Marlin K. Hoff, 66, of New Windsor

Marlin Kroh Hoff, 66, of New Windsor, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004 at his home after an extended illness.

Born June 7, 1938, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late S. David and Miriam Kroh Hoff. He was the husband of Kathleen Roach Hoff, his wife of 41 years.

Marlin was the owner of Coldsprings Farms, New Windsor, and a nationally prominent breeder of Holstein dairy cattle since 1963. He was a graduate of Westminster High School, class of 1956 and the University of Maryland in 1967, with a bachelor of science degree in dairy science. Sparking his lifelong career was winning the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest in 1959. In 1972, he was selected as one of four National Outstanding Young Farmers by the Jaycees. Over the years, he has bred many outstanding cows and bulls. He was honored by the Carroll County Holstein Club with its Outstanding Senior Breeder Award. The Maryland Holstein Association awarded him its Junior Breeder, Senior Breeder and Distinguished Service Award. He was an honoree by the Maryland Dairy Shrine. Most recently, he was the recipient of the 2000 Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder Award by the National Dairy Shrine. He was a past president of the Carroll County Holstein Club and the Maryland Holstein Association and chairman of the 1981 National Convention in Baltimore. He served on the Holstein U.S.A. board of directors, was a charter director of the Holstein Foundation, past director of Sire Power Inc., longtime director of the Maryland State Fair, director of the Maryland-Virginia Milk Producers Association Inc. and served on the Carroll County Property Tax Assessment Appeal Board.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Westminster, and the church choir for many years. He was a tenor soloist since high school, singing at numerous functions and weddings, including his own. He sang for many years with Herb Sell's Carroll County Choral Society. In college, he sang the lead in the production of "Guys & Dolls" and again later with the New Windsor Players.

He greatly enjoyed golf and was a member of Holly Hills Country Club, Ijamsville. Marlin will be remembered by his family and friends as one of keen mind, boundless energy, outspokenness and his generous support of youth programs. His life philosophy is best summed up in his favorite song, "The Impossible Dream."

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons Ian A. Hoff and Matthew M. Hoff and daughter-in-law Debra L., all of New Windsor; grandchildren Courtney, Brook and Alicia Hoff; brother Samuel C. Hoff and wife Georgia S. of Gamber; sister Shirley A. Hoff of Westminster; sister-in-law Arlene B. Hoff of Uniontown; an aunt and uncle; and nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by son Patrick Adam Hoff in 1978 and brother Malcolm D. "Bud" Hoff in 1993.

A private funeral service and interment will be at the convenience of the family.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13 at Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St., Westminster, with the Rev. David Helfrich, his pastor, officiating.

There will be no public visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Patrick Hoff Memorial Scholarship Fund, Maryland Holstein Association, c/o Donna Reese, 1705 Uniontown Road, Westminster, MD 21158, or Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St., Westminster, MD 21157 or Carroll Hospice, 95 Carroll St., Westminster, MD 21157.

Nicola A. Lombardi, 94, of Reisterstown

Nicola A. Lombardi, 94, of Reisterstown, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at the Northwest Hospital Center, Randallstown, from natural causes.

He was the son of the late Fiore and Josephine Lombardi. He was the husband of the late Elvira Lombardi.

He owned and operated the Lombardi Brothers Market for the better part of 40 years in the Pimlico section of Baltimore.

Surviving are sons Frank J. and Nicholas C. Lombardi, both of Reisterstown; brother Michael Lombardi of Reisterstown; sister Rose Ford of Jarrettsville; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by brother Albert Lombardi, who died on Sunday. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills. Interment will be in Lakeview Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Frank A. Messina, 54, of Westminster

Frank A. Messina, 54, of Westminster, died Sunday evening, Nov. 28, 2004, at Carroll Hospital Center.

Born March 24, 1950, in Lucinda, Pa., he was the son of the late Bernard A. and Frances L. Ginnery Messina. He was the husband of Gail Richard Messina, his wife of 29 years.

He was a veteran of the Marine Corps., having served six tours in Vietnam. He was self-employed as an auto mechanic and welder.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter Angela Messina of Meadville, Pa.; stepchildren Michael Roemer of Phoenix, Ariz., Darla Stamm of Omaha, Neb. and Darrellyn Roemer of Shenandoah, Va.; brothers Donald Messina of Clarion, Pa., Frances Messina of Butler, Pa., and Samuel W. Messina III of Titusville, Pa.; sister Donna Davidson of Hanover, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brother Bernard A. Messina Jr. in 1998.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

There will be no public visitation.

Arrangements are by Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster.

Robert C. Roy Sr., 80, of Finksburg

Robert C. Roy Sr., 80, of Finksburg, died Sunday evening, Nov. 28, 2004, at his home.

Born July 28, 1924, in North Woodbury, N.J., he was the son of the late Oscar P. and Alice M. Shinn Roy. He was the husband of Stephanie H. Mazak Roy, who died in 1985.

He was a veteran of the Army, having served as a combat engineer during World War II. He was an electrician for 25 years and retired from Honeywell Inc., where he was employed for more than 25 years as a computer engineer.

He was a member of the American Legion Carroll Post 31 and had formerly been a volunteer fire chief and in the Civil Defense in Vandergrift, Pa.

Surviving are children and spouses Linda L. Roy of Baltimore, Robert C. Jr. and Dee Roy of Baltimore, Cynthia and David Cowan of Charlotte, N.C., and Tom Roy of Finksburg; sister Dorothy Budd of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; grandchildren Jacqui Gajewski of Herndon, Va., Heather Roy and Robert C. Roy III of Baltimore and Philip and Katherine Cowan of Charlotte, N.C.; great-grandchildren Jacob and Nicholas Roy of Baltimore; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by sister Edith Copeland and brother Oscar P. Roy.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, with the Rev. Robert Bell officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Cornell R. Stuart, 52, of Front Royal, Va.

