A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and a retired employee of the Department of Labor, he died at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Summit Hospital, Baton Rouge. He was 75, a resident of Denham Springs and a native of Livingston Parish. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart, American Theater Ribbon and Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with Battle Star. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and after 8 a.m. Friday. Religious services at the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. John Edd Harper. Entombment in Greenoaks Memorial Park Mausoleum. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Emma Jane Ballard; three daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn and Kelly Gerald, Donna and Ronnie Dipuma and Annette and Frank Riley; three sons and daughters-in-law, Elton W. "Sonny" II and Cindy Ballard, Chester and Sharon Ballard and Chris and Billie Ballard; three sisters, Christine Ballard, Bernice Takacs and Josie Day; a brother, Jake Gordon Jr.; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

BOYER, MR. CLAIR C. "POPS"
Retired from military and civil service, he died at 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at his home in Baton Rouge. He was 80 and a native of Michigan. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Visiting at Baker Funeral Home chapel, 6401 Groom Road, Baker, from 1 p.m. until religious services at 3 p.m. Thursday, conducted by the Rev. John J. Boyer. Services at Shaw Funeral Home, Battle Creek, Mich., on Monday. He will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue, Mich., on Monday. Survived by his wife, Sadie D. Caldwell Boyer, Baton Rouge; a daughter, Pauline A. Parrott, Baton Rouge; a son, John J. Boyer, Big Rock, Tenn.; a sister, Lottie Howard, Battle Creek; five brothers, Ralph Boyer, Lady Lake, Fla., Arthur and Clarence Boyer, both of Battle Creek, Donald Boyer, Summerfield, Fla., and Ernie Boyer, Bellevue; six grandchildren, June Weaver, Harlan Parrott and Chester Parrott, all of Baton Rouge, Christina Boyer, Johnnie J. Boyer Jr. and Rebecca Boyer, all of Big Rock; and a great-grandchild, Johnathan Weaver, Baton Rouge. Preceded in death by parents, Fred Anthony and Clara Elizabeth Anderson Boyer; two sisters, Ella Lambert and Edith Ayers; and four brothers, Jessie, Fred, John and William Boyer. He was a member of Civil Services, VFW and First Baptist Church in Battle Creek.

CHAPMAN, IRENE SMITH
A food service worker at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, she was a resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Clinton. She died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center at age 51. Visiting at Winnfield Funeral Home, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Religious services at Beech Grove Baptist Church, Clinton, at 1 p.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. O.L. Bradford. interment in Smith Cemetery. Survived by two sons, Terrence and Auther Chapman; two sisters, Francis Smith and Josephine McCalster; five brothers, Aldo, Percy, Willie, Isaac Sr. and George Smith; five grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

CHRISS, ALBERTHA LEAGERD "BERT"
A homemaker and a resident of Baton Rouge, she died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000. She was 59 and a native of Plaquemine. Visiting at Winnfield Funeral Home, 7221 Plank Road, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and quiet time from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Religious services at New Beginning Ministries of Baton Rouge at 10 a.m. Saturday, conducted by Dr. Stella P. Righteous. interment in Winnfield Memorial Park. Survived by three daughters, Cynthia M. Chriss, Fabra Chriss Cain and Pamela Chriss Williams; two sons-in-law, William Cain and Gregory Williams; two sisters, Jacqueline Warner and Betty J. Leagerd; four brothers, Oneal Leagerd, Willard Leagerd, Milton Leagerd and wife Shelby, and Charles Leagerd and wife Virginia; a brother-in-law, Boston J. Chriss and wife Eurlie; and nine grandchildren. Preceded in death by her father, Oneal Leagerd Sr.; husband, Joseph T. Chriss; and a sister, Beatrice Paul Leagerd.

COMBS, THE REV. ROBERT BENJAMIN
Former pastor of Hollywood, Seven Star, Jerusalem, St. Matthew and St. James Baptist churches and a resident of Baton Rouge since 1969, he died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at his home. He was 86, born in Natchez, Miss. Visitation at New Light Baptist Church, 650 Blount Road, from 8 a.m. Saturday until religious services at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. H.B. Williams, pastor. interment in St. John the Baptist Church Cemetery, Tunica. Survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Joseph B. and Rose, Dennis and Vanessa, Allen B. and Ethel, the Rev. Robert B. and Shirley, Leroy P. and Barbara and Henry and Marilyn, all of Baton Rouge, and the Rev. Dr. Michael W. and Gwendolyn, Lincoln, Neb.; daughters and sons-in-law, Dollie and Thomas Kinchen and Regina and Alex Scott, all of Baton Rouge; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Robert E. and Martha N. Combs; a brother, Dennie; a sister, Rose; and wives, Hattie T. Combs and Rosa W. Combs. He was a member of Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church and the Masonic family, F&AM, Prince Hall Affiliate. Miller & Daughter Mortuary, Zachary, in charge of arrangements.

