Slacum, Herbert S.

Herbert S. Slacum, of Cambridge, passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge on Monday November 19, 2001. He was 88. He was born in Cambridge on June 26, 1913 and was the son of the late Preston and Jenny Pierson Slacum.

Mr. Slacum had graduated from Cambridge High School. On February 9, 1938 he was married to the former Mary E. Medford. She passed away on April 5, 1979. Mr. Slacum had worked as a purchasing agent and also as an accountant for the Phillips Packing Co. and Coastal Foods and later for Hanover Foods in Cambridge. He had retired some years ago. He had been in failing health for the past three weeks, and had been a patient at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge for two weeks when he passed away early Monday morning.

He is survived by two sons, William E. Slacum of Cambridge and Robert P. Slacum of Baltimore, four grandchildren, Samuel P. Slacum, Rachel E. Slacum, Matthew Slacum and Nathan Slacum; two great grandchildren, Micah Slacum and Samuel P. Slacum, Jr. and one sister, Lily Butler of Cambridge. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by four brothers, Ward Slacum, Harold Slacum, Bill Slacum and Reginald Slacum.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday morning at 11:00 AM at the East New Market cemetery with the Rev. Dale L. Brown officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:30 to 9:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Pallbearers will be: Samuel P. Slacum, Nathan Slacum, Bob Krewson, James M. Creighton, Kelly Lawhead and Bruce Myers. Honorary Bearer will be Spunk Creighton.

Higgins, Sr., Charles C.

Mr. Charles C. Higgins, Sr., 67, of Frederick died on Monday, October 29, at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC. He was the husband of Sue Higgins his wife of 23 years.

Born on September 6, 1934 in Derwood, Maryland he was the son of Goldie T. Johnson Higgins of Frederick and the late Charles C. Higgins. Mr. Higgins was a HVAC technician and had worked for A.B. Chelini in Montgomery County for 12 years. He was a member of the Frederick Amateur Radio Club.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are 5 children; Charlyn Higgins, Charles C. Higgins, III and friend Kim Lytle of Florida, Deborah A. Cramer and husband Randy of Frederick, Lynn E. Higgins and wife Kate of Michigan, Laura L. Fernandez and husband Enrique of Frederick; a step-son, Larry Burriss and wife Margie of Frederick; 8 grandchildren; Stephen Lytle, Kimi Lytle, Michael Higgins, Bryan Higgins, Alanna Higgins, Darren Higgins, Brittany Cramer and Brianna Cramer; 4 brothers and sisters; Mary E. Hall and husband William of Columbia, Joseph R. Higgins and wife Pat of Pennsylvania, Esther Proffitt and husband Claude of Poolesville and Jessie Higgins of Gaithersburg; and his ex-wife, Mary E. Higgins.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 PM on Thursday, November 1 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick where services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, November 2. Interment will be in the Higgins Family cemetery, Harpers Ferry, WV.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Frederick Amateur Radio Club, 2149 Wainwright Court, Box 1-C, Frederick, MD 21701.

Rothman, Florence G.

Florence G. Rothman, 84 of New Church, Virginia, formally of Philadelphia, PA, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mollye Silvers Greenberg.

She is survived by her husband, Elmer Rothman; a daughter, Janet Aquilind of New Church; two grandchildren, Michael Toff and Tracy Hollan Toff and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are pending.

Hirko, Dana

Dana Hirko, 46, of Pocomoke City, MD, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, MD.

Born September 5, 1956 in Hampstead, NY, she was a daughter of Dorothea Joyce Royal Clark of Pocomoke City and Edward J. Falkowski.

Ms. Hirko moved to Pocomoke City three years ago from Smithtown, NY to be close to her mother.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by three children, Andrew Hirko of Smithtown, NY; Karen Hirko of Huntington, NY and Daniel Hirko of Smithtown, NY; a half-sister, Janine Falkowski of Commack, NY; four step-sisters, Debbie Lindo and Robin Lindo both of Florida; Pam Kozlowski of Quechee, Vermont; Valarie Clark of New Hampshire; two step-brothers, Jeff Lindo of Setauket, NY and Kevin Clark of Woodstock, Vermont.

Funeral services will be held, Sunday, December 29, 2002 at the Branch Funeral Home in Long Island. tele: (631)724-9500

Brunke Sr., William "Bill" Charles

William “Bill” Charles Brunke Sr., 61 of Salisbury, died Saturday, January 18, 2003 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of the late Herbert R. and Ruth Blanch Brunke.

Mr. Brunke worked in cable TV construction for many years prior to becoming a painting contractor. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by his family.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Dolores E. Brunke of Salisbury; five children and their spouses: Lisa and Chuck Smith of Salisbury, Robert Brunke of Salisbury, Timothy and Peggy Brunke of Parsonsburg, Tammy Thames of Tampa, FL, and William Brunke Jr. (unknown); two grandchildren: Shania Brunke and Timothy Brunke Jr.; a sister, Gwen Walston and husband, Snookie of Princess Anne; two brothers, George Keene and wife Bobby of Princess Anne and Leroy Brunke and wife, Sandi of Newton Falls, OH; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at 2 PM at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dean L. Perdue will officiate.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to Deers Head Center, PO Box 2018, Salisbury, MD 21801.

