Brett Kunkel

Laura Kunkel

WICHITA - Brett Allan Kunkel, 13, died Aug. 19, 1999, and his sister, Laura Elizabeth Kunkel, 15, died Aug. 23, 1999, from injuries received in an automobile accident on Aug. 19. Brett and Elizabeth resided in Wichita but formerly lived in Oxford.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Douglass. The Rev. Ron Keith will officiate. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Christian Hills Camp in Eureka.

Elizabeth was born May 8, 1984, and Brett was born Jan. 14, 1986, to Terry Dean and and Sherri Kim (Yauk) Kunkel. Elizabeth was to attend Wichita Southeast High School, and Brett was enrolled at Brooks Middle School in Wichita. They had attended Oxford Elementary School, and Laura had begun middle school there as well.

Laura played flute in the middle school orchestra and took private lessons. Brett was a member of the Wichita Wind Ensemble, the Wichita All-City Band and the German Club at the middle school.

They were active members of Rock Christian Church where they took part in the youth group and camping program.

Survivors include their parents, Terry Kunkel, Belle Plaine, and Sherri Kim Yauk, Wichita; a brother, Jesse Kunkel, Belle Plaine; their grandparents, Norma Kunkel, Douglass, Ardene Bonds, Kansas City, Mo., and Richard Yauk, Wichita; and their great-grandparents, Susan Yauk and Thayne and Gladys Gordon, all of Wichita.

Jeffrey Orand

WICHITA - Jeffrey Dean Orand, 38, of Wichita, former Winfield resident, died Aug. 21, 1999, at his home in Wichita following an extended illness.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in the New Salem Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the Kansas Foundation for the Blind, the American Kidney Foundation and the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Orand was born Aug. 7, 1961, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield, to Donald R. and Judy A. (Shouse) Orand. When he was seven years old, he moved with his parents and family to Newton where he was raised and educated.

A 1978 graduate of Newton High School, he began work at a mobile home factory in Halstead.

He married Teresa Martin, but they later divorced.

An Oxford resident from 1980 through 1982, he lived in Winfield until moving to Missouri in 1995. He owned and operated his business, Jeff's Furniture Refinishing, in Winfield during the early 1990s. He has lived in Wichita since 1998.

Affiliated with Tisdale United Methodist Church, he was formerly a member of the Winfield Lions Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Tamara Orand Baucom, Wichita; his parents: Don and Judy Orand, Wichita; two brothers, Donnie Orand, Derby, and Craig Orand, Wichita; and his grandmother, Barbara Orand, Wichita.

A son, Todd A. Orand, died Jan. 21, 1982.

Grace Sanders

ROSE HILL - Grace Alma Sanders, 89, of Rose Hill, former longtime Winfield resident, died Aug. 21, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Sanders was born Sept. 13, 1909, on a farm near Winfield, to William Allen and Luvena Fern (Bowman) Workman. She was raised and educated in the Winfield area and attended school in the Prairie Home rural school.

On Oct. 23, 1932, she married Roy N. Sanders at Newkirk, Okla. They farmed in Walnut Township north of Winfield for several years before moving into Winfield in 1938.

A homemaker, Mrs. Sanders was also employed with the former Sutton Nursing Home and in private nursing for a number of years. She later worked in housekeeping for Southwestern College. She was employed at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield for many years prior to her retirement.

She continued to reside in Winfield until moving to Rose Hill to live with her daughter and family in 1980.

Mr. Sanders died in 1985.

Survivors include two daughters, Alma M. Finley, Rose Hill, and Betty Bechtold, Troy, Mo.; a sister, Minnie Wood, Winfield; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Weaver

Kenneth R. Weaver, 83, of 1201 Menor, Winfield, died Aug. 21, 1999, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Cedar Creek Cemetery, southeast of Dexter. Miles Funeral Service in Winfield is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Weaver was born June 13, 1916, on a farm near Hoosier, to William Riley and Abigail (Rush) Weaver. Raised and educated in the Dexter community, he attended Fairview rural school and began farming as a youth.

A veteran of World War II, Weaver served with the U.S. Navy as a signalman. He was on board both the USS Wasp and the USS Lexington when they went down in the South Pacific. He was awarded two commendation ribbons for his service.

Following discharge, Weaver returned to Cowley County where he worked as a farmer and stockman.

Survivors include two brothers, Billy P. Weaver, Burden, and Curtis Weaver, Dexter; a sister, Gayle Wilkinson, Langley, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Cadwell

Mary Cadwell, 76, of 2015 Loomis, Winfield, died Aug. 22, 1999, at her home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will take place later.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Cadwell was born June 2, 1923, in Dunston County, Durham, England, to George Walter and Ethel Black. She attended Dunston County schools and as a young woman worked as a book binder in an English print shop.

During World War II, she was a member of the Women's Land Army. In September 1944 she met her husband, Warren Cadwell, in England where he was stationed with the United States Air Force. They married on April 21, 1945, in Farnham, Berkshire, England.

