Genevieve B. Talbott 67 of Westminster formerly of Woodbine, died Thursday July 22, 2010 at Home. She was the spouse of James Carroll Talbott. She was born August 12, 1942 in Baltimore, MD the daughter of the late Rex George Cox and late Mattie V. (Gover) Cox. She was the Co-Owner for 42 years of Golden Age Guest Home in Sykesville, MD. She was a member of the Humane Society of the United States of America. Loved Animals, Nature and Gardening. Surviving in addition to her husband are Daughter and Son-in-law Donna and John Felkner of Union Bridge, MD Daughter and Son-in-law Leisa and Brian Leppo of Sykesville, MD Son James Carroll Talbott, Jr of Westminster. Grandchildren Jordon Leppo, James Cody Talbott, Kaitlyn, Victoria, and Rene Talbott, Trevor Felkner, Skylar Felkner and Brooke Leppo. Brothers Rex E., Charles, Douglas J. and Aaron Cox, Sisters Gwendolyn Czyzia and Kathleen Schultz and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by sister Edna Louise Anthony. Hood, Carl R.
Carl Richard Hood, age 87, of Mt. Airy, MD, died Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at the Dove House in Westminster, MD. He was born May 10, 1923 in Mt. Airy, MD the son of the late Archie C. Hood and late Viola Owings Hood. He was the husband of the late Wilma V. Hood (nee Etzler). He was a graduate of Mt. Airy High School. He was a member of Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, Mt. Airy and He was a self-employed construction worker. He was the father of Portia Ann Hood of Mt. Airy, Vicki Lynn and Denis Hodgkins of Mt. Airy. He was the grandfather of Ashley Victoria Hodgkins and Andrew Carl Hodgkins. Friends may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School) on Thursday from 6-9 PM. Rice, Grace M.
Grace Marie Wright Rice (nee Grimes), age 90, of Mt. Airy, died Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at Brinton Woods Health Care Center, Sykesville, MD. She was born June 19, 1920 in Carroll County, Winfield, MD on Braddock Road. She was the daughter of the late William Dorsey Grimes and the late Ella Mae Pickett Grimes on Braddock Road. She was the wife of the late Frederick Talbert Wright and the late Kenneth Hedges Rice. Grace worked at Grifs Opera House as a presser; cigar factory in Frederick; Hamilton’s in Baltimore making dental equipment and Springfield Hospital Center in dietary. She was the mother of Betty M. Wright Carey & husband Jack E. Carey of Taylorsville, Robert L. Wright & Companion James Knight of Silver Run, Augustus T. Wright and wife Peggy Shaffer Wright of Surfside Beach, S.C. and LeRoy A. Wright and companion Michael Yurko of Taylorsville. Sister of Effie I. Grimes Fisher of Alabama, Ernest Monroe Grimes of Finksburg. Predeceased by Sister Ethel M. Grimes Holland, brothers Charles Edward, Roy William, Walter E., Harold C.C., Frank “Smokey” and Arthur Harman Grimes. Also survived by 3 granddaughters; Jacqueline D. Carey Graham of Taylorsville, Shelly Wright of Hampstead and Danna Carbaugh of Chambersburg, PA; great grandchildren Rachael A. Graham of Taylorsville, Mark Stanton of Hampstead, Jessica Stanton of Hampstead, and Skyler Carbaugh of Chambersburg, PA. Also survived step children Dorothy Unverzagt and the late Donald E. Rice. Hayden, Elizabeth J.
Elizabeth Jean Hayden (nee Skinner), age 81, of Sykesville, died Tuesday August 3, 2010 at Northwest Hospital Seasons Hospice in Randallstown. She was born December 3, 1928 in Waterville, Maine the daughter of the late Walter A. Skinner and the late Ann Higgins Skinner. She was an administrator assistant for University of Maryland. She was a member of the Gadabouts and she loved gardening. She was the mother of Ann E. Hayden and Bill Susa of Burkittsville, MD, Susan and David Blessing of Sykesville and Jean and Neil Gentry of Hamilton, VA. She was the sister of Lois Hamm of NY and Marion and Bill Coburn of NY. She was the grandmother of Steven Dozier, Jennifer and Brent Horter, Kim Dozier, Kate Gentry and Jessica Gentry. Great grandmother of Kylie and Tyler Horter and Zachary and Troy Blessing. Memorial Funeral Mass (Liturgy) will be held Saturday August 7, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, (rt.26 & rt.75), 9201 Church Street, Libertytown, MD with Fr. Jason Worley officiating. Interment Private.

Griffith, James E.
