March 30, 2000

Reba Elizabeth Wharton of Golts, Md. died Thursday March 30, 2000 in the Kent & Queen Annes Hospital, Chestertown, Md. of heart failure. She was 97.

Mrs. Wharton was born in Queen Annes Co. Md. the daughter of the late George M. and Julia McGinnes VanSant. Mrs. Wharton was a School teacher for many years teaching English and spent the last years of her teaching career in the Middletown, De. School District, retiring in 1967. Mrs. Wharton was a 1923 graduate of Western Maryland College, and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Mrs. Wharton returned for her 70th. Class reuion in 1993 and was very pleased that she was the only member of her class walking without the help of a cane or walker. Mrs. Wharton enjoyed gardening and loved to read. She enjoyed spending time with nature, and enjoying the outdoors. Mrs. Wharton served as the Assit. Postmaster in Golts, for many years.

Mrs, Wharton’s husband W. Gilbert Wharton preceeded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one brother, three sisters and a grandson.

She is survived by 2 sons, Gilbert VanSant Wharton of Wilmington, De., and David Kent Wharton of Golts, Md.; 2 daughters, Reba Julia Blackiston of Port Isabel, TX and Carol Mary Sethmann of Harrisonburg, Va.; 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Services will be held Tuesday April 4, 2000 at 1pm at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md. 21651. Friends may call Evening from 7-9pm. Rev. Rob Townsend will officate.

Interment will in the Townsend Cemetery, Townsend, De.

In Lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 711 Chestertown, Md.

March 28, 2000

Dorothy Louise Hanson of Hartley, De., died on March 28, 2000 at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, De. She was 80.

She was born on February 17, 1920 the daughter of the late Carroll and Bertha Cohey. She married Orville Layton, they made their home in Fairlee, Md. Mr. Layton predeceased his wife in 1969. For the majority of her life Mrs. Hanson was a homemaker. She remarried to Floyd M. Hanson on August 18, 1984, they lived in a number of places before settling in Hartley, De. in 1989. Mrs. Hanson was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dover Delaware. She enjoyed crocheting and crafts. She also cherished the time spent with family.

In addition to her husband she is survived by 2 sons: Sonny Layton of Chestertown, Md. and Roger Layton of Bridgeville, De., a stepson: Van Holmes Hanson of Columbus, S.C.; a stepdaughter: Christina Bocock of New Richmond, Wis.; 2 sisters: Lucille Knotts of Dover, De. and Peggy Letterman of Felton, De. Four grandchildren: Lee, Michael, and Jeff Layton of Chestertown, Md. and Dale Layton of Glen Burnie, Md. along with 5 step-grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday March 31, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church Washington Ave. Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Chester Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Maryland 560-2120, 1840 York Road Timonium, Md. or St. John’s Lutheran Church 113 Lotus Street Dover, De. 19901.

March 25, 2000

Thomas Kirkwood Lansinger of Stevensville, MD. died Saturday March 25, 2000 at his home. He was 75.

Born on November 28, 1924 in Baltimore, MD. He was the son of the late Robert and Francis Lansinger. He attended school in Baltimore, MD. and graduated from St. Joseph’s in Baltimore. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Core and served during WW II. Returning home Mr. Lansinger married Regina G. Smith on October 31, 1946. He then began his career with C & P telephone Company as an Engineer and working in the Baltimore area and later to the Eastern Shore. He moved to the Eastern Shore in Stevensville in 1963.

He was a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, MD. and the Pioneers Club. He is survived by his wife Regina G., Lansinger of Stevensville, MD.

Services will be private.

Clifford Donald Faulkner of Easton died at his home on Saturday, March 25, 2000. He was 74.

Born in Salisbury, MD on March 28, 1925, he was the son of the late Clifford C. and Eva Estelle Tilghman Faulkner. After graduating from St. Michaels High School he attended Goldey Beacom College in Wilmington, DE. In 1944 he joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he served as a Field Artillery Crewman during World War II. Following his release from active duty in April 1946 he managed the A.N. Faulkner and Company, a food processing plant and later worked for the DeCecco Company of Rhodesdale until his retirement in 1987.

