PRESTON BYRAM ALLISON

Preston Byram Allison, Ph.D., 90, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004.

Born in Ida, his parents were the late John Richard Preston Allison and Ora Byram Allison.

He received a bachelor's of arts degree from Centenary College and his masters and doctorate degrees from Louisiana State University. He completed additional graduate work at the University of Arkansas, Colorado State University and LSU.

He was a teacher at Vivian High School and a principal at Hosston High School. He was also a teacher at LSU High School. At Southeastern Louisiana University, he served as an assistant professor of education, associate professor of education, head of the Department of Education, dean of School of Education. During his years in administration, he also served as professor of education.

He retired from public education to join the faculty of Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary as professor of education. He also formed and headed the Division of Religious Education of the Seminary and was instrumental in the seminary's efforts toward accreditation and served as registrar until his retirement.

Allison served in the U.S. Army and was discharged with the rank of captain. He was a member of the Hammond Rotary Club and served as the president. He was a member emeritus of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Delta Kappa and holds a lifetime membership in the national association. He also was a member of Kappa Delta Pi. He is listed in the Who's Who in America, Outstanding Educators of America, Dictionary of International Biography, Who's Who in the United States, Who's Who in the World and Leaders in Education. He has published a number of articles in The Boardman and Louisiana Schools.

He was an ordained deacon and taught Sunday School classes in Baptist churches for many years. He also served as director of Sunday School He was a charter member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Hammond.

He is survived by his wife, Melba Bernard; his son, Kevin Richard Allison; two grandchildren; three brothers, Dr. Phillip Allison and Dr. B. Gray Allison, both of Memphis, and James E. Allison of Ida; and one sister, Dr. Betty Sue McNeese of Shreveport.

He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Melanie Kay Allison; three sisters, Jimmie Lawton, Ruth Foster and Riva Hall; and one brother, R. Alan Allison.

Visitation will be at Immanuel Baptist Church Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m.

ELISHA DEWAYNE GOLMON

INDEPENDENCE -- Elisha "Eli" "Oscar" Dewayne Golmon, 58, died at his home his home, Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004.

A native of Amite, he was a commercial engineer and U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Johnson Golmon of Independence; and his sister, Linda Golmon Braddy of Kentwood.

His parents, Elisha Merl and Nellie Mae Bennett Golmon, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be Saturday at Geisler Funeral Home, Hammond, from 10 a.m. until the funeral at noon.

Burial will be at Amite Memorial Gardens.

ELIJAH HARVEY SR.

U.S. Army veteran Elijah Harvey Sr., 82, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond.

A retired bus driver and cement Mason Local 567, he was a native of Bogalusa.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Harvey of Hammond; four daughters, Oretha Ruffin, Audrey Ricks and Betty Holland, all of Hammond, and Loretta Harvey of Orlando, Fla.; four sons, the Rev. Elijah Harvey Jr. of Greensburg, James Harvey of Amite, Andrew Harvey of Hammond and Gregory Harvey of Carrollton, Ga.; one sister, Arellia Mitchell of Los Angeles; one brother, Latimore Harvey of Hammond; 27 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Bernice Harvey; two daughters, three brothers and one grandchild.

The funeral, conducted by the Rev. Leroy Taylor , will be Sunday at Rosehill Baptist Church, Hammond, at 7:30 p.m. Dismissal will be Monday at 11 a.m., and burial will follow at Holly Gardens Cemetery, Hammond.

N.A. James Funeral Home, Hammond, is in charge.

IVY LEE JONES

AMITE -- Ivy Lee Jones, 53, a native of Amite, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at Lallie Kemp Medical Center, Independence.

Survivors include five sisters, Georgia P. Buckles of Tickfaw, Joyce M. Jones of New Orleans, Shelia Stewart of Amite, Rosemary Jones of Chicago and Lillie Jones of Liberty, Miss.; five brothers, Anthony Jones of New Orleans, Larry Jones of Covington, Ga., Arthur Jones of Monroe, Ga., Reginald Jones of Amite and Larry Jones of Liberty, Miss.; and his mother, Georgia Mae Jones of Amite.

He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Jones, and his grandparents.

Visitation will be today at Richardson Funeral Home, Amite, from 5 to 9 p.m. The Rev. Robert McCarthy will conduct the funeral Saturday at 11 a.m. McMichael AME Church.

Burial will be at Amite Memorial Garden, Amite.

