John Carl Abbey
(Sept. 2, 1919 - Oct. 5, 2000)

John Carl Abbey, 81, Lenexa, a former La Cygne resident, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, in St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
He was born Sept. 2, 1919, in Pleasanton, the son of William John and Myrl Spence Abbey. He grew up in La Cygne.
He was a World War II veteran, serving under Gen. George Patton. He was awarded five Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.
Mr. Abbey was a sales manager for Covert Marine before retiring.
He was a Shriner for 25 years and was a 50-year lifetime member of the La Cygne Lodge No. 61. He was a member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry and the American Legion. He was a member of the Overland Park Christian Church.
His first wife of 42 years, Joyce Stephenson Abbey, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Clark Abbey; a son, Scott Abbey; a daughter, Jan Abbey; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a stepdaughter, Megan Yearout.
Private graveside services will be conducted under the direction of the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.
Memorials may be made to the Children's Transportation Fund at Abdullah Temple, 5300 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66202.

Paul W. Weber
(Aug. 14, 1928 - Oct. 5, 2000)

Paul W. Weber, 73, Linn Valley, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, in the North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Mo.
He was born Aug. 14, 1928, in Kansas City, Kan., and his parents were Frank and Mary Gulden Weber.
He and Mary Lou Short were married Oct. 19, 1957, in Kansas City, Kan. They became parents of four sons.
Mr. Weber served as a postal carrier for a time and then worked in trucking for Yellow Transit.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in La Cygne.
Mr. Weber enjoyed golf and football and was an avid reader.
Those preceding him in death included a sister and a brother.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Lou Weber of the home; four sons, Mark Weber of Kansas City, Kan., Patrick Weber of Gladstone, Mo., Paul Weber of Olathe and Matthew Weber of San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, Frank Weber of Scappoose, Ore., and Robert Weber of Blue Mound; three sisters, Marie Musks of Sun City West, Ariz., and Agnes Knipper and Bonnie Weber, both of Overland Park; and four grandchildren.
Services were held Monday in the church. Private burial of the cremains will be at a later date. Arrangements were cared for by Mangold Funeral Home in La Cygne.
Memorials may be made to the church or the American Cancer Society.

Allene M. Perkins Stewart
(Sept. 26, 1922 - Oct. 6, 2000)

Allene M. Perkins Stewart, 78, a longtime resident of Quitman, Texas, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in the home of her daughter, Janeen Myers, in Osawatomie after an extended illness.
She was born Sept. 26, 1922, in El Dorado, the daughter of William J. and Ethel Acklin Eastham. She grew up in the El Dorado area where she graduated from high school in 1939.
She and Jesse V. Perkins were married Sept. 26, 1939, and they became the parents of three children. They lived on the Perkins family farm 9 miles west of El Dorado until the death of her husband in October 1966.
She worked for the U.S. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service for 30 years, retiring as chief clerk.
She attended First Baptist Church in El Dorado until moving to Texas in 1968. She was active in the American Business Women's Association where she was honored as the American Business Woman of the year. She was also presented a "High Quality Performance" award by the U.S. government.
Others preceding her in death were two brothers and a sister.
Survivors include, in addition to her daughter, two sons, Jesse M. Perkins of Arvada, Colo., and Thomas O. Perkins of Grand Prairie, Texas; a brother, William E. Eastham of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Irene E. Ellis of Great Bend; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services were Wednesday in the Osawatomie Assembly of God Church. Services were also held in Walnut Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in El Dorado. Arrangements were by the Cremation Society of Kansas.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Olathe Medical Center, 20375 W. 151st St., Suite 405, Olathe, KS 66061.

Daniel Raymond Smith Sr.
(Oct. 31, 1948 - Oct. 3, 2000)

Daniel Raymond Smith Sr., 51, Osawatomie, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, in Olathe Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 31, 1948, in Osawatomie, the oldest child of Phyllis White and Samuel Linville. He attended Osawatomie schools and was a 1966 graduate of Osawatomie High School.
Mr. Smith served with the U.S. Air Force from 1967 until receiving an honorable discharge March 4, 1974.
He was employed by Union Pacific Railroad for 27 years.
He and Loretta Jefferson were married April 28, 1968. They became the parents of three children. Their marriage ended in divorce in May 1977.
He and Joyce Seymore were married in March 1991 and they became the parents of one child. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Smith was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church of Osawatomie.
Others preceding him in death included his parents.
Survivors include his longtime companion, Delores Smith of Osawatomie; three sons, Daniel Smith Jr. of Dallas, Texas and Justin Knight and Gavin Smith, both of Osawatomie; three daughters, Angela Clark, Latonia Smith and Leslie Anderson, all of Topeka; a stepdaughter, Chastity Seymore of Olathe; seven brothers, Donald Smith of Kansas City, Mo., Dickey Smith of Salt Lake City, Utah, Delton Smith and Bernard Smith, both of Osawatomie, Cardell Smith of Oxon Hill, Md., Phillip White of Plattsburg, Mo., and Claybourn White of Olathe; three sisters, Bernadette Elahi, Mardesia Johnson and Latonia White, all of Salt Lake City; his stepfather, Leo White of Kansas City, Mo.; and several grandchildren.
Services were Saturday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Pallbearers were Bradie Ursery, Billy Wallace, Tom Turner, Louis Harding, Gary Troutman and Ernest Anderson. Honorary pallbearers were Lester Lindsey and Hurbert Guliford. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery with full military honors.
Memorials may be made to the church.

Lee M. Hodgson
(May 5, 1910 - Oct. 7, 2000)

Lee M. Hodgson, 90, La Cygne, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, in Medicalodge of Butler, Mo.
He was born May 5, 1910, on a farm in Scott Township in Linn County, the son of Stephen Noah and Cora Dell Conrad Hodgson. His parents were farmers, well respected in their community because of their willingness to help with the betterment of the community.
Mr. Hodgson attended Pleasant Ridge School and Parker Rural High School. During his high school years, he had to quit school to work a year or two in order to have enough money to graduate, which he accomplished in 1930.
After his graduation he was a salesman, teacher, farmer and laborer.
He and Esther Grace Driskill were married May 4, 1941. They became the parents of four children. They resided on the farm where his parents had lived and he continued raising corn, wheat, chickens, cattle, hogs and sheep. He also sold Pioneer Seed Corn, Hyline Chickens, Acra Plant Runners, Kansas Security Life Insurance and Planters 2 Fertilizer.
In 1973 the Hodgsons sold their farm and moved to their present home in La Cygne.
Mr. Hodgson attended the United Methodist Church in La Cygne. He was a loving husband and father, extremely proud of his family and he enjoyed the many friends he made everywhere he went.
Those preceding him in death included five brothers, Warren Hodgson, Owen Hodgson, John Hodgson, Emmett Hodgson and Paul Hodgson.
Survivors include his wife, Esther Hodgson of the home; two daughters, Carol Loree Brobst of Beloit and Marilyn Kay Headley of Carrollton, Texas; two sons, Ray Allen Hodgson of Brandon, Fla., and James Lee Hodgson of Linn Valley; a sister, Fern Mosley of Littleton, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services were Tuesday in the church with burial in the Walnut Grove Cemetery near Centerville. Arrangements were cared for by Mangold Funeral Home in La Cygne.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Bates County, Mo., or the church.
