Ruby Redd Furnish, 94, of Berry, died Friday at her home.

She was a homemaker, farmer and a member of Stringtown Christian Church, Grant County. Her husband, Earl S. Furnish, died in 1974.

Survivors include her daughters, Eileen Furnish and Frances Furnish, both of Harrison County.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home, Cynthiana. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Mary L. Montgomery Hoffman Gerwe, 82, of Latonia, died at 12:21 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a retired cashier with Walgreen Drug Stores, Latonia, member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia, and St. Vincent DePaul Society. Her first husband, Leonard Hoffman, died in 1968; her second husband, Edgar Gerwe, died in 1988.

Survivors include her son, Lawrence Hoffman of Demossville; daughters, Sarah Hoffman Gripshover and Veronica Hoffman Staley, both of Morning View; stepson, Jeff Gerwe of the country of Chile; stepdaughters, Judy Gerwe of Cincinnati and Kathy Koporec of Atlanta, Ga.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Monday at Holy Cross Church. Visitation will be from 10:45 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Memorials are suggested to St. Vincent DePaul Society, c/o Holy Cross Church, 3612 Church St., Latonia, Kentucky 41015.

Victor C. Jennings, 75, of Florence, died at 2 p.m. Thursday at his home.

He was an insurance executive with Ryder Systems, a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Fort Mitchell, and a member of the Heritage League.

Survivors include his wife, Betty M. Jennings of Florence; daughter, Cheryl Jennings of Atlanta, Ga.; sons, Jeffrey Jennings and Craig Jennings, both of Upland, Calif.; sister, LaVerne Teichman of Warsaw; and three grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Mary Morris Rocchio, 90, of Villa Hills, died at 2:30 a.m. Friday at Madonna Manor, Villa Hills.

She was a waitress for Wiggin's Restaurant, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her daughter, Dolores Joan Rocchio of Villa Hills; and sisters, Angela Schnurr of Montford Heights, Ohio, and Antoinette Loehl of Cincinnati.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tues day in the Old Chapel in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Old St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincin nati.

Myrtle Louise Romito, 79, of Alexandria, died at 1:45 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a bus driver and transportation secretary for Campbell County Schools, an employee of Basic Trust, Alexandria, and was past president of St. Mary PTC and a member of St. Mary Seniors at St. Mary Catholic Church, Alexandria. Her husband, Felix Romito, died in 1989. A son, Earl Edward Moore, died in 1994.

Survivors include her son, Anthony Romito of Alexandria; daughters, Diane Walters of Georgetown and Judith Schultz and Sandra Leuderalbert, both of Alexandria; sisters, Gwendolyn Dill of Dayton and Rebecca Matt of Independence; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Harold James Vanover, 78, of Bellevue, died at 12:40 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Cen ter South, Edgewood.

He was a disabled Army veteran of World War II. A daughter, Mary Louise Elliott, died in 1970.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Vanover of Bellevue; sons, John M. Elliott of St. Louis, Mo., and Jay Vanover of Bellevue; daughter, Rita Ann Moeller of Cin cinnati; sister, Lucille Smith of Williamsburg ; brothers, Charles Vanover of Trenton, N.J., Robert Vanover of Dallas, Texas, and W. F. Vanover and Edward Vanover, both of Williamsburg; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Mon day at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Howard C. Williams, 79, of Fort Thomas, died at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a retired paper cutter for Martin Young Inc. and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel Williams of Fort Thomas; daughter, Carole Roush of Winston-Salem, N.C.; sisters, Goldie Scholl of Newport, Viola Powell of Dayton and Ruby Wickelhaus of Highland Heights; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. John's United Church of Christ, Newport. Visita tion will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

William J. Zacharias, 61, of Fort Mitchell, died at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Cen ter South, Edgewood.

He was an electrical Engineer for General Electric, Cincinnati, a member of Fort Mitchell Baptist Church and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Hughes Zacharias of Fort Mitchell; sons, Jeffrey W. Zachari as of Chicago, Ill., and Douglas J. Zacharias of Erlanger; stepson, Roger Miller of Cincinnati; step daughter, Lana Lewis of Cincinnati; sisters, Linda Spencer of Elsmere and Rosemary Zacharias of Atlanta, Ga.; brother, Tom Zacharias of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fort Mitchell Baptist Church. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Kentucky 41014.

Lorraine Epplen, 40 years as crossing guard

To Lorraine Epplen, the idea of retiring from her position as a school crossing guard while she was still able-bodied seemed ridiculous. However, her son, Gary Epplen, didn't know that when he suggested that his 70-something mother hang up her white gloves.

"She said, 'I have a purpose in life,"' he recalled. "She said, 'These kids need me, and I'm going to get these kids across safe.' "

And Ms. Epplen did that, almost up until her death Sunday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home.

The Covington woman was 77.

Her son said she had worked until she was hospitalized in December. In all, Mrs. Epplen served 40 years as a crossing guard with the Covington Police Department.

Gary Epplen said his mother always worked at 12th and Greenup streets, taking kids to and from Holy Family Elementary. She was a neighborhood fixture, he said.

"Everybody knew her and said hello to her," said her son.

Mrs. Epplen was active in her Covington neighborhood and church. She was in charge of the local block watch, as well as the bereavement committee at St. Benedict Church, where she was a member.

Other survivors include two other sons, Joe Epplen of Cincinnati, and David Epplen of Fort Mitchell; a sister, Mildred Canfield of Fort Mitchell; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Benedict Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Tracy Michelle Argo, 31, of Taylor Mill, died at 7 a.m. Sunday at her home.

She was a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia.

Survivors include her parents, John T. Argo of Walton and Aileen Smith Argo of Taylor Mill; a brother, Michael Argo of Covington; and grandmother, Millie Argo of Owensville, Ohio.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Guilford L. Blackburn, 83, of Fort Wright, died at 10:15 p.m. Sunday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. He was a maintenance worker. A daughter, Mary Jean Blackburn, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, May Perkins Blackburn; sons, Guilford Blackburn Jr. and Larry Blackburn, both of Fort Wright; a daughter, Martha Blackburn of Florence; a brother, William Blackburn of Rising Sun, Ind.; and a sister, Janice Blackburn of Rising Sun.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to SPCA Animal Shelter, 3949 Colerain Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45223.

Rev. Maurice J. Brinker, 79, of Versailles, died at 3:55 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. He was a priest with the Diocese of Lexington. His assignments included St. Henry Church in Elsmere, St. Boniface in Ludlow and Mother of God Church in Covington. He also served on the faculty of LaSalette Academy in Covington.

Survivors include brothers, Father Paul J. Brinker of Fort Thomas, Father Louis B. Brinker of Cynthiana and Arnold Brinker of Fort Mitchell.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

He was a retired electrical engineer with Diamond International, a member of Fort Mitchell Baptist Church and an Army veteran.

Thelma T. Ebner, 83, of Warsaw, died Monday at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind. She was a homemaker and a member of Assembly of God Church, Madison. Her husband, Frank J. Ebner, died in 1989. A daughter, Phyllis Ebner, died in 1940.

She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia. She also was a musician and singer, and a teacher. Her husband, Allie Lee Jackson, a son, Allie Lee Jackson Jr., and a daughter, Marilee Dean, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Williams of Covington; and a brother, John Newton of Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
