W.W. "BILL" CODY

W.W. "Bill" Cody, 87, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at his home in Liberal.

He was born Dec. 30, 1913, to Ream and Lelia (Dillingham) Cody in Hunt County, Texas.

He married Freddie Purkey Dec. 21, 1935. She survives.

He had been a resident of Liberal since 1997, moving here from Lefors, Texas.

He worked as a gauger with Texas Pipeline Company. He retired from there after 35 years with the company.

He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Liberal, and the First Baptist Church in Lefors, where he was ordained as a deacon in 1967. He served there as a deacon for 30 years. He was a Sunday school teacher for the young men's class for 20 years.

Other survivors include one son, Wayne Cody and wife, Jeanne, St. Louis, Mo.; one daughter, Barbara Wariner and husband, Jim, Liberal; one sister, Mattie V. Moss,

Quinlan, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Geneva Cody, Wylie, Texas, and Bessie Cody, Ennis, Texas; five grandchildren, Byron Wariner and wife, LeAnn, Cindi Louderback and husband, Mike, Mary Anne Cope, David Cody and wife, Stephanie, and Christine Grater and husband, John; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Southern Baptist Church in Liberal with the Revs. Keith Bryant and Lewis Ellis presiding.

Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, and from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

Condolences may also be sent to the family via www.kitchfuneralhome.com.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the First Southern Baptist Church, in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second Street, Liberal KS 67901.

ROY ELDON MAY

MOSCOW -- Roy Eldon "Tub" May, 71, Moscow, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita.

He was born July 30, 1930, to Roy and Bessie (Stevens) May in Moscow.

He married Shirley Davis Dec. 21, 1957, in Liberal. She survives.

He had been a lifetime resident of the Moscow community.

He was a retired farmer.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Moscow.

Other survivors include three sons, Davis May and wife, Terri, Doug May and Daryl May, all of Moscow; two daughters, Sheila Snyder and husband, Lance, Moscow, and Sharlene May, Ulysses; one sister, Cleo Barton and husband, Clem, Great Bend; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Shari May; and four sisters, Lila, Vera Turner, Madge Leonard and Maxine May.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Moscow Cemetery in Moscow with the Ministers Larry Bradford and Bill Ripley presiding.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton.

Memorials are suggested to the Emphysema Fund in care of Paul's Funeral Home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

MARCELLA B. VERMES

ULYSSES -- Marcella B. Vermes, 84, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born July 14, 1917, to George and Flosie Welch near Lake Superior in Wisconsin.

She married Edward Daniel Vermes Sept. 28, 1943, in Pleasant Hill, Ohio. He survives.

She had been a resident of Ulysses since 1989.

She was a retired civil employee of the U.S. government as a management analyst. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Order of Eastern Star, Ulysses Chapter No. 471.

Other survivors include two sons, Edward D. Vermes Jr., LaCrosse, Wis., and Joseph Robert Vermes, Annapolis, Md.; one daughter, Martha Hamilton, Florida; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Flosie.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses with the Rev. Bill Harrold presiding.

Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

The family suggests memorials to Western Prairie Care Home in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

BLANCHE M. NEILL

Blanche M. Neill, 91, Liberal, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

She was born Oct. 13, 1910, to Elgy E. and Pollie E. (Eskew) Heston in Liberal.

She married Francis W. Neill Aug. 27, 1926, in St. Johns. He died May 11, 1993.

She and her husband farmed north of Liberal for many years. They retired and moved into Liberal in 1970.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Progressive Grange No. 902, and Clover Leaf Extension Unit, where she had served as treasurer for more than 50 years.

Survivors include one brother, Raymond Heston, Liberal; five grandchildren, Linda Wyseloff, Liberal, Deborah Napier and husband, Earl, Vero Beach, Fla., Bruce Wiswell and wife, Sandra, McKinney, Texas, Russell Wiswell and wife, Jackie, Dumas, Texas, and Madelyn McKinny, Amarillo, Texas; eight great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Duane Neill; one daughter, Evelyn June Wiswell; four brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Liberal with the Rev. Stephen Saville presiding.

Burial will be at the Liberal Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today and from 8-11 a.m. Saturday at Miller Mortuary in Liberal.

BETTY KAUMP

VALLEJO, Calif. -- Betty Kaump, 70, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001 at Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo.

She was born Dec. 27, 1930, to Robert H. and Violet (Orebaugh) Carter in Dodge City.

She married Paul Sleeper.

She married Kenneth Kaump in 1958. He survives.

She attended high school in Elkhart and graduated in 1947.

She moved from Kansas to California in 1950. She was employed as a psychiatric technician for 26 years by the State of California. She retired in 1987.

She was a member of Rainbow Girls.

Other survivors include three sons, Michael Anthony Sleeper, Oregon, Kirk Carter Kaump, Vacaville, Calif., and Eric Dean Kaump, Napa, Calif.; three daughters, Melody Ann Spearman, Louisiana, Debra Lou Zinke, Novato, Calif., and Kelly Lynn Hamilton, Canyon, Calif.; two sisters, Phyllis Morgan, Guymon, Okla., and Rusty Carter, Louisiana; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; niece, Carla Morgan, Liberal; and nephew, Max Carter Morgan, Guymon.

Private services took place, and burial was held at Chapel of the Chimes in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Neptune Society of Northern California was in charge of arrangements.

ARCHIE PEASTER

MONTEZUMA -- Archie Peaster, 82, Montezuma, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

He was born June 6, 1919, to Joseph and Susie (Becker) Peaster in Gray County.

He married Esther Voth Aug. 30, 1942, in Winton, Calif. She survives.

He was a member of the Church of God In Christ Mennonite in Montezuma.

Other survivors include two sons, Larry Peaster and wife, Verna, Clayton, Wis., and Dale Peaster and wife, Sheri, Okalona, Miss.; one daughter, Gloris Buller and husband, Verle, Nettleton, Miss.; six brothers, Marvin Peaster, Brooksville, Miss., Glen Peaster and wife, Ethel, Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Leonard Peaster and wife, Darlene, Raymond Peaster and wife, Arlene, all of Winton, Calif., Homer Peaster and wife, Velda, Atwood, Calif., and Joseph Peaster Jr. and wife, Janie, Merced, Calif.; two sisters, Dorothy Bolcoa and husband, Manvel, Atwater, Calif., and Grace Faddis and husband, Jack, Maderia, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Alvin Peaster.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of God In Christ Mennonite in Montezuma.

Burial will be at North Mennonite Church Cemetery in Montezuma.

Friends may call from 2-3:30 p.m. today at Montezuma Funeral Home in Montezuma.

Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc. in care of Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

ADELINE WETMORE

MONTEZUMA -- Adeline Wetmore, 95, Montezuma, formerly of Meade, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Montezuma Funeral Home in Montezuma.
