Maisie C. Badrich

Maisie C. Badrich, 74, of South Potomac Street, Hagerstown, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born in Tamms, Ill., Jan. 13, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Leroy D. and Maisie E. Isler Creech.

She was a graduate of Tamms Community High School, and attended Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo.

She retired from Ryder P.I.E. in Hagerstown, where she worked as a clerk for 10 years..

She was a member of Young Democrats, United Democrats, and served as manager of Democratic election headquarters during several national elections. In 1989 she was named Democrat of the Year by the Washington County Democratic Central Committee. She also served on the City Planning Commission.

She was a charter member and an organizer of Unitarian Universalist Church of Hagerstown, 41 years ago.

She is survived by her husband, Peter Badrich; one son, Stephen Badrich of San Antonio; and two sisters, Mary L. Dunning and Sara D. Zenge, both of Hagerstown.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Valerie Wills will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Unitarian Universalist Church of Hagerstown, P.O. Box 1268, Hagerstown, Md. 21741.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg.

Laurel L. Wheeler

ABERDEEN, Md. - Laurel Lynn Wheeler, 28, of Aberdeen, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Born in Fort Hood, Texas, she was the daughter of Judith Lee Lowman Wheeler, and the late Joseph Anderson Wheeler Sr.

She was an emergency medical technician, and volunteered at Tome School in North East, Md.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by one daughter, Lacey Jo Wheeler Myers of Aberdeen; one sister, Joan C. Wheeler-Felts of Abingdon, Md.; two brothers, Lowman L. Wheeler of Bel Air, Md., and Joseph A. Wheeler Jr. of Aberdeen; and her fiance, Billy Thompson of Aberdeen.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Roy E. Lowman and Mabel Lowman.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at McComas Funeral Home in Abingdon. The Rev. G. Neale Wirtanen Jr. will officiate.

Friends may call at the funeral home in Abingdon, Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Guy C. Ridgely Jr.

FUNKSTOWN - Guy C. Ridgely Jr., 82, of 14 S. High St., died Friday, April 3, 1998, at his home.

Born Sept. 30, 1915, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of the late Guy Casper Ridgely Sr. and Edna G. Hiltner Ridgely.

He retired from Potomac Edison in January 1980, after 35 years of service.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Air Liaison of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, serving as an usher, and was a member of the Men's Sunday School Class.

He also was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, and Potomac Edison Forerunner Retirees Club. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Geraldine Virginia Kershner Ridgely; one daughter, Karen Ruth Flohr of Hagerstown; one son, Orville Lynn Ridgely of Funkstown; one brother, Elwood G. Ridgely of Hagerstown; one grandson; and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Finfrock; and four brothers, James Ridgely, Myron Ridgely, Donald Ridgely and Charles Ridgely.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 601 Washington Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. David B. Kaplan and the Rev. Thomas L. Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.

Visitation will be at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 601 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Doris L. Kesecker

Doris Lorraine Kesecker, 74, of 1384 Salem Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Aug. 1, 1923, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Herman Lester Titlow and Hazel Elizabeth Clark Titlow.

She was a member of Grace Evangelical Free Church in Chambersburg, Pa.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Jake William Kesecker Sr.; one son, Jake William Kesecker Jr. of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Phyllis E. Germroth Maine; and one brother, Lester Titlow.

Services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Pastor J. William Kesecker and Pastor Galen M. Lingenfelter will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Hester E. Barnhart

MOUNT AIRY, Md. - Hester Emma "Hattie" Hornbaker Barnhart, 93, of Mount Airy, and Woodbine, Md., died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at her daughter's home in Taneytown, Md.

Born March 13, 1905, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Edward Hornbaker and Grace Barnhart Hornbaker.

