Bernice K. Warren

CASCADE - Bernice Kipe "Be-Be" Ferguson Warren, 77, of 25444 Highfield Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at her home.

Born May 21, 1920, in Harbaugh Valley, Md., she was the daughter of the late Amos E. and Rhoda Kipe Ferguson.

She attended the one-room school in Harbaugh Valley.

She was employed as a stitcher at Kinney Shoe Co., Fairfield, Pa., retiring in 1982.

She was a member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Cascade, where she was a past deacon.

She was a member of Mount Vernon Chapter 398 Order of the Eastern Star, Waynesboro.

She is survived by her husband of more than 60 years, Roy Edward Warren; one daughter, Betsy W. Baker of Carroll Valley, Pa.; one son, Rodger L. Warren of Chambersburg, Pa.; three sisters, Mona Mae Staley and Naomi Harbaugh, both of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., and Lola DeWees of Chambersburg; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ellen DeWees and Helen Cox; and one brother, Carlton Ferguson.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, 25445 Highfield Road, Cascade. Pastor Kelly Crenshaw will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel Church Cemetery, Cascade.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, 25445 Highfield Road, Cascade, Md. 21719.

John F. Kennedy Sr.

FREDERICK, Md. - John Francis Kennedy Sr., 81, of 242 E. Third St., died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Citizens Nursing Home.

Born Oct. 3, 1916, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Frank E. and Anna P. Conrad Kennedy.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Daisy Hutts Kennedy, in 1981.

He retired from Fort Detrick, where he worked in the Decon Station as an operator engineer.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a life member of Independent Hose Co. 1; Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11; Fraternal Order of Eagles Aiere 1067; AMVETS Post 2; and VFW, Emmitsburg, Md.

He is survived by his wife, Julia Funk Kennedy; one daughter, Barbara Watson of Frederick; one son, John F. Kennedy Jr. of Walkersville, Md.; two stepsons, Robert Oland of Frederick and Stephen Oland; one stepdaughter, Susan Strevig of Frederick; three brothers, Joseph Kennedy, William Kennedy and Robert Kennedy, all of Frederick; one sister, Katherine Best of Boonsboro; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in Etchison Memorial Chapel of Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. Theodore E. Haas and the Rev. Wayne G. Funk, pastor of St. Johns Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

The family will receive today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Citizens Nursing Home, 1900 Rosemont Ave., Frederick, Md. 21702; or Independent Hose Co., 310 Baughmans Lane, Frederick, Md. 21702.

Luretta B. Poole

Luretta Blanche Poole, 88, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Reeders Memorial Home, Boonsboro.

Born March 22, 1909, in Wolfsville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Roy G. Powell and Mary Delaney Powell Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Poole, in 1963.

She was employed with White Coffee Pot; and Jim's Always as hostess and cashier, retiring in 1977. She owned and operated View Street Restaurant for 10 years, from 1953 to 1963.

She was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren.

Previously, she was a member of Order of Moose Chapter 342 Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of Eagles 694 Auxiliary; American Legion, Funkstown Dixon-Troxell Post 211 Auxiliary; Senior Citizens of Halfway; and AARP.

She is survived by one daughter, Margaret E. Moore of Chewsville, Md.; one son, Ernest F. Poole Jr. of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one sister, Geraldine Palmer of Hagerstown; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Dolores Lutz, in 1959.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Dean M. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Maynard W. Harshman

FREDERICK, Md. - Maynard William Harshman, 74, of 7110 Rock Creek Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born July 9, 1923, in Wolfsville, Md., he was the son of the late William Ivan and Letha Elizabeth Summers Harshman.

He had worked as a dairy farmer in the Frederick County area.

He was a member of Frederick Church of the Brethren, where he was a deacon, taught Sunday school and was a youth leader in the Mid-Atlantic District for the church.

He was a member of Frederick County Farm Bureau; and Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers Association.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Lewis Harshman; two daughters, Dana L. James of Hagerstown and Christy Beth Brandenburg of Frederick; one son, Vaughn J. Harshman of Frederick; five grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth I. Harshman.

Memorial services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick. The Rev. Paul Mundey, the Rev. Lerry W. Fogle, and the Rev. Henry Hunsberger will officiate. Private burial will be in Grossnickle Brethren Cemetery, Myersville, Md.

There will be no viewing.

Martha A. Showalter

BROADWAY, Va. - Martha Ann Showalter, 53, of Route 1, Broadway, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Born June 18, 1944, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Lehman and Hilda Reynolds Baer.

She was the office manager for Dr. Stauffer's office in New Market, Va. She was a registered X-ray technician and a certified medical technician.

She attended Trissels Mennonite Church near Broadway.

She is survived by her husband, O. Franklin Showalter Jr., whom she married in 1966; one daughter, Elyzabeth Moore of Broadway; one son, O. Franklin Showalter III of Timberville, Va.; and two brothers, Richard Baer of Hagerstown and Lewis Baer of Chambersburg, Pa.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Trissels Mennonite Church. The Rev. Phillip Kanagy and the Rev. Richard Early will officiate. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Grandle Funeral Home, Broadway.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to Critical Care Unit at RMH, c/o RMH Foundation, 235 Cantrell Ave., Harrisonburg, Va. 22801.

E. Catherine Rider

WILLIAMSPORT - E. Catherine "Cas" Rider, 89, of 26 E. Church St., died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 27, 1908, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late George Clinton and Mammie Matilda Renner Rhodes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Roy Rider, in 1959.

She was employed as a manager for Alkahn Label Co., Williamsport, retiring in 1978.

She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport.

She was a member of Potomac Post 202, American Legion Auxiliary, Williamsport.

She is survived by one daughter, Jeanne M. Wasson of Williamsport; two sons, James L. Rider of Asheville, N.C., and Sidney E. Rider of Smyrna, Ga.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. W. Gregory Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, which will be open after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Memorial donations may be made to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 37 W. Potomac St., Williamsport, Md. 21795.

Hazel R. Baker

Hazel R. Baker, 103, of Hagerstown, and formerly of Berlin, Pa., died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village, Hagerstown.

Born Aug. 17, 1894, in Berlin, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Conrad and Ella Nora Johnson Baker.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Berlin.

She is survived by grandnieces and grandnephews; great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; and great-great-grandnieces and great-great-grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Burkett, Elizabeth DeHaven and Anna Baker.

Services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Deaner Funeral Home, 705 Main St., Berlin, Pa. 15530. The Rev. Melvin A. Kirk Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Berlin I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
