Juana Montoya

SATANTA - Juana Montoya, 31, of Satanta, died Thursday, June 28, 2001, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident west of Satanta.

The daughter of Eleuterio and Consuelo (Casas) Ledezma, she was born July 14, 1969, in El Porvenir, Chihuahua, Mexico.

She and Heriberto Montoya were married in Mexico. He died Dec. 12, 1990. She was also preceded in death by her father, a sister and a brother.

Mrs. Montoya had lived in Mexico before moving to Moscow and then Satanta in 1990. She worked for Seaboard Farms and was a member of the Jesus Christ One Way Church at Satanta, and enjoyed reading her Bible, listening to Christian music on the radio and spending time with her children.

Survivors include two sons, Freddy Montoya and Javier Fernando Ledezma, and four daughters, Joanna Montoya, Jonee Rehmke, Jennifer Rehmke and Stephanie Rehmke, all of Satanta; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Montoya, Fort Hancock, Texas; her mother, Mexico; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Mike Garza officiating. Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the family and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Helen Lange Vachal

Graveside service for Helen Lange Vachal, 91, of Garden City, took place Thursday in Benton Cemetery, Benton, with the Rev. Scott Martin officiating.

Mrs. Vachal died Monday, June 25, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Oct. 14, 1909, at Exeter, Neb., the daughter of Frederick and Eva Catharina (Bruntz) Lange.

In her early childhood, the family moved to a farm in Sumner County and later to Arkansas City where she graduated from high school in 1927. An outstanding speed typist, she was employed in Arkansas City as a secretary at Gould Insurance Agency.

On Aug. 1, 1937, she married James H. Vachal. After their marriage, they moved to Wichita.

A homemaker, Mrs. Vachal became known for her cooking skills. She was a longtime member of First Salem United Church of Christ in Wichita where she was active for many years.

Following her husband's death in 1988, her health declined. She moved from Wichita to Garden City in 1994 to be close to her only child, Eva Vachal.

Survivors include her daughter and a granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.

Memorials are suggested to First Salem United Church of Christ in Wichita or the donor's choice, both in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

Vesta Jo Wilson

Vesta Jo Wilson, 77, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at her home in Las Vegas.

Born in Garden City on Nov. 15, 1923, she was the daughter of Archie E. and Genevieve (Bishop) Crabb. She graduated from Garden City High School.

Mrs. Wilson had lived in Los Angeles before moving to Las Vegas. She had worked as a clerk for the Social Security Administration for 32 years and was a member of the Business Women's Organization.

On June 30, 1951, she married Edwin Wilson. He survives. She is also survived by a brother, Dave Crabb, Garden City; and a sister, Patricia Lile, Las Vegas. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, William; and a sister, Margaret Holmes.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is planned for later.

Davis Funeral Home, Las Vegas, is in charge of arrangements.

Roy L. Schoen

LAKIN - Funeral for Roy L. Schoen, 73, of Dodge City, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Dodge City, with the Rev. Randall Jahnke officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery in Hodgeman County.

Mr. Schoen died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at his home.

He was born April 1, 1928, on the family farm north of Dodge City, the son of Carl and Marie (Peterson) Schoen. He attended Pretty Prairie Grade School in Hodgeman County and was a graduate of Dodge City High School and Dodge City Community College, earning an associate's degree in 1948.

A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer and rancher, retiring in 1985. In 1963, he received the Outstanding Young Farmer of Kansas Award and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Dodge City Community College. Most recently, he had worked as a certified Realtor and a master senior appraiser specializing in farm and ranch appraisals.

Mr. Schoen was a former member of the Dodge City Board of Education, Ford County Soil Conservation Board of Supervisors, Greensburg Production Credit Association Board and the District Nine Farm Credit Board of Wichita. He held various offices and served on many boards both at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Hodgeman County and Holy Cross Lutheran Church at Dodge City.

On Oct. 7, 1951, he married Peggy M. Webb in Hodgeman County. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Kent and Rex, both of Dodge City, and Jeff, Clearwater; a daughter, Ardis Newton, Lakin; two brothers, Alfred and Clarence, both of Dodge City; three sisters, Lola Boger, Dodge City, Etta Stork, Seward, Neb., and Wanda Boger, Las Vegas; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arnold and Otto; and two sisters, Corinne Harms and Minnie Schoen.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Burkhart Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Prairie or the Holy Cross Lutheran Church Building Fund, both in care of the funeral chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.

Isabelle Davis

Isabelle Davis, 80, of rural Marshall, Mo., died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.

She was born Feb. 4, 1921, near Slater, Mo., in Saline County, the daughter of Dick B. and Hannah M. (Hoener) Heuman. She graduated from Central Missouri State Teachers College.

A resident of Saline County her entire life, she was a homemaker and belonged to Fish Creek Baptist Church.

On June 6, 1943, she married Ralph E. Davis. He survives. She is also survived by four sons, Nelson Davis, Columbia, Mo., Charles Davis, Garden City, Roger Davis, Claycomo, Mo., and Harry Davis, Marshall; a daughter, Marilyn Chambers, LaMonte, Mo.; a brother, Nelson Heuman, rural Slater; a sister, Dorothy Lee Landfear, San Marcos, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Elmer Dean Davis.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Campbell-Lewis Chapel, Marshall, with the Rev. John Lawless officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens Cemetery, Marshall.

Visitation hours are from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Fish Creek Baptist Church, in care of the funeral home, 226 S. Odell Ave., Marshall, MO 65340.

Philip Glenn Ehmke

Funeral for Philip Glenn Ehmke, 50, of Coffeyville, will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Coffeyville, with burial following in Fairview Cemetery, Coffeyville.

Mr. Ehmke died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 1, 1950, in Lane County, the son of Richard Raymond and Eva Delilah (Thomas) Ehmke. He attended school in Dighton, graduated from Dighton High School in 1968 and then attended Coffeyville Community College on a basketball scholarship.

On Aug. 11, 1972, he married Joyce M. Christmore at Coffeyville. After their marriage, they made their home in Coffeyville.

Mr. Ehmke owned and operated a contracting business in the Coffeyville area. For the past year he had been employed by Decker Construction Inc., Coffeyville. He was a member of First Baptist Church, a former member of Sertoma and Ducks Unlimited, and coached Little League baseball and basketball.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Richard William Ehmke and Charles Philip Ehmke, both of Coffeyville, and Glenn Paul Ehmke, Pittsburg; his father, Coffeyville; three sisters, Teresa Ehmke, Dighton, Joyce Baker and Christina Ehmke, both of Garden City; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Edgewood Chapel, Coffeyville, and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral chapel.

Edith E. Hatton

Edith E. Hatton, 85, of Edgerton, Mo., died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at St. Luke's Northland Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

She was born March 2, 1916, at Dearborn, Mo., the daughter of James Ballard and Eva Margaret (Maupin) Stafford. She grew up there and graduated from Faucett High School.

On May 11, 1934, she married Luther A. Hatton. They lived in Weston, Mo., before moving to Dearborn. In 1948, they moved near Edgerton, where they farmed and made their home.

Mrs. Hatton was a member of the congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in Platte City, Mo.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Sharon Lynn Hatton, of the home; a sister, Charlotte Elaine Crotts, Garden City; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ben Stafford and J.W. Stafford; and three sisters, Sylvia Stafford, Aggie McClain and Venora Ellis.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, east of Platte City. Private family inurnment will take place later in Dearborn Cemetery.

Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Gower, Mo., is in charge of arrangements.
