Burton, William H.

William H. Burton, 82, of Cambridge, passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center on Friday afternoon, June 8, 2001.

He was born in Baltimore on September 25, 1918, the son of the late William Ellsworth and Minnie Willey Burton. Mr. Burton was raised and attended public schools in Cambridge and on March 28, 1937 was married to the former Marie Ruark. The Burton’s resided in Baltimore from he early 1940’s until 1984 when he retired and they moved back to Cambridge. Mr. Burton was a machinist by trade and was employed by the Maryland Ship-building and Drydock Co. and the E.J. Codd Co. until retirement. Mrs. Burton passed away on March 20, 2000. Mr. Burton had been at Chesapeake Woods for only three days.

He is survived by one daughter Lois B. Henning of Baltimore, one son William H. Burton, III of Ft. Wayne, IN, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock by Pastor William J. Henning, Jr. Burial will take place in Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge, Md. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday during the hour before the service.

Willey, Audrey L.

Audrey L. Willey, 79, of Cambridge, passed away at her home early Wednesday morning, June 6, 2001. She was the wife of the late S. Insley Willey.

She was born at Wingate Md. on July 9, 1921, the daughter of the late James Matthew and Floy Windsor Lewis. She was raised and attended public schools in Dorchester County and on September 11, 1937 was married to Mr. Willey and moved to Cambridge. For one year she was employed at the Eastern Shore State Hospital. For 55 years Mrs. Willey was affiliated with the F.W. Woolworth Co. in Cambridge and was widely known locally for her long association with the store. She retired as manager in 1993. Mr. Willey passed away on August 13, 1994.

She is survived by one sister Edna L. Wheatley of Wingate, two brothers Norris O. Lewis and Osylee J. Lewis, both of Wingate, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister Adele L. Sarvey and five brothers, David L. Lewis, Weller R. Lewis, Earl J. Lewis, Leon E. Lewis and James A. Lewis.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Saturday morning at 11 o’clock by Rev. Dale L. Vroman. Burial will take place in Dorchester Memorial Park. There will be no viewing. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 209 East Market St., Salisbury MD 21801-4948.

Pall bearers will be John Sayville, Marc Todd, Paul Whitelock, Daniel Lewis, and Mike Coughlin.

Asplen, J. Hamilton

J. Hamilton Asplen, 91, of Cambridge, passed away early Monday morning, June 11, 2001, at the Glasgow Nursing Home.

He was born at Woolford Md. on August 31, 1909, the son of the late William Purnell and Sallie Jane Linthicum Asplen. He was raised at Woolford and attended public schools in Dorchester County. As a young man he was employed by the late Brice Twilley delivering milk, but for most of his life he was involved in farming. The Asplen’s made their home at Lloyds where from 1948 until retirement in 1994 Mr. Asplen operated the farm at “Spocott”. On August 2, 1928 he was married to the former Florence “Betty” Smith, who passed away on January 26, 1997. Since January of 1997 Mr. Asplen has resided at the Glasgow Nursing Home.

He was a member of Cambridge Elks Lodge 1272, Cambridge Moose Lodge 1211, and Dor. Post 91, American Legion. Some years ago he was a member of the local National Guard unit in Cambridge and for many years he was active in the Knights of Pythias.

He is survived by two daughters, Grace Ayers of Salisbury, and Muriel Davies of Hanover, PA, one son Stephen H. Asplen of Chesapeake City, eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one sister Laura Clemmer of Rock-land MA, and one brother S. Herbert Asplen of Church Creek. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter Deborah Dykes, two grandchildren, Daniel Dykes and Kathleen Hayes, one sister Charlotte Asplen, and three brothers, William P. Asplen, F. Grafton Asplen, and Harold L. Asplen.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock by Rev. Gloria S. Attix, pastor of Beckwith United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Old Trinity Churchyard. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday during the hour before the service.

Dimitriades, Ingeborg D.