After their marriage, the couple lived in Winfield.

Survivors include her husband, Warren Cadwell, Winfield; a daughter, Carol Cadwell, Wichita; a brother, Robert Black, Manchester, England; and three sisters, Marion Northeast and Jean Wood, both of Wiltshire, England, and Betty Stoker, Slough, Berkshire, England.

Sadie Goodwin

Sadie Goodwin, 89, of Cumbernauld Village, lifelong resident of Winfield, died Aug. 23, 1999, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Memorial Lawn Cemetery south of Strother Field.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and before service time Thursday.

Memorials have been established with Meals On Wheels and the Winfield Community Food Pantry.

Goodwin was born Dec. 31, 1909, in Winfield, to James G. and Ella (Stevenson) Hensley. She attended Winfield schools.

In 1927 she married Oliver Goodwin. He died Aug. 22, 1987.

Goodwin was formerly active in Trinity Evangelical United Brethren Church and was a member of First United Methodist Church at the time of her death.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Goodwin, Winfield, and Larry Goodwin, Kingman; three daughters, April Finuf, Winfield, Joyce Hoyt, Mesa, Ariz., and Rosalie Painter, Spencer, Okla.; 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren.

Jean Hinegardner

Services for Iris Jean Hinegardner, 73, who died Aug. 19, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 23 at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rick Thornton officiated. Burial was in Union-Graham Cemetery.

Laura Belle Haines was the organist, and Dave Warbinton sang "In the Garden." The congregation sang "Faith of Our Fathers," "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" and "Blessed Assurance."

Casket bearers were Roger Elliott, Ned Graham, Gary, Jerry and Keith Hinegardner, Carl McCleary and Steve McCollum.

A memorial has been established with Grace United Methodist Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Samantha Cassaboom

Anna Cassaboom

Samantha Lynn Cassaboom, 2, died Aug. 17, 1999, and Anna Michelle Cassaboom, 7 months, died Aug. 18, 1999, from injuries received in an automobile accident Aug. 17.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Winfield High School auditorium. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Ronald McDonald Houses, 1110 N. Emporia, Wichita, KS 67214, and the Stuart Cassaboom Family Benefit Fund, c/o First National Bank, 900 Main, P.O. Box 545, Winfield, KS 67156.

Cochran Mortuary of Wichita is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include the girls' parents, Deana and Stuart Cassaboom, Winfield; their grandparents, Lorraine and Steve Cassaboom, Shirley and Jerry Pelz and Diana and Jerry Falke, all of Clearwater; and their great-grandparents, Ruth and Raymond Kuhns, Wichita, and Gerald Falke, Ponca City.

Hobart Mossman

BELLA VISTA, Ark. - Hobart Foster Mossman, 88, of Bella Vista, formerly of Winfield, died Aug. 22, 1999, in Bella Vista.

A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Dr. James Elliot Still will officiate. Callison-Lough Funeral Service of Rogers, Ark., is in charge of arrangements.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery at Winfield. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

A memorial has been established with Bella Vista Living Memorial Garden, 32 Basore Drive, Bella Vista, AR 72714.

Mossman was born Oct. 1, 1910, in Winfield, to Dr. Frank E. and Zoa Foster Mossman. His father was president of Southwestern College at the time.

Hobart Mossman graduated from high school in Sioux City, Iowa, and from Morningside College with a bachelor's degree in history. He attended graduate school at Columbia University and received a Master of Arts degree in history form Northwestern University. He also studied educational administration for a year at the University of Chicago. In 1949 he received an LL.D. degree from Morningside College.

In 1936 he married Betty Lu Lynn of Winfield.

Mossman taught in Kansas and Illinois public schools for six years, then served as the principal of high schools in Hinsdale, Ill., and Great Neck, N.Y. He was president of Hockaday School and Junior College in Dallas for 11 years. From 1960 to 1972 he was superintendent of schools for Locust Valley School District on Long Island, N.Y.

Mossman served as president of the Texas Association of Junior Colleges, the Southwestern Association of Independent Schools and the Chief School Administrators in Nassau County, Long Island.

He was a Rotarian for 25 years and a member of the Town and Gown Club, the civic federation of Dallas and the Dallas Child Guidance Board. He was also president of the Knife and Fork Club.

In 1975 he retired, and the Mossmans moved from Upper Brookville, N.Y., to Bella Vista. He was founder and president of the Fine Arts Association and served as chairman of the Board of Ministry at Bella Vista Community Church. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Lynn Mossman, Bella Vista; a daughter, Martha Lynn Mossman Smither, Dallas; a brother, Dr. Frank Mossman, East Lansing, Mich.; a sister, Benita Shields, Bella Vista; two granddaughters and a great-grandson.

A son, Stuart Mossman, founder of Mossman Guitars of Winfield and an early organizer of the Walnut Valley Festival, died March 2, 1999.
