Pearl R. House

Pearl Rodetta House, 93, of 1034 Corbett St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 3, 1905, in Augusta, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late David A. and Daisey Missouri Miller Hott.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David A. House, in 1969.

She was a member of Woodpoint Christian Chapel.

She is survived by five daughters, Dorothy McClung, Erma Snyder and Tempe Faye Swope, all of Hagerstown, Thelma German of Washington, D.C., and Judy Moore of Big Pool, Md.; three sons, Harry C. House and Donald L. House, both of Hagerstown, and Leroy C. House of Boonsboro; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; stepgrandchildren; stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Poffenberger and Ethel Biser; four brothers, Leathy Hott, George Hott, Taylor Hott and Riley Hott; and one granddaughter.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Noel L. Huffman will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Woodpoint Christian Chapel, 317 Woodpoint Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Ruth Diebert

Ruth Diebert, 87, of 12 S. Walnut St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 24, 1911, in Downsville, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Irene C. Shaffer Rowland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Diebert Jr., in 1997.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

She is survived by two sisters, Margaret Rowland and Marie Mentzer, both of Hagerstown.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Harvey Rowland.

Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Edward H. Heim and the Rev. Brian H. Moore will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Jeanette L. Andrews

Jeanette L. Andrews, 88, formerly of 47 Elizabeth St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at Reeder's Memorial Home, Boonsboro.

Born Dec. 31, 1909, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Jack Albert and Emma Kate Everhart Shrader.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn W. Andrews, in 1985.

She was employed by Washington County Hospital.

She was a member of Washington Square United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son, Sandy L. Andrews of Hagerstown; and one grandson, Matthew L. Andrews of Hagerstown.

She was preceded in death by 12 sisters and brothers.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Hal Atkins will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Florence V. Hager

Florence V. "Bonnie" Hager, 94, of Mealey Parkway, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 5, 1903, in Smithsburg, she was the daughter of the late Lancelot and Alice Brenner Jacques Sr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Garvin Hager Jr., in 1962. He was editor of The Daily Mail at the time of his death.

She attended Carl's Private School in Hagerstown and finished her education at Martha Washington Seminary, Washington, D.C.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown and was active in the Women's Guild.

She is survived by a son, Jacques G. Hager; a brother, Pearre DuBrutz Jacques; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Lancelot Jacques Jr., Arthur Jacques and Lucien Jacques.

Graveside services will be at the convenience of the family in Smithsburg Cemetery. The Rev. Victor Zuck will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Rescue Service, P.O. Box 22, Hagerstown, Md. 21741.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Virginia M. Hammond

WOODSBORO, Md. - Virginia Marie Penwell Hammond, 77, of Woodsboro, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at Glade Valley Nursing Home, Walkersville.

Born Feb. 19, 1921, in Thurmont, Md., she was the daughter of the late George Thomas and Bertha Virginia Staub Penwell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, S. "Jim" Hammond, in 1964.

She was employed at Woodsboro Sewing Factory. She also operated the restaurant at Woodsboro Livestock Sales and worked at Ducky's & Elsie's Restaurant, Woodsboro. She was a child-care provider in the Woodsboro area.

She was a member of Woodsboro Evangelical Lutheran Church.

She was a charter member of Woodsboro Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Woodsboro American Legion Post 182 Ladies Auxiliary. She was a recipient of the Cletta Abrecht Award in 1997.

She is survived by four children, Ruth B. Martins of Woodsboro, Edwin L. Boller of Damascus, David R. Boller of Woodsboro and Michael A. Hammond of Frederick; a sister, Edith M. Myers of Frederick; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a great-grandchild; a sister, Frances Penwell; and a brother, Roger Penwell.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville, Md. The Rev. Maurice Arsenault of Woodsboro Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nellie S. Kerfoot

FREDERICK, Md. - Nellie Starliper Kerfoot, 71, a resident of North Hampton Nursing Home, and formerly of Baltimore, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at the nursing home.

Born March 23, 1927, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Wilson and Lethean Knode Starliper.

She retired from Western Maryland Railroad and CSX Railroad.

She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Clear Spring and attended St. James Lutheran Church of Randallstown, Md.

She was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra L. Kendrick of Baltimore; a sister, Leila S. Vance of Clear Spring; a granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles S. Starliper, Henry F. Starliper, Mason Starliper and Frank Starliper.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Andy Carr and Pastor Robert Day will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Clear Spring.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 322-324 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Austin L. Kline Jr.

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Austin L. Kline Jr., 59, of Hollow Road, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 13, 1938, in Wolfsville, Md., he was the son of the late Austin L. and Mary E. Winfield Kline Sr.

He was recently employed with Myersville Exxon.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Myersville, Md.

He is survived by two sisters, Pauline Grossnickle of Myersville and Annabelle Moser of Middletown; one brother, Thomas Kline of Wolfsville; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Glenn C. Kline.

Graveside services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Grossnickle Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Myersville. The Rev. Randall Reid will officiate.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by Ricketts Funeral Home, Myersville.

Phyllis A. Stottlemyer

Phyllis Ann Stottlemyer, 58, a resident of Western Maryland Hospital, Hagerstown, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 13, 1939, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George Edgar and Anna Lee Fields Swisher.

She is survived by two daughters, Jeri Lynn Haines and Robin Ann Gillenwater, both of Hagerstown; two sons, Richard Wayne Stottlemyer of Greencastle, Pa. and Mervin Robert Stottlemyer of Martinsburg, W.Va.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Harry N. Byrd

VALRICO, Fla. - Harry N. Byrd, 72, of Valrico; and formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, April 3, 1998, in Valrico.

He was born March 8, 1926, in Hagerstown.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty L. Bramble Byrd.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

He was employed with the U.S. Merchant Marines.

He is survived by two sisters, Maxine V. Guessford of Hagerstown and Vivian I. Hill of Hurlock, Md.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Byrd; three sisters, Jane Murphy, Pearl Knode and Doris Vulgmott; and one brother, William F. Byrd.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Hubbard Funeral Home, 4107 Wilkens Ave., Baltimore. The Rev. James Elliott will officiate. Burial will be in Loudon Park Cemetery.