Ingeborg D. Dimitriades, 76, of Rising Sun, MD, died Wednesday June 13, 2001 at home

Mrs. Dimitriades was born on July 6, 1924 in Bremerhaven, Germany. She was the daughter of the late Stanley & Anni Watts.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Chris Dimitriades of Rising Sun; a daughter, Inge Diana Konther of Rising Sun; and a granddaughter, Inge Dereing.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday June 16, 2001 at Moravian cemetery in Staten Island, NY.

Carlisle, Delcie M.

Hartly -- Delcie M. Carlisle of Hartly died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in her home. She was 96.

Mrs. Carlisle was born Aug. 17, 1904 in Hartly, daughter of the late Susan Foraker and Henry Bain.

Mrs. Carlisle was a homemaker, helping on the family farm.

She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Carlisle was a member of Grace Apostolic Church of Kennedyville, MD.

She is survived by a son, Donald Carlisle of Hartly; a daughter, Helen M. Shahan of Frederica; 12 grandchildren, Richard Shahan of Salisbury, Md., Sandra Shahan of Greenwood, Irene Collison of Frederica, Barbara Nelbone of Woodside, Robert Shahan of Harrington, Linda Shahan of Woodside, Beverly Glanden of Frederica, George Shahan of Frederica, Carol Tiedemann of Frederica, Tammy Edge of Frederica, Donald Carlisle Jr. of Hartly and David C. Carlisle of Hartly; 34 great grandchildren, numerous great, great grandchildren and great, great, great grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows cemetery, Camden.

Sheffield, Rogie M. "Bubba"

Rogie M. ”Bubba” Sheffield, 73, of Prince George, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. He was the son of the late Rogie Samuel and Elsie Louise Lee Sheffield. Mr. Sheffield was preceded in death by his wife Virginia Sheffield and a sister Lois Wright. He was a retired elevator operator for Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corporation.

He is survived by a son, Rogie M. Sheffield; two sisters, Annie Wade of Dinwiddie and Mildred Thompson of Petersburg as well as numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.

Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, March 24, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. in Blandford cemetery, Petersburg with the Reverend Ernest Priddy officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights.

Dotson, Nina D.

Nina D. Dotson, 89, of Myersville, MD, died Tuesday June 19, 2001 at Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport, MD.

Mrs. Dotson, the daughter of the late Charles & Dolly Ridinger. was born on Jan. 14, 1912 in Floyd County, Virginia.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Patricia Wyatt of Myersville, MD and Janet Shedlow of Germantown, MD; 2 grandchildren, Paula and Daniel; and 3 great grandchildren, Justin, Luke & Jeremy.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Theodore Shedow and her second husband, Lloyd Dotson; a brother, Edmond Ridinger; and 4 sisters, Virgie Cox, Mattye Riley, Evelyn Aldridge and Lottie Haga.

Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday June 23, 2001 at R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun, MD where friends may call 1 hour prior. Burial will be in Brookview cemetery.

Truitt, Leona Paul

Leona Paul Truitt, of Cambridge, passed away at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge on Wednesday June 13, 2001. She was 98. Mrs. Truitt was born near Cambridge on November 30, 1902 and was the daughter of the late McKenny and Ida Hoge Paul.

Mrs. Truitt had attended schools in Cambridge, having graduated from Cambridge High School in 1921. She was a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge, where she had sung in the choir for over 50 years, and had participated in numerous activities of the women of the church. She was a member of the Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary and had been very active in the operation of the Robin Hood Shop for over 50 years. On October 5, 1942 she was married to John Whilson Truitt. He passed away on August 18, 1975. She had worked as a dental hygienist for Dr. P.P. Payne for 15 years. And later had worked at Frankel’s and Carton’s in Cambridge. She was a past president of the Business Women’s Professional Club as well as the Cambridge Women’s Club. Mrs. Truitt and her husband had been active in the local political arena for a number of years. She had been in failing health since last September, and had been a resident at the Mallard Bay Care Center since September where she passed away on Wednesday morning.

She is survived by a niece, Nancy Paul Taitt of Charleston, Illinois, two great nieces, Katharine Ireland of Camp Hill, PA and Jennifer Ross of Perth Australia, one great nephew, Joseph Taitt of Oakland, CA. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a brother, William McKenny Paul.

