Jason Windham

Jason Drake Windham, 34, a native of Sulphur, and resident of Starks, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at his residence in Starks.

He was a member of Fields Pentecostal Church. Jason was a treasured friend to many that loved hunting, playing music and having a good time with his friends. Above all that he loved in this life nothing compared to the love he had for his family. He was a beloved husband, father and brother and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him and each life that he touched in his own special way.

He was the son of the late Ernest Windham and the late Blanche Drake Windham.

He is survived by his wife of eight years, Sandra Breaux Windham of Starks and one daughter, Haley Rose Windham of Starks; two sisters, Edith Wedin of Starks, Martha Abdel of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three brothers, Ernest Windham of Starks, Robert "Bobby" Windham and wife Ramona of Dequincy, and Gale Dooley of Deweyville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Windham; and one brother, Lawrence Windham.

The family received friends from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, and from 10 a.m. until time of service Wednesday, Jan. 28, at First Pentecostal Church in Starks.

Funeral services will be held at First Pentecostal Church at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, with the Rev. Terry Lee officiating. interment will be at Hyatt Cemetery in Fields.

Christensen Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Honore Burton

Honore Faithe “Tootsie” Burge Burton, 72, of Lake Charles died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, in a local care facility.

Ms. Burton was born in DeQuincy and has lived in Lake Charles for most of her life. She attended Central School and St. Charles Academy and was a member of Lake Charles Revival Center. She was the owner and operator of Southtowner Mobile Estates for 25 years.

Ms. Burton is survived by her son, Curt Burton and wife Ann; one grandson, all of Lake Charles; brothers, Edison Burge of New Orleans, Waddell Burge and Frances A. Dressler; and sister, Georgiann Compton, all of Lake Charles.

Her funeral was held Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Johnson Funeral Home chapel. Rev. David Holton officiated. Burial was in Highland Memory Gardens.

Harvey Boyd

Harvey Lee Boyd, 80, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, in a local hospital.

He was a native of Jonesville and had lived in Sulphur for 62 years. He worked for the Sulphur Police Department as a patrolman from 1953 to 1955. He worked for the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Department from 1955 to 1980 retiring as Chief Criminal Deputy under the administration of Sheriff H.A. "Ham" Reid, Jr.

He later returned to the Sheriff's Office and worked under Sheriff Beth Lundy and Sheriff Tony Mancuso while supervising the West-Cal substation in Sulphur until late in 2009.

He founded, owned, and operated Brimstone Services, Inc. (a security company) from 1965 to 2009. He served as President of the Gravity Drainage District #5, Ward 4, Vice-President of the Sulphur Industrial Development Board, President and on the Board of Directors of the West Calcasieu Association of Commerce, and Vice-President and on the Board of Directors of the Sulphur Rotary Club.

He attended Truth Apostolic Church in Sulphur and served as secretary and Chairman of the Church Board. He will be remembered as a faithful servant of God, his family, his church, and his community.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Georgia "Tinker" Boyd of Sulphur; two daughters, Taline Bailey and husband, Cody of Colfax, and Von D'Leigh Gully of Sulphur; one son, George Mullican and wife, Kristi of Sulphur; three brothers, Johnny Boyd of Nashville, Tennessee, Wayne Boyd and James "Buddy" Boyd, both of Winnsboro; two sisters, Maxine Mays and Carolyn Griffin, both of Winnsboro; five grandchildren, Matthew Blair, Jason Gully, Justin Gully, Kala Gully, and Morgan Mullican; three great-grandchildren, Gavin Slinker, Leighann Gully, and Kole Vidrine; and his step-mother, Gertrude "Sis" Boyd.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lee Boyd; his mother, Ethel Parker; and his brothers, Billy Boyd and Charles Boyd.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, in Truth Apostolic Church. Revs. Joe Johnson , Bob Stark, and Jake Mullican will officiate. Burial will be in Perkins Cemetery in DeQuincy under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation was held from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday and will continue from 10 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday in the church.

Bessie Howard

Bessie Mae Howard, 86, a native and resident of Starks, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at Christus St. Patrick Hospital in Lake Charles. She was a member of Calvary Apostolic Church in Starks.

Bessie will forever be remembered as an example to her family in so many ways. Bessie and her husband Warren were examples of a real life fairytale. The journey began on Nov. 23, 1943 and continued until 66 years later.

Bessie loved her family and had a bond and closeness with them, especially her beloved sister, Josephine. Bessie was a wonderful cook and the family will forever treasure the memories of her biscuits, yeast rolls, greens and red beans. She loved sewing and making new friends on her CB radio. Her CB handle was "Romeo and Juliette".

She was the daughter of the late Zyba S. Clark and the late Alice Smithhart Clark.

