James N. Bagnell

James N. Bagnell, 90, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

He was born March 22, 1912, at Wilmette, Ill., the son of James and Helen Lavermann Bagnell, and grew up in Dwight, Ill.

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 during World War II. Prior to serving in the Army, he participated in professional sports, including football, baseball, basketball and boxing.

On Oct. 17, 1946, he married Muriel Bogren at Las Vegas. She died March 14, 2001. He also was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Casey Bagnell and James N. Bagnell Jr.; a brother, Dave Bagnell; and a sister, Gretchin Moyemont.

A meteorologist, Mr. Bagnell lived in various places throughout the United States before moving from Canon City, Colo., to Garden City in October 2002. He was a volunteer and also served on the board for the Salvation Army in LaCrosse, Wis., enjoyed his sports and was an avid bowler.

He is survived by three sons, Steve Bagnell of Garden City, Bruce Bagnell of Lakewood, Colo., and David Bagnell of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Caitlin Taylor and JoAnn Wilds, both of Duluth, Minn.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Cremation is planned, with a private family memorial service scheduled for later.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Richard E. Harrold

Richard E. Harrold, 59, a former Garden City resident, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at a hospital in Little Rock, Ark.

He was born Jan. 24, 1944, at Eskridge, the son of Carl C. and Rose E. Blank Harrold.

An employee of Kansas Wildlife & Parks for 31 years, he served as game protector in Garden City from 1972 to 1984 and had been Chief of Special Operations (COVERT) in Pratt since 1984. A Pratt resident since 1984, moving from Garden City, he was a member of Pratt Presbyterian Church, Kansas Peace Officers Association and the American Gunsmithing Association, and was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam.

On Sept. 3, 1966, he married Anita K. Manz at Eskridge. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Jason R. Harrold of Omaha, Neb.; and two sisters, Joan Martin of Eskridge, and Janice Pletcher of Boise, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Jeremy, in 1995.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Pratt, with the Rev. Thomas D. Sutter officiating. Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Friday at St. John's Cemetery, Junction City, with U.S. Army military honors conducted.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Larrison Mortuary, Pratt, with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Memorials are suggested to Pratt Presbyterian Church or Camp Hope of the American Cancer Society, both in care of the mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt, KS 67124.

Larry Lee Nance

SYRACUSE - Graveside service for Larry Lee Nance, 72, will be 11 a.m. MST Tuesday at Syracuse Cemetery.

Mr. Nance, of Syracuse, died Saturday, March 15, 2003.

He was born June 23, 1930, at Hutchinson, the son of Cecil F. and Dorothy A. Stewart Nance.

A 1947 graduate of Syracuse High School, he went on to attend one year at Wichita University on a football scholarship before joining the U.S. Army in 1948.

Mr. Nance owned and operated Larry's Liquor Store from 1952 until his retirement in 1999. He was an avid football fan and was on the Syracuse High School Bulldogs Chain Gang for 27 years. After retiring, he spent most of his time playing with his dog, Trixie, and doing yard work.

On Dec. 19, 1948, he married Leta Marie Carter at Syracuse. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, Mark Nance of Garden City, Lorin Nance of Oklahoma City, and Layton Nance of Cheney; a brother, Darrell Nance of Tucson, Ariz.; a grandson; and three granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation hours are until 8 MST tonight at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home & Monuments, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to Hamilton County Library or First Presbyterian Church of Syracuse, both in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Jackie Dawn Robson

SUBLETTE - Jackie Dawn Robson, 9, of Sublette, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Satanta District Hospital.

The daughter of David and Brandy Robson of Hugoton and Tim and Stacy (Green) Golden of Coffeyville, she was born Aug. 11, 1993, at Garden City. She enjoyed listening to Christian tapes and the music on CMT TV.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Jerry and Violet Robson of Sublette, and Corky and Jan Green of Mulshue, Texas; her great-grandparents, Sarah Myers of Kalvesta, Jim and Lois Paris of Tucumcari, N.M., and Ruby Green of San Jon, N.M.; her great-great-grandmother, Cora White of San Jon; two sisters, Morgan Robson and Tanisha Golden; three brothers, J.D. Robson, Mason Golden and Brent Golden; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her great-grandfathers, Samuel Myers and Lacy Green.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Christian Church, Sublette, with the Revs. David Erwin and Tom Massey officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to Satanta District Hospital, in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Lyle E. Abbott Sr.

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Lyle E. Abbott Sr., 90, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike Shields and Bob Artz officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mr. Abbott died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at his home in Scott City.

He was born Feb. 18, 1913, at Monmouth, Ill., the son of George Preston and Esther Relyea Abbott.

