Kathryn Hawkins

ARKANSAS CITY - Kathryn Hawkins, 77, of Arkansas City, died May 6, 1998, at her home.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Dexter Cemetery. The Rev. Wade Graber will officiate.

Memorials have been established with the Kansas Humane Society and the building fund of the First Baptist Church of Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through Hawks Funeral Home.

Hawkins was born July 14, 1920, in Wichita, to Henry M. and Ruby A. (Weidenbach) Fisher. She graduated from Wichita North High School and Wichita Business College.

On April 18, 1940, she married George E. Hawkins Sr. in Wichita. They lived in Wichita, Winfield and Dexter before moving to Arkansas City in 1969. Mr. Hawkins died July 8, 1996, after which Mrs. Hawkins moved into town.

In 1988 she retired from the Kansas Department of Motor Carriers where she had worked at the port-of-entry for several years.

She attended First Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, George Hawkins Jr., Arkansas City, Henry R. Hawkins, Manassas, Va., and Jon K. Hawkins, Baldwin City; four daughters, Suzanne K. Smith, Newkirk, Okla., Jennifer Wollard and Sheri Ramirez, both of Arkansas City, and Phyllis Melton, Cedar Vale; two brothers, James H. Fisher, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Richard Fisher, Shell Knob, Mo.; two sisters, Margaret Hommertzheim, Sharon, and Josephine Mobbs, Dalhart, Texas; 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Fred Travis

AUGUSTA - Fred G. Travis, 80, of Augusta, retired Chautauqua County farmer and rancher, died May 8, 1998, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services were held at 1 p.m. May 11 in Grace Lawn Cemetery at Howard. The Rev. Keith Dudeck officiated.

Honorary casket bearers were Alfred and Ferne Burdette, Ramon and Betty Criss, Lyman and Doris Fesler, George and Carmelita Lorenz, Vernon and Dorothy Morss, John and Beth Wall and Howard and Lois Worley.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Fred G. and Betty L. Travis Memorial Fund, USD 285, Cedar Vale, KS 67024, and the American Lung Association through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Travis was born Sept. 30, 1917, on a farm northwest of Howard, to John J. and Mary Anna (Johnson) Travis. He attended school in the Elk County area.

On Dec. 9, 1945, he married Betty L. Malmgren in Lewiston, Idaho. She died in 1986.

On Jan. 3, 1987, he married Cora E. (Criger) Woodfin in Winfield. They had made their home in Augusta for several years.

Travis served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. He devoted most of his life to farming and ranching in Chautauqua County before retiring in 1983.

He was a longtime member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Cora Travis, and a stepdaughter, Marsha Beth Jackson, both of Augusta; a brother, Edward R. Travis, Atlanta; two sisters, Pauline Jontra, Coffeyville, and Ruby Molter, Atlanta; four stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Alma Lazenby

Alma Lazenby, 93, longtime resident of Winfield, died May 10, 1998, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, north of Arkansas City.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight and until noon Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with Winfield Rest Haven. Contributions can be made through the nursing home or funeral home.

Lazenby was born Aug. 4, 1904, at Atkins, Ark., to P.R. and Bennie (Beeson) Lazenby. She was raised in the Atkins area and graduated from Atkins High School.

She received a teaching degree from East Central State University in Oklahoma and a master's degree in English education from Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn.

Lazenby was employed as a secondary school teacher in Oklahoma and Kansas, including at Udall, Oxford, Caldwell, Neodesha and Uniontown.

She had owned a home in Winfield since 1948 and lived here summers for many years. She moved to Winfield permanently after her retirement and had resided at Winfield Rest Haven since September 1991.

A member of the Atkins United Methodist Church, she was a longtime affiliate of national and Kansas education associations.

Survivors include a sister, Coma Jones, and a nephew, Byron Jones, both of Winfield; and two great-nieces.

Armand Thompson

Services for Armand W. Thompson, 92, who died May 6, 1998, were held at 2 p.m. May 11 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Rick Thornton officiated. Burial was in Green Lawn Cemetery in Grenola.

Keith Anglemyer was the organist. Special music was "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden."

Casket bearers were Max Allison, Jim Futhey, Carl Jordan, Dick Jordan, Harold Rhodes and Rollin Stegelman.