CRAWFORD, PH.D. JAMES S.
He went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at age 58, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was employed with Albemarle Corp. as a regulatory adviser in the division of health and environment. He was born March 15, 1941, in Golden Meadow. Visiting at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Visiting at Broadmoor Baptist Church from 9 a.m. until religious services at 10 a.m. Friday, conducted by Dr. John Goodwin. interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survived by his wife, Patricia Evans Crawford; mother, Lillian Crawford of Belle Chasse; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Teresa Crawford of Frisco, Texas ; a daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Todd Taunton of McKinney, Texas ; two sisters, Glenda Cox of Marrero and Lydia Patricia Crawford; two brothers, Gerald Crawford of Hammond and Billy Crawford of Belle Chasse. Preceded in death by his father, Glynn G. Crawford; and a sister, Carolyn Crawford. He was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church and served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

DUNNINGTON, JOSEPHINE DIMAGGIO
A resident and native of Tickfaw, she died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center, Independence. She was 72. Visiting was at Harry McKneely & Funeral Home, Hammond, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday. Visiting at the funeral home from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday. Religious services at Our Lady of Pompeii Catholic Church, Tickfaw, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, conducted by a Dominican priest. interment in Tickfaw Cemetery. Survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert A. "Bobby" and Marsha Newman Dunnington; four sisters, Lucy DiBenedetto, Angie DiBenedetto, Theresa Trapen and Pauline Grace Latino; a brother, Steve DiMaggio; and a grandson, David Dunnington. Survivors reside in Tickfaw. Preceded in death by her husband, Clyde B. Dunnington; parents, Phillip and Angelina Costa DiMaggio; two sisters, Mary Seely and Annie Accardo; and four brothers, Bennie, Joseph, Frank and Russell DiMaggio.

A resident of Gonzales, she died Wednesday, March 1, 2000. Arrangements are pending at Ourso Funeral Home, Gonzales.

FREIRE, F. I. SISTER MARINA
A member of the congregation of the Daughters of Jesus since 1948, she died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at St. Aloysius Convent after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 72, a resident of Baton Rouge for 42 years and a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil. She taught and was principal of St. Aloysius School for 22 years until she became the spirituality director of St. Aloysius Parish. She is survived by a sister, Maria Ignez Baccari Freire; several nieces and nephews; and many people who were brought to faith, especially those she nurtured in the Rite of Christian Initiation of adults. Visiting was at St. Aloysius Catholic Church at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, with the reception of her body and a brief vigil service. Evening prayer was at the church at 7 p.m. Wednesday, with visitation following until 8:30 p.m. Visiting at the church from 7 a.m. until funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Thursday, celebrated by the Rev. Gerald Burns, pastor of St. Aloysius Church, and concelebrated by clergy of the Diocese of Baton Rouge and visiting clergy. interment in St. George Catholic Church Cemetery. The Daughters of Jesus and St. Aloysius Parish wish to express their gratitude to Dr. Michael Rolfsen and Dr. Frederic Billings. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Memorial of the Daughters of Jesus Scholarship Fund, St. Aloysius Parish or School or to Hospice Foundation of Baton Rouge. A retired sales clerk for Lerner’s Dress Shop in Baton Rouge and Jack’s Grocery in French Settlement, she died at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, in Gonzales. She was 91 and a resident and native of French Settlement. Visiting was at Ourso Funeral Home, Gonzales, 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday. Visiting at St. Joseph Catholic Church, French Settlement, from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Thursday, celebrated by the Rev. James Kinkead. Burial in French Settlement Community Cemetery. Survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Lucille and Felix Brignac, Edith Keller, and Netty and Haines Acosta, all of French Settlement; a sister and brother-in-law, Freda and V.V. "Jack" Brignac, French Settlement; two grandchildren, Troy K. and Reggie Favaron; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by husband, Ferdinand L. Keller; parents, Andrew and Mirza Lambert Guitreau; a daughter, Carolyn Marie Keller; four sisters and six brothers; and two grandchildren, Rhonda Ann Brignac and Mark Joseph Brignac.

KORNEGAY, HEARD MARGUERITE
A retired Lafourche Parish school teacher with 42 years of service, she died at 11:23 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at River West Medical Center, Plaquemine. She received a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education at Northwestern Louisiana University and a master’s degree at LSU. She taught junior high and retired as assistant principal at Thibodaux Junior High School in Thibodaux. She was 92 and a native of Smoke Bend. Visiting at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Plaquemine, from 11 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. Thursday, celebrated by the Rev. Paul A. McDuffie. interment in Grace Memorial Park. She is survived by a sister, May Kornegay, Plaquemine; two sisters-in-law, Murrell D. Kornegay, New Roads, and Frances C. Kornegay, Houma; four nieces, Ruth Bourgeois, Plaquemine, Doris Alonzo, White Castle, Murrell Jean Jarreau, New Roads, and Jewel K. Mogan, Lubbock, Texas ; and a nephew, Merkle Kornegay Jr., Houma. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Celine Landry Kornegay; four sisters, Pearl K. Fourroux, Maud Kornegay, Ruth Kornegay and Lee K. Book; and four brothers, Issac, Eugene Jr., Joseph and Merkle B. Kornegay Sr. She was a charter and 50-year member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Anna Maria in Thibodaux, a life certified member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society for Teachers and a member of Lafourche Parish Retired Teachers Association. Wilbert Funeral Home, Plaquemine, in charge of arrangements.

LANDON, HAZEL WATSON
A retired employee of Guaranty Income Life Insurance Co. and who worked for 14 years at the State-Times until 1973, she died at 5:40 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, in The Woodlands, Texas . She was 91 and a native of Pride. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Visiting at St. James Episcopal Church from 9 a.m. until religious services at 10 a.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Fred A. Fenton. interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Laxton; a grandson, Matthew James Laxton; and a sister, Nell W. Chaney. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald H. Landon. She was a graduate of Pride High School and Baton Rouge Business College. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church and past matron of Chapter No. 163 of Order of the Eastern Star.
