Elvee Hall

Services for Elvee Hall were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 3, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Virgil French officiated, and Bill Brooks was the eulogist. Burial was in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Wellington.

Colleen Cain sang “What a Time!” and “Reach Out and Touch Someone.” Marcia Redmond sang “Jesus Loves Me” and “How Great Thou Art.” The prelude music was by Diana Ross.

Honorary casket bearers were former co-workers at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.

Casket bearers were Carl Fouch, Tracy Hall, Mike Jones, Trey Jones, Pat Schultz, Greg Willis and Jeff Willis.

A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Justin Croft

OXFORD – Justin E. Croft, 18, of Oxford, died Aug. 2, 2002, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Services were to be at 10:30 a.m. today in the Oxford High School gymnasium. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

A memorial has been established at CornerBank in Oxford. Contributions may be made through the bank or Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

Croft was born Aug. 10, 1983, in Winfield, to Marcelle (Defrezee) and Randy Croft. His grandparents, Alberta and Benny Croft, had raised him since 1986. In 2001 he graduated from Oxford High School.

He was employed by Evergreen Recycling in Oxford.

Survivors include his grandmother, Alberta Croft, Winfield; his great-grandmother, Edna Bruce, Anthony; his mother, Marcelle Defrezee, and his father, Randy Croft.

Bobbie Thiel

DOUGLASS – Bobbie D. Thiel, 65, of Douglass, a retired Boeing painter and farmer, died Aug. 3, 2002, at his home east of Douglass.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church, 405 W. 21st, Andover. Pastor Dean VonStroh will officiate. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include his wife, Chrys Thiel, Douglass; three sons, Rockie Thiel, Reno, Nev., and Bobby Thiel and Eugene Thiel, both of Ronan, Mont.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Steve Hallman

TULSA – Roy “Steve” Hallman, 41, of Tulsa, formerly of Arkansas City, died Aug. 5, 2002, at St. John's Hospital in Tulsa.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Rose Hill Cemetery at South Haven. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hallman was born April 22, 1961, the son of Don Hallman. He grew up in Arkansas City and graduated from high school in 1980.

He then joined the Army and served from 1980 to 1984. Later he worked for Safeway as a manager for several years and managed a liquor store in Tulsa.

Survivor include his father and stepmother, Don and Margaret Hallman, Arkansas City; and a sister, Debbie Ferguson, Lindsborg.

Lee Lambert

SALINA – Lee Lambert Jr., 75, of Salina, died Aug. 4, 2002.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Southern Baptist Church in Salina. Cremation has taken place.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Southern Baptist Church, Smoky Hill Rehabilitation Center or Alzheimer's Support Group. Contributions may be made through Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina, KS 67401.

Lambert was born May 26, 1927, in Brilliant, Ala.

He retired as a technical sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.

A son, Roger Lambert, died in 1999.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Lambert, and a daughter, Lisa Graves, both of Salina; a son, Gary Lambert, Valdosta, Ga.; a sister, Ethel Miles, Winfield; and seven grandchildren.

Julie Hawk

MAPLE VALLEY, Wash. – Julie Ann Hawk, 39, of Maple Valley, died Aug. 1, 2002, in Bellevue, Wash.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Multiple Sclerosis Association of King County, Wash., 753 N. 35th, Seattle, WA 98103. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Hawk was born Nov. 25, 1962, in Winfield, to Gloria B. (Marvel) and Herbert C. Hawk Jr. For over 30 years, she resided in Bellevue and Maple Valley.

Survivors include a son, Keavin Hawk, and her mother, Gloria Hawk, both of Maple Valley; and a brother, David Hawk, Kent, Wash.

Isabel Gates

Services for Isabel (Waite) Gates were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 6, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Art Hays officiated. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery at Atlanta.

Music included “In the Garden,” “How Great Thou Art” and “It Is No Secret.”

Honorary casket bearers were Dr. Harold Haskins, Lloyd Hawley, Loyd Lawrence, Ronald and Russell Whiteman and Roland Williard.

Casket bearers were Randy Buckmaster, Vernon Dennett, John Glass, Lowell Smith, Wayne Williard and Larry Womacks.