Arrangements are being handled by Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill Rd., Salisbury, MD 21804.

Irvin, Jessie T.

Jessie Tine Irvin was born on March 4, 1924 in Sparta, Kentucky to Alice Scruggs and George T. Irvin. He departed this life on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at the University Of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, Maryland.

Jessie grew up and attended public school in Gallatin County and New Liberty, Kentucky. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at a very early age and was baptized at the Parkridge Baptist Church, Sparta, Kentucky. He was a member until he joined the Army in 1941. He later joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Havre de Grace, MD and remained a member until his death.

While stationed in Maryland, he met Mazine Faison and they were united in marriage on December 15, 1952. “Old Soldier” as he was lovely called by family and friends retired from the US Army as a Sergeant on September 30, 1961 from Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, NY. Upon his retirement he settled in Aberdeen, MD and held several positions at Aberdeen Proving Ground. He was an active member of the Hamilton Court Improvement Association, Charleston – Miller VFW #6054 and Cooties. For several years he served as a volunteer Auxiliary Policeman on the Aberdeen Police Force.

Jessie was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Mazine, his brother, Marshall Irvin and sister, Mary Louise Jasper.

He leaves to mourn 2 sons, Theodore Faison of Plainfield, NJ and George Irvin, Sr. of Richmond Hill, NY; 2 daughter-in-laws, Elaine Faison of Plainfield, NJ and Joyce Irvin of Richmond Hill, NY; 2 grandchildren, George Irvin, Jr. and Jessica Irvin (his namesake) from Richmond Hill, NY; 1 step-sister, Mildred Redmon of Cincinnati, OH; 1 uncle, Randolph Branch of Aberdeen, MD; 3 sister-in-laws, Hattie Bell Stancell and Maeloise Sumlar of Margarettsville, NC and Vivian Blount of Sea Board, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Service will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday January 22, 2003 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 520 Lewis Street, Havre de Grace, MD where friends may call one hour prior. Friends may also call Tuesday January 21, 2003 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lisa Scott Funeral Home 552 Lewis Street, Havre de Grace, MD. Burial will be in Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

Johnson, Pauline E.

Pauline E. Johnson, daughter of the late Calvin and Anna Miller Johnson was born October 11, 1923 in rural Harford County, Maryland. She departed this life suddenly on Monday, February 3.2003. She was married to the late Charles Govans.

Pauline attended Fairview School. She worked for many years as a domestic. She would eventually move to Philadelphia, PA, where she made her home for many years, returning to Maryland in 1986 to make her home with her sister, Florence R.Smothers. She immediately became a member of Clarks United Methodist Church. There she became a member of the Usher Board, and participated in the activities of Clarks' United Methodist Women. Pauline loved her church and church family and attended on a regular basis. She also spent a lot of time at the Highland Senior Citizen Center doing various activities to keep herself occupied, Pauline loved people and people loved her. She was thoughtful, kind, and considerate, and took much pleasure in the simple things of life.

Several persons were particularly special to Pauline; Linda Jenkins of Philadelphia, PA was more like a daughter than a godchild, and Mary Stewart of Darlington, MD- her "road buddy"- the two were practically inseparable. Her sister, Florence R. Smothers made her home Pauline's home, and Florence's friend, Charles Holland did many things around the house to make it comfortable for Pauline. The other siblings are most grateful to Florence for all she did to make her later years comfortable.

She was preceded in death by a sister Marine Johnson, and two brothers, Charles V. and John A. Johnson.

Pauline is survived by four brothers, Oscar Miller, of Dover, PA, Jerry Johnson,Stewartstown, PA, Richard Johnson of Whiteford, PA, and EImo Johnson of Fawn Grove, PA; six sisters, Margaret Divers of Baltimore, MD, Leona Turner of Forest Hill, MD, Mary C. Smith of Belcamp, MD, Florence Smothers of Darlington, MD, Dorothy Johnson of Street, MD, Shirley Johnson of Fallston, MD: three sisters-in-law, Marie Hawkins-Johnson of Delta, PA, Marie Murray-Johnson of Whiteford, MD, and Bessie Miller of Dover, PA; and three godchildren, Carnell Johnson of Edgewood, MD, Carolyn Edwards of Aberdeen,MD, and Linda Jenkins of Philadelphia. PA.

Service will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11, 2003 at Clarks United Methodist Church, 2001 Kalmia Road, Bel Air, MD where friends may call one hour. Burial will be in Clarks United Methodist cemetery, Bel Air, MD.

Williams, Winnie Woodruff

Winnie Woodruff Williams, 73, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2003 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, MD.

He was born December 9, 1929 in Winston-Salem, NC and was the only son of Charlie and Mary Woodruff Williams, both deceased.

He is survived by one daughter Cynthia Williams of Fruitland, MD, one son Lee Williams of Ocean City, MD, his former wife Betty Williams of Salisbury, MD his loving grandson Ross Williams of Ocean City, MD and one sister Jean Skiados of Northern Virginia.

