Arceola Smith

Arceola M. Smith, 86, of 1801 Manning, Winfield, died April 30, 1998, at her home.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with Second Baptist Church. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.

Smith was born May 9, 1911, in Perry, Okla., to Anthony and Geneva (Hill) Bourland. She received her early education in Perry schools and graduated in 1929 from the Langston, Okla., academy high school.

On March 12, 1932, she married Alvin M. Smith in Perry. The Smiths lived in Perry before moving to Winfield in 1935.

She was employed by the St. John's College housekeeping department and later served as cook for the Winfield Elks Lodge for several years.

A homemaker, Smith resided in Winfield for 63 years. For over 50 years, she was a member of Second Baptist Church where she served with the church missions board. A longtime member of Manilla Chapter 22 of the Order of the Eastern Star, she was formerly affiliated with the So-and-So Club.

Survivors include her husband, Alvin Smith, Winfield; two sons, Wendell Smith and Delwin Smith, and a daughter, Darlene Meeks, all of Wichita; a brother, Armethas Bourland, Stockton, Calif.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mary Stewart

Services for Mary Susan Stewart were held at 2 p.m. May 1, 1998, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Pastor Jerry Hedrick Sr. officiated. A private burial service will take place later in Elsmore Cemetery.

Vocal music was performed by Jerry and Nelda Hedrick.

Honorary casket bearers were Chris Poma, James Silvers, Ty Silvers, Daniel Stewart, Lucas Stewart, Tim Stewart, Tom Stewart, Stan Stewart II and Steve Stewart.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.

Gladys Ramsey

Gladys E. Ramsey, 93, of Route 2, Winfield, died May 1, 1998, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Steve Souther will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Visitation at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is until 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with First Presbyterian Church.

Ramsey was born May 30, 1904, to James Ivan and Mary Ann (Tindal) Pitman near Minneola. She graduated from Minneola High School and from Southwestern College in 1930 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

On July 27, 1932, she married Wayne A. Ramsey near Minneola.

Ramsey taught at Dodge City Junior High School for a short time before moving back to Winfield and teaching in Akron, Mount Zion and R9/Pleasant Valley rural schools. She taught off and on for 20 years while helping with the farming and raising a family.

Ramsey was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, serving on many committees, organizing luncheons, being a deacon and a Mariners member, and teaching youth groups and Sunday schools classes.

In her early years she was involved with the Mount Vernon Church and youth groups.

She was a member of the Proto Home Demonstration Unit and Farm Bureau and a leader of the Valley View 4-H Club. She had been a Mount Zion school board member and was still involved in the Merrymakers and the Kellogg community at the time of her death.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Ramsey, Winfield; a son, Dwight Ramsey, Arkansas City; two daughters, Janis Y. Reinhardt, Erie, and Lois Ann Somer, Sterling, Neb.; two sisters, Olive Musser, Topeka, and Marjorie Priesner, Ashland; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Marjorie Alexander

ARKANSAS CITY - Marjorie F. Alexander, 78, of Arkansas City, died May 3, 1998, at Sterling House in Arkansas City.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Wade C. Graber and Gale Rider will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the National Kidney Foundation. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Alexander was born July 3, 1919, in Stillwater, Okla., to David I. and Lottie (Long) Lane. Her family moved to Arkansas City when she was a child. She attended local schools and graduated from Arkansas City in 1937.

On June 15, 1938, she married Arthur D. Alexander in Arkansas City where they made their home. They moved to Cedar Vale in 1942 and back to Arkansas City in 1972. Her husband died June 10, 1992.

Alexander was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. Over the years, she served in many capacities, including Sunday school teacher and deaconess. She had been a member of the bell choir and singing group Melodeors at the church, and she also sang with the Twilighters at the senior center.

Survivors include two sons, Syd Alexander, Arkansas City, and Stephen Alexander, Carrollton, Texas; two daughters, Susan Demoss, Arkansas City, and Sally Zook, Paola; eight grandchildren and four great-grandsons.

Edith Arnold

MOLINE - Edith Lorena Arnold, 92, homemaker, of Moline, died May 2, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.

Services and inurnment will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Longton Cemetery. Graves-Baird Funeral Home of Sedan is in charge of arrangements.

Arnold was born Dec. 31, 1926, in Longton.

She married Grover Cleveland "Clee" Arnold. He died Sept. 30, 1975.

