Robert Ruthven Clark, of Bridgewater, VA, formerly of Easton, MD, died at the Bridgewater Home, Bridgewater, VA on Thursday, March 16, 2000. He was 83.
Born in Wilmington, Delaware, June 25, 1916, he was the son of the late George and Phoebe B. Smith Clark. After graduating from high school, he worked for Railway Express until serving in the U. S. Army during World War 11. He was recalled to serve in Korea with the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his release from active duty in 1952, he moved to Easton, MD where he owned and operated Clark Floor Service until its sale in the early 1980's. He moved to Bridgewater, VA in April of 1998.
While living in Easton, he was a member of the Easton Church of The Brethren where he was a past Deacon, the Easton Lions Club from which he received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award and The Gideons International. He was also active with Meals on Wheels and with Easton Little League as an umpire.
Mr. Clark is survived by his wife, the former Esther Marie Steward whom he married in Wilmington, DE on Feb. 14, 1942; two daughters, Carol Lynn Heatwole of Harrisonburg, VA and Esther Ann Stempel of Lawrenceville, VA; a son, The Rev. Robert R. Clark, Jr. of Bridgewater, VA; a sister, Phoebe Callahan of Lewes, DE; a brother, John Clark of Lewes, DE; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 20th, at 2 P.M. at the Easton Church of The Brethren where friends may call one hour prior to service.
Burial will be at the Fairview Church of The Brethren Cemetery, Cordova, MD

J. Thomas Stevens of Church Hill, Md. died on March 16, 2000 at Magnolia Hall Nursing Home in Chestertown, Md. He was 77.
He was born near Barclay, Md. the son of the late James Clayland and Helen Roe Stevens. Mr. Stevens was a graduate of Sudlersville High School and he attended the University of Maryland. On January 13, 1945 he married Frances Benney. Together they lived on the farm near Barclay where Mr. Stevens worked as a farmer, he also worked as a school bus driver later in his farming career. He retired from farming in 1977 and moved to Church Hill, Md. He continued to drive the school bus until 1981. Mr. Stevens and his wife spent winters in Palmetto, Florida. He enjoyed playing shuffleboard, fishing, hunting, and crabbing.
Mr. Stevens was a past member of the Queen Anne’s County Farm Bureau, Church Hill United Methodist Church, Church Hill Lions Club, The Easton Moose Lodge, and the Democratic State Central Committee located in Centreville, Md.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by two daughters: Faye Fraley and son in law Frank of Federalsburg, Md., Peggy Stevens of Chestertown, Md.; a grandson Tom Fraley and his wife Kim of Felton, De.; a granddaughter Leslie Fraley of Federalsburg, Md., and a great granddaughter: Connie Fraley of Felton, De.
A son the late Jimmy Stevens predeceased him in 1964.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday March 19, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday March 18, 2000 between the hours of 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. and on Sunday one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery
in Church Hill, Md. Those serving as pallbearers are: Alton Darling, Bill Walls, Mike Benney, Pete Mansfield, David Benney, and Stanley Warner. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Church Hill Vol. Fire Dept. 316 Main Street Church Hill, Md. 21623.

Ms. Jewel M. Hanifee of Elkton, Maryland, died on March 15, 2000 at Union Hospital of Cecil County as a result of heart failure. She was 48 yrs of age.
Born in Elkton, she was the daughter of the late William Clifton & Evelyn Mae [Hickey] Hanifee. She has been a life long resident of Cecil County and was educated in the Cecil County School system.
The mother of 4 children, she was a homemaker most of her life. She was very family orientated and loved the times she spent with her children and particularly enjoyed being with her grandchildren. In her spare time she loved to raise flowers, cooking and was an avid billiards player. She was a member of several of the leagues in the area.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son James “Jamie” R. Flowers, Jr who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident in 1991.
She is survived by her daughters, Rhonda Shanor and her husband Mark of Elkton, Md, Evelyn M. Breeza and her husband Jeffrey of Cecilton, Maryland, and a son Robert E. Rhoades and his wife Lisa of Elkton, Maryland, a brother, Thomas Vincent of Orlando Florida, 2 sisters Martha Michaels and Cheryl Hanifee both of Hacks Point, Earleville, Maryland, and four grandchildren
Services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 226 East Main Street, Cecilton, Maryland at 1 PM on Saturday, March 18th. A viewing will take place on Saturday from 11 a.m. till service time at 1 p.m. Burial will take place in the Galena Cemetery
following funeral home services.
Charles Edward Squires, Sr., of Easton died at his home on Wednesday, March 15, 2000. He was 50.
Born in Easton on June 26, 1949, he was the son of the late George and Sadie Ferguson Squires. After graduating from Easton High School in 1968 he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1968 until 1970. He had worked as a mechanic prior to his retirement.
He was a member and past Post Commander of the American Legion Post #70, Easton and had coached Easton Little League for a number of years.
Mr. Squires is survived by a son, Charles E. Squires, Jr. and his wife, Melissa of Ridgely; three brothers, Johnny Squires of Linkwood, Sonny Squires and Jimmy Squires, both of Baltimore; a sister, Patsy Atkins of Bridgetown; two grandchildren and a devoted companion, Kathryn E. Blades. He was pre-deceased by a brother, William Squires.
Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Tuesday, March 21, 2000 at 11:00 AM where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be at the Maryland Veteran Cemetery, Hurlock, MD.