FARRELL C. PHILLIPS JR.

TITUSVILLE, Fla. -- Farrell C. Phillips Jr., 64, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at Parish Medical Center, Titusville.

He was a native of Kentwood and a retired chief gunners's mate, U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Allene R. Phillips; four sisters, Ivy Phillips, Ola Phillips, Sue Landry and Mary Aguillard; and three brothers, David, Richard and Williams Phillips.

Visitation will be Saturday at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 10 a.m. until the funeral at 11.

Burial will be at New Zion Cemetery, Kentwood.

SAMUEL SPEARS

Samuel Spears, 50, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond.

Survivors include one daughter, Mekka Spears of Hammond; three sons, Dewayne Smith of Los Angeles, Rodney Lusk of Hammond and Jeffery Spears of Kileen, Texas ; two sisters, Dorothy Mae Parker of Ontario, Calif., and Joyce Marie Walker of Pasadena, Calif.

Visitation will be at N.A. James Funeral Home, Hammond, today from 1 to 4 p.m. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Martin Chapel AME Church, Independence.

Burial will be at Holly Gardens Cemetery, Hammond.

ELOISE STEPTOE

INDEPENDENCE -- Eloise Steptoe, 71, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at North Oaks Medical Center, Hammond.

She is survived by one daughter, Cassandra Butler of Independence; one sister, Lizzie Collins of New Orleans; two brothers, Dan Garman and Milton Garman, both Peoria, Ill.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Bunyon and Lubertha Garman; one daughter, Gwendolyn Tanner; two sisters, L. Thomas and Ora L. Finn; and one brother, Hilton Garman Sr.

Visitation will be Sunday at Richardson Funeral Home, Amite, from 4 to 9 p.m. The Rev. Thelma Thomas will conduct the funeral Monday at Martin Chapel AME Church, Independence, at 11 a.m.

Burial will be at Leonard Chapel Cemetery, Independence.

NICHOLAS DAVIS

Visitation is tonight from 6 to 9 at Richardson Funeral Home in Hammond for Nicholas Davis.

Davis, 22, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, as the result of an automobile accident. He was a construction worker.

Survivors include one son, Nicholas Davis of Hammond; two sisters, Naomi Davis and Miracle Davis, both of Hammond; one brother, Charles R. Davis of Hammond; his mother, Gloria Davis of Hammond; and his father, Charles Brooks of Hammond.

The Rev. Albert Carter will conduct the funeral Friday at the Tangipahoa Heritage Center, Hammond, at 11 a.m.

Burial will be at Holly Gardens Cemetery, Hammond.

VELMA C. GRAVES

AMITE -- Velma C. Graves, 70, died at her home Monday, Oct. 25, 2004.

A native of Greensburg, she is survived by her sons, the Rev. Larry Graves of Dallas, Michael Stanley, Donald and Melford Graves, all of Amite, Christopher Graves of Independence, Eric Graves of Slidell, Sylvester Graves of Birmingham, Ala., and Herbert Graves of Detroit; her daughters, Ruby Graves Carr of Amite, Levoria G. Batiste of Independence, Debra G. Gray of Slidell and Willie Mae Graves Kendricks of Detroit; her sisters, Pinkey Mae Muse and Hazel Simmons, both of Hammond, and Edna Welch of Baton Rouge; her brothers, Matthew Brown of Amite and Paul Brown of New Orleans; 31 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Her parents, Alonzo and Lovie Brown; a son, Richard Graves; and her husband, Richard Graves Sr., preceded her in death.

Visitation will be Friday at Richardson Funeral Home, Amite, from 5 to 9 p.m. The Rev. Larry Graves Sr. will conduct the funeral Saturday at noon at Emanuel Baptist Church, and burial will follow at the church cemetery.

VERNELL MARTIN

Hammond native and construction worker, Vernell Martin, 24, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, as the result of an automobile accident.

Visitation will be today at Richardson Funeral Home, Hammond, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Rev. Albert Carter will conduct the funeral Friday at the Tangipahoa Heritage Center, Hammond, at 11 a.m., and burial will follow at Holly Gardens Cemetery, Hammond.

Survivors include his two children, Zakyia and Tyler Martin, both of Hammond; his sister, Elaentra Baham of Hammond; his brothers, Lucius Baham and Donald Ray Martin, both of Hammond, and Frederick Grant of Ponchatoula; and his parents, Debra Martin Baham and George Baham, both of Hammond.
