Marion Metteal Bowman

Marion Metteal Bowman, 87, Arkansas City, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at the Sumner County Regional Medical Center of Wellington. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City. Brother "Babe" Standerfer and the Rev. Mike Ronan will officiate. Interment will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Born Nov. 20, 1917, in Burden, he was the son of William Jefferson and Jesse Pearl (Skinner) Bowman. He was reared and educated in Arkansas City, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1935. Marion served in the Unites State Navy during WWII, as a carpenter's mate (first class) with the Seabees, 42nd Division. He helped with the rebuilding of Pearl Harbor and Iwo Jima. On March 17, 1946, he married Edith Helen Hughes in Arkansas City. She preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 1983. Marion later married Emma (Schirmer) Parker on May 22, 1986, also in Arkansas City. Marion worked as a carpenter for Bill "Pop" Lord for several years and helped to build many houses around Arkansas City. He later worked for Dixie-Portland Mills (A.D.M.) for 17 years retiring as the head millwright in 1977. He was a former member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church now known as St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He also had been attending First Baptist Church of Arkansas City. Survivors include his wife, Emma of the home; three daughters, Royalyn and her husband, Jim Foiles of Towanda, Rebecca Bay of Salina, and Resa and her husband, David Robertson of Arkansas City; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Edith; and his siblings including a twin that died shortly after birth.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Leon Jordan

Leon Jordan, 78, Arkansas City, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at the Harry Hynes Hospice Facility of Wichita. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Arkansas City with a memorial service following at 2 p.m. at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Born April 3, 1926, in Crescent, Okla. , he was the son of Willie Jordan Sr. and Nancy Marshall Jordan. He served in the United states Army. Leon married Vivian A. Vaughan and the couple made their home in Arkansas City. He was a mechanic at G.E. Engine Services for 25 years. Leon was a member of the American Legion Post No. 18 in Arkansas City. Survivors include his two sons, Oliver L. Davis and his wife, Iona of Denver, Colo., and Leon Jordan Jr. of Denver, Colo.; two daughters, Sherry Williams, Arkansas City and Sheila Goree, Oklahoma City; three brothers, Willie Jordan Jr., Arkansas City, Wilford Jordan, Wichita, and Lawrence Jordan, San Bernardino, Calif.; two sisters, Earlene Franklin, Wichita, and Geraldine McDonald, Arkansas City; 15 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Leon was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 1986; son, Alfred E. Jordan; brother, Lester J. Jordan; and sister, Rose M. Dickey.
A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Barbara Ann (Smith) Thomas

Barbara Ann (Smith) Thomas, El Dorado, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at the First Christian Church, 300 W. Central, El Dorado. Barbara was born Jan. 16, 1944. She was the daughter of Jessie W. Smith and the stepdaughter of Charlotte Smith. She was a wife and mother. She worked in her husband's chiropractic office for 20 years. Survivors include her husband, Harry A. Thomas; one son, Sean M. Thomas; two stepsons, Darren E. Thomas and Warren C. Thomas; one stepdaughter, Karla K. (Gowdy) Thomas; and three grandchildren, Sierra Thomas, and Perry and Levi Gowdy. She was preceded in death by her mother, Beverly Rose Ellen Turner and stepfather, William Turner.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Hospice at First Christian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of All Faiths Funeral Services, Wichita.

Kenneth Edward Kittrell

Kenneth Edward Kittrell died after a brief illness on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Newton Medical Center in Newton. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church in Arkansas City. Interment will be in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Ken was born July 9, 1954, in Arkansas City, the youngest child of Dorothy Wheeler Kittrell and Raymond S. Kittrell. Ken was a graduate of Arkansas City High School. Ken was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his sisters, Sarah Kittrell Penner, of Hillsboro, Kan., and Virginia Kittrell LeSieur, and her husband, Donald LeSieur, of Cape Cod, Mass.; and his brother, James Kittrell, and his wife, Ruth Steiner Kittrell, of Amherst, Mass.; and nieces and nephews. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Dorothy Kittrell; his brother-in-law, Charles Penner; three nieces and two nephews.
Memorials have been established for the Special Olympics of Kansas or the Kittrell Family Memorial Fund at the First Presbyterian Church in Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Dorothy Faye Beck