Kathryn Cooke Penland of Port Charlotte, Florida, formerly of St. Michaels, Maryland and Fredericksburg, Virginia died on Tuesday, March 14, 2000 at the Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, FL. She was 86.
Born April 18, 1913 in Afton, TN, she was the daughter of the late James Edward and Fannie King Cooke. Following her graduation from Bristol High School, Bristol, TN, she worked for the Social Security Board, the Tennessee Valley Authority Corp of Engineers and the Naval Research Laboratory until her retirement in 1980 after 30 years with the Federal Service.
Her husband, William P. Penland died in 1969.
She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Jr. Auxiliary of the Memorial Hospital as well as the Talbot Women's Club.
Mrs. Penland is survived by a daughter, Joyce P. Carr of Punta Gorda, formerly of Queenstown, Maryland; four grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, March 20, 2000 at 2:00 at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

Jennifer Lynn Willis of Annapolis, MD died Tuesday, March 14, 2000 at the Baltimore Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, MD. She was 27.
Born on January 11, 1973 in Easton, MD, the daughter of David Victor Beecher and Georgia Carol Beecher. She attended Queen Anne’s County High School and later received her nursing certificate from Chesapeake Community College in Wye Mills, MD. Ms. Willis was a member of the Queenstown Volunteer Fire Department.
She is survived by her father, David V. Beecherof Annapolis, MD, her mother, Georgia Carol Beecher of Annapolis, MD, a daughter, Victoria Carol Willis of Centreville, MD., and a sister, Cheryl Beecher of Centreville, MD. She was predeceased by her brother David V. Beecher, Jr. in 1988.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2000 at 1 PM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD. Interment will be in Chesterfield Cemetery
in Centreville, MD.

Charles Allen Ross, Sr., of West Wareham, MA died at the Memorial Hospital at Easton, MD on Monday, March 13, 2000. He was 76.
Born in Easton, Maryland, July 12, 1923, he was the son of the late Emory A., Sr. and Alice Ryan Ross.After graduating from Easton High School, he served in the U. S. Navy during World War 11. Following his release from active duty, he made his home in the Wareham region of Massachusetts where he worked for Com. Electric until retiring in the late 1980's.
A life member of the BPO Elks Lodge #1548, he was also a member of the Little Harbor Country Club in East Wareham, MA..
Mr. Ross is survived by two daughters, Judith R. McDonald of Cambridge, MD and Barbara A. Smith of West Wareham, MA; a son, C. Allen Ross, Jr. of Marion, MA; two sisters, Alice Leonard and Rachel Startt, both of Easton, MD; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Three brothers, Father Emory A. Ross, Jr., Thomas Ross and Robert Ross, are deceased.
Private services will be held in West Wareham, MA.

George Edward “Epps” Abbott of Easton died on Monday, March 13, 2000 at the Corsica Hills Nursing Home in Centreville. He was 86.
Born in Oxford on May 29, 1913, he was the son of the late Howard T. and Pearl Haddaway Abbott. In 1932, he married the former, Catherine Leonard, and they made their home in Oxford where he was a commissioner and Little League Baseball coach for fifteen years, and a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission for twenty years. He was a waterman most of his life until his retirement in the late 1980’s. In 1989, he moved to Easton.
Mr. Abbott was a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Doris Jones of Seaford, DE, and Ann Kelly of Fort Myers, FL; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Douglass Abbott, Sr., is deceased.
Memorial services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Monday, March 20, 2000 at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery
in Oxford.

Samuel Earl Elburn, Sr., of Preston, died at the Genesis Eldercare - The Pines, Easton, on Sunday, March 12, 2000. He was 81.
Born in Baltimore, July 20, 1918, he was the son of the late Russell Cleveland and Alice Benton Elburn. As a child he moved to Rock Hall where he attended public school. He then worked on the water as a commercial waterman until serving in the U. S. Navy during World War 11. Following his release from active duty, he returned to his work as a commercial waterman and then worked as a marine mechanic in several marinas. In 1975, they moved to Easton where he worked in the Bay Hundred area as an estate caretaker and then for Gray Block Ribbon Co. in Easton until retiring in 1988.
A resident of the Preston area since 1997, he was a member of the Easton Church of God and Talbot Post #70, American Legion.
Mr. Elburn is survived by his wife, the former Clara Mae Joiner whom he married in December of 1939 in Fairlee; seven children, Clara Virginia Purnell of Dover, DE, Sylvia Mae Clark and Carolyn Faye Myers, both of Preston, Alice Ann Hart of Harrington, DE, Helen Ruth Gray of Florida, Samuel E. Elburn, Jr. of Easton and David Leroy Elburn of Ridgely; seven brothers and sisters, Walter Leroy Elburn, Alice Mae Taylor, Frances Merle Coleman, Dorothy E. Cannon, Margaret E. Perry, all of Rock Hall, Mildred E. Bland of Smyrna, DE and Peggy E. Morris of NC; 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2000 at 2:00 PM at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, where friends may call one hour prior to service.
Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.
