James E. Pugh, 73, of Feds Creek, Kentucky, died Friday, July 23, 2004, at Pikeville Medical Center.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m., Monday, July 26, 2004, at the Bailey Funeral Home chapel, Elkhorn City, Kentucky

Burial will follow in the Miller cemetery at Laurel Fork, Steele, Kentucky

Visitation will be Sunday, July 25, 2004, at the funeral home chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kentucky Heart Association or Upper Grapevine Church of Christ.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home.

Henry Thompson
Henry Thompson, 61, Feds Creek, Kentucky, died Friday, July 23, 2004, at Pikeville Medical Center.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at the Bailey Funeral Home chapel, Elkhorn City, Kentucky

Burial will follow in Mt. Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Sunday, July 25, 2004, at the funeral home chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home.

Hassell Wolford

Hassell Wolford, 70, of Stopover, Kentucky, died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at the Pikeville (Kentucky) Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 8, 1933, in Pike County, Kentucky, a son of the late Willie and Rebecca Ferrell Wolford. She was a state road worker.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Wolford; his companion, Bonnie Prater; three brothers; and one sister.

Mr. Wolford is survived by four sons, Billy Gene Wolford, Kevin Wolford and Shawn Wolford, all of Stopover, and Fonso Wolford of Phelps, Kentucky; one daughter Helen Wolford of Stopover; one brother, Drewey Wolford of Meador; one sister, Mable Daniels of Lynn; seven grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchilren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., at the Stopover Freewill Baptist Church with the Revs. Larry Rife and James Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in the Wolford Family cemetery at Stopover.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 4, and Monday, July 5. Special services will be held at 7 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps, Kentucky

Doris Bevins

Doris Louise Bevins, 78, of Pikeville, Kentucky, died Friday, July 2, 2004, at the Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born in Mingo County on Nov. 23, 1925, the late Robert L. and Mavis Marie Mounts Massie. She was retired from the Internal Revenue Service, Tax Payor Services and a charter member of the Meta Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tom G. Bevins; one son, Gregory Keith Bevins; and one sister, Betty Wears.

She is survived by one son, Thomas G. (Priscilla) Bevins Jr., Burning Fork Road, Pikeville; one daughter, Barbara (Ricky) Meade of Pikeville; one daughter-in-law, Brooksy Bevins; one brother, James F. Massie of Cincinnati, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bevins will be conducted at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at the Meta Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Bent Ridge cemetery, Meta, Kentucky

Visitation will be after 7 p.m., Sunday, July 4, 2004, at the J.W. Call Funeral Home chapel on Hambley Boulevard, Pikeville. Mrs. Bevins will be moved to the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, where her body will lie in repose until services begin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the J.W. Call and Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Bobbie Clark
Bobbie Lois (Pinson) Clark, 67, of Rockhouse Road, Sidney, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at her residence.

Born January 29, 1937, in Pike County, Kentucky, to the late Thomas Pinson and Ethel Billiter Pinson, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Clark was a Christian for 24 years of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Jimmy and Lloyd Pinson; and a granddaughter, Tammy Jessie.

Surviving are her husband, Lester Clark of Sidney, Kentucky; sons, Kenneth (Teresa) Clark of Columbus, Ohio and Boyd (Lynn) Clark of Borderland, W.Va.; daughters, Shelia (David) Hensley of Borderland, W.Va., Kathryn (Harrison) Baisden of Borderland, W.Va., Debra Hill of Borderland, W.Va.; foster children, Earl and Frank Casey of Delbarton, W.Va.; brothers, Donald Lee Pinson of Sidney, Kentucky, Larry Pinson of Pikeville, Kentucky and Harry Pinson of Maher, W.Va.; sisters, Charlene Lawson of Brushy Creek, Kentucky, Shelby Maynard of Sidney, Kentucky, Betty June Davis of Maher, W.Va. and Linda Gale Smith of Orlando, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, Tina Urconis, Charlie and Tara Baisden, Christa Meece, Matthew Clark, Shane and Sabrina Barker, B.J., Daniel and Joshua Clark, Chris and Shanda Carroll and Adam Hill; six great grandchildren, Jonna and Tanner Urconis, Ryan and Madison Jessie, and Kaleigh and Kerrigan Barker.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 17, 2004, 12 noon, at Rogers Funeral Home with Rev. Harrison Baisden, her son-in-law, officiating. Burial will follow at Runyon-Maynard cemetery, Piso, Kentucky