Dorothy Faye Beck, 91, of Salt Lake City, formerly of Arkansas City, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, in Salt Lake City. Graveside services will be at10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in the Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Dorothy was born Feb. 13, 1913, in Arkansas City, to George D. Spruill and Susie M. Buxton. Dorothy was a graduate of ACHS class of 1931. She married Daniel S. Beck Jr. on April 12, 1935. During the Second World War, she was an employee of North American Aircraft in Los Angeles as a "Rosey the Riveter." Dorothy was a long time member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was called on a mission by the LDS department of education to teach at Chilocco Indian School. In that capacity she served 25 years. She also taught LDS Seminary at ACHS from 1967-1969. During her life in Arkansas City she and her husband owned several businesss. In 1970, she and her husband retired, splitting their time between Ark City, Salt Lake City and Apache Junction, Ariz. For the past 20 years, she has been a resident of the Highland Cove Retirement Community in Salt Lake City, Utah. Survivors include her daughter, Mona Thomas, of Murray, Utah; her sons, Daniel Beck III, of Tucson, Ariz., and Joe Beck, of Arkansas City; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Joseph L. Spruill; and two sisters, Lois Wilson and Vivian Rodger.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

William Donald Kelley, DDS

William Donald Kelley, DDS, 79, went home Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, to be with his parents and other loved ones as his children watched over him. A native of Arkansas City, Dr. Kelley lived the majority of his adult life in Texas, primarily in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He graduated from Baylor University with both his master's and science and DDS degrees and performed pioneering research relating to nutrition and alternative medicine. Dr. Kelley is survived by his brothers, Warren Richard Kelley and Lachlan Phillip Kelley, as well as his four children, nine grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William O. Butler and Velma (Prince) Kelley.
Local arrangements were made through the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Christine M. "Chris" Donovan

Christine M. "Chris" Donovan, 57, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, after a long battle with cancer. Mass of Christian burial was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Denver, Colo. Interment was at 10 a.m. Thursday, in Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver. Recitation of the Rosary was held on Sunday, at 7 p.m. at the church. Survivors include her husband, Gary; son, Matthew Donovan of Denver; parents, Floyd S. and Peggy Herren of Arkansas City; sister, Patt and Don Rausch of Arkansas City; and brother, Stan and Gretchen Herren of Alvaton, Ky.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Newcomer Family Funeral Home, Lakewood, Colo.

Jeanene L. Carnes

Jeanene L. Carnes, 70, Winfield, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Mt. Zion Community Church west of Arkansas City. Interment was in the Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Wellington. Born June 24, 1934, in Wellington, she was the daughter of Judd and Lilah (Dickson) Luton. She was raised and educated in Winfield and Wellington and later graduated from Altus High School in Altus, Okla., in 1952. She later received her A.S. and A.A. degrees from Cowley County Community College and her B.S.W. from Southwestern College. In 1959 she began employment at Binney & Smith until 1960, when she went to work for the Winfield State Hospital as a licensed mental health technician. Following the completion of her B.S.W, degree, she then became a social worker at the hospital and retired in 1996 following 37 years of service. On July 30, 1977, she married Clifton Carnes in Winfield. They made their first home in Arkansas City and later moved to rural Winfield. Jeanene was a member of the Mt. Zion Community Church in Arkansas City. She was also a member of Pi Mu Social Work Honour Society, National Association of Human Services, Kansas Association of Human Services and the Winfield Psychiatric Aide Organization. She served as one of the licensed mental health technicians on the Kansas State Board of Nursing for eight years under three Kansas governors. While on the K.S.B.N., she was appointed as the L.M.H.T. representative on an advisory board for the National League of Nursing. She assisted in writing the licensing law for mental health technicians. Survivors include her husband, Clifton of the home; sons, Rex Kendall and wife, Leslie of Winfield, Lonnie Kendall and wife, Michele of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Clifton Carnes Jr. and wife, Tanza of Wichita; daughter, Tracie Davis and husband, Ron of Clearwater; brother, Tom Luton of Missouri; sister, Junella LaValley of Winfield; 10 grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Steven Carnes Sr.; her brothers, Charles, Glenn and Billy; and her sisters, Mary and Martha.
A memorial has been established for the Mt. Zion Community Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Celia Elizabeth Stout

