Ennis Ray Runner
(May 21, 1923 - September 21, 2013)

Ennis Ray Runner, 90, of Richardsville, died Saturday, September 21, 2013 at his residence. Mr. Runner was born May 21, 1923, a son of the late Robert Washington Runner and Laura Hines Runner. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mildred Earline Runner and Lillie Dee Runner Kennedy.

Mr. Runner was a graduate of Richardsville High School and worked as a farmer. He was a member of Rays Branch United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Fairy Burris Runner; a son, Robert Terrell Runner (Janet); a daughter, Jennifer Runner Douglas (Mike); two sisters, Geralline Hudnall, and Mozelle Hogue (Alvin); five grandchildren, Debbie Hendrick (Brian), Donna Gray-Glenn (Rooster), Teresa Bullock (Chad), Matthew Douglas, and Daniel Douglas; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm Monday, September 23 at Johnson-Vaughn- Phelps Funeral Home and again from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, September 24 at Johnson-Vaughn- Phelps Funeral Home with burial in Oak Forest Union Church cemetery in Riverside.

Hillary Willoughby
(February 8, 1937 - September 10, 2013)

Hillary Willoughby, 76, of Bowling Green died at 1:58 pm, Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at his residence. The Warren County native was born February 8, 1937 a son of the late Ottis Willoughby and Velma Rector Willoughby. He was a graduate of Alvaton High School and member of Fairview United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Brenda Holman Willoughby of Bowling Green; three sons, Steve Willoughby and his wife, Evelyn and Kevin Willoughby and his wife, Cathy all of Bowling Green, and Kerry Willoughby and his wife, Sherry Mason-Willoughby of Frankfort, Kentucky; one brother, David Willoughby and his wife, Debbie of Bowling Green; two grandchildren, Josh Willoughby and Gabe Willoughby both of Bowling Green; one step-grandchild, Bobby Simpson and his wife, Leslie of Bowling Green. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home

Merle L. Madole
12 July 2001

WICKLIFFE -- Merle L. Madole, 85, of Wickliffe died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah. The Ballard County native retired from IBM in New York as a computer programmer after 30 years and was a member of Barlow United Methodist Church. She earned a graduate degree in business from New York University, worked at the dean's office at Berea College and taught high school for a year.

Survivors include a brother, James F. Madole of Owensboro; two nephews; and several cousins.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home chapel in Barlow. Interment will be in Wickliffe cemetery. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Allen L. Murrell
(December 28, 1930 - August 25, 2013)

Allen L. Murrell, 82, of Bowling Green passed away on Sunday, August 25 at Greenview Hospital. He is preceded in death by his brother Charles Murrell, sister Francis Coffey, and daughter Lisa Murrell. A member of Broadway United Methodist Church and retired referee, Allen enjoyed working at the Downing University Center at Western Kentucky University (WKU) candy store and attending WKU football and basketball games. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Estelle; his brother, Ronald Murrell; his son, Leslie (Susan); four grandchildren, Michael Murrell (Renee), Stephanie Stillwell (Ronnie), Felicia Lawrence (Lincoln) and Andrew Murrell and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, August 29 at Broadway United Methodist Church, with the placement of the ashes in Chandler Memorial Chapel on the campus of Western Kentucky University. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 29. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home.

John Allen Beard
(April 21, 1941 - August 15, 2013)

John Allen Beard, 72, of Bowling Green, passed away at 9:00 p.m. August 15, 2013 at Rosewood Healthcare Center.

The Hardinsburg, Kentucky native was born April 21, 1941 to the late Allen Murray Beard and Rachel Owen Beard.

Mr. Beard was a graduate of the Kentucky Military Institute, attended Western Kentucky University, and was a member and janitor at Broadway United Methodist Church for many years.

Memorial Services for Mr. Beard will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Broadway United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday at the church. Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Beard is survived by one sister; Ann Thompson and her husband Ken of Evansville, Indiana, two nieces; Margaret Seibert of Evansville, Indiana and Dr. Lynne Seibert of Atlanta, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that contributions be made to Broadway United Methodist Church, 1323 Melrose St. , Bowling Green, KY 42104

William Earl 'Dutch' Horrell

LEWISPORT -- William Earl "Dutch" Horrell, 84, of Lewisport died there Thursday, May 17, 2001, at his home. The Breckinridge County native was a member of St. Columba and a lifelong farmer.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dorothy E. Rhinerson Horrell; four daughters, Alice Bland, Jo Ann Mattingly and Sue Carol Henning, all of Hardinsburg, and Shelia Ogle of Hawesville; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pearl Brickney of Lewisport.

Services are at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Columba in Lewisport. Burial will be in Mount Calvary cemetery in Hawesville. Visitation is after 3 p.m. today and until 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Gibson & Son Funeral Home in Hawesville. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice or St. Columba Building Fund.

