Coward, Sr., Victor

Victor Coward, Jr., 70, of Cambridge died Thursday evening, March 15, 2001 at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born in North Carolina on March 3, 1931, the son the late Victor and Connie Coward Coward, Sr. (Names Are Correct). Mr. Coward attended school in North Carolina, graduating from Scotland Neck High School in 1949. He worked as an insurance agent and moved to Maryland in 1965. On March 11, 1967, he married the former Karin Covington. Mr. Coward worked as a car salesman for Hallowell Chevrolet in Easton, operated a general store in Chester and was also a petroleum inspector for E. W. Saybolt Co. After moving to Cambridge in 1976, he worked for Johnson Motors as a car salesman and later, operated Vic’s Corner Kitchen in Secretary. Mr. Coward was a member of the Board of Trustees for Old Starr Church in Starr, Maryland. He enjoyed fishing and bowled on a league for 10 years. He also owned a home at Hyde Park in Easton. Surviving are his wife, Karin J. Coward of Cambridge; a son, Victor Coward III and his fiancée Yvonne Borresen of Jessup, Maryland; 4 daughters, Linda Coward Davis and her husband Kenny of Hobgood, North Carolina, Ann Coward Sherrill and her husband Gene of Walstonburg, North Carolina, Sandra Coward Johnson and her husband Wayne of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Paula Coward Larrimore and her husband Chris of Easton; 9 grandchildren, Ellen Davis, Annie Boyd, Natalie Sherrill, Jonathan Sherrill, Steve Pescatore, Timothy Johnson, Todd Johnson, Hollie Larrimore and Cameron Larrimore; 2 sisters, Mavis Baker of Greenville, North Carolina and Christine Simmons of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding in death is a daughter, Gloria Coward Harris. There will be a memorial service at Old Starr Church in Starr, Maryland on March 24, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Covington officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Old Starr Church Restoration Fund, c/o Jane Potter, 2317 Four-H Park Road, Centreville, MD 21617; Coastal Hospice, P. O. Alderman, Ruth A.

Ruth A. Alderman, 84, of Rising Sun, MD died Thursday, March 15, 2001 at Union Hospital in Elkton, MD. Mrs. Alderman, a homemaker, was born on December 8, 1916 in Oxford, PA. She was a member of the American Legion Post 194 Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by a son, Ronald Riley and a sister, Peggy Blesch, both of Rising Sun; 3 grandchildren, Robin Riley of Silver Spring, MD, Randy Riley of Rising Sun, and Michele Brown of Conowingo, MD; and 3 great grandchildren, Lindsey Riley, Samantha Riley and Trever Brown. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Street Eugene Riley, who passed away in 1955 and Mack L. Alderman, who passed away in 1993. Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday March 19, 2001 at R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun where friends may call Sunday evening from 7 - 9 p.m. Burial will be in West Nottingham cemetery, Colora, MD.

Cianelli, Lois Marie Adams

Lois Marie Adams Cianelli Age 64, of Chesapeake City, MD, died Monday, April 2, 2001 at her residence in Chesapeake City, MD. Mrs. Cianelli was a PBX Operator in the Health Care Industry and a member of St. Catherine's Church in Orange Park, FL. She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Dallas M. Adams and her Half-brother, Jay Vaughn. Mrs. Cianelli is survived by her son and his wife, Steven G. and Donna Cianelli of Chesapeake City, MD, her daughters, Karen L. Cianelli of Orlando, FL and Trina G. Drysdale of Jacksonville, FL, her granddaughter, Danielle Dallas Drysdale, also of Jacksonville, 2 grandsons, Michael Grant Cianelli and Steven Thomas Cianelli, both of Chesapeake City, her brother, Ronald Adams of York, PA and 2 cousins, Quentin and Eva Turman. Services will be held 2pm, Thursday, April 5, 2001 at the R.T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 318 George St., Chesapeake City, MD where family and friends may visit from 7-9pm, Wednesday, April 4, 2001. Burial will be in the Gilpin Manor Memorial Park following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association in c/o R.T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 318 George St., Chesapeake City, MD.

Sheriff Hugh Michael

MR. HUGH MICHAEL SHERIFF

Mr. Hugh Michael Sheriff, 40, of Brunswick, died on Monday, April 2, at his home. He was born on December 31, 1960 in Washington, DC . Surviving are his father Roger H. Sheriff and his wife Betty of Winchester,VA, his mother Marletta Philley and her husband Henry of Granbury, Texas, 3 children, Melissa A. Sheriff, Shawn M. Sheriff, Roger Hugh Sheriff all of Weatherford, Texas, 3 sisters, Sondra M Sheriff, Marlene L. Sheriff both of Brunswick, Tina D. Kapp of Winchester, VA, a brother Sam J. Stephens of Laurel, MD. Michael will be remembered as a loving son, father and brother. The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Wednesday, April 4, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the * Lindsey Funeral Home, 473 s. Main St., Harrisonburg, Va on Thursday, April 5, at 2:00 P.M. Interment in Dayton cemetery, Dayton, VA.