Celia Elizabeth Stout, 74, Winfield, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at her home. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Tisdale United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Wilmot Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-7 p.m. Sunday. The family will greet friends from 2-4 p.m. Born Jan. 28, 1931, in Winfield, she was the daughter of William and Vesta (Smith) Yianakopulos. Celia worked at the Winfield State Hospital as a licensed mental health technician until retirement. Survivors include her husband, Lloyd "Eli" of the home; son, Rick Stout of Eureka; daughter, Tressa Sherman of Winfield; three brothers, Nick Yianakopulos of Winfield, John Yianakopulos of California, and Ted Yianakopulos of Joplin, Mo.; sister, Pat Sommers of Winfield; and one grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made for Tisdale United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

William Eugene Ritchards

William Eugene Ritchards, 83, Winfield, Kan., passed away Wednesday morning, Feb. 2, 2005, at Wesley Medical Center, in Wichita. Born June 7, l921, in Elk Falls, Kan., he was the son of Simon William and Nellie Augustus (Clough) Ritchards. He was raised in Elk Falls and later moved to Burden, Kan., where he graduated from Burden High School, in l941. Following graduation, he began employment with Boeing Aircraft, in Wichita, where he worked in the engineering department as a planner. He was united i n marriage on May 27, l942, to anna Bernice Rozar, in Sedan, Kan. His employment with Boeing took the couple to California, Washington and Louisiana. They moved to Winfield in l989, where they had resided until December of 2004, when they moved to Arkansas City to be near family. William was a member of the Central Baptist Church, in Winfield, where he had been actively involved ina gem and mineral rock club. His family includes the following: his wife, Bernice, of the home; his daughters, Mauree Saad, and husband, Jim, of Wichita, Kan., and Marsha Ann Hicks, and husband, Paul, of Arkansas City, Kan.; his six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Clough Ritchards; and his sister, Wilma Kill, Buena Mann and Dorothy Kent. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Central Baptist Church, in winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 - 9 p.m., Manday, Feb. 7, 2005. The family will greet friends from 6 -7 p.m.
A memorial has been established in William's name for the Central Baptist Church - Building Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Anna Helen Ruth (Westin) Muret

Anna Helen Ruth (Westin) Muret, 91, of Winfield, died Monday morning, Jan. 5, 2009, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, south of Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. The family will greet friends during this time. Born March 3, 1917, in Courtland, Kan., she was the daughter of Walfrid and Clara (Franson) Westin, Swedish pioneers in Kansas. Helen was employed for the Federal government as a home economist in the Farmers Home Administration in Cowley and Sumner counties in Kansas. She later was employed as a substitute teacher for Winfield High School. Survivors include her son, William E. Muret, of Winfield; daughters, Jeanne Louise Schmitt, of Great Bend, and Rita Ann Wiles, of Marienthal, Kan.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond C. Muret; her brother, Carl Westin; her sister, Francis Williams; and one grandson,.
Memorials have been established for the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, or the charity of the donor's choice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Johnna Patrice Weber