Charles Randall Whitaker

Charles Randall Whitaker, 54, of 823 Pennbrooke St., Owensboro, died there Friday, May 18, 2001, at his home. The Cynthiana native was an auto mechanic.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Barbara Whitaker; three sons, Charles Wayne Whitaker and Gilbert Whitaker, both at home, and Christopher Whitaker of Cynthiana; two daughters, Rebecca Sue and Melissa Royalty, both of Lexington; six grandchildren; his father, William Charles Whitaker of Cynthiana; four brothers, Glenn Whitaker of Cynthiana, Dale Whitaker of North Carolina and Attle Whitaker and Gary Whitaker, both of Middletown; two sisters, Kay Yates of Opelika, Ala., and Carolyn Vance of Cynthiana; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Owensboro Memorial Gardens, Christ Chapel. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is after noon Monday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. L.E. (Eugene) Smith
(December 13, 1921 - September 30, 2013)

L.E. (Eugene) Smith, 91, of Bowling Green, passed away at his residence on Monday, September 30, 2013. Mr. Smith was the son of the late Asher William and Elsie Snell Smith. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 49 years; Evelyn Stahl Smith, one brother; Asher William Smith, Jr., two sisters; Mildred Smith Willis and Dorothy Smith, daughter-in-law; Sandra Simpson Smith and an infant great granddaughter. He was a graduate of Hadley High School. Mr. Smith was a lifelong farmer and Agribusiness man. He was the owner of Smith's Sweet Feed Mill, Pan-American Mills and Smith's Southside Feed & Grain. He was a current member of First Baptist Church where he served as deacon. Mr. Smith also served as Sunday School Superintendant and deacon at Barren River Baptist Church for many years. He has served for 62 years as Clerk/Treasurer of the Warren Association of Baptists. He was past Warren County Soil Conservation Treasurer, board member of the Warren County Water District, president of Warren County Farm Bureau and a board member of the KY Feed and Grain Association. Survivors include his wife; Wilma Smith, a daughter; Ellen Smith Alexander (Jerry) of Bella Vista, AR, two sons; Larry Gene Smith and Billy Ray Smith both of Bowling Green, one step-son; David Sheets, Brooklyn, NY, seven grandchildren; Cindy Smith Crume (Gene), Kelly Smith (Kristin), Heather Smith Ragan (Chris), Leslie Smith Carter (Phil), Rev. Rob Alexander (Sara), Beckah Alexander Emeterio (Frank) and Josh Alexander (Kelly), twenty-one great grandchildren, three brothers-in-law; Arthur Willis, Norman Stahl (Emily) and Harold Stahl (Betty), one sister-in-law; Reba Stahl Fox and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Friday, October 4, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church and again on Saturday, October 5, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at the church. Funeral will be on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with burial to follow in Barren River Baptist Church cemetery. Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hospice of Southern Kentucky; Warren Association of Baptist; or charity of one's choice.

Marie Simpson Lesch
(February 22, 1924 - September 29, 2013)

Marie Simpson Lesch, 89, of Bowling Green passed away Sunday, September 29, 2013, at her residence. The Point, LA native was born February 22, 1924, a daughter of the late Lee Wilburn Simpson and Ila Mae Taylor Simpson. She was preceded in death by her sister, Merlee Harvill and her step-brother Ferman Pardue.

Mrs. Lesch was a graduate of Start High School and attended Northeast Louisiana Junior College, Monroe, La. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Bowling Green.

Mrs. Lesch is survived by her husband of 69 years, Gomer R. Lesch; two daughters, Connie L. Foster of Bowling Green and Nancy K. Lesch of Alexandria, Va; one grandson, Michael Thomas Foster and his wife Sarah Starkey Foster of Spring Hill, TN; one great granddaughter, Kinley Marie Foster.

Visitation is scheduled from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at First Baptist Church in Bowling Green. A private burial will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at Middle Tennessee Veterans cemetery in Nashville, TN.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church and to The Gideon International.

Mary L. Belcher

BOWLING GREEN -- Mary L. Belcher, 85, of Bowling Green died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville. She was an Auburn native.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Wayne Belcher of Louisville; a brother, Roy Junior Bumpus of Zionsville, Ind.; and two sisters, Mae Bobbett of Bowling Green and Mary Whitehead of Owensboro.

Services are at 11 a.m. today at Balley-Turner-Winkenhofer Funeral Home in Bowling Green. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery in Bowling Green. Visitation is after 8 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Richard P. 'Jack' Terry
4 July 2001

TELL CITY, Ind. -- Richard P. "Jack" Terry, 55, of Tell City died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at his home from cancer. The Perry County, Ind., native was a guard at Branchville Correctional Facility, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2939 in Tell City and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tell City and enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Linda Cronin Terry; two sons, David Terry of Grandview, Ind., and Russell Terry of Tell City; 12 grandchildren; his mother, Flora Kellems Terry of Tell City; four brothers, Andrew Terry and Eddie Terry, both of Tell City, Kenneth Terry of Birdseye, Ind., and John Terry of Chrisney, Ind.; and four sisters, Margary Loper, Sharon Williams and Anona Lawson, all of Tell City, and Ollie Hobbs of Huntingburg, Ind.

Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City chapel. Burial will be in Lilly Dale cemetery in Gatchel, Ind. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 2939. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 8 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to American Diabetes Association.