Cornell R. Stuart, 52, of Front Royal, Va., formerly of Neptune, N.J., died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at home.

Born Nov. 18, 1952, he was the son of Pearl Dorsey.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are former wife Wanda Groomes; daughters Nadeen Stuart and Moneeke Stuart; grandchildren Azurdae Harris and Damontae Summers; sisters Frieda Carey and Ranier Perry; brothers Herb Dorsey and Johnny Dorsey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday at James H. Hunt Funeral Home, 126 Ridge Ave., Asbury Park, N.J.

Valoise H. Taylor, 82, of Mount Airy

Valoise Herrington Taylor, of Mount Airy, formerly of Hanover Township, N.J., died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004.

Born July 30, 1922, in Binghamton, N.Y., she was the wife of Ezekiel Sidney Taylor III, whom she married July 2, 1949.

She had lived and worked in Miami, Fla., for a number of years.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are daughter and son-in-law Susan Taylor and David L. Wakefield; sons and daughters-in-law Christopher Ezekiel and Sharon Marie Taylor and Matthew Sidney and Noel-Marie Taylor; and grandchildren Maura Rhiannon Taylor, Aidan Randall Taylor, Breanna Rhys Taylor, Stephanie Marie Taylor and Michael Anthony Taylor.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hildale Park Presbyterian Church, Ridgedale Ave., Cedar Knolls, N.J.

Jean Austin, 66, of Westminster

Jean Pendlebury Austin, 66, of Westminster, formerly of Berlin and Bricktown, N.J., died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004.

She was the wife of George H. Austin Jr.

She worked for Random House at several locations, with her last location being in Westminster.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are daughter Lora J. Swensen of Bricktown; son Keith H. Austin of Westminster; sister Ann Hawley of Australia; and grandchildren Kyle M. Swensen and Troy Swensen.

A funeral service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ora L. Wooster Funeral Home, 51 Park Blvd., Clementon, N.J. Cremation will be private, following the service.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.

M. Helene Bicking, 84, of Catonsville

M. Helene Bicking, 84, of Catonsville, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004.

Born Oct. 6, 1920, in Baltimore, she was the wife of the late John W. Bicking.

Before retiring, she was a bookkeeper for McCormick and later at Catonsville Community College.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law Daniel W. Bicking and Mary Bohon of Eldersburg; sister Janet Groth of Atlanta, Ga.; and grandchildren Ryan, John and Kelsey Bicking.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park Inc., 7250 Washington Blvd., Elkridge. Interment will be in Meadowridge Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Gladys E. Bolte, 84, of Finksburg

Gladys Edna Bolte, 84, of Finksburg, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at her home.

Born Oct. 24, 1920, in New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Loretta Pickney Taylor. She was the wife of the late Charles Henry Bolte.

She was a housewife.

Surviving are son John Henry Bolte of Pikesville; daughter Laura Jean Bolte Kelley of Finksburg; sister Helen J. Bolte of Saylorsburg, Pa.; grandchildren Amy Troyer, Jennifer Kruelle and Joseph Kelley; and great-grandchild Jacob M. Kruelle.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown, with the Rev. Ray Chase officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 1840 York Road, Timonium, MD 21093.

Edward G. Caldicott, 90, formerly of Westminster

Edward G. Caldicott, 90, formerly of Westminster, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, in West Babylon, N.Y., after a short illness.

Born Dec. 9, 1914, he was the husband of Florence Caldicott.

While living in Westminster, he was an active member of St. John Church and also sang in the choir. He was a volunteer at Carroll County Food Sunday, Habitat for Humanity and local blood drives.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters Mary Buschman of Amityville, N.Y., Frances Wilson of Annandale, Va. and Dr. Catherine Caldicott of Cazenovia, N.Y.; and grandchildren Steve, Brian, Graham and Emily.

A funeral service and burial were held Monday, Dec. 20, 2004.

Arrangements were by Powell Funeral Home, Inc., 67 Broadway, Amityville, N.Y.

Francesca B. Johnson, 35, formerly of Westminster

Francesca Borrelli Johnson, 35, of Cockeysville, formerly of Westminster, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at the University Hospital Shock Trauma Unit, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Born Aug. 8, 1969, in Towson, she was the daughter of Dr. Niel J. and JoAnne Kissinger Borrelli of Westminster. She was the wife of Robert Johnson, who she married on Nov. 18, 1998.

She was a 1987 graduate of Westminster High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Towson University in geology. She was in the master's program in environmental sciences at Towson University.

She was employed as an environmental scientist at EBI Consulting in York, Pa. She was certified in multiple areas of inspection. She was an active member of the Geological Society of America. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially hiking, kayaking and skiing. She had a keen interest in a clean environment, with a special interest in the Chesapeake Bay.

Surviving, in addition to her parents and husband, are sister and brother-in-law Nicole D. and Loren Estes of Eldersburg; aunts and uncles Frank and Jean Borrelli of Belmont, Vt., and Sandra and Dr. Renzo Ricci of Finksburg; cousins Heather, Barbara, Allison, Daniela, Frank, Matteo and Susanne; father-in-law Robert Johnson; grandmother-in-law Helen Phillips; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Steve, Gail, Eric and David Johnson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster, with Monsignor Arthur F. Valenzanno as the celebrant. Interment will be in Meadow Branch cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Inc., 6 Herndon Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403.