Johnna Patrice Weber, 43, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. The Rev. James Newman will officiate. Interment will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Johnna was born Sept. 21, 1965, to Billy M. McFarland and Patricia A. (Miller) McFarland in Fontana, Calif. She served in the United States Navy for 10 years. On Jan. 1, 1998, she married James A. Weber. Johnna was employed at the C-Store on the Kansas/Oklahoma border. Survivors include her husband, James Weber, of the home; daughter, Victoria Dawn Weber, of Claremore, Okla., son, Vincent Dean Weber, daughter, Adrianna Lynn McFarland, twin son, Shawn Burton Weber, twin daughter, Rebecca LeAnn Weber, all of Arkansas City; mother, Patrcia McFarland, of Arkansas City; brothers, Troy McFarland and wife, Lisa, of El Cajon, Calif., Shane McFarland and wife, Chasta, of Fayetteville, Ark., and many aunts uncles and cousins. Johnna was preceded in death by her father.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Jewell L. Johnson

Jewell L. Johnson, 89, of Winfield, died Saturday morning, Jan. 10, 2009, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday. The family will greet friends from 6-7 p.m. Born May 12, 1919, in Purcell, Okla., she was the daughter of Benjamin and Leola (Grace) Givens. She and her husband made their home in Winfield where they raised their sons and remained most of their lives. Survivors include her son, Fred L. Johnson, of Maize; sister, Creola Mitchell, of St Louis, Mo.; three grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orvan G. Johnson; and her son, Ben G. Johnson.
A memorial has been established for Harry Hynes Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Naaman Taylor

Naaman Taylor, 77, of Oxford, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at the St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, in the Oxford Cemetery. Pastor Glendon Epp will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home from Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Naaman was born on Jan. 21, 1931, in Jackson County, Ark., the son of Lemuel and Lula Mae Bryant Taylor. Naaman was a farmer and worked at the Alf Alpha Mill for about 15 years. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Taylor, of Oxford; two sons, Timmy Majors, of Winfield, and John Taylor, of Augusta, Ark.; four daughters, Lula Ernst, of Oxford, Shirlon June, of Augusta, Ark., Karen Shank, of Shirley, Ind., and Sherry Ballard, of Oxford; brothers, Willie Taylor, of Oxford; and sister, Mary Lacefield, of Goshen, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, one brother, and a grandson.
A memorial has been established in his name. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Oxford Funeral Service of Oxford.

Fern Duncan

Fern Duncan, 97, Winfield Rest Haven, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at the William Newton Hospital in Winfield. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home chapel. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery in Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3-7 p.m Tuesday. Born Sept. 25, 1911, in Caldwell, she was the daughter of George and Olive Jane (Alt) Sargent. She and her husband started the Duncan Dairy in Winfield in 1933 and later added a dairy store. Later, Fern worked full time in her beauty shop in her home. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George W. Duncan; brothers, Clarence, George; sisters, Clara Hess, Fanny Rathburn, Grace Reck and Bernice Coker.
A memorial has been established for the Trinity Lutheran Church or Winfield Rest Haven. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Buel D. Beck

Buel D. Beck, 79, of Arkansas City, died Friday, Jan, 9, 2009. A Celebration of Life is being held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, in the Robert Brown Theater at Cowley College, Arkansas City. Refreshments will be served in the Earle N. Wright Community Center following the service. Buel was born Sept. 15, 1929, in Barnsdall, Okla., to Daniel S. and Margaretta (Green) Beck and moved to Arkansas City that year. He served honorably in the United States Army, was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and returned to Arkansas City in August of 1947. He graduated from Cowley College in 1951. He married Norma Sylvia Faurot on Dec. 30, 1950, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 13, 2003. At the time of his death, Buel was in his 18th year of managing the mail room at Cowley College. He began working at Cowley after his retirement from the U. S. Post Office, where he worked for 34 years. Survivors include his two daughters, Liz Sergeant, of Salina, and Cassie Bayless, of Houston, Texas, and their husbands, Jim Sergeant and Jack Bayless, along with his granddaughter, Katy Peterson, of Louisville, Ky.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Buel Beck Scholarship Fund at Cowley College. Contributions to the scholarship fund should be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.