She is survived by her husband, Warren Howard of Starks; two sons, Clyde Howard and wife Linda of Port Neches, Tex., Willis Howard and wife Lillian of Starks; three grandchildren, Clyde Howard Jr, Derek Howard and Denise Howard, five great-grandchildren, Cade Howard, D'Lisa Howard, Wade Howard, Gunner Hooks and Alexis Howard.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Willis Clark and James Clark; two sisters, Roxanne Doyle and Josephine Ashworth.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at Calvary Apostolic Church in Starks.

Funeral service will be at Calvary Apostolic Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, with the Rev. Jeremy Shields, Rev. Darrell Orange and Rev. Herbert Bradford officiating. interment will be at Clark Cemetery in Fields.

William Stains

William Patrick Stains, 46, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 at his residence in DeQuincy. His hobbies were woodworking and cooking.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Stains; sons, Kevin Stains of Sulphur, Timothy Lee of DeQuincy, Josh Moody of Missouri, and Walter Moody of Texas ; daughters, Kaiza Stains of Texas ; Heather Moody of DeQuincy and Norma Moody of Longville; four brothers, James Elton Stains of Lunita, Curtis Stains and Dwight Stains, both of DeQuincy and Wesley Stains of Longville; four sisters, Darlene Rainwater of Georgia, Carolyn Stains, Elizabeth Rushing and Tammie Stains Moorehead, all of DeQuincy; 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 13 in Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. Visitation began Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and Saturday from 9 a.m. to service time. Burial was in Miller Annex Cemetery.

Scotty Ardoin

Scotty Ardoin, 42, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010.

He was born in Lafayette. He graduated from Starks High School in 1986 and attended Acadiana Tech in Lake Charles. He became a computer programmer and a certified welder and also worked as a construction worker until he became disabled.

He is survived by his father, Rodney Ardoin of Vinton; one brother, Rayland Ardoin of Terre Haute, Ind.; maternal grandmother, Loula Chapman of Starks; two nieces, Lasasha Ardoin of Lafayette and Jasmine Ceasar of Vinton.

He was preceded in death by mother, Mary Jean Chapman Ardoin; sister, Patsy Gail Ardoin; maternal grandfather, Felton Chapman; and paternal grandparents, Sam and Lillie Ardoin.

His funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 13, in St. Mary Baptist Church in Starks. The Rev. Joseph Chapman officiated. Burial was in Community Cemetery in DeQuincy.

Mary LaBorde

Mary Alva LaBorde, 101, formerly of Groves, Tex., died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 at Alterra Sterling House in Temple, Tex.

She was born Jan. 12, 1909 in Vinton, to Issac Sidney Caruthers and Minnie Bell Case Caruthers. She was a resident of Groves for 60 years before moving to Temple 20 years ago. She was a homemaker and member of Groves Chapter #953 Order of Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian LaBorde; and son, Bobby Lee LaBorde, Sr.

Survivors include her daughter, Jean Williams Morelock and husband, Larry of Belton, Tex.; daughter-in-law Rose Mary LaBorde of Nacogdoches, Tex.; three grandchildren and a niece, Ruby Frazier of DeQuincy.

Georgia Boyd

Georgia "Tinker" Boyd, 76, died Thursday, Apr. 15, 2010, in a local hospital.

She was a native of DeQuincy and had been a resident of Sulphur for the last 47 years. Tinker was formerly an avid bowler, having served on several bowling leagues. She enjoyed collecting dolls, cooking, and listening to gospel music. She was a charter member of Truth Apostolic Church.

Survivors include one son, George Mullican and wife, Kristi of Sulphur; two daughters, Von D'Leigh Gully of Sulphur and Taline Boyd Bailey and husband, Cody of Colfax; two brothers, Raymond "Sonny" Marcantel of Orange, Tex. and Larry Marcantel of DeQuincy; one sister, Verne Robinson of DeQuincy; five grandchildren, Jason Gully and wife, Cheree', Justin Gully, Kala Gully, Matthew Blair, and Morgan Mullican; and three great-grandchildren, Gavin Slinker, Leighann Gully, and Kole Vidrine.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Harvey Boyd; and her brother, Gene Marcantel.

Her funeral was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Apr. 19, in Truth Apostolic Church. The Revs. Jake Mullican, Bob Stark, and J. B. Kimball officiated. Burial was in Perkins Cemetery in DeQuincy under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation was from 4-10 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 a.m. until the time of service Monday, all at the church.

Charles Kelley

Charles Edward Kelley, 60, Passed away Apr. 14, 2010 in his residence.