He was a former member of Tilghman United Methodist Church and a member of E.E. Street Memorial Post #5118, V.F.W., Easton.

In 1947 he married the former Mildred Phillips and she died in January 1993.

Mr. Faulkner is survived by three daughters, Sharon Michell of Charlottesville, VA, Linda Henckel of St. Michaels and Brenda Boda of Salisbury, 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a son, Clifford D. Faulkner, Jr. who died in 1965 and a sister, Doris Faulkner who died in 1991.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton at 3:00.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7-9 PM and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private.

March 23, 2000

Dorothy Neary Muldowney died on Thursday, March 23, 2000 at the William Hill Manor in Easton. She was 86.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 16, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Susan Devlin Neary. After graduating from the Boston Latin Girls School, she received her teaching degree from the Boston Teachers College, now University of Massachusetts, in 1935. She taught for a few years in Brookline, MA before marrying Francis William Muldowney, Jr. in 1937. She lived in Brookline until 1986 when she moved to South Pasadena, FL. In 1994, she moved to Easton. Mr. Muldowney died in June 1998.

She was a member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Chestnut Hill and the Brookline Garden Club, both in Massachusetts.

Mrs. Muldowney is survived by a daughter, Susan Bullock of Easton; a son, Francis W. Muldowney, III of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services and burial will be private.

March 22, 2000

Jane Paige Holden of Millington, died on Wednesday, March 22, 2000 in her home of heart failure. She was 51 years old.

Mrs. Holden was born in Still Pond, MD; she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Mary Hickman Nicholson. She was a homemaker. In her early years Mrs. Holden enjoyed roller-skating at Worton Roller Rink. For many years she has enjoyed making crafts and most recently she has enjoyed working on her computer. She was a member of the Double Creek United Methodist Church, near McGinnis Corner.

Mrs. Holden is survived by her husband of 32 years Wilford H. Holden; 2 sons Donald H. Holden of Millington, MD and Ronald H. Holden of Rock Hall, MD; a step son William Holden, brother Benjamin Nicholson of Still Pond, MD; 2 sisters Doris Cannon of Price, MD and Mary Walbert of Winsted, CN; 2 grandchildren, Amanda Renay Holden and Ronald Holden. Mrs. Holden was predeceased by 3 brothers James, John and Billy Nicholson.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 27, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. from the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 370 West Cypress Street, Millington, MD. Friends and family may call one hour prior.

Interment will be in the Still Pond Cemetery, Still Pond, MD.

March 20, 2000

Annette Lillian Glenn Spencer of Rock Hall, Md. died on March 20, 2000 at Magnolia Hall Nursing Home in Chestertown, Md. She was 91.

She was born on January 14, 1909 on Eastern Neck Island in Rock Hall, Md. the daughter of the late Frank A. and Clara Snead Sappington. Mrs. Spencer lived in many places throughout the United States moving back to Rock Hall, Md. in the late 1960’s. 2 husbands preceded her in death. She loved shopping and was an avid antique collector, she also loved animals. Mrs. Spencer is survived by one son Albert Loetell and his wife Phyllis of Pittsgrove, N.J., one sister: Clara Gaddess of Baltimore, Md., three grandchildren: Linda Loetell of Tampa, Fla., Debra Hitchcock of Decatur, Ga., and Carleton Loetell of Millville, N.J., four great grandchildren: Mickey and Gregory Giordano of Tampa, Fla. and Janie and Cody Hitchcock of Decatur, Ga. Plus four nephews in the Sappington Family.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday March 23, 2000 at 1:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Route 20 Rock Hall, Md. where relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service (12-1). Interment will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Rock Hall, Md. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Rock Hall Vol. Fire Dept. P.O. Box 577 Rock Hall, Md. 21661.