Serving as pallbearers are Charlie Baisden, John Urconis, Kenneth Jude, B.J. Clark, Joshua Clark, Harold Sharp and Daniel Clark.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Friday at Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, with special services Friday at 7 p.m. with Rev. William Akers.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, Kentucky

Vivian Starling

Vivian M. Coleman Starling, 76, of Pikeville, Kentucky, died Sunday, July 4, 2004, at the Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born in Pike County, Kentucky, March 21, 1928, the daughter of the late Chauncey Coleman and Callie Thacker Coleman. She was a school teacher, member of the Order of the Eastern Star, active in the First Baptist Church in Blackshear, Ga., where she served as youth leader, nursery teacher and member of the Women's Baptist Group. She was also active in the Democratic Party and served as an election officer.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Middie Starling.

Mrs. Starling is survived by two brothers, Vernon Glenn (Darlene) Coleman and Charles H. (Herb) Coleman, both of Lower Pompey, Pikeville; two sisters, Geraldine (Lester) Walker of Pikeville, and Juanita Jones of Monroe, Mich.; and 17 nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home chapel, Hambley Boulevard, Pikeville, with Keith Kasarjian officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young cemetery, Chloe Road, Pikeville.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., Monday, July 5.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home.

Winford Davis
Winford Daivs, 77, of Lovely, Kentucky, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Kentucky

He was born in Martin County, Kentucky, on June 13, 1927, the son of the late Jessie and Myrtle Runyon Davis. He was a coal operator. He volunteered for the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1945.

He is survived by three sons, Don Davis of Louisa, Kentucky; Larry Davis of Chatham, Va. and Gary L. Davis of Wala Wala, Wash.; one daughter, Thelma J. Davis of Lovely; one sister, Nila Baker of Inez, Kentucky; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 25, 2004, at the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home in Warfield, Kentucky, with the Rev. Curtis Booth officiating. Burial will follow in the Davis cemetery.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Saturday, July 24, at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home.

Lewis Wolford

Lewis Wolford, 69, of Jamboree, Kentucky, passed away Monday, July 12, 2004, at the Pikeville Medical Center.

Born November 16, 1934, in Pike County, Kentucky, to the late Isiah "Bud" Wolford and Cora Blankenship Wolford, he was a coal miner and a carpenter. Mr. Wolford was of the Protestant faith and was a U.S. Army veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Wolford and a sister, Ruby Wolford.

Surviving are his son, Jonathan "Jay" Wolford (Missy) of Phelps, Kentucky; daughters, Audrey Slosser (Richard) of Lake Villa, Ill., Ruth Robinson of Round Lake, Ill., Sheri (Tom) Trotsky of Miles City, Mon., Mary (Terry) Hatfield of Sidney, Kentucky and Brenda (Oscar) Combs of Phelps; two half-sisters, Joyce Maynard and Karen Wolford both of Phelps; three sisters, Mag Estep of Phelps, Bertha Blankenship of Etna Green, Ind. and Christine Wolford of Mentone, Ind.; four grandchildren, Lewis D. Combs, Troy Robinson, Ashley R. Hatfield and Tara Robinson; and one great-grandchild, Amber.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 16, 2004, 1 p.m., at the Phelps Funeral Services Chapel with Rev. Ermel Fields and others officiating. Burial will follow at the Blankenship cemetery at Jamboree. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at 6 p.m., at the chapel with a special service being held Thursday, July 15, 2004, at 7 p.m., at the chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Service at Phelps.

David McCoy
David G. McCoy, 60, of Pinsonfork, Kentucky, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at his residence.