Akins, Norman

Norman (Ike) Akins, age 88, of Darlington, Maryland passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, April 4, 2001. Born on December 12, 1912, he was the youngest of 8 children of the late Graham and Maggie Akins. He was educated at Hosanna School, Berkley, Maryland, (historical landmark). In early years he worked in Darlington, Maryland on a local farm. He came to live with his sister the late Pearline Dorsey at an early age and remained in the family home where loving care was provided by his niece Edna Branch. Ike, as he was known by family and friends was a man of simplicity, he enjoyed setting outside on the porch or under a shade tree, watching old westerns which he referred to as “my cowboys”, laughing with family members and his Sir Riley tobacco pipe. Ike never married or had children. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Wharton Akins, Pearline Dorsey, George Akins, Gertrude Christy, Serena Webster, Leon Akins, and Taff Akins. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Edna M. Akins (wife of the late George Akins) of Stewartstown, PA; and four generations of the Akins, Dorsey, and Webster Families.

Hunt, Camden E.

Mr. Camden E. Hunt, 75, of Mt. Airy died on Saturday, April 7, at his residence

Born on May 4, 1925 in Romance, West Virginia he was the son of the late Romie O. and Pretha P. Weatherholt Hunt. Mr. Hunt had been an auto mechanic his entire life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War earning a Purple Heart. Mr. Hunt was an outdoors man, enjoying hunting, fishing, gardening and taking walks.

Surviving are a daughter, Mitzi Montemore and husband Tom of Mt. Airy; two grandchildren, Josh Montemore and Amanda Montemore also of Mt. Airy; a brother; Carroll Hunt of Ohio, three sisters; Virgie Bowman and Lois Bowman both of Ohio and Ruth Elvington of Texas as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by his special friend, Dave Snuffer of Mt. Airy. Mt. Hunt was preceded in death by a son, Edgar L. Hunt and a daughter, Wilda Christine Hunt.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Wednesday, April 11, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 14, at the Parson's Funeral Home, Ridgley, WV. Interment will be in Stonelick cemetery, Kenna, WV.

Dacre, Dr. Jack Craven

Dr. Jack Craven Dacre, 81, of Frederick died on Saturday, April 7, at College View Nursing Center, Frederick. He was the husband of Jean R. Olney Dacre, his wife of 50 years.

Born on January 1, 1920, in Auckland, New Zealand, he was the son of the late George Craven and Grace Piper Dacre. Mr. Dacre was a toxicologist working at Ft. Dertick for more than 20 years. He earned a B.S.C. amd M.S.C. at Auckland University in New Zealand and his Ph.D., D.S.C. at London University in England. Mt. Dacre enjoyed gardening and was a stamp collector.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons; Kenneth J. Dacre, Terrence M. Dacre and wife Donna, and Paul C. Dacre all of Frederick; and a grandson Michael C. Dacre also of Frederick. Mr. Dacre was preceded in death by a son Simon Dacre.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 10, in the Stauffer Funeral Home Chapel, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Inurnment will be private.

Jaggers, Iona Phillips

Iona Phillips Jaggers, 83, of Elk Mills, MD died Sunday, April 8, 2001 at home. Mrs. Jaggers was born and raised in Taccony/Philadelphia, PA. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR); Daughters of War of 1812 and Daughters of the Union. She is survived by 3 sons, Ronald Jaggers of Rising Sun, MD; Donald Jaggers of Elk Mills and Robert Jaggers of Lancaster, PA and 4 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, George Newton Royds Jaggers, who passed away in 1988. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thurs. April 12, 2001 at Lawn Croft cemetery in Linwood, PA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Coral Ridge Ministries c/o R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 111 S. Kimmerling, Jessie May

Jessie May Kimmerling, 95, of Calvert died Monday, April 9, 2001 in Elkton, MD. She was born in Washington, D.C. on March 28, 1906. She lived in Arlington, VA prior to moving to Cecil County in 1985 to live near her granddaughter, Karen Hansrote and family. Mrs. Kimmerling was a piano instructor and an award winning gardener. She is survived by 2 daughters, Elizabeth Russell of Fairfax City, VA and Jessie L. Kimmerling of Berryville, VA; 1 son, William Kimmerling of Colonial Beach, VA; 1 sister, Alice Trees of Greenbelt, MD; 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Albert Kimmerling, who passed away in 1986. Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thurs. April 12, 2001 at R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun where friends may call 1 hour prior. Burial will be in West Nottingham cemetery, Colora, MD.