James E. Griffith, age 77, of Woodbine, died Thursday August 5, 2010 at his home. He was born December 18, 1932 in Brooklyn, MD, the son of the late Raymond Griffith and the late Stella Norwood Griffith. He was a self-employed cabinet maker. He was a veteran in the Army. He was a member of the Carriage Association of America, League of MD Horseman, Rose Hill Carriage Society, Gettysburg Moose, Free Wheelers Driving Group and the Littlestown Eagles. He was the husband of Doris “Dori” Griffith of PA. He was the father of Cindy Bode of Westminster, Chris Sasada of Lecanto, FL, Patty Hopkins of Beverly Hills, FL, Dan Griffith of Lecanto, FL and Jimmy Griffith of Woodbine, MD. Also survived by two stepsons Eddie Ziranski of Damascus and Billy Ziranski of Ohio, and 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School) with the Rev. Wallace “Bud” Lusk and Rev. Will Ellis officiating. Interment will be in Morgan Chapel U.M. Church cemetery, Woodbine, MD. Friends may call at the Griffith’s Carriage House, 1720 Gillis Road, Woodbine on Monday August 9, 2010 from 3-5 & 7-9 PM. Murphy, E. Yates
E. Yates Murphy, age 67, of Mt. Airy, died Thursday, August 5, 2010 at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster. He was born March 24, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Theresa Esther Nemethvargo Derreth and the late Murray Edwin Murphy. He was the former husband of the late Sue Murphy. He was the father of Teri and Bill Houp of Sykesville, Lisa Murphy Sill of Mt. Airy, Sheri and Ricky Rice of Sykesville and Dawn and Brian Halley of Lansdowne, MD. Brother of Bill and Jim Derreth of Baltimore and the late Lora Murphy Stem. Also survived by 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was and self-employed construction worker, had his own excavating business, also had a catering business, loved to go to Vegas, loved hunting and watching western movies. He was a Past Commander and Charter member of the Sons of the American Legion Mt. Airy Post 191 for 33 years. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School). Interment Lake View Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA on Monday from 3-5 & 7-9 PM.; where there will also be American Legion Mt. Ronald “Ronnie” Eugene Fritz, age 51, of Westminster, MD, died Friday, August 13, 2010 at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, MD. He was born March 10, 1959 in Baltimore, MD the son of Dorothy L. Fritz (nee Walker) of Westminster and the late Roland “Sonny” L. Fritz, Sr. He was a mechanic for Carroll County Roads Department. He loved his Harley and time at his cabin in the mountains and enjoyed outside activities. He was a member of the Winfield Vol. Fire Company. He was the father of Dawn Elizabeth Fritz and Tina Marie Fritz. He was the grandfather of Desmond Dwight Smith. He was the brother of the late Roland “Butch” L. Fritz, Jr. Friends may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 W. Stem, Sr., Richard W.
Richard William Stem, Sr., age 67, of Woodbine, died Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, MD. He was born March 10, 1943 in Westminster, MD the son of the late Aubrey Joseph Stem, Jr. and the late Edith Case Stem. He was semi-retired truck driver for Emory N. Stull, Inc.; he was a life member of the Elks, member of Loyal Order of Moose, and Fraternal Order of Eagles and a former member of Winfield Vol. Fire Company. He enjoyed golf, traveling, NASCAR, watching football, and spending time with family and friends and sitting in the race car shop; and a member of the Truck Drivers and Helpers Local Union #355. He was the loving husband of Sharon E. Stem (nee Carpenter). He was the loving father of- son-Richard William Stem, Jr. and wife Kelly Stem, Step-son- Daniel Carpenter, and daughter-Stacy Stem Hurley and husband Scott Hurley. Loving grandfather of Stevie and husband Brett Geiman, Dalton and Chance Stem, and Cameron and Cooper Hurley. Loving son in law of Edna Burkhart Carpenter. Loving brother of Joseph Stem and wife Peggy, Thomas Stem and wife Lisa, Michael Stem and wife Carolyn, and sister Susie Strawsburg and husband Steve and the late Paul Stem. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and brother and sister in laws Ray Carpenter and wife Dorothy and Suzette Dotterer and husband Dwight, and special friends Buddy, Missy and Max. She was the spouse of the late Jerry Lee Richmond, Sr. She was born November 11, 1961 in Baltimore, MD the daughter of the late Jerry Wade Franks, Sr. and Bonnie Sue Steele Franks. She was the Co-owner of Jerry’s Trophies in Mt. Airy, A former member of the Mt. Airy Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Professional Photographer Association. Surviving are Son and Daughter-in-law Michael Lee and Nikki Porter of Poolesville, Daughter Nicole Miranda Richmond of Mt. Airy, Son Owen Kaine Richmond of Mt. Airy, Brother Jerry Wade Franks, Jr. of Mt. Airy, Sister: Deborah Mae Franks-Earls of Mt. Airy. Brother John Wayne Franks, Sr. of Silver Run. Granddaughter Kayley Morgan Porter. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday August 19, 2010 11 AM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD 21784. Interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery, Mt. Airy, MD The Family will receive friends on Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home. Flaherty, Virginia
Virginia Purvis Flaherty, women’s and feature page editor of the Baltimore Sun, age 81, of Woodbine, died Tuesday, August 17, 2010, died at her home near Daisy, Maryland. She was born July 20, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA the daughter of the late James Purvis and the late Clara Craddock Purvis. She was the wife of Hugh E. Flaherty. Ms Flaherty served at the editor of the Sun’s women’s and feature page from 1954 until 1960 when she married former Sun reporter Hugh E. Flaherty and started raising a family. Prior to joining the Sun, she worked for two magazines- Etude and the Ladies Home Journal- in Philadelphia after her graduation from the University of Pennsylvania with highest honors in 1952. In the 1960’s she worked as a volunteer for Governor Raymond P. Shafer during his term of office in Pennsylvania from 1967 until 1971, She was active in efforts to establish public education programs for learning disabled children, including establishment of the New Day School in Harrisburg and passage of the first public programs for children with learning disabilities. She was a former member of the vestry at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Poplar Springs. Ms Flaherty is survived by her husband, Hugh, three sons, David and Christopher of Woodbine and Brendan of Sykesville; two daughters-in-law, Dianne and Mary Flaherty, seven grandchildren and a great granddaughter. Funeral Services are private. Memorial Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1393 Progress Way, Suite 908, Eldersburg, MD 21784.
