Myrtle J. W. Schneiderhan

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Myrtle Jackson White Schneiderhan, 104, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997 in City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born Dec. 21, 1892, in McDowell County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lewis Cass and Ellen Keiser Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ivan J. White.

She attended preparatory school at Marion College, but later graduated from Concord College in Athens, W.Va. She entered nursing school at Johnson City (Tenn.) Memorial Hospital, where she received her RN degree. She spent a year at Women's Hospital, New York City, and a year at University of Pennsylvania, where she specialized in anesthesia. She was the anesthetist at Winchester Memorial Hospital, Winchester, Va., for seven years.

She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Martinsburg.

She was a member of Saint Mary's Guild; the West Virginia Horticultural Society; a charter member of Olde Berkeley Garden Club; an accredited flower show judge; an associate member of Potomac Garden Club; a member of William Henshaw Chapter of DAR; a past director of General Adam Stephen Memorial Association; a member of King's Daughter's Circle; and a member of Berkeley County Historical Society.

She is survived by a companion, Helen Hockman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix J. Schneiderhan; and one daughter, Ellen K. White. She was the last of her immediate family.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. The Rev. Jack T. Sutor Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Panhandle Home Health, 1161 Winchester Ave., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401; or to Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 W. King St., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Joseph R. Snyder

SARASOTA, Fla. - Memorial services for Joseph R. Snyder, 68, of Sarasota, Fla., who died Aug. 18, 1997, will be conducted at noon Saturday, Oct. 18, at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Burial was in St. Paul's Cemetery, Western Pike, Clear Spring.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

William E. Barrett Jr.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - William E. Barrett Jr., 70, of Shepherdstown, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 1997, at his home in Shepherdstown.

Born March 20, 1927, in St. Louis, Mo., he was the son of the late William E. and Christine Rollman Barrett Sr.

He was a free-lance architectural photographer, for 35 years, in the Washington, D.C. area, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Colorado and Wyoming. He also did historical survey work for Landmarks Commissions Publications, National Park Service, National Trust for Historic Preservation and for Private Collections.

He worked with boys at National Training School in Washington, D.C.; and he and his wife cared for children who had family problems, under private arrangements.

He lived with his wife in Clifton and Centreville, Va., until 1987; in Denver, Colo.; and Shepherdstown, until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Barrett of Shepherdstown; and family members in Denver.

Services and burial will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Winifred T. Layton

CATONSVILLE, Md. - Winifred Thelma Layton, 82, of Catonsville, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at her home.

Born July 14, 1915, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Wilson Luther and Zula Elizabeth Whisner Spring.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne A. Layton, in 1974.

She attended Great Cacapon Grade and Middle Schools, Great Cacapon, W.Va. She was a 1933 graduate of Paw Paw High School, Paw Paw, W.Va. She earned her bachelor's degree in education from West Virginia Wesleyan, Buckhannon, W.Va., did post-graduate work at Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va.; and earned her master's degree in education from Temple University, Philadelphia.

She was a teacher with Morgan County Public Schools from 1937 to 1957. She then taught with Baltimore County, Md., public schools until her retirement in 1977.

She was a member of Emanuel United Methodist Church, Catonsville and Calvary United Methodist Church, Great Cacapon.

She was a member of Baltimore County Retired Teachers Association, Women's Club of Catonsville, Catonsville Travel Club and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.

She is survived by three sisters, Geraldine Cooke of Gaithersburg, Md., Ada McNabb of Peoria, Ill. and Wanda Mae Pease of Westminster, Md.; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Luther Spring.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va. The Rev. Roger E. Burtner will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Great Cacapon.

The family will receive friends Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alice J. Cook

THREE SPRINGS, Pa. - Alice Jean Cook, 65, of HCR 73, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at her home in Taylor Township, Fulton County, Pa.

Born Nov. 22, 1931, at Everett, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Margaret Weaverling Hoy.

She had been employed by Howard Johnson's and Marriott Corp. on the Pennsylvania Turnpike for 30 years.

She was a member of Center United Methodist Church, Hustontown, Pa.