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita.

Michael Calvin

Michael S. Calvin, 50, of Winfield, died Aug. 5, 2002, at his home.

The family is arranging inurnment services for 10 a.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery.

Cremation was arranged by Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

Calvin was born on May 5, 1952, in Winfield, to Arlene F. (Case) and Wilbur E. Calvin. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1970.

On May 4, 1990, he married Kathy Eudaly in Las Vegas.

A resident of Wichita and Winfield for most of his life, Calvin worked in apartment maintenance, most recently in Winfield.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Calvin, Wichita; two stepsons, Steve Bodkins, Wichita, and Scott Bodkins, Winfield; a brother, Larry Calvin, Newkirk; and a sister, Brenda Cooley, Winfield.

Donna Scott

ARKANSAS CITY – Donna L. Scott, 72, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 6, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Arkansas City Library Book Fund for large print books. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Scott was born May 31, 1930, in Peabody, to Bernice L. (Anderson) and Henry T. Williams. She was raised in Peabody, Wellington, Nickerson and South Haven and graduated from South Haven High School in 1947. She continued her education at the cosmetology school in Arkansas City and later attended Cowley County Community College.

On Aug. 8, 1951, she married Dale D. McMillin in Wellington, and they made their home on a farm west of Arkansas City. McMillin died on July 7, 1968.

On Dec. 31, 1975, she married Douglas E. Scott in Tulsa, Okla. He died on Dec. 30, 1996.

A licensed hairdresser for 47 years, Scott owned A Donna Beauty Salon until 1983. She retired in 1993. From 1985 to 1999 she was a receptionist at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

She was a charter member of the Friends of the Public Library and a member of the Ark Shrine 12 White Shrine of Jerusalem, Victory Chapter 151 Order of Eastern Star, the women's auxiliaries of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association. She had been active as an officer and board member of Campfire Girls Inc.

Survivors include a sister, Carol Taton,

William Riggins

LAWRENCE – William Harper “Bill” Riggins, 83, of Lawrence, formerly of Severy, died Aug. 6, 2002, at Brandon Woods Retirement Center in Lawrence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Severy United Methodist Church. The Revs. Kibum Kim and Julie Shields will officiate. Hope Lodge 155 of Howard will conduct Masonic services. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Severy United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.

Riggins was born Aug. 31, 1918, in Severy, to Mabelle Olivia (Harper) and George Washington Riggins. He graduated from Severy High School in 1936.

In 1940 he graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in education.

While in college he met Ruth Helen Gilkison whom he married on July 20, 1941, near Larned.

After college, Riggins was a tool designer and draftsman for Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita. During World War II, he served with the 20th Air Force in the Pacific.

After the war, he returned to Severy to run the hardware store which had been in his family since 1914. He continued to own and operate Riggins Hardware until selling the business in 1980.

Riggins was an active member of the Severy United Methodist Church and Hope Lodge 155 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons. A community leader for many years, he retired in 1998, and he and his wife moved to Lawrence.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Riggins, and a son, Bill Riggins, both of Lawrence; two daughters, Cheri Brown, Kalispell, Mont., and Rochelle Simons, Hendersonville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Julia Coe

Julia Louise (Caton) Coe, 100, of 1211 E. 10th, Winfield, died Aug. 7, 2002, at her home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Grace Episcopal Church.

A memorial has been established with the Grace Episcopal Church Endowment Fund. Contributions may be made through the church or Miles Funeral Service.

Coe was born Dec. 20, 1901, in Winfield, to Lola (McCampbell) and Harry Aaron Caton. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1919. She attended Kansas State University.

On June 12, 1923, she married Sylvester Joy Coe in Winfield. They lived in Washington, D.C., Kansas City and Wisconsin. While in Washington, she was a buyer for Julius Garfinkel.

The couple returned to Winfield in 1974. Her husband died Dec. 20, 1985.

Coe was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. She was also involved in Phi Beta Pi, the Worthwhile Club, the Friday Book Club, Entre Nous and various bridge clubs.

A son, Michael Richard Coe, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Newton, Winfield; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