Lehker, Kathleen J

Mrs. Kathleen June Lehker, 60, of Walkersville, died Monday, April 9 at her home after a long battle with cancer. She was the wife of the late John Norman Lehker, who died Sept. 28, 1989. They were married on August 11, 1962 in South Bend, Indiana. Born June 1, 1940 in Hartford City, Indiana, she was the daughter of Robert Francis and Dorothy Madeline Landon Knecht of North Liberty, Indiana. A 1962 graduate of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, with a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Mrs. Lehker worked at Shady Grove Hospital for over 20 years. Mrs. Lehker had lived with her family in Walkersville since 1979 where she had been a giving member of the community and an active member of St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church. She was a volunteer in her church and community for many years and was a conservationist, environmentalist, and strong advocate for human rights. Family and friends were most important in her live. She loved to travel, was an avid reader, a talented artist and a whiz at crosswords. Her enthusiasm for life and indomitable spirit was an inspiration for all those who knew her. She was loved and respected and will be missed by all. In addition to her parents, she is survived by three children, Michael John Lehker of Washington, DC , Thomas Andrew Lehker of Frederick, and Kathryn (Katrina) Elizabeth of Walkersville; three sisters, and two brothers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 15 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave., Walkersville, MD., with a Prayer Service to begin at 8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 16 at St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville with the Rev. Father Richard J. Murphy as the celebrant. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Hospice of Frederick County, 516 Trail Avenue, Frederick, MD 21701; St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church, 200 Glade Blvd., Walkersville, Md. 21793; or to the American Cancer Society, 1393 Progress Way, Suite 908, Eldersburg, Md 21784.

Barry, Gary Allen

Gary Allen Barry, 54, of Colora, MD, died Sunday April 10, 2001 at home. Mr. Barry was a Warrant Officer W-3 in the US Army serving in Korea, Germany and Vietnam. He also served in the 101st Division. He worked as a civil service employee as an Instructor in Aberdeen Proving Ground before retiring in 1998. He was a member of American Legion Mason Dixon Post 194 in Rising Sun and the Disabled Veterans. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy I. Barry of Colora; his parents, Allen & Ruth Barry, of Elizabethtown, PA; son, Dean Barry; sister, Gladys Bergman of Bath, PA; nephew, Edward Bergman of Bath, PA; and niece, Kim Bergman, of Bath, PA. Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday April 13, 2001 at R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun, where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Memorial Park in Allentown, PA.

Hessler, Bernard Phillip

Mr. Bernard Phillip Hessler, 81, of Walkersville died on Thursday, April 12, at the Washington Adventist Hospital, Takoma Park. He was the husband of Catherine Lydia Zimmerman Hessler, his wife of 53 years.

Born on March 5, 1920, in Washington, DC he was the son of the late Bernard Phillip, Sr. and Catharine Ardeeser Hessler. Mr. Hessler was an ink production officer with the Bureau of Printing and Engraving in Washington, DC, retiring in 1979 with 37 years service. He received his core education an the University of Maryland with additional courses taken at Princeton, George Washington University and Oklahoma A&M. Mr. Hessler served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theater. He was a member of St.Timothy's Catholic Church in Walkersville and the Greenbelt Lion's Club where he was the Tail Twister for many years. Mr. Hessler was a stamp collector, grew a vegetable garden, loved to work crossword puzzels, was an avid bingo player and enjoyed all music especially big band music.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two children; Timothy J. Hessler and wife Rachel of Walkersville and Deborah H. Austin also of Walkersville; six granddaughters; Katharine Hessler, Frances Hessler, Victoria Hessler, Mary Hessler, Jennafer Harrison and Rebecca Austin; a grandson, Michael Harrison; two brothers; Laurence Hessler and Francis Hessler; a sister, Catharine Howe. Mr. Hessler was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call from 12-9 PM on Monday, April 16, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Avenue, Walkersville where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM with a Christian Wake Service taking place at 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, April 17, at 11:00 AM at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville with Rev. Richard J. Murphy as Celebrant. Interment will be in Glade cemetery, Walkersville.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Walkersville Volunteer Rescue Co., P.O. Box 202, Walkersville, MD 21793 or to the American Heart Association, 839 Quince Orchard Blvd., Suite E, Gaithersburg, MD 20878.