A Scott City resident since May 20, 2001, moving from Cedaredge, Colo., he was a retired Baptist minister. He had served several churches including ones in Peyton, Yampa, Flagler, Salida, Elizabeth, Walsh and Aspen, Colo., and in Derby.

On March 27, 1936, he married Eva C. Sewdberg at Chicago. She survives. He also is survived by five sons, Lyle E. Abbott Jr. of Basalt, Colo., John Gerritt Abbott of Camdenton, Mo., Richard Preston Abbott of Cedaredge, David Norman Abbott of Hamden, Conn., and Jonathan Paul Abbott of Parker, Colo.; two daughters, Carrie Mae Marion of Scott City, and Mary Kay Goodfellow of Geneva, Ill.; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Catherine Hospice of Garden City or Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, both in care of the funeral home.

Karl Edwin Niles

SATANTA - Karl Edwin Niles, 85, of Satanta, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Satanta District Hospital.

He was born Nov. 9, 1917, in Beaver County, Okla., the son of Harry Edwin and Grace Ralphona Campbell Niles.

On June 1, 1941, he married Ruby Welch at Beaver. In 1943, they moved from Seiling, Okla., to Richfield where he was a farmer and rancher. After moving to Satanta in 1968, he was a maintenance man at Satanta District Hospital until his retirement. He also was a carpenter at Satanta working for Carlyle Kiehne. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren.

Mr. Niles was a member of Richfield United Methodist Church for 30 years, belonged to the United Methodist Church at Satanta and was a leader of the Methodist Men for many years. He was a former 20-year member of the Soil Conservation Board of Morton County, served as a 4-H leader in Richfield for 10 years, and was a former school board member of Richfield schools. He also took on the role of Santa Claus for many years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Kent Edwin Niles of Richfield, and Robert Keith Niles of Arkansas City; a foster son, Marion L. Brown of Cawker City; two daughters, Deanna S. Niles of Satanta, and Janet K. Anderson of Cawker City; four brothers, Kenneth Niles of Borger, Texas, Earl C. Niles of Victoria, Texas, Dean Niles of Edmond, Okla., and Clifford L. Niles of Brownfield, Texas; two sisters, Marie Jackson of Borger, and Neoma Niles of Sudonia, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Raphonia Niles.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Jeff Miller officiating. Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Richfield Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the Methodist Men of Satanta or the Satanta District Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund, and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Mildred L. Thul

Daughters of Isabella rosary for Mildred L. Thul, 91, will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Dodge City, with the Rev. Joseph E. Bahr officiating. Burial will be in Greencrest Memorial Gardens, Dodge City.

Mrs. Thul died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

She was born Oct. 23, 1911, at Dover, Mo., the daughter of John and Margaret Helliker Witthar. She attended college at Warrensburg, Mo., and also attended Fort Hays State University.

A Garden City resident since 2001, she had previously lived in Dodge City after moving from Topeka in 1974. She had taught school in Missouri and in Kansas before retiring in 1974.

Mrs. Thul was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Daughters of Isabella, both at Dodge City.

On Nov. 28, 1940, she married Norbert Thul at Great Bend. He died Jan. 8, 1989. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Forest and Virgil Witthar.

Survivors include four daughters, Karen Fairfield of Los Angeles, Mary Adams of Topeka, Janice Thul of Kansas City, Mo., and Jolene Windholz of Garden City; and two brothers, Marion Witthar of Hereford, Texas, and John Witthar of Eugene, Ore.

Visitation hours are from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Sacred Heart School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.

Elda A. Unruh

Elda A. Unruh, 95, a former Garden City resident, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Mennonite Friendship Manor in South Hutchinson.

She was born Dec. 24, 1907, at Macksville, the daughter of Charles A. and Anna Berg Becker. She graduated from Garden City High School and Emporia State College.

A longtime Garden City resident, she moved to South Hutchinson in 1989. She was an elementary school teacher before retiring in 1971.

Mrs. Unruh was a member of Crossroads Christian Church in Hutchinson and a charter member of Bible Christian Church in Garden City where she was the music coordinator, choir director and served as a Sunday School teacher, and belonged to Gideons International.

On June 1, 1932, she married Edgar C. Unruh at Garden City. He died Sept. 27, 1992. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Alfred Becker; and a sister, Lura Woodard.

Survivors include a son, Donald Unruh of Hutchinson; two daughters, Shirley Ann Bullard of Sherman, Texas, and Nancy Sue Lindsey of Dallas; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Crossroads Christian Church, Hutchinson, with the Revs. Wayne A. Pittman and Doug Wyatt officiating. Graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Memorials are suggested to Crossroads Christian Church in Hutchinson, Bible Christian Church in Garden City or Gideon's International, all in care of the mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