Winnie enlisted in the United States Navy in 1948 upon graduating from High School and received an Honorable Discharge in 1950.

After holding several positions in the automobile industry, Winnie founded Midway Chevrolet of Pocomoke City in 1963. Due to his business skills and his engaging personality, the dealership grew rapidly. In 1974 he constructed a new facility for Midway, which enabled it to become one of the most successful and modern GM dealerships in the East at that time. His awards and recognitions in the automobile business were numerous. After selling Midway Chevrolet, Winnie stayed active in various business ventures, including Real Estate Development.

Winnie was a life member of the Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company. He served as a firefighter for 35 years and was president in 1974. Winnie was also a very active member of the Pocomoke City Elks Lodge. He held several officers' titles including Exhalted Ruler in 1969/1970 and 1987/1988. He was named Elk of the Year in 1973/1974 and again in 1980/1981. In 1981 Winnie was recognized by the Maryland State Senate for his tireless efforts assisting with the construction of the new Elks facility on Rt. 113 in Pocomoke City.

In addition to his keen business skills, Winnie had the unique ability to turn strangers into friends immediately. It is nearly impossible to find a town or city on the Eastern Shore where Winnie is not recognized as a fine businessman and friend. Winnie's home was always open to persons of all walks of life and his conversations were meaningful and enlightening. Winnie Woodruff Williams will be greatly missed by his family and many, many friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Pocomoke City Elks Lodge on Thursday, March 6th at 1pm. Friends may call on the family at Holloway Melson Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 5th from 7pm to 9pm. An additional service will be held Sunday, March 9, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Huff Funeral Home in East Bend, NC. Interment will follow in the Boonville Baptist cemetery in Boonville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pocomoke City Elks Lodge, P.O. Box 174, Pocomoke City, MD 21851 or the Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 116, Pocomoke City, MD 21851.

Lemuel Newbay Chester, Sr.

Lemuel Newbay Chester, 74, of Cambridge departed this life on December 20, 2002 at his home.

He was born in Port Norris, New Jersey on September 29, 1928, son of the late Leon and Blanche Chester.

Mr. Chester received his education at Frederick Douglas St. Clair High School in Cambridge and graduated in 1946. He later joined the U. S. Navy and served in World War II and in Korea.

His employment was with National Can Corp for 30 years and upon retirement he worked for Cambridge Park Apartments for 17 years.

In 1952, he married Virginia A. Harris.

He is survived by three children: Rev. Lemuel Chester, Jr. (Lavone), Larry Chester (Deborah) and Ricky Chester, all of Cambridge; a daughter, Mary Harris (Philadelphia, PA); an uncle: William Giles (Cambridge); two sisters in-law and two brothers in-law (all of Baltimore); ten grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Services will be held on Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, 12 noon, at Bethel AME Church. Rev. Lemuel Chester, Jr. will officiate. The interment will follow at the Eastern Shore Veterans cemetery.

There will be a viewing 1pm – 8pm on Thursday, December 26, 2002 at Henry Funeral Home, PA.

Radcliffe, Andrew McKim

Andrew McKim (Andy) Radcliffe, age 27, formerly of Cambridge, MD and presently of Cincinnati, Ohio, died suddenly Friday, November 29, 2002 at the home of his brother and sister-in-law in Lafayette, Indiana.

Born on February 26, 1975 in Cambridge, MD, he was the son of George M. Radcliffe, Jr. and Jacquelyn McCann Radcliffe of Cambridge, MD.

Andy was a graduate of Cambridge South Dorchester High School, Class of 1993, where he was the class valedictorian. He received his bachelors of arts degree from Princeton University, Class of 1997 and completed his masters degree in 2000 from the University of Miami, Oxford, Ohio.

Andy was a writer and an English composition teacher at the University of Miami, Oxford, Ohio. He had just completed his first novel entitled “Where There Is Water”.

Andy’s hobbies were writing, reading, tennis and was an all around sports enthusiast especially liking the New York Yankees.

Surviving besides his parents are two brothers Scott Radcliffe and his wife Meghan of Lafayette, Indianna, Greg Radcliffe and his wife Melissa of Cambridge, MD, paternal grandparents George M. Radcliffe, Sr. and Augusta (Gussie) Radcliffe of Cambridge, MD, maternal grandmother Mary McCann of Virginia Beach, VA, aunts and uncles Nancy and Michael Marcus of Danbury, CT, Buz and Jane Follmer of Cambridge, MD, several cousins and friends.

Preceding him in death was his maternal grandfather John McCann and aunts and uncles William B. Radcliffe, Augusta R. Follmer and Mary McKim Radcliffe.

Andy’s cremated remains will be inurned privately on the family property at Windemere Farm, Cambridge, MD.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary, Refuge of Sinners Catholic Church, Glasgow St. and Hambrooks Blvd, Cambridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to the Andy Radcliffe Memorial Fund, c/o Bank of the Eastern Shore, P.O. Box 757, Cambridge, MD 21613.