A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church.

Pat Ingram

BELLE PLAINE - Pat Ingram, 74, of Belle Plaine, died May 10, 1998, at her home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Belle Plaine United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Ingram was born Sept. 2, 1923, south of Belle Plaine to Felix and Maude (Bender) Blankenship. She graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1941.

On Sept. 2, 1949, she married Bob Ingram in Winfield. They made their home on a farm west of Belle Plaine.

Ingram worked for the Coleman Co. for nine years, drove a school bus for Riverdale and the Belle Plaine school districts for 35 years, delivered Friendship Meals for the Barner Center for five years and helped her husband farm.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Ingram, and a son, Rex Ingram, both of Belle Plaine; two daughters, Dana Morris, Wichita, and Renee Jones, Belle Plaine; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Maye Metzinger

ARKANSAS CITY - Maye Ilene Metzinger, 71, of Arkansas City, died May 11, 1998, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Francis Cox will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery.

The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established for her grandchildren's education. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Metzinger was born April 12, 1927, in Udall, to William E. and Edna E. (Dye) Reeves. She was educated in Udall and Winfield schools.

On March 29, 1951, she married Robert E. "Gene" Metzinger in Arkansas City. In 1952 they moved to Winfield and lived there until returning to Arkansas City in 1963.

A homemaker, Metzinger was a member of the Sweet Adelines singing group in Wichita, Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Sacred Heart Altar Society and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Metzinger, Arkansas City; two sons, Randy E. Metzinger, Dallas, and Robert J. Metzinger, Arkansas City; a daughter, Christina A. Utt, Arkansas City; a twin sister, Faye A. Koenke, Arkansas City; a brother, Melvin P. Reeves, Gilbert, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Lois Fields

ARKANSAS CITY - Lois Adele Fields, 78, formerly of Winfield, died May 11, 1998, at Medicalodge North in Arkansas City.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Greenlawn Abbey Mausoleum in Blackwell Cemetery. The Rev. Charles Ryser will officiate.

Honorary casket bearers will be Paul Ailcy, Michael Fields, Chris and Ed McGlasson, Matthew Wintz and Jim Horning.

Memorials have been established with the United Negro College Fund, 1444 I St. NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC, 20005, and The ALS Association, 21021 Ventura Blvd., Suite 321, Woodland Hills, CA 91364.

Roberts and Sons Funeral Home of Blackwell is in charge of arrangements.

Fields was born March 19, 1920, in Blackwell, to Peyton E. and Edith (Clower) Brown. She was raised in Blackwell and attended Blackwell public schools, graduating in 1938.

She continued her education at Lindenwood College for Women in St. Charles, Mo., then attended Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa and Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, where she studied social work. While there, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

On May 24, 1942, she married Melvin F. Fields in Brownwood, Texas. They lived in California where he was stationed in the service. During World War II, they lived in Vienna, Austria, for three years. Following the war, they lived in various locations in conjunction with his military career.

In 1964 Fields returned to Blackwell to make her home and complete her education at Oklahoma A&M.

She worked in the social services department of Winfield State Hospital and Training Center from 1968 until retiring in 1975.

Fields then returned to Blackwell to care for her parents. Following their deaths, she moved to Wichita, where she lived until moving to Arkansas City in 1988.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Wichita.

Survivors include a son, Stanley P. Fields, Bethany, Okla.; two daughters, Kathleen A. Ailcy, Medford, Okla., and Barbara L. Wilcox, Derby; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A son, Steven Fields, preceded her in death.

Pearl Nichols

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Pearl Emma Nichols, 86, of Englewood, died May 12, 1998, at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Jerre Nolte will officiate.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Nichols was born Nov. 29, 1911, in Wichita, to Augustus and Emma (Moore) Harbaugh.

On May 31, 1947, she married Hayward Dean Nichols. He died Feb. 14, 1993.

Nichols had been a sheet metal riveter at Cessna Aircraft, a grocery store owner and a licensed practical nurse at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.

A Winfield resident for over 40 years, she had lived in Englewood since 1994.

She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion auxiliaries, both of Winfield.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Wong, Englewood, Colo.