Charles was born in Houston, Tex. and was a resident of DeQuincy. He was a Veteran of Vietnam and worked for Grey Wolf Drilling for 17 years. The last 20 years was spent on the Old River which he loved. He enjoyed Dallas Cowboys football and Astros baseball. He loved the outdoors and working with the computer.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa (Tere) Schaub Kelley of DeQuincy; two stepsons, Timothy Perkins of Dodge City, Kan. and Marcus Perkins of Sam Houston, Tex.; mother, Frankie Gilland Kelley Pharris; brother, Leslie Kelley and wife, Vicky of DeQuincy; sisters, Shirley Kelley of DeQuincy and Susan McBride and husband Bill of Oakdale; three grandchildren, John (Brother) Oliver Perkins III, Abbygale (Sister) Renee Perkins and Nicholas (Nik) Cade Perkins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Kelley; stepson, John Perkins Jr; sisters, Rhonda Kelley and Geraldine Rocka; stepfather, Odie (Doc) Pharris.

His memorial service will be at 5 p.m., Thursday, Apr. 22, at the JCE Center in DeQuincy under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.

Grace Malone

Grace Lee Malone, 88, a native and resident of Dequincy, died Thursday, Apr. 15, 2010, at Dequincy Memorial Hospital in Dequincy. She was a faithful member of First United Pentecostal Church of Dequincy for over 61 years. She had a love for the children of the Tupelo Children's Mansion and was a longtime faithful supporter.

Grace loved reading, crocheting and cooking. Her family will forever treasure the memories of her cornbread dressing and coconut pie.

Above all that she loved in this life, nothing compared to the love she had for her children and grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late Grover C. Smith and the late Lela Raspberry Smith.

She is survived by her two daughters, Anna Rose Guillory and husband, Bill and Elmira Fontenot of Dequincy; two sons, Kenneth Malone and wife, Nora, Clifford Malone and wife Nell of Dequincy; two sisters, Anna Mae Royer of Dequincy, Joyce Davenport and husband Dave of Freeport, Tex.; one brother, Grover Smith and wife, Dorothy of Dequincy; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of over 68 years, Marvin Malone; three sisters, Mildred Goodman, Mae Del Robertson and Clara Sue Smith; two grandchildren, Grace Lynn Malone and Brian Allen Fontenot; and one great-great-granddaughter, Audriey Moore.

The family received friends from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 17, at Christensen Funeral Home. Visitation resumed from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Apr. 18, at First United Pentecostal Church of Dequincy.

Funeral service was held at First United Pentecostal Church at 2 p.m. Sunday, Apr. 18. Rev T. D. Cardwell officiated. interment was in Antioch Cemetery in Edgerly.

Reginald Cooley

Reginald “Reggie” Leo Cooley, 64, of Hull, Tex. died Sunday, Apr. 11, 2010 at his residence. He was born July 14, 1945 in Longville to Leo and Ouida Lee Mitchell Cooley.

He was a former resident of Longville. Reginald was a Supervisor for eight years for Conex International Corporation of Beaumont. He also was an Oilfield worker where he started when he was 14 years of age working in fields around Batson and Liberty County. Reginald had lived in Hull since 1991 moving from Ragley.

He was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Cooley; and sister, Patricia Cooley.

He is survived by his mother, Ouida Cooley of DeQuincy; wife, Joyce Cooley of Hull; son, Reginald Leo Cooley Jr. of Arkansas; brothers, Glyn Cooley and Jerry Cooley, both of DeQuincy; sisters, Alicia Thompson of Ragley, and Regina Jackson of DeQuincy.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Apr. 17 under the care of Faith and Family Funeral Services of Batson, Tex. at Central Baptist Church. Rev. Jimmy Van Dorm officiated

Ena Fontenot

Ena Norwood Fontenot, 84, died Sunday, Apr. 18, 2010 in a local hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of the Sulphur-Carlyss area. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Sulphur.

Survivors include one daughter, Julaine Fontenot of Sulphur; three sons, Edmond Fontenot and wife, JoAnn, Sydney Fontenot and wife, Paula, all of DeQuincy, and Lee Fontenot of Carlyss; one sister, Opal Kibodeaux of Carlyss; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Fontenot.

Her funeral was held Tuesday, Apr. 20, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Arvin Harrell officiated. Burial was in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss.

Darcy Byler

Darcy Roxane Byler, 50, died Friday, June 4, 2010, in Sugarland, Tex.

Roxane was a native of Hackberry and lived in Sugarland, Tex. for two years.

Survivors include her mother, Vivian Elizabeth Byler of Hackberry; father, Lloyd Peter Byler and wife, Yvonne of Missouri City, Tex.; daughter, Annette Elizabeth Gunter of Sugarland, Tex.; stepson, Brandon Gunter of Longville; sister, Jill Byler-Harrison; and brother, Chris Byler.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Troy Byler.

Her funeral was held Tuesday, June 15, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. David Gunter officiated. Burial was in the New Hackberry Cemetery in Hackberry.