A Funeral service will be held on Saturday morning at 11:00 AM at Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Nathaniel W. Pierce officiating. Interment will follow in Christ Episcopal Churchyard. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 456, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the Robin Hood Shop, 416 High Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Stone, Winnie R.

Winnie R. Stone, 80, of Petersburg, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at her residence. A native of Nottoway County, she was the daughter of the late Algie Edward and Bertha Halterman Robertson. She was a retired civil service employee at Fort Lee. Survivors include two daughters, Bonita L. Auders of Colonial Heights, and Barbara E. Stevenson of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, James Charles Lick of Richmond; grandson, Christopher Hayden of Severn, Md.; granddaughter, Angel Lick of Petersburg; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Minnie R. Bailey of Petersburg, Jean Williamson of Blackstone, Va., Lucy Waterhouse of Wilson, Va., and Eleanor Ewing of Mammouth Junction, N.J.; four brothers, George F. Robertson of Petersburg, John C. Robertson of Jacksonville, Fla., Howard H. Robertson of Richmond, and Robert H. Robertson of Crewe, Va.; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in the chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights.

The Reverend Dr. Carroll A. Londoner will officiate. Interment will follow in Bermuda Memorial Park, Chester. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m., Monday, June 18, 2001, at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome, or contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, 6221 Newbys Bridge Rd., Chesterfield, Va.

Carroll, Sr., Aaron W.

Aaron W. Carroll, Sr. of Bethlehem Road, Bethlehem, MD, died Monday, June 11, 2001 at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. He was 76.

He was born Dec. 24, 1924 in Bethlehem, the son of the late Clinton T. and Mary Sellers Carroll.

He was a graduate of Preston High School and was a U. S. Army veteran of WW II. He served as Postmaster at Bethlehem, owned and operated Carroll's Grocery Store in Bethlehem and Carroll's Floor Sanding. He was an avid fisherman and was a commercial fisherman. He was a member of the Commercial Waterman's Association. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #1520 in Easton. His most recent pastime was meeting at McDonald's at Walmart in Easton.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lillian Blessing Carroll, whom he married March 4, 1950, two daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Wayne Carels of Bethlehem, and Vicky and Timmy Jester of Preston, MD, two sons Aaron W.Carroll, Jr, "Bubby" and friend Lynn of Preston, and Darrin and Lisa Carroll of Bethlehem; 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Willie G. Carroll of Meridenville, AL and Carson M. Carroll of Seaford, DE, and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Virginia Lee Christopher, preceded him in death in 1998 and a brother, Milton T. Carroll, in 1979.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, PA in Federalsburg with Rev. Glenn Staehli officiating. Interment will follow in Junior Order cemetery in Preston, MD. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7:00 -9:00 p.m.

Tarr, Carol Rose

Hebron: Carol Rose Tarr, 39, of Hebron died on Monday January 1, 2001 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born in Salisbury on April 20, 1961 she was the daughter of Helen Dunn of Salisbury and the late Richard Dean Truitt.

Carol attended James M. Bennett High School. She was currently employed at Pittsville Diner. She also had been a waitress for many years at English’s restaurant. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband and longtime companion, Merrill T. Tarr of Hebron, two daughters, Ceiara R. Tarr and Victoria R. Tarr, both at home, two brothers, Richard “R.D.” Truitt of Delmar, and Larry Truitt of Salisbury, three sisters, Rebecca Harrell of Willards, Cindy Shores of Salisbury, and Patti Pruitt of Westover, maternal grandparents, Ferman and Maggie Ruark of Salisbury, several other family members and many friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday at 2:00 P.M. at the Bounds Funeral Home on E. Main St. in Salisbury where friends and family may call one hour prior to the service. Pastor William B. Cropper will officiate. Interment will follow in New Hope cemetery in Willards. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ceiara R. Tarr and Victoria R. Tarr Trust Fund, C/O Farmers Bank of Willards, 1150 Parsons RD, Salisbury, MD 21801, Attn: Charlene Lewis.