Her husband, Elwood S. Barnhart, died in 1968.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by seven children, J. Ellsworth Barnhart of Detroit, Mabel Harrison of Baltimore, Isabelle Smith-Payne of Westminster, Md., Violet Homens and Ronald Barnhart, both of Pasadena, Md., Kenneth Barnhart of Woodbine, and Lolita "Chi-Chi" Renehan of Taneytown; two sisters, Golda Barnes of Randallstown, Md., and Pauline Myers of Harrisburg, Pa.; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Sgt. Glen Barnhart.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Burrier-Queen Funeral Directors, P.A., 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield, Md. The Rev. Ralph Neis will officiate. Burial will be in Broadfording Church Cemetery near Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

John R. Virts

ROHRERSVILLE - John Richard Virts, 59, of 20403 Locust Grove Road, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Born Oct. 29, 1938, in Brunswick, Md., he was the son of the late Vannie Veon "John" Virts and Ethel Reberta Stewart Virts Rice. He was the stepson of the late Ernest Rice.

He attended Brunswick High School.

He was employed as an auto body painter and repairman by several auto body shops in Pennsylvania and later refinished furniture and other small items. He also worked at the former Gerdens Modular Homes in Chambersburg, Pa.

He served four years in the U.S. Air Force.

He was of the Episcopal faith, and in his younger life, served as an altar boy at Grace Episcopal Church in Brunswick.

He was a member of Harry D. Zeigler VFW Post 6319 in Greencastle, Pa., Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373 of Greencastle, Waynesboro Moose Lodge and Eagles Club of Waynesboro, Pa., and Metropolitan Owners of North America Antique Automobile Club of America.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, antiques and car races.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Gsell Virts, whom he married in 1971; three aunts; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle. The Rev. Gayle Ruble Sr. will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to John R. Marsh Cancer Center, 11110 Medical Campus Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Jerry M. Smedley

BOONSBORO - Jerry Morgan Smedley, 56, of 17159 Sprecher Road, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 28, 1941, in Mishawaha, Ind., he was the son of the late Vance and Belva Piety Smedley.

He was a 1965 graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., and received his juris doctorate degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

He was employed by Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corp. in Washington, D.C., retiring in 1996. Since his retirement, he was employed by Salem Land Co.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth E. Smedley; one daughter, Jennifer Elizabeth Smedley, at home; three sons, John Morgan Smedley of Seldon, N.Y., Jeremy Vance Smedley of Christianburg, Va., and James Michael Smedley, at home; one sister, Doris Hood of Granger, Ind.; and one brother, Norman Smedley of West Palm Beach, Fla.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Albert L. Leaf Memorial Chapel of Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Richard McGough will officiate.

The family will receive friends after the service until 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jerry M. Smedley Memorial Fund, c/o Indiana University, 300 N. Jordan Ave., Bloomington, Ind., 47405.

Minnie E. Lizor

WILLIAMSPORT - Minnie Estella Lizor, 89, a resident of Williamsport Nursing Home, died there Sunday, April 5, 1998.

Born July 31, 1908, in Beaver Creek, she was the daughter of the late Clayton and Fannie Smith.

Her husband, Joseph Samuel Lizor Sr., died in 1989.

She was a homemaker, and retired from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hagerstown, where she worked in the convent, school and rectory.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of America.

She is survived by four daughters, Dorothy E. Bennett of Williamsport, Patricia M. Staubs of Hagerstown, Elizabeth N. Dayhoff of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Margaret R. Lewis of Hagerstown; two sons, the Rev. Joseph S. Lizor Jr. of Edgemere, Md., and William H. Lizor Sr. of Eldersburg, Md.; a sister, Carrie Cronise of Hagerstown; 25 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet L. Harnish.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 218 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Joseph S. Lizor Jr. as celebrant. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, today from 3 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church Building Fund, 17628 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or to St. Mary's Catholic Church School Fund, 218 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Neal S. Crider

SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Neal S. Crider, 37, of Sheridan, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, after being thrown from his horse on a ranch where he worked in Boulder, Wyo.

Born May 7, 1960, in Sheridan County, Wyo., he was the son of Dr. and Mrs. John Crider of Sheridan.

He was a graduate of Sheridan High School.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Clancy Crider of Pinedale, Wyo.; one sister, Karen Grimes of Jackson, Wyo.; four brothers, his twin, Nelson Crider of Boulder, Michael Crider and Kelly Crider, both of Sheridan, and Kyle Crider of Eugene, Ore.; nieces and nephews; and uncles and aunts of Hagerstown.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John Crider.

A memorial service will be held in Pinedale and at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan at a later date.