Franks, Sr., Jerry Wade
Army

Mr. Jerry Wade Franks, Sr., 73, of Mt. Airy died on Wednesday, June 6, at his residence. He was the husband of Bonnie Sue Steele Franks, his wife of 44 years.

Born on November 23, 1927, in Hearld, Virginia he was the son of the late John Lloyd and Martha Melissa Stanford Franks. Mr. Franks owned and operated Jerry's Trophy shop in Mt. Airy for 30 years. He and his wife ran the business out of their home for five years prior to opening the store in 1971. Mr. Franks was a member of the National Beagle Hunters Association, the National Nite Hunters Association and the National Quarter Horse Association. He also served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Franks was very instrumental in getting Buffalo Road paved. He work diligently for three years organizing petitions writing letters, etc., until the project was approved.

Surviving in addition to his wife are four children; Jerry Wade Franks, Jr. and wife Joan of Mt. Airy, Deborah Mae Franks-Earls of Mt. Airy, Linda Sue Richmond also of Mt. Airy and John Wayne Franks and wife Billie Jo of Finksburg; fourteen grandchildren; one brother Wiley C. Franks of Castlewood, VA and a sister, Pauline Kilgore of Baston, VA. Mr. Franks was preceded in death by a sister, Bertha Rose and two brothers, Worley Franks and Bennie Franks.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Sunday, June 10, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy where funeral services will be held on Monday, June 11, beginning at 1:00 PM Interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery, Mt. Airy.

Hayden, Joseph E.

Joseph E. “Joey” Hayden, 24 of Lakesville, passed away early Saturday morning, March 17, 2001, near Taylors Island, Md.

He was born in Cambridge on June 13, 1976, the son of Anthony Kim and Cathy Mills Hayden. He was a lifelong resident of Lakesville and a 1994 graduate of Cambridge-South Dorchester High School. Following graduation he attended the Nashville Auto Diesel College for one year and for the past five years has been employed at Waste Management of Cambridge as a mechanic.

He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his parents, who reside at Lakesville, one brother and sister in law Anthony K. Hayden Jr. and Kelly of Salisbury, his paternal grandparents Mr. & Mrs. James D. Hayden of Toddville, and maternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Jim Mills of Lakesville. Also surviving are several aunts and uncles.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Monday afternoon at 1 o’clock by Pastor Chris Pennington. Burial will take place in Dorchester Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday during the hour before the service. Memorials may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Lisa Morris, 2115 Liners Rd., Church Creek MD 21622.

Pall bearers will be Barry Phillips, Art Phillips, Mark Phillips, Stevie Shockley, Wes Foxwell, and Reagan Rothwell.

Johnstone, Mary H.

Mary H. Johnstone, 87, wife of the late William T. Johnstone, passed away on Friday night, March 16, 2001 at Dorchester General Hospital.

She was born in Salt Coats, Scotland on November 29, 1913, the daughter of the late Arthur Jackson and Annie Nicol Hughey. She came to the U.S. in 1923 and was raised in Niagra Falls, N.Y. On March 4, 1942 she was married to Mr. Johnstone and in 1955 the Johnstones moved to Cambridge, Ohio. Upon Mr. Johnstone’s retirement in 1963 the family moved to Cambridge, Maryland. Mr. Johnstone passed away March 18, 1969. Mrs. Johnstone was employed by Dorchester General Hospital from 1964 to 1977. During this time she worked at the switchboard and in the business office.

For many years she was active in Christ Episcopal Church where she taught in the Sunday School and the Johnstone family was quite involved in the music department. She was a member of the Skipjack Players and while living in Ohio she was active in the Community Players. Recently she had been a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Hurlock and was a part of the weekly bible study group.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Lou Johnstone of West Bloomfield, Michigan and Gayle Campbell of Trappe, two sons, William T. Johnstone, Jr. of Hurlock and Arthur J.H. Johnstone of Salisbury, nine grandchildren, Maya Gangadharan, Tara Gangadharan, Patrick Johnstone, Jill Johnstone, Jake Johnstone, Michael Johnstone, Andrew Johnstone, Jessie Campbell and Daniel Campbell, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son John C. Johnstone, a sister Millie Hughey, and a brother James Hughey.

A memorial service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock by Rev. Custer Ruley. Interment will take place in East New Market cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dorchester County Unit of the American Cancer Society, c/o Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Rd., Cambridge MD 21613 or the Building Fund of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, P.O.Box 152, Hurlock MD 21643.

Klimasewski, Larry Michael

Larry Michael Klimasewski, 49, of Elkton, formerly of Chesapeake City, MD, died Thursday, March 29, 2001 at his home. Services will be private.
