Jerry Halverstadt
Services for Jerry I. Halverstadt were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 22, 2001, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Earnest McClure officiated. Private inurnment will be at a later date.
Music included recordings of "Little Wing," by Stevie Ray Vaughn, "AB's Song," by the Marshall Tucker Band, "Go Rest High on That Mountain," by Vince Gill, and "Tears in Heaven," by Eric Clapton.
Honorary casket bearers were Don Thurber, Marty King, Joe Pingry, Dan Kennedy, Thad Hendren, Kevin Clarke, John Halverstadt and Gerald Young.
A fund has been set up with Rainbow Credit Union to help the family with funeral expenses.
Kay Lehrman
HOWARD - Eula May "Kay" Lehrman, 74, of Howard, died Aug. 23, 2001, at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Marty Dewitt will officiate. Private burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery. Zimmerman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church.
Lehrman was born April 19, 1927, in Coffeyville, to Lilly Marie (Madison) and John Wesley Nance. She attended school in Wichita.
On Jan. 3, 1945, she married Melvin Eldon Lehrman in Newton and was a homemaker. They moved from Newton to Howard in 1989.
Lehrman was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Her husband died June 10, 2000. A daughter, Rebecca Kay Lehrman, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Mark Lehrman, Howard, and Larry Lehrman, Sedan; a daughter, Sharon Hughes, Howard; a brother, Bly Eugene Nance, Fresno, Calif.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Lois Leforce
UDALL - Services for Lois Leforce were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 23, 2001, in the Udall United Methodist Church. The Revs. Cathy Holley and John Bilyeu officiated. Burial was in Udall Cemetery.
Music recordings included "Thank You," by Ray Boltz, "Angels Among Us," by Alabama, and "Go Rest High on That Mountain," by Vince Gill. Graveside music was "My Old Kentucky Home," by Carla Dill.
Casket bearers of special recognition were Kevin Gilbreath, Shebbie Godwin, Gina Hoffman and Randy Hoffman.
Honorary casket bearers were Janara Clanton, Tressa Daniels, Monesia Owen, Renae Parker, Ashley Peterson and Erin Peterson.
Casket bearers were Leforce's grandsons and great-grandsons, Drexin Clanton, Blake Porter, Britt Porter, Matthew Porter, Doug Storey, Chris Zollinger and Ryan Zollinger.
A memorial has been established with the Udall First Responders.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Roxie Gilbreath
UDALL - Services for Roxie E. Gilbreath were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 24, 2001, in Udall Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Scarth officiated. Family members sang "Amazing Grace."
Casket bearers were Kregg Gilbreath, Jerry Kissinger, Josh Roberts, Kevin Gilbreath, David Dill and Randy Hoffman.
A memorial has been established with Westview Manor Residents Council, 445 N. Westview Drive, Derby, KS 67037.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Nellie McMurry
Nellie Ivona McMurry, 90, of 1703 Poplar, Winfield, died Aug. 25, 2001, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Private burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials have been established with the First Church of the Nazarene and Lifeline. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
McMurry was born Nov. 12, 1910, in Mount Hope, to Eliza Arminda (Winegarner) and James Charles Manion. She was raised in Mount Hope and graduated from high school in 1927. She then attended Wichita Business College and after graduation worked for Porter Mortgage Co. in Wichita for a few years. She also worked at Coleman and the Sedgwick County Courthouse.
On March 25, 1942, she married Keith W. McMurry. They moved to Winfield after World War II. She went to work at Kerr's in 1970 and retired after 15 years as a sales clerk. Her husband died Jan. 25, 1996.
McMurry was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include a daughter, Micki S. Finney, Winfield; three sisters, Vauna Hunter and Berdene Brandenberger, both of Mount Hope, and Milly Harris, Wichita; and two stepgrandchildren.
Vicki Foster
ARKANSAS CITY - Vicki Lynn Foster, 49, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 25, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Hawks Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery
in rural Sedan.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Head Injury Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Foster was born April 16, 1952, in Abilene, to Rex C. and Helen Germaine (Luckie) Roe. She graduated from Wichita Southeast High School in 1970.
On July 1, 1997, she married Charles D. Foster in Arkansas City.
A homemaker, she was a member of the ABATE Motorcycle Club of Kansas and played Mrs. Santa Claus for the club for 10 years.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Foster, Arkansas City; four daughters, Jennifer Williams, Portsmouth, Va., Melani Favela and Angi Morgan, both of Winfield, and Juli Morgan, Wichita, and six grandchildren.
Florence DeWitt
EUREKA - Florence Arlone DeWitt, 83, longtime resident of Eureka, died Aug. 26, 2001, at Medicalodge in Eureka.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jefferson Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Alan Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Cresco Cemetery
south of Severy.
A memorial has been established with Medicalodge of Eureka. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
DeWitt was born Nov. 8, 1917, near Oakhill, in Ottawa County, to Minnie Myrtle (Vinzant) and Otis Bruce Burgman. She attended school in Oakhill and Herrington before moving with her family to Severy. She graduated from Severy High School.
On Dec. 19, 1935, she married Howard Ralph DeWitt in Wichita. In 1936 they moved to Wyoming where they lived until 1937 when they returned to Severy. In 1939 they moved to a farm near Eureka where they remained until returning to the Severy area in 1942. They moved to a farm near Eureka in 1957 and moved into town in 1966.
A homemaker, DeWitt was employed for many years as a loan officer.
She was a former member of the Severy Cosmos Club, Rebekah Lodge and Business and Professional Women of Eureka. She was a member of the Baptist Women's Group and Jefferson Street Baptist Church.
Her husband died Dec. 1, 2000. Her son, Howard Dean DeWitt, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Marilyn DeWitt, St. Louis; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Thomas Somers
ARKANSAS CITY - Thomas Patrick "Pat" Somers, 80, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 24, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services were at 11 a.m. Aug. 28 in Hope Cemetery. Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the Leipold Endowment Fund in care of the Valley Hope Association, P.O. Box 510, Norton, KS 67654.
Somers was born Dec. 29, 1920, in Arkansas City, to Alice Veronica (McAdam) and Roscoe James "Ross" Somers. He graduated from Arkansas City High School and attended Cowley County Community College.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
On Feb. 7, 1945, he married Maxine Gill in Norfolk, Va. She died Aug. 5, 1995.
Somers was a dairy and wheat farmer in Cowley County on the farm established by his grandfather in 1879. He retired in 1994.
He was a member of the Bulldog Investment Club and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include seven daughters, Kaye Carnes and Nancy Scott, both of Wichita, and June Stewart, Patricia Darr, Jeannie Yung, Mary Taylor and Sue Hoskins, all of Arkansas City; a sister, Marlene Myers, Arkansas City; 14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
James Turney
HAYSVILLE - James N. Turney, 76, of Haysville, died Aug. 27, 2001.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Smith Mortuary. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery
at Oatville.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials have been established with SCCS Home Healthcare and Hospice and the Arkansas City Salvation Army Building Fund.
Turney was born April 9, 1925, in Winfield, to Margaret (Neer) and Glenn E. Turney. He was raised in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1943.
In 1951 he joined Nabisco as a sales representative and worked for the company until he retired in 1986.
Survivors include his wife, VonDean Turney, Haysville; a daughter, Donna Sybrant, Arkansas City; three sons, Glenn Turney and Larry Turney, both of Arkansas City, and Steven Turney, Upland, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Marla Dorsey, Wichita, Ellen McGee, Walker, La., and Ruth Ann Rogers, Wichita; a sister, Carol Huston, Woodland Park, Colo.; and 13 grandchildren.