A. Vada Elburn of Lexington Park, MD formerly of Wye Mills, MD. died at her home on Monday, March 20, 2000. She was 61.

Born on September 12, 1938 in South Webster, OH, the daughter of Ida Mae Chaffin White and the late Louis White. She attended school in Baltimore, MD. She married Thomas Franklin Elburn on June 8, 1958. They resided in Stevensville, MD, where Mrs. Elburn was a homemaker and they later moved to Wye Mills, MD. Mr. Elburn predeceased her on November 26, 1995. She later moved to Lexington Park, MD to reside with her family. She was a member of the Grasonville Church of God in Grasonville, MD and was active in the Grasonville Senior Center.

Ms. Elburn is survived: by her mother, Ida Mae Gatton of Pasadena, MD, three sons, Joseph D. Elburn of Grasonville, MD, Thomas F. Elburn Jr. of Prince Frederick, MD and Robert Elburn of Cordova, MD, three daughters, Doris B. Elburn of Lexington Park, MD, Katherine Ann Elburn Cammorn of Leonardtown, MD and Theresa Elburn of Oklahoma, and two brothers, Wilbur White of Pasadena, MD and Frank Bostwick of Oklahoma, as well as ten grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2000 at 11 AM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD. Friends and family may call on Wednesday, March 22, 2000 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in Stevensville Cemetery.

Manuel Carrion Martinez of Cordova died on Monday, March 20, 2000 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. He was 48.

Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico on July 15, 1951, he was the son of Dolores Martinez Galarza and Manuel Carrion Velez.At age seventeen he moved to the continental U.S. and eventually settled in Trappe.He worked for the Trappe Packing Company for about ten years before going to work for the Charwill Cannery in Trappe in 1971.In 1982, he moved to Cordova.Due to illness, he retired in 1999.

Mr. Martinez is survived by his wife, the former Deborah Lee Morris of Cordova; a son, Manuel Martinez Camper of Centreville; a step-son, Ronald Meredith, Jr. of Preston; a step-daughter, JoAnn Ewing of Greensboro, one grandchild and three step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Thursday, March 23, 2000 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

March 19,2000

G. Edward Kerr Jr. of Ocean City, Maryland died March 19,2000 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md. He was 75.

Born on October 7,1924 in Baltimore, Md. the son of the late G. Edward Kerr Sr. and Theresa Corbitt Kerr. He attended Calvert Hall High School in Baltimore, Md. Mr. Kerr then entered the United States Army, during WWII. After the war Mr. Kerr went into the meat cutting business with his father at Hollins Market in Baltimore City, Md. Mr. Kerr Married E. Audrey Kerr in 1948 where the resided in Cattonsville, Md. Then after retiring they moved to Stevensville, Md. Mr. Kerr was an active member, Past Commander, With the American Legion Post 278. He was also a member of the Grasonville Moose Lodge, Ocean City Elks Lodge and St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester,Md.In 1993 he and his wife moved to Ocean City, Md. Mr. Kerr enjoyed crabbing with his wife and family. He was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather.

Mr. Kerr is survived by his wife E.Audrey Kerr of Ocean City,Md. 3 Sons, G. Edward Kerr III of Baltimore, Md., Casey K. Kerr of Abington, Md., Richard “Chuck” Kerr of Maneo,N.C.; 3 Daughters, Judy Kropfelder of Stevensville, Md., Margret “Sissy” Kerr of Severna Park, Md., Sally Kerr of Friday Harbor, Washington.; 1 Brother, Paul G. Kerr of Tuscon, A.Z.; 2 Sisters, Julia Ahern of Ridgewood, N.J., Mary Ann Rowe of St. Mary’s, Md.; 10 Grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brother Joseph C. Kerr and sister Patricia King.

Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday March 22, 2000 at 11:00am at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester, Md. Family and friends may call on Tuesday March 21,2000 from 3-5pm and 7-9pm at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, Md. Prayers will be at 8:30pm on Tuesday March 21,2000. Interment will be at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, Md. following Wednesdays mass.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Christopher’s Catholic Church , P.O Box 660 Chester, Md. 21619 and to St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 208 S. Baltimore Ave. Ocean City, Md. 21842.