Survivors include two sons, Don Arnold, Wichita, and Erville Arnold, Mercedes, Texas; three grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Gerry Robinson

MANHATTAN - Gerald David "Gerry" Robinson, 57, of Manhattan, died April 30, 1998, at his home following a sudden illness.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Westview Community Church, Manhattan. Pastor Ron McClung will officiate. Burial will be in Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Memorial contributions can be made to Westview Community Church through Edwards-Yorgensen-Meloan Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.

Robinson was born Oct. 14, 1940, in Winfield, to Alfred Boyd and Lela Marie (Hippensteel) Robinson. He attended Winfield schools and Southwestern College. He later received his bachelor's degree in marketing from Kansas State University.

Robinson served in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964 as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, during the early stages of the Vietnam War.

On Sept. 22, 1990, he married Sandra Sue Weber in Manhattan.

He was most recently employed as Topeka branch sales manager for Berry Tractor and Equipment Co., specializing in heavy equipment sales.

He was a member of Westview Community Church where he had served as head usher, trustee and member of the church board.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Robinson, Manhattan; two sons, Michael David Robinson, Kansas City, Mo., and Zachary David Robinson, Manhattan; three daughters, Kimberly Joy Robinson, Cape Coral, Fla., and Gerri Deana Robinson and Terri Robinson Bieler, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three brothers, Cecil Lee Robinson, Phoenix, Boyd E. "Gene" Robinson, Mount Vernon, Mo., and Larry James Robinson, Muskogee, Okla.; a sister, Cathy Ann Robinson, Winfield; and one grandson.

John Jarvis

John Edmund Jarvis, 89, of 1021 E. 10th, Winfield, died May 3, 1998.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Steve Souther will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Jarvis was born Dec. 25, 1908, in Winfield, to George Leonard and Jessie (Lynn) Jarvis. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School.

A member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, he graduated from the University of Kansas in 1931 with a bachelor's degree in history and economics. He also attended Harvard University.

A member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps at KU, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 as a lieutenant. He was a radioman and worked at a blimp base guarding the Mississippi River at Houma, La. He was later stationed on Guam. On the night of Aug. 14, 1945, he was on duty in Guam and received the "cease fire" message from Washington, D.C. He relayed the message to Admiral Chester W. Nimitz and was advised to relay the message to the entire Pacific fleet, announcing the end of the war.

On Feb. 14, 1940, he married Shirley Johnson in Winfield. She died Dec. 24, 1988.

Jarvis began working at the First National Bank in 1932 and retired from day-to-day operations in 1987. He had served as president of the bank since 1967 and retired as chairman of the board in 1990.

Jarvis was active in the Boy Scouts of America and served on the executive board of the Quivira Council. He received the highest award of the Boy Scouts, the Silver Beaver.

He was also a longtime board member of Snyder Research Foundation and the Kansas Bankers Surety Corp. A member and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church, he was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, financial officer of the American Legion, a member of the board of directors of United Way and a member of the Winfield Country Club and Elks Lodge.

Survivors include two sons, Ed Jarvis, Winfield, and Paul Jarvis, Buffalo, Wyo.; a sister, Nancy Sullivan, Milwaukee, Wis.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

An infant daughter, Sue Jeanne, died June 9, 1944.

Walter Hunt

ARKANSAS CITY - Walter A. Hunt, 92, died May 3, 1998, at Medicalodge East in Arkansas City.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Hackney Community Baptist Church.

Hunt was born Sept. 24, 1905, near Arkansas City, to Robert P. and Ella Rea (King) Hunt. He was raised in the rural Arkansas City area and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1924.

On Nov. 12, 1927, he married Anna Mumaw in Arkansas City. She died Dec. 9, 1973.

On Nov. 16, 1974, he married Alice L. Heuszel in Arkansas City.

Hunt was a longtime farmer and stockman. For many years, he maintained a registered shorthorn cattle herd as well as a certified seed wheat business. He also owned and operated Hunt Drilling Co. and PVC pipe business. He was a pioneer in farm irrigation.

He served on many boards and committees, including the Kansas State Board of Agriculture. He was instrumental in establishing the testing of all retail scales.

Hunt also served on a committee to reorganize and consolidate the rural schools of Cowley County.

He was a 50-year member of the Kansas Livestock Association and a member of the Master Farmer Association and Hackney Community Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Hunt, Arkansas City; two sons, Donald W. Hunt, Arkansas City, and Robert G. Hunt, Stilwell; a daughter, Jo Ann Sheldon, Arkansas City; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
