Violet Adams

Violet M. "Vi" Adams, 72, of 2001 Loomis, Winfield, died Oct. 12, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Church of the Nazarene. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today.

A memorial has been established with the Church of the Nazarene. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Adams was born Oct. 1, 1927, in Carleton, Neb., to Osmer Oliver "Pat" and Edith (Cannon) Clark. She graduated from Carlton High School in 1945 and later moved to Atlantic, Iowa.

On July 8, 1953, she married Donald Adams in Maryville, Mo. They lived in Atlantic, Iowa, until moving to Udall in 1957. They moved to Oxford in 1959.

Adams was employed at J.C. Penney and later at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. She retired from the hospital during the early 1980s, and they moved to Winfield in 1989.

A member of the Church of the Nazarene, Adams was affiliated with the Oxford TOPS and the Oxford Senior Citizens.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Adams, Winfield; two sons, Gary Taylor, Winfield, and J.C. Adams, Arkansas City; three daughters, Pat Hooper, Winfield, Edie Jacobs, Arkansas City, and Lola Potucek, Oxford; 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Anna Moos

CONCORDIA, Mo. - Anna Moos, 88, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 12, 1999, at a Lutheran nursing home in Concordia.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Wallace Behrhorst will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Moos was born Feb. 26, 1911, in Schandowize, Poland, to Michael and Malene (Pastuen) Wymick.

On June 12, 1937, she married Otto Moos in Poland. They moved to Winfield from Poland in 1952.

Moos had worked in the maintenance department at St. John's College. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband on March 5, 1969, and by a daughter, Edda Holman.

Survivors include a son-in-law, Dr. Joseph Holman, Kansas City, Mo.; two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

Esther Glass

DEXTER - Esther J. Glass, 85, a longtime Dexter resident, died Oct. 13, 1999, at Beverly Health & Rehabilitation Nursing Center in Wellington.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Dexter Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Glass was born March 9, 1914, at Piedmont, to Ward Dexter and Grace Lucille (Gray) Courtney. She was raised by her maternal grandparents and attended Piedmont schools.

In 1939, she married Olaf Marion. The couple operated a chicken hatchery in Sedan during the 1940s and 1950s. He died in 1952.

On April 2, 1953, she married Walter Glass in Winfield. The couple lived in Dexter. He preceded her in death in 1977.

Glass was a member of the Dexter Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Erickson, Wellington; a stepson, Merle Glass, Tulsa; a stepdaughter, Marilyn Love, Dexter; four half-brothers, Ivan Courtney, Roy, Utah, James Courtney, Willow, Alaska, Carl Courtney, Ogden, Utah, and Donald Courtney, Denver; six half-sisters, Evelyn Hagan, Wichita, Eleanor Bush, West Point, Utah, Lois Griffith, Coalville, Utah, Dorothy McKinzey, Ogden, Utah, Marilyn Sue Woods, Citrus Heights, Calif., and Linda Moody, Ogden, Utah; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Ruth Roberts

WICHITA - Ruth Pearl (Bryngelson) Roberts, 80, of Wichita, died Oct. 12, 1999.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel. Friends can call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today.

Memorials have been established with the Veterans Affairs Chaplain Service, 5500 E. Kellogg, Wichita, KS 67218 and the American Diabetes Association, 3210 E. Douglass, Wichita, KS 67208.

Roberts was born Jan. 19, 1919, in Wichita to Ephraim and Bertha (Scott) Bryngelson.

She was a retired Wichita Eagle circulation department head clerk.

Her husband, Charles W. Roberts Sr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include four sons, C.W. Roberts Jr., Dallas Roberts and Donald Roberts, all of Wichita, and Curtis Roberts, Augusta; two daughters, Virginia Roberts, Haysville, and Patricia K. Roberts, Wichita; a brother, John Bryngelson, and a sister, Pauline Rich, both of Wichita; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Bill Wilber

OAKLEY - William Curtis "Bill" Wilber III, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 14, 1999, at Logan County Hospital, Oakley.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Pastor Bob Dalke will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday with the family to receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery.

