Nathan G. Beard & Charlotte H. Beard

NEW ORLEANS –– Nathan G. Beard and his beloved wife, Charlotte H. Beard, residents of New Orleans for more than 50 years, both died recently within one week of each other. Their adventurous marital journey together has ended, and thankfully, they both passed from this earth to be with our Lord. Mr. Beard died at home Nov. 7, 2002, at age 95 years. Likewise, Mrs. Beard also died at home on Nov. 14, 2002, at age 87 years, with both of the Beards having passed peacefully in their sleep while near to each other and their caregivers.
Mr. Beard was born on Oct. 12, 1907 in Florida to his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jefferson Beard, and was the 12th of 18 children. Nathan moved to Louisiana at age 15 and after some brief soldiering out West, spent from 1923 to 1927 in the U.S. Navy. Following boot camp, he was stationed on the USS Orion, then the Wyoming and finally the Utah as a machinist.
Following his tour of military duty, Nathan moved back to Florida. In 1933, Nathan moved to New Orleans to work as an IRS inspector in Louisiana , Mississippi, and Texas . It was during this period of time that he learned to fly airplanes and received his private pilot’s license.
At the beginning of World War II in 1941, Mr. Beard joined the US Air Reserves, received advanced training and also received his commercial pilot’s license and flight instructor credentials. in 1944, he went on active duty in the U.S. Army serving chiefly in Alaska, Montana and Canada.
Mr. Beard served as a pilot, legal officer and a claims and investigative officer until he left the military service in 1946 to attend law school at Tulane University. In 1949, Mr. Beard was admitted to the Louisiana Bar Association and went to work as in-house counsel for what is now Exxon-Mobil Corporation.
Charlotte H. Beard was born on Nov. 16, 1914, in Eunice, then moved with her parents and siblings to Rayne. Mrs. Beard was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Holbrook and she was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Catherine (Kap) Sparks of Fort Worth, Texas , and her brother, Henry G. Holbrook, Jr., and his wife, Nettie, of Rayne. Mrs. Beard died at the same age of her mother, Lottie Lea Holbrook, and is survived by six nephews and nieces, seven grandchildren and several great-nephews and nieces.
Charlotte attended public schools until her graduation from Rayne High School in 1932. She attended and graduated from LSU in 1936 with a degree in home economics. She later received an advanced degree in library science from LSU on May 26, 1955.
Charlotte entered the U.S. Navy Waves on July 17, 1945 and was honorably discharged from active duty on July 31, 1953. She taught school in Lake Charles before returning to where she received her library science degree.
Nathan met and married Charlotte, who was then working in the Law School Library at Tulane University. Nathan courted Charlotte for 12 years before they married in 1960. Nathan’s cherished wife was referred to as “Aunt Jo” by her nieces and nephews.
Mr. Beard retired from Exxon-Mobil in 1972 to enter the private practice of law. Nathan and Charlotte became Law School Fellows of Tulane Law School in 1988. They generously supported the Tulane Law School. The Beards established a scholarship fund for the Tulane Law School which is known as the Nathan G. and Charlotte H. Beard Learning Chance Fund. The purpose of this scholarship is to give financial assistance to students who have served in the Armed Forces. Mr. Beard re-retired from the practice of law in 1995 at age 87.
Nathan and Charlotte were passionately devoted to each other throughout their entire 42-year marriage. They loved and cared for each other with generosity and mutual kindness of spirit. They lived a simple, uncluttered life, with few frills. This was evidenced by their quiet and gentle life in a small two-bedroom home with one telephone, one old 19” television, one semi-operable (ancient, of unknown vintage) Underwood typewriter, but no computer. The Beards’ only car was 17 years old and with about 18,000 miles on it, and Mr. Beard was still driving, albeit somewhat trepidatiously, during his 93rd year, with full mental facilities, until he fell and injured himself a little over a year ago.
Nathan was delightfully cheerful, optimistic, and an always praiseful partner with his wife, Charlotte. In her quiet and gentle way, Charlotte also cherished her marriage relationship with Nathan. They were both generously devoted to their nieces and nephews and other relatives. They gave unselfishly and happily to their church, the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, and their relatives on a regular basis. They were much appreciated and loved for their generosity of spirit and unselfish consideration for friends and relatives. They surely will be missed.
The Beard family members wish to express their collective thanks and appreciation for the kindness, care and devotion of each of the caregivers who attended the Beards during the last years of their lives.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Chapel of Holy Comforter, 2220 Lakeshore Drive, New Orleans, La. 70122.
The funeral services for Nathan G. and Charlotte H. Beard were at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Schoen Funeral Home in New Orleans.