He was born on June 6, 1944, in Goody, Kentucky, to Esther V. Cantrell McCoy of Goody and the late Woodrow W. McCoy. He was a retired engineer with the Norfolk and Souther Railroad. He was a member of the Stone Lodge #890 F.&A. M., Stone Chapter #533 O.E.S., Stone Council #110 and BLE #610. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Edwin R. McCoy.

Mr. McCoy is survived by his wife, Linda Kay Dotson McCoy; one son, David G. (Karen) McCoy II of Sidney, Kentucky; a grandson, Brandon C. McCoy; a borther-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe and Bobbie Dotson of Williamson; a neice and nephew, Joseph and Amanda Dotson of Williamson; a great-nephew, Timmy McCoy of Goody; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, July 26, 2004, at the Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry, Kentucky, with Tommy Reed and Jerry Horn officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Kentucky

Members of the Stone Lodge #890 F.&A. M. and Special BLE #610 members will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Brandon McCoy, Joseph R. Dotson and Timothy McCoy.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Saturday, July 24, and Sunday, July 25, at the funeral home. Eastern Star services will be conducted Sunday at 7 p.m. by the Stone Chapter #533 O.E.S.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Pike County or purchase a Bible through The Gideons International.

Funeral arrangments are under the direction of the Rogers Funeral Home.

Dona Smith
Dona Smith, 94, Hardy, Kentucky, died Friday, July 23, 2004, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky

He was born in Sidney, Kentucky, on March 23, 1910, a son of the late James and Buena Morris Smith. He was a retired coal miner from the Eastern Coal Corporation and a member of the UMWA. He was a member and deacon of the Dix Fork Regular Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanette Crigger Smith, one son, Roger Clay Smith; six brothers, Hi Smith, Lacy Smith, George Smith, Stirl Smith, Ken Smith and Lee Smith; four sisters, Sadie Bevins, Lola Hunt, Etta May and Grace Brown.

Mr. Smith is survived by his second wife, Pearl Stollings Smith; one son, Edward (Joy) Smith of Huntington, W.Va.; two daughters, Patricia (Mike) Casey of Knoxville, Tenn., and Lozenna (Wendell) Mounts of Sidney; four grandchildren, Peggy Smith, Leigh Ann Smith, Tina Bryant and Jamie Mounts; four great-grandchildren, Dakota, Hannah, Alex and Clara; and a special friend, Wilmer Bogar.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., Monday, July 26, 2004, at the Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry, Kentucky, with Lacy Walters, Bobby Scott and Frank Scott officiating. Burial will follow in the Crigger cemetery, Dix Fork, Sidney.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Blackburn, Curtis Smith, Walter Bogar, Daniel Stanley, Ronnie Gannon, Ivan Thornsbury and Eddie Williamson.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Saturday, 24, and Sunday, July 25, at the funeral home with special services at 7 p.m. nightly.

Funeral arrangments are under the direction of the Rogers Funeral Home.

Lillie Owens

Lillie Mae Owens, 89, of Forest Hills, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born December 12, 1914, at Johns Creek, Kentucky, to the late George Runyans and Betsy Collins Runyans, she was a homemakers. Mrs. Owens was a member of Forest Hills First Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Earney Runyans, Bill Runyans, John Engran Runyans; sisters, Mary Maynard, Lizzie Deskins, Elva Adkins and Belva Runyans; and husband, John Owens.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary Ruth (Harold) Farley of Forest Hills; sister, Minnie Aldridge of Winchester, Kentucky; and one grandchild, Brian Thomas Farley of Forest Hills.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 16, 2004, 11 a.m., at Rogers Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Hess officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Garden, Huddy, Kentucky

Serving as pallbearers are Donnie Farley, Doug Pauley, Paul David Sammons, Eddie Higgins, Kennie May and Brian Farley.

Honorary pallbearers are Lester Barker, Paul Owens, Bill Adkins, Fred Hatfield, Nick Childers and Jerry Farley.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Rogers Funeral Home with special services Thursday at 7 p.m. with Sid Copley.