Wilber was born Nov. 7, 1951 at Winfield, the son of William Curtis "Bill" Jr. and Virginia May (Dunbar) Wilber. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1969 and attended Southwestern College.

While living in Winfield, he was a laboratory technician at Snyder Clinic and William Newton Memorial Hospital. He moved to Oakley in 1996.

Wilber was a member of the national Organization for Laboratory Technicians and the American Contract Bridge League.

Survivors include his parents, Winfield; a sister, Lynn Bellew, Arkansas City; his fiance, Shirley Sheridan, Oakley; a son, Peter Allen Wilber; an aunt and uncle; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert Smith

Services for Robert D. Smith were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 15, 1999, at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Vocal music selections were "Go Rest High on That Mountain," performed by Vince Gill, and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Burial was in Douglass Cemetery. Casketbearers were Ken Hill, Donny Orand, Steve and Tommy Lewis and Bryan and Chuck Smith.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.

Violet Adams

Services for Violet M. "Vi" Adams were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 15, 1999, at the Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Jeff Fletcher officiated, and Leonard Canon told of family memories.

"In the Garden" was sung by Helen Phillips, and "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art" were sung by Wayne Bodkins. Carolyn Doerksen was the organist, and Kay Pedaris was the pianist.

Burial was in Highland Cemetery under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. Casket bearers were Ronnie Busby, Shawn Richardson and David and Jeff Tipton.

A memorial has been established with the church.

Lyle Peterson

ARKANSAS CITY - Lyle R. Peterson, 76, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 14, 1999, at his home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Hope Cemetery at Arkansas City. Hawks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Cerebral Palsy Foundation. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.

Peterson was born March 8, 1923, in Kaw City, Okla., to Curtis Denver and Marguerite Jane (Clennon) Peterson. On Aug. 26, 1942, he married Zelphia J. Stands in Wichita.

The Petersons lived in Wichita before moving to Geuda Springs in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army-Air Force from 1943 to 1946. The couple then moved to Arkansas City.

Peterson was a truck driver for Maurer-Neuer Rodeo Meats for 34 years until retiring in 1982.

He was a member of Crescent Lodge 133 AF&AM, Good Sams Club, Teamsters Union and Spencer-Ralston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1254.

Survivors include his wife, Zelphia Peterson, and a son, Lyle E. Peterson, both of Arkansas City; three daughters, Virginia Musson, Arkansas City, Carolyn Karvinen, Pocatello, Idaho, and Susan Dainty, El Dorado; two sisters, Marguerite Boyer, Arkansas City, and Betty Mae Dophna, California; seven grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

A son, Steven Dale Peterson, preceded him in death.

Fern Ginder

OXFORD - Fern V. Ginder, 92, of Oxford, died Oct. 15, 1999, at Riverview Manor.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 18 at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Danny Ginn officiated. Interment was in Oxford Cemetery. Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church Building Fund.

Ginder was born June 19, 1907, on a farm southwest of Wellington to Lynn A. and Inez M. (Cann) Batchelder. She graduated from Sumner County High School and attended college at Emporia. She then taught school at Home Valley, north of Dalton.

On July 5, 1930, she married Ernest "Ernie" Bussard. He died in April 1952. She later married Walter Ginder, who also preceded her in death.

Ginder graduated from Southwestern College with a bachelor's degree in education. She taught at schools in Sumner County until retiring from the Oxford school district.

Ginder was a member of the First Christian Church and Rebekah Lodge. She had been a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Loyal Women's Class.

She moved to Riverview Manor in 1990.

Survivors include two daughters, Gwendolyn Slack, Wellington, and Shirley Heisz, Lafayette, Colo.; one sister, Alma Cornelsen, Wellington; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