She is survived by her husband, Charles G. Cook, whom she married on July 30, 1955; one daughter, Rita K. Kling of Hustontown; one son, Robert L. Cook, of Three Springs; five sisters, Mildred Foor, Mabel Greenwalt and Doris Hoover, all of Everett, Helen Felton of Breezewood, Pa., and Vicki Calhoun of Hagerstown; one brother, Jack Hoy of Everett; and four granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, John Hoy, Clifford Hoy and Martin Hoy.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at M. R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown. Pastor George Clippinger and Pastor David Arnold will officiate. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Hustontown.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home; and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Gladys E. Williams

Gladys Eileen Williams, 81, of 1010 Brinker Drive, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 24, 1916, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Harry H. and Ida Mae Shrader Semler Sr.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by three sons, Charles W. Baechtel, Thomas E. Baechtel, and James R. Baechtel, all of Hagerstown; six sisters, Hilda Baker, Betty Butts and Peggy Donegan, all of Hagerstown, Winifred Vickers of Sharpsburg, Evelyne Clouser of Fairplay and Nancy Cronise of Boonsboro; three brothers, Roy Semler of Sharpsburg, Lloyd Semler of Hagerstown and Joseph Semler of Clear Spring; four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Eby; two brothers, Harold Semler, and Harry Semler Jr.; and one grandchild.

Services will be Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. Steven S. McCullough will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Evelyn C. Gruber

WILLIAMSPORT - Evelyn Carvella Gruber, 80, formerly of 23 N. Conococheague St., Williamsport, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at Colton Villa Nursing Center, Hagerstown.

Born Sept. 13, 1917, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Edna Mellott Hull.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Perry Gruber, in 1996.

She was a member of Church of Christ at Hagerstown.

She was a member of Rebecca's of the IOOF, Williamsport.

She is survived by one daughter, Carvella L. "Patty" Stone of Chambersburg, Pa.; two sons, William A. Gruber of Anaheim, Calif., and Howard E. Gruber of Chambersburg; one sister, Rosetta Apa of Queens, N.Y.; two brothers, Herman "Buck" Hull of Laurel, Md., and Marshall Hull of Hagerstown; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Harry Gruber.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Clear Spring Mennonite Church Cemetery, Clear Spring. Minister Bryan Bailey will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the Church of Christ at Hagerstown, 10014 White Hall Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are by Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport.

John E. Ardinger

John Elden Ardinger, 79, of Colton Villa Nursing Home, Hagerstown, and formerly of National Pike, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born April 8, 1918, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late John Edward and Sylvia Irene Bowers Ardinger.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Lee Suder Ardinger, in 1994.

He was employed by Perini Construction Co. until his retirement in 1981.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of AARP.

He is survived by one daughter, Barbara A. Mowen of Clear Spring; two sons, John Emory Ardinger of Clear Spring and Donald Wayne Ardinger of Hagerstown; one sister, Ruth Mills of Williamsport; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Reed and Beulah Green; and one brother, Ralph H. Ardinger.

Private services will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport. The Rev. Robert E. Timmons will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Mount Calvary Church of God, P.O. Box 366, Clear Spring, Md. 21722.

Arrangements are by Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport.

Raymond L. Whorton

Raymond Lee Whorton, 70, of 55 Elizabeth St., died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born April 9, 1927, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William and Lena Nichols Whorton.

He was employed with the City of Hagerstown, and previously with Steffey and Findlay.

He is survived by one daughter, Patricia Ann Whorton of Hagerstown; three sisters, Rose Reeder and Frances Stottlemyer, both of Hagerstown and Pearl Moats of Williamsport; two brothers, Roy Lee Whorton and William Whorton, both of Hagerstown; one grandson; nieces; and nephews.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd. Pastor Lewis Coss will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bessie R. Yost

CLEAR SPRING, Md. - Bessie Rachel Yost, 70, of 20 Mulberry St., died Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997, at Clearview Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 24, 1927, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Florence Irene Snyder Weaver.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Calvin Yost, in 1986.

She was a member of Trinity Christian Assembly of God, Clear Spring.

She is survived by three daughters, Elaine Landman of Clear Spring, Jane Thompson of Hagerstown and Doris "Dottie" J. Dick Robinson of Hedgesville, W.Va.; four sons, Gary C. Yost and David L. Yost, both of Hagerstown, Lee C. Yost of Gambrills, Md., and Steven A. Yost of Williamsport; three sisters, Betty J. Weaver Troupe, and Barbara A. McCarty Knode, both of Williamsport, and Cora L. McCarty Clopper of Woodstock, Md.; one brother, Charles E. Weaver of Hagerstown; 17 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert M. Weaver.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert V. Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Clear Spring.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