Lucy Childers Ritter
(October 6, 1932 - September 23, 2013)

Lucy Childers Ritter, 80, of Bowling Green died Sunday, September 22 at the Bowling Green Medical Center. She was born October 6, 1932, a daughter of the late Thomas Davener Childers and Iona Mae Viles Childers and was preceded in death by a sister, Rachael Susan Pendley and two infant brothers.

Mrs. Ritter was a Registered Nurse, retiring as Associate Director of the Western Kentucky University Health Service. She attended Murray State University where she completed the Diploma Program through the Owensboro-Daviess County Hospital, and she was a graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Nursing.

She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the Kiwanis Club. She volunteered at the public library and, through her church, served in the Meals, Inc. and the Food Bank Ministries.

Survivors include her husband, Donald E. "Don" Ritter of Bowling Green; two daughters, Teresa Jenkins and her husband, John, and Elizabeth "Beth" Dever all of Bowling Green; two sons, Thomas Ritter and his wife, Roseann of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Andy Ritter and his wife, Mary of Bowling Green; seven grandchildren, Amanda Champlin and her husband, Danny, Shannon Raymer, Abby Raymer, Shane Raymer, Dakota Dever, Kyle Ritter and Joseph Ritter; and two great grandchildren, Taylor and Lincoln Champlin.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church with burial in the Viles cemetery in Butler County, Kentucky. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home and again from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the First Christian Church, The American Cancer Society, Hospice of Southern Kentucky or the Kentucky-Tennessee district of Kiwanis International Foundation.

Christopher W. Tanner

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Christopher W. Tanner, 39, of Washington, D.C., died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Washington Hospital Center. The Daviess County native was a lead business systems analyst for Capital Care Insurance Co., a member of First Baptist Church in Owensboro and a graduate of Owensboro High School and Western Kentucky University.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Bibb of Macon, Ga., and Ann Cates Tanner of Owensboro; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Abner B. Cates of Henderson; a brother, Patrick Tanner of Owensboro; and two sisters, Pamela Hardy of Port Orange, Fla., and Darby Rickard of Medina, Ohio.

Services are private. There is no visitation. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Kentucky Wesleyan College, 3000 Frederica St., Owensboro, KY 42301.

Esther 'Sis' Wright
23 May 2001

Esther "Sis" Wright, 75, of Utica died Monday, May 21, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Breckinridge County native retired from General Electric Co. in Owensboro and was a member of Masonville Baptist Church. Her husband, Kenneth F. Wright, died March 21, 1991.

Survivors include two sons, Ken Wright of San Antonio and James Wright of Utica; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, William Preston of Philpot; and two sisters, Effie Edge of Philpot and Hattie McMahan of Utica.

Services are at 1 p.m. Friday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel. Burial will be in Richland Baptist cemetery in McLean County. Visitation is from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. David Ronald Brown
(November 9, 1937 - August 21, 2013)

David Ronald Brown, 75, of Bowling Green, KY, passed away on August 21. A native of Memphis, TN, David was born on November 9, 1937 to the late Charles and Carmen Brown.

David is survived by his wife Rosemary Hulshof Brown of Bowling Green, KY, and their three children: Jane Maria Brown Sullivan (John) of Nashville, TN; Becky Brown Mooney (David) of Kingsport, TN, and Patrick Thomas Brown (Susan) of Bowling Green, KY.

He is also survived by a brother Charles Phillip Brown (Rose) and a sister Joan Farino. David was so proud of his grandchildren: Ryan David Brown, Ethan Robert Brown, Meredith Emily Mooney, Claire McNeil Mooney, and Connor David Mooney. He is preceded in death by brother Lanny Brown.

David was a graduate of Memphis Catholic High School, then went on to St. Bernard Monastery and College where he was a member of the Benedictine Community for 10 years. While there, he learned Large Boiler Combustion and Design under the tutelage of the late Brother Francis Rohtkoff. After returning to Memphis to care for his ailing father, David met and married Rosemary Hulshof. David worked as a combustion technician for 30 years. Rosemary and David retired to Bowling Green, KY, in 2006, where they are members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

David was an avid bird watcher with an impressive life list. Fishing the Tennessee and Kentucky lakes and rivers brought him great joy. Other interests included working with the Holy Spirit Church division of Habitat for Humanity and photography. Over the years, David’s talent as a photographer was a gift to many in his family, church, and community.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 23, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with funeral services on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. All services will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the: David Ronald Brown Memorial Fund Holy Spirit Catholic Church 4754 Smallhouse Road Bowling Green, KY 42104.

Mary Ellen Higdon
22 July 2001

Mary Ellen Higdon, 89, of 410 West Ninth Street, Owensboro, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Tuck native retired after 42 years as a beautician and was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Joseph C. Higdon; four sons, Charles A. "Tony" Higdon and John W. Higdon, both of Owensboro, William Frederick Higdon of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Maron L. "Larry" Higdon of Island; two daughters, Mary Joellen Ivey and Mary Helena Schultz, both of Paducah; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Lorenzia Fulkerson of Owensboro; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday and after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Prayers will be said at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
