne Lofton officiating. Burial will be in WaKeeney Cemetery.
Mrs. Hillman died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney.
She was born Oct. 18, 1927, at WaKeeney, the daughter of Burl and Sara Elizabeth (McCauley) Frazier. She graduated from Trego Community High School.
A lifelong resident of Collyer, she was a certified nurse's aide, certified med aide and social worker. She was a member of Eastern Star and the VFW Auxiliary.
On Aug. 16, 1946, she married Lyle Hillman at Hays. He died Jan. 6, 1999. She was also preceded in death by a grandson.
She is survived by a son, Ed Hillman, Collyer; four daughters, Neva Hardman, Olathe, Delora Herrman, WaKeeney, Thelma Norris, Wellsville, and Edna Conley, Holcomb; a sister, Edna Folkers, WaKeeney; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 tonight. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Cristina Calderon
Cristina Calderon, 57, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born March 19, 1944, at Eagle Pass, Texas, the daughter of Feliciano and Yolanda Francisca (Villarreal) Sanchez.
In April 1964, she married Jose Luis Calderon at Eagle Pass.
Mrs. Calderon lived in various places throughout her life before moving to Garden City in 1993. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and enjoyed crocheting, gardening, listening to music and dancing.
Survivors include a son, Jose Luis Calderon Jr., Giddings, Texas; two daughters, Marissa Cristina Calderon and Diana Lorena Adame, both of Garden City; two brothers, Sergio Sanchez, New Castle, Okla., and Feliciano Sanchez, Ontario, Ore.; six sisters, Gracela Olbera, Ontario, Ore., Yolanda Hernandez, Norma Ramirez, Gloria Escamilla and Maribel Hernandez, all of Eagle Pass, and Maria de Jesus Lopez, San Antonio; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass and burial will take place in Eagle Pass.

Ryan Chad Turner
Ryan Chad Turner, the infant son of Chet Steven II and Tina Dawn (Tatman) Turner of Garden City, died Friday, April 27, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, where he had been born earlier that day.
He is survived by two brothers, Jefferson Davis Turner and Reed Shannon Turner, and a sister, Courtney Nicole Tatman, all of the home; his grandparents, Mack and P.J. Saunders, Garden City, and Rick and Carol Vandegrift, Phoenix; and his great-grandparents, Bob and Bennie Turner, Leoti, Mike and Margaret Fitzpatrick, Garden City, Dennis and Rhonda Bartlett, Chandler, Texas, Dave and Earlene Tatman, of Gordon, and Barry K. Vandegrift, Ness City.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating.
There will be no visitation. Memorials to the Ryan Turner Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Earl Lee Fine
Memorial service for Earl Lee Fine, 47, of Baxter Springs, will be 3 p.m. Friday at St. Catherine Hospital Chapel, Garden City. Chaplain Shannon Borchert will officiate.
Mr. Fine died Monday, May 14, 2001, in Baxter Springs.
He was born April 1, 1954, at Garden City, the son of Floyde A. and Elizabeth M. Fine.
Mr. Fine attended college and trade school, and was a disabled veteran of the Vietnam War.
On Nov. 20, 1982, he married Caroline Marie Long. She survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Mandy Marie Fine, Garden City, April Dawn Fine and Jennifer Lee Fine, both of Powers, Ore.; two brothers, David Fine, Satanta, and Jack Fine, Kansas; four sisters, Pat Cleere, Shawnee, Okla., Nellie Dunagan, California, Ida White, Arizona, and Judy Hazen, Brighton, Colo.; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James Fine; a sister, Betty Jo Jones; two nephews; and one great-nephew.

Aldon LeRoy "Ike" Smith
Funeral for Aldon LeRoy "Ike" Smith, 67, of Hays, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kyle Ermoian officiating. Burial will be in Fort Hays Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Smith died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at his home.
He was born May 24, 1933, at Francitas, Texas, the son of Henry J. and Lorena B. (Jones) Smith. He worked in construction at Fort Hays State University and was a member of Celebration Church of Hays.
On April 29, 1956, he married Martha G. Leonard at Clayton, N.M. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Linda Miller, Holton; a brother, Ernest, Garden City; three grandchildren; two adopted grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Todd, in 1994; two brothers; and three sisters.
Visitation hours are until 7 tonight and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church or Hospice of Hays Medical Center, both in care of the memorial chapel, 20th and Pine, Hays, KS 67601.
