Chester Bauer

HUDSON - Chester E. Bauer, 90, longtime resident of Hudson, died April 27, 2001, at his home in Hutchinson.

Services were at 10 a.m. April 30 at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hudson. The Rev. George Redington officiated. Inurnment was in Trinity Cemetery. Minnis Chapel of St. John was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Church of Christ.

Bauer was born Dec. 9, 1910, in Hudson, to Sabena (Siefkes) and Henry J. Bauer. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1929 and received a degree in elementary education from Emporia State Teachers College.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

On May 31, 1936, he married Helen Naomi Anderson in Hudson. She died Oct. 12, 1998.

Bauer was a bulk oil distributor for Hudson Oil Co. from 1933 to 1973.

He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ and a past member of both the American Legion and Eagles Lodge of Great Bend.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Thomas A. Bauer, Hutchinson; a daughter, Mary Lou Martin, Wichita; two half-brothers, Charles Bauer and Harold Bauer, both of Hudson; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Geneva Butterworth

OXFORD - Geneva E. Butterworth, 84, of Oxford, died April 28, 2001, at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Oxford Christian Church. The Rev. Danny Ginn will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hawks Memorial Chapel until 8 tonight.

Memorials have been established with Oxford Christian Church and Oxford Friendship Meals. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Butterworth was born Nov. 8, 1916, on a farm south of Oxford, to Maggie A. (Green) and Ray S. Worman. She graduated from Oxford High School.

On Nov. 28, 1934, she married Eugene J. Butterworth in Newkirk. He died Aug. 13, 1988.

A resident of Oxford most of her life, Butterworth was a nurse's aide at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center in the early 1950s. She then owned and operated Butterworth Sundries in Oxford from 1955 to 1962. After selling the business, she returned to the state hospital where she worked until her retirement in 1978.

She was a member of Oxford Christian Church and a past member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge.

Survivors include a son, Jim Butterworth, Wichita; a daughter, Shirley Slack, Oxford; a sister, Eula Conradt, Wichita; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Kathleen Kirtley

HOWARD - Kathleen Cecil Kirtley, 77, of Howard, died April 27, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Bud Fields Cemetery in Dodge, Okla. Pastor Robin Haines will officiate.

A memorial has been established with Flint Hills Assembly of God. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Kirtley was born Jan. 31, 1924, in Dodge, Okla., to Jewel Alice (Graham) and Curtis Wright. She attended elementary school in Dodge and high school in Grove, Okla.

She married Joe David Potter. The marriage later ended.

On Aug. 25, 1963, she married Lewis Scott Kirtley in Grove. They made their home in Grove where she was employed at a nursing home as a certified nurse's assistant. After her husband died Dec. 2, 1985, Kirtley remained in Grove until moving to Howard in September 1996.

She was a member of the Flint Hills Assembly of God.

Survivors include a son, Joe Potter, Choctaw, Okla; two daughters, Linda Kay Chapman, Howard, and Janet McDonald, Elk Falls; a sister, Dean Lewis, Augusta; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Eugene Lakin

GRENOLA - The Rev. Eugene Lakin, 67, of Grenola, died April 28, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Grenola United Methodist Church. Watson Funeral Home of Wichita is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established with the Grenola Public Library and the Youth Recreation Area.

Lakin was born Nov. 17, 1933, in Fall River, to Amy (Worford) and Elvin Lakin. He was raised in the Fall River area and graduated from Fall River High School in 1951.

He served four years in the Navy.

On Jan. 2, 1952, he married Shirley Hurt.

Lakin retired from Boeing in 1992. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Haysville Masonic Lodge 112 and the Scottish Rite.

Lakin was well known as a guitarist and was also a carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Lakin, Grenola; two sons, Brent Lakin, Wichita, and Brian Lakin, Tulsa, Okla.; his father, Elvin Lakin, Fall River; four brothers, LeRoy Lakin and Richard Lakin, both of El Dorado, William Lakin, Beaumont, and Ronald Lakin, Augusta; a granddaughter whom he raised, Tori Lakin, Wichita; four other grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Raymond Groene

Raymond A. Groene, 77, of 1021 E. 13th, Winfield, died May 4, 2001, at his home.

The Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery with full military honors.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until Rosary time Sunday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Name Catholic Church or Hospice Inc.

Groene was born Oct. 31, 1923, in Wadena, Minn., to Regina M. (Geoden) and Anthony J. Groene. His family moved to the Winfield area in 1928, and he graduated from Winfield High School in 1941.

Groene enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 and served during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to the Winfield area.

On Nov. 24, 1948, he married Helen Elizabeth Morgan in Winfield, and they farmed in the Rock area. He was also a foreman for Hahner Construction Co. in Wichita during that time.

In 1976 he and his wife moved to Winfield where Groene continued to work in construction for another 10 years before retiring.

He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus Council 4713.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Groene, a son, James "Matt" Groene, and a daughter, Elizabeth A. "Beth" Glantz, all of Winfield; four brothers, Francis Groene, Winfield, Bob Groene, Sand Spring, Okla., Leonard Groene, Arkansas City, and Tom Groene, Lawrence; five sisters, Loretta Werner, Wichita, Margaret Null, Rancho Cordoba, Calif., Elaine Barnthouse and Kathleen Lewis, both of Winfield, and Pat Deibel, La Porte, Texas; and four grandchildren.

A son, William Groene, preceded him in death.

Ora Reeves

Services for Ora Geneva Reeves were held at 2 p.m. May 4, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Sheila Ratzlaff officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.

Music included "In the Garden" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," performed by Norman and Diane Reeves.

Casket bearers were Dennis Mitchell, Bobby Joe Reeves, Eddie Reeves, Jeremy Reeves, Leonard Reeves Jr. and Marvin Reeves.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Irene Trigg

CEDAR VALE - H. Irene Trigg, 80, of Cedar Vale, died May 2, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Cedar Vale Baptist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Trigg was born May 29, 1920, in Cedar Vale, to Isabell (Blankenship) and Clarence Wilkinson. She was raised and educated in the Cedar Vale area.

On Oct. 19, 1937, she married Afton Trigg in Cedar Vale.

Trigg worked for Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita as an assembler as well as for several aircraft companies in California.

She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Cedar Vale.

Survivors include her husband, Afton Trigg, Cedar Vale; a son, Donald Trigg, Wichita; two daughters, Erdine Hostetler, Henderson, Nev., and Jane Hargadine, Mira Loma, Calif.; a sister, Lorena Pack, Winfield; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Betty Jo Wilson

WICHITA - Betty Jo Wilson, 72, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died May 2, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to service time Monday.

Wilson was born March 27, 1929, in Winfield, to Mary (McKeeman) and Alfred Wilson. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1947.

After high school, Wilson went to work for Winfield Laundry. She later worked at Pierce's Book Store and as a cook at St. John's College.

When her health failed, she moved to Wichita to be near family.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her cousins, Martha J. Watson, Wichita, Lucretia Peterson, Salt Lake City, Mary Lou Sheldon, Ottawa, and Maxine Row, Chanute.
